Abstract:The overall objective of this IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Special Issue on high-frequency-link power-conversion systems is, therefore, to bring out the highlights of the ongoing world-wide activities in this area of advanced research to expose, analyze, and resolve the critical research and developmental challenges. The Special Issue received a total of 132 manuscripts for review considerations of which 35 manuscripts have been accepted for final publication. These publications encompass all four broad categories of high-frequency-link power-conversion systems (i.e., dc/ac, ac/dc, ac/ac, and dc/dc converters) with broad applicability in the following areas of application: photovoltaic energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, fuel-cell energy, energy storage, uninterruptible power systems, motor drives, high-frequency-ac power distribution systems, high-voltage direct- current transmission, active load emulator, smart/micro grid, solid-state transformers, induction heating, railway traction drive, pulsed power, plug-in hybrid-electric-vehicle, battery charging, inductive power transfer. Abstract:Voltage and current measurements in high-voltage substations are fundamental for stable operation. Conventional instrument transformers (ITs) face challenges in gas-insulated switchgears (GISs), such as size, weight, accuracy limitations, and behavioral instability at abnormal voltages and currents. Non-conventional instrument transformers (NCITs) have emerged to address these issues, complying with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards and providing millivolt-level signals, enabling downsizing of GIS bays. The transition to digital substations, as mandated by IEC 61850-9-2, requires a shift from the conventional 110 V/5 A outputs to levels ranging from millivolts to volts. Electronic instrument transformers (EITs), compliant with the IEC 60044-7 and 8 standards, offer alternatives to conventional ITs with smaller sizes and wider frequency ranges. However, issues remain with EITs, including limited adoption, the necessity of separate power sources, and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. Recent standards, transitioning to IEC 61869, focus on low-power instrument transformers (LPITs). Low-power voltage transformers (LPVTs) and low-power current transformers (LPCTs), designed with passive components, present potential solutions by directly connecting to merging units (MUs) for digital signal transmission. This review outlines the current status of various IT standards, covering conventional ITs, EITs based on IEC 60044-7 and 8, and LPITs based on IEC 61869-10 and 11. Advancements in sensor technology relevant to these standards are also explored. The paper provides insights into the evolving landscape of instrument transformers, addressing challenges and offering potential pathways for future developments in digital substations.

Development of Multi-Domain Design Tool for Medium Voltage High Frequency Power Transformers

Abstract:Medium voltage high frequency (MVHF)transformers with high power density are required by emerging medium voltage DC systems such as PV generation, data centers, etc. However, design tools for MVHF transformers are with limited functions and low accuracy, which makes the optimal design hard to achieve in all electrical, magnetic and thermal domains. This paper proposed a new multi-domain design tool for MVHF transformers. It includes three main parts: I/O interface, dataset of materials and structures, and performance estimator. This tool provides a clear and convenient interface and can complete the complicate optimization process automatically. Compared with existing design methods, this design tool is more comprehensive in both optimization methodologies and transformer parameters which can be optimized. The tool also realized the combination with circuit simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink. In addition, an improved method to calculate transformer temperature rise based on thermal network method is used. The feasibility and accuracy of this design tool are verified through an optimization process of a power transformer in a typical DAB converter.
Large-Power Transformers: Time Now for Addressing Their Monitoring and Failure Investigation Techniques

Abstract:Several review studies exist in the literature about monitoring, fault detection, and diagnosis of power transformers. However, they are general approaches in terms of power transformers. Some only focus on applying a specific class of techniques, but again, for general power transformers. Other reviews focus on applying different technologies such as fiber optics, thermal cameras, and vibration sensors, but all within the perspective of general power transformers. A significant question remains: among all types of power transformers, which specific techniques should be used, and why are they more adequate? What are the uncertainties that can decrease their precision? What about the balance, in terms of costs, associated with applying a certain technique and the return needed for a particular type of transformer? In this context, this paper is not only a literature review of well-known problems related to power transformers. Here, we do not just center on large power transformers (100 MVA or higher). Still, we describe a case study of a phase-shifting 1400 MVA-400 kV three-phase transformer that currently connects two European countries that began to show signs of abnormal operating conditions in 2012. In this way, the need to detect and identify anomalies in their initial stage of development for a possible preventive maintenance action is more than justified, which is essentially achieved with continuous monitoring models of the transformer, as concluded in this paper.

Abstract:Within a power electronics transformer (PET), the medium frequency transformer (MFT) is one of the key components for the whole system providing the required isolation and the voltage conversion between primary and secondary sides. A comprehensive design procedure is presented aiming to achieve high-voltage-insulation and high-efficiency. Referring to insulation standard, transformer insulation parameters are determined. To achieve the high efficiency, the number of turns is discussed considering both the calculated core loss and the estimated winding loss. A 30kVA transformer prototype is constructed and extensive measurements are performed including insulation tests, transformer loss and parasitic capacitance. The transformer prototype passes the IEEE Std. C57.12.01 standard in terms of insulation and performs well in a resonant DC-DC converter. The measured winding and core losses under rated voltage and current are 117.9W and 72.4W respectively.

