Abstract:We introduce an interactive online resource for use by students and college instructors in introductory astronomy courses. The General Education Astronomy Source (GEAS) online tutor guides students developing mastery of core astronomical concepts and mathematical applications of general astronomy material. It contains over 12,000 questions, with linked hints and solutions. Students who master the material quickly can advance through the topics, while under-prepared or hesitant students can focus on questions on a certain topic for as long as needed, with minimal repetition. Students receive individual accounts for study and course instructors are provided with overview tracking information, by time and by topic, for entire cohorts of students. Diagnostic tools support self-evaluation and close collaboration between instructor and student, even for distance learners. An initial usage study shows clear trends in performance which increase with study time, and indicates that distance learners using these materials perform as well as or better than a comparison cohort of on-campus astronomy students. We are actively seeking new collaborators to use this resource in astronomy courses and other educational venues.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Helping students better understand scientific publications is one of the essential tasks of higher education. This paper presents a novel learning/reading environment that incorporates innovative scaffolding methods that aim to enable students to readily access open educational resources (OER) and read and comprehend the paper in a collaborative reading environment within a course. The new system, OER‐based Collaborative PDF Reader (OCPR), captures and characterizes students’ emerging information needs when they read a paper, while also auto‐recommending high quality OERs, e.g., presentation videos, slides, or Wikipedia pages, when students ask for clarifying content (OER‐based Scaffolding). The study was conducted in a course for students to read an article, ask questions, and rate resources suggested by the OCPR system. The preliminary results show that the students tend to ask elementary questions and rate video resources higher than other resources. The results will inform future improvement of the OCPR system.
Creating, Automating, and Assessing Online Homework in Introductory Statistics and Mathematics Classes

Abstract:Although textbook publishers offer course management systems, they do so to promote brand loyalty, and while an open source tool such as WeBWorK is promising, it requires administrative and IT buy-in. So supported in part by a College Access Challenge Grant from the Department of Education, we collaborated with other instructors to create online homework sets for three classes: Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Statistics for Behavioral Sciences I. After experimentation, some of these question pools are now created by Mathematica programs that can generate data sets from specified distributions, generate random polynomials that factor in a given way, create image files of histograms, scatterplots, and so forth. These programs produce files that can be read by the software package, Respondus, which then uploads the questions into Blackboard Learn, the course management system used by the Connecticut State University system. Finally, we summarize five classes worth of student performance data along with lessons learned while working on this project.

Automated grading workflows for providing personalized feedback to open-ended data science assignments

Abstract:Open-ended assignments - such as lab reports and semester-long projects - provide data science and statistics students with opportunities for developing communication, critical thinking, and creativity skills. However, providing grades and formative feedback to open-ended assignments can be very time consuming and difficult to do consistently across students. In this paper, we discuss the steps of a typical grading workflow and highlight which steps can be automated in an approach that we call automated grading workflow. We illustrate how gradetools, a new R package, implements this approach within RStudio to facilitate efficient and consistent grading while providing individualized feedback. By outlining the motivations behind the development of this package and the considerations underlying its design, we hope this article will provide data science and statistics educators with ideas for improving their grading workflows, possibly developing new grading tools or considering use gradetools as their grading workflow assistant.

Grading Massive Open Online Courses Using Large Language Models

Abstract:Massive open online courses (MOOCs) offer free education globally to anyone with a computer and internet access. Despite this democratization of learning, the massive enrollment in these courses makes it impractical for one instructor to assess every student's writing assignment. As a result, peer grading, often guided by a straightforward rubric, is the method of choice. While convenient, peer grading often falls short in terms of reliability and validity. In this study, we explore the feasibility of using large language models (LLMs) to replace peer grading in MOOCs. Specifically, we use two LLMs, GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, across three MOOCs: Introductory Astronomy, Astrobiology, and the History and Philosophy of Astronomy. To instruct LLMs, we use three different prompts based on the zero-shot chain-of-thought (ZCoT) prompting technique: (1) ZCoT with instructor-provided correct answers, (2) ZCoT with both instructor-provided correct answers and rubrics, and (3) ZCoT with instructor-provided correct answers and LLM-generated rubrics. Tested on 18 settings, our results show that ZCoT, when augmented with instructor-provided correct answers and rubrics, produces grades that are more aligned with those assigned by instructors compared to peer grading. Finally, our findings indicate a promising potential for automated grading systems in MOOCs, especially in subjects with well-defined rubrics, to improve the learning experience for millions of online learners worldwide.

