Abstract:Various solid state phase transformations exist in metastable β-type Ti alloys, which can be employed to optimize the mechanical properties. In this paper, synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) experiments were carried out to study the phase transformations of a Ti36Nb5Zr alloy subjected to different thermomechanical treatments. Furthermore, the correlation between the phase constitutions and the mechanical properties was discussed. The α″ texture formed, and high-density defects were introduced after cold rolling of the solution treated specimen, leading to the decrease in Young's modulus and the increase in strength. The cold-rolled specimens were then annealed at temperatures from 423 to 773 K for 30 min. Both the Young's modulus and strength increased with annealing temperatures increasing up to 673 K, which resulted from the precipitation of the ω and/or α phases. With further increase in annealing temperatures to 773 K, the β → α precipitation replaced the β → ωiso phase transformation, and the density of defects decreased, leading to the decrease in both the Young's modulus and strength. These results provide theoretical basis for the design biomedical Ti alloys with both low Young's modulus and high strength.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily investigates the phase transformation of Ti36Nb5Zr alloy under different thermomechanical treatments and its impact on mechanical properties. Specifically: 1. **Research Background and Objectives**: Ti-based alloys are widely recognized in the field of biomedical implant materials due to their low Young's modulus, high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, light weight, and good biocompatibility. Particularly, β-type Ti alloys have become a research focus because their Young's modulus is close to that of human bone (approximately 50-80 GPa), effectively reducing the stress shielding effect. However, the Young's modulus of human bone is about 10-30 GPa, still lower than the modulus values of current β-type Ti alloys. Additionally, to withstand the complex stresses inside the human body, implant materials need to possess high strength. 2. **Research Content**: This paper studies the solid-state phase transformation behavior of Ti36Nb5Zr alloy under different thermomechanical treatments using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) technology and explores the relationship between phase composition and mechanical properties. 3. **Main Findings**: - After cold rolling treatment, a (200) a00-oriented texture is formed, introducing high-density defects, which leads to a decrease in Young's modulus and an increase in strength. - When annealed in the temperature range of 423-673 K, both Young's modulus and strength increase with the annealing temperature due to the precipitation of high modulus α and/or ω phases. - When the annealing temperature is further increased to 773 K, the β→α precipitation replaces the β→ω transformation, reducing the defect density, resulting in a decrease in both Young's modulus and strength. 4. **Conclusion**: The research results provide a theoretical basis for designing biomedical Ti alloys with both low Young's modulus and high strength. In summary, this paper aims to explore how to optimize the mechanical properties, particularly Young's modulus and strength, of Ti36Nb5Zr alloy by studying its phase transformation process under specific thermomechanical treatment conditions to meet the needs of biomedical applications.