A novel non-intrusive power supplement equipment design for electronic transformers

Abstract:Electronic transformers (ET), as standard measuring equipment for voltage and current, are widely utilized in today's digital substations. Usually, the electronic transformers are installed on the high-voltage side which normally has no grounding connector, making the power supplements of the ETs somehow difficult. To date, the majority of power supplement methods are typically indirect methods with low efficiency and high cost. Moreover, the installation and maintenance are also inconvenient. In order to overcome all those drawbacks, a new solution that upgrades ETs into a self-powering device by employing magnetoelectric energy harvester is proposed in this paper. Some preliminary experiments have been conducted to prove its feasibility. It is highly possible that it will become a better way to power the electronic transformers. © 2013 IEEE.

Field Diagnosis on Transformers for Wind Turbine Applications

Abstract:Distribution transformers used in wind turbine applications are exposed to additional stress caused by permanent mechanical vibrations, strong load cycling and harsh climatic conditions. These influences can cause an accelerated ageing of the insulation system and shortening of the life expectancy of these essential components of wind power stations. To avoid spontaneous failure of the transformer, regular on site diagnosis contributes to an increased reliability of the whole power system by early detection of the degradation of the insulation system. An induced voltage test with partial discharge measurement is the most significant and productive method for the assessment of the dielectric condition. The most efficient way with respect to availability and logistics is to perform the induced voltage test on-site. Because of the very limited space inside the wind power systems, specialized test equipment was developed for the regular on-site inspection. This compact test voltage source is based on a small IGBT inverter with filter and step-up transformer. It comprises a state of the art control computer to enable a closed loop control of the test voltage. The test voltage source is divided into three small transport units (boxes) and can be used directly in the nacelle. First field tests in 2017 proved the suitability of the compact test voltage source to perform induced voltage tests with accompanying partial discharge measurement. Such field tests were executed continuously throughout the last years and it could be proven that the test system could be integrated into the different service regimes. The test system is suitable for the on-site diagnosis of any kind of cast-resin and distribution transformer too.

Abstract:Modern power grids are undergoing a significant transformation with the massive integration of renewable, decentralized, and electronically interfaced energy sources, alongside new digital and wireless communication technologies. This transition necessitates the widespread adoption of robust online diagnostic and monitoring tools. Sensors, known for their intuitive and smart capabilities, play a crucial role in efficient condition monitoring, aiding in the prediction of power outages and facilitating the digital twinning of power equipment. This review comprehensively analyzes various sensor technologies used for monitoring power transformers, focusing on the critical need for reliable and efficient fault detection. The study explores the application of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, optical fiber sensors, wireless sensing networks, chemical sensors, ultra-high-frequency (UHF) sensors, and piezoelectric sensors in detecting parameters such as partial discharges, core condition, temperature, and dissolved gases. Through an extensive literature review, the sensitivity, accuracy, and practical implementation challenges of these sensor technologies are evaluated. Significant advances in real-time monitoring capabilities and improved diagnostic precision are highlighted in the review. It also identifies key challenges such as environmental susceptibility and the long-term stability of sensors. By synthesizing the current research and methodologies, this paper provides valuable insights into the integration and optimization of sensor technologies for enhancing transformer condition monitoring and reliability in modern power systems.

Abstract:Digital substations are essential components of the smart grids of the future. Advanced operation and control strategies should be implemented there by acting on data in a digital form. However, the data quality hugely depends on the input analog signals sourced from instrument transformers. Although considerable efforts have been made to improve their operation, many problems still remain unsolved. The main focus of this study is designing a new voltage transformer based on a resistive voltage divider. The test results have revealed that a few characteristics of the new transformer are significantly better compared to many existing solutions. The new measuring device is now being equipped with a digital interface supporting both IEC 61850 and IEEE C37.118, which is seen as a prerequisite for utilizing the developed transformer in a digital substation environment. In order to make sure that the signal conversion into the digital domain is correct, a test bed has been developed and is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Since power transformers are the most important pieces of equipment in electricity transmission and distribution systems, special attention must be paid to their maintenance in order to keep them in good condition for a long time. This paper reviews the main steps in the process of diagnosing the health of power transformer insulation, which involves the science of analysing the gases dissolved in power transformer oil for effective identification of faults. An accurate diagnosis of incipient faults is favourable to sustainable development and necessary to maintain a reliable supply of electricity. The methods presented for fault diagnosis in mineral-oil-immersed power transformers are divided into analytical and graphical methods and have been found to be simple, economical and effective. After describing the methods, both their strengths and weaknesses were identified, and over the years, the methods were complemented to provide highly accurate information, validated by field inspections. This paper focuses on practical information and applications to manage maintenance based on accurate and up-to-date data. The contents of this paper will be of particular use to engineers who manufacture, monitor and/or use high-power transformers in the energy sector, as well as to undergraduate, master's and PhD students interested in such applications.

