Abstract:Transition metal-based materials are an excellent alternative high cost Pt and Pt-group metals as the anode material in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). However, similar to Pt-based anode, these catalysts can also be poisoned by the by-product intermediates produced by methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In this study, CoNi bi-component nanosheets were anchored onto the wall of spaced TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2 @CoNi) using a hydrothermal modification strategy and acted as a nonprecious metal electrocatalyst for MOR. Importantly, benefitting from the construction of the p-n heterojunction, the photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be effective separated. The holes are utilized for the decomposition of intermediate species adsorbed on the catalyst surface, thus releasing the occupied active sites. The as-formed TiO2 @CoNi hybrid displays remarkably improved intermediate-poisoning resistance ability and elevated electrocatalytic stability for MOR with the assistance of solar-light irradiation. This study provides an innovative strategy to design catalysts with tolerance for poisoning intermediates in MOR application, thus slowing down the drop of catalyst activity.