Abstract:Electric power networks are experiencing significant changes as a result of widespread adoption of power electronics (PE)-based apparatuses. Power electronics converters are substantially different from synchronous machines which have been used during decades. The different nature of power electronics converters includes some limitations (like very limited overload capability and available inertia) and also some important advantages (like total controllability) which require to completely revise and restructure the way we address the design and analysis of power systems. PE-based converters are present at the generation, transmission, and distribution levels. In the field of power transmission and distribution, HVDC and FACTS technologies have helped to expand network power transfer capability and to increase operation flexibilities over the past 30 plus years. In recent years, more creative (or impactful) innovations in power electronics based T&D apparatus have been emerging. Examples are VSC based HVDC links, PE-based fault current limiters, and solid state transformers. In parallel, various novel PE-application concepts have been proposed and some have found commercial applications. They include, for example, smart wires, electric springs, ground fault neutralizers, soft-open switches, PE-assisted transformers, grid edge PE devices and PE-enabled active protection schemes. As the future power systems will be increasingly populated by power electronics, there is also a need to develop new knowledge on how to understand, analyze and engineer modern and future power systems.

Abstract:This study delves into the fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction, as proposed by Michael Faraday, and their applications in generators and transformers. Through a series of carefully designed experiments, the relationship between changing magnetic fields and induced electromotive force (emf) is systematically explored. The collected data, aligned with theoretical expectations, reaffirms Faraday's laws, showcasing the direct link between varying magnetic fields and induced emf. A graphical representation further illustrates the linear relationship between the rate of change of magnetic flux and induced emf, in accordance with Faraday's Second Law. The implications of these findings extend to the functioning of generators and transformers, highlighting the role of electromagnetic induction in converting mechanical energy to electricity and facilitating energy transfer. While potential sources of error are acknowledged, the successful experimental validation of Faraday's laws enriches our understanding of electromagnetism's core principles and their real-world applications.

Abstract:Electric power infrastructures are considered to be the most critical. The required monitoring of electricity networks is achieved using instrument transformers. The instrument transformer operating conditions must be kept steady, within safe limits. However, this entails comprehension of the several reasons that lead to failure. These reasons can introduce condition assessment monitoring techniques aiming to protect this type of electrical equipment and maybe contribute on their predictive maintenance. This paper describes the probable failures in high voltage instrument transformers with operating voltages of 150 kV and 400 kV, the rate and trend of failures as well as their basic sources. More specifically, this research has been applied for the 150 kV and 400 kV instrument transformers that are installed at the Hellenic Electricity Transmission Network. The results of this work will provide valuable insights about failure cause and operational life of measuring transformers in transmission networks allowing them to improve monitoring and resilience of the networks.

Abstract:The paper is aimed at investigating the number and location of microphones required to accurately calculate the sound power level of a harmonic noise source. The measurement procedure performed is based on the IEC standard for the determination of transformer sound power level. The current procedure defines numerous measurement points around the tested transformer. Reducing the number of measurement points could significantly speed up the measurement procedure when a transformer is tested during the manufacturing process. Within the research work, estimations on the number and location of measurement points are identified to accurately calculate sound power level. The approach is tested and validated using specially developed software in LabView, that allows inclusion or exclusion of measurement points from the sound power level calculations. To prevent harmonic wave interference, acoustic wave reflections and background noise, the measurement procedure took place in the anechoic chamber.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental validation of a numerical model of coupled processes within a three-phase medium-power dry-type electrical transformer. The analysis carried out employed a multi-disciplinary approach involving heat, fluid flow and electromagnetics. The thermal and fluid flow analysis was coupled with an electromagnetic model in order to examine the specific power losses within the coils and the core. The thermal boundary conditions, i.e. the local and temperature-dependent heat fluxes, were computed by considering a numerical model of the surrounding internal and external air. Moreover, separate numerical and analytical models were considered in order to obtain the anisotropic thermal conductivities for different types of coils and also for laminated cores. To validate the numerical model, experimental transformer temperature tests in the short-circuit, open-circuit, and under nominal parameters according to the current European Standards for dry-type transformers were performed. During the tests, temperatures were measured at selected points on elements of the transformer using thermocouples and thermometers, while on the external tank walls an infrared thermography was employed. The obtained numerical results showed that the prediction of the temperature distribution within the analyzed transformers and their surroundings was very accurate.