Abstract:Within the efforts to bring frontline interactive astrophysics and astronomy to the classroom, the Hands on Universe (HOU) developed a set of exercises and platform using real data obtained by some of the most advanced ground and space observatories. The backbone of this endeavour is a new free software Web tool - Such a Lovely Software for Astronomy based on Image J (Salsa J). It is student-friendly and developed specifically for the HOU project and targets middle and high schools. It allows students to display, analyze, and explore professionally obtained astronomical images, while learning concepts on gravitational dynamics, kinematics, nuclear fusion, electromagnetism. The continuous evolving set of exercises and tutorials is being completed with real (professionally obtained) data to download and detailed tutorials. The flexibility of the Salsa J platform tool enables students and teachers to extend the exercises with their own observations. The software developed for the HOU program has been designed to be a multi-platform, multi-lingual experience for image manipulation and analysis in the classroom. Its design enables easy implementation of new facilities (extensions and plugins), minimal in-situ maintenance and flexibility for exercise plugin. Here, we describe some of the most advanced exercises about astrophysics in the classroom, addressing particular examples on gravitational dynamics, concepts currently introduced in most sciences curricula in middle and high schools.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:Hundreds of thousands of astronomy education activities exist, but their discoverability and quality is highly variable. The web platform for astronomy education activities, astroEDU, presented in this paper tries to solve these issues. Using the familiar peer-review workflow of scientific publications, astroEDU is improving standards of quality, visibility and accessibility, while providing credibility to these astronomy education activities. astroEDU targets activity guides, tutorials and other educational activities in the area of astronomy education, prepared by teachers, educators and other education specialists. Each of the astroEDU activities is peer-reviewed by an educator as well as an astronomer to ensure a high standard in terms of scientific content and educational value. All reviewed materials are then stored in a free open online database, enabling broad distribution in a range of different formats. In this way astroEDU is not another web repository for educational resources but a mechanism for peer-reviewing and publishing high-quality astronomy education activities in an open access way. This paper will provide an account on the implementation and first findings of the use of astroEDU.
Mechanical TA 2: A System for Peer Grading with TA Support

Abstract:Mechanical TA 2 (MTA2) is an open source web-based peer grading application that leverages trusted TA graders to incentivize high-quality peer review. A previous, prototype implementation of MTA proved the value of the concept, but was neither suitable for use at scale nor easily extensible; MTA2 is a complete reimplementation of the system that overcomes these hurdles. MTA2 serves two, interconnected purposes: facilitating practical peer grading and serving as a testbed for experimentation with different peer grading mechanisms. The system is characterized by a modular design that makes customization easy; support for dividing students into different pools based on their peer-grading prowess; mechanisms for automated calibration and spot checking; and the ability for students to appeal grades and to give feedback about individual reviews.

Towards Automated Code Assessment with OpenJupyter in MOOCs

Abstract:The popularity of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as a means of delivering education to large numbers of students has been growing steadily over the last decade. As technology improves, more educational content is becoming readily available to the public. JupyterLab, an open-source web-based interactive development environment (IDE), is also becoming increasingly popular in education, however, it is so far primarily used in small classroom settings. JupyterLab can provide a more interactive, hands-on, and collaborative learning experience for students in MOOCs, and it is highly customizable and can be accessed from anywhere. To capitalize on these benefits, we have developed OpenJupyter, which integrates JupyterLab at scale with MOOCs, enhancing the student learning experience and providing hands-on exercises for data science courses, making them more interactive and engaging. While MOOCs provide access to education for a large number of students, one of the significant challenges is providing effective and timely feedback to learners. OpenJupyter includes an auto-assessment capability that addresses this problem in MOOCs by automating the evaluation process and providing feedback to learners in a timely manner. In this paper, we provide an overview of the architecture of OpenJupyter, its scalability in the context of MOOCs, and its effectiveness in addressing the auto-assessment challenge. We also discuss the Advantages and limitations associated with using OpenJupyter in a MOOC context and provide a reference for educators and researchers who wish to implement similar tools. Our efforts aim to foster an open educational environment in the field of programming by providing learners with an interactive learning tool and a streamlined technical setup, allowing them to acquire and test their knowledge at their own pace.

A New Resource for College Distance Education Astronomy Laboratory Exercises

Abstract:This article introduces a set of distance education astronomy laboratory exercises for use by college students and instructors and discuss first usage results. This General Astronomy Education Source (GEAS) exercise set contains eight two-week projects designed to guide students through both core content and mathematical applications of general astronomy material. Projects are divided between hands-on activities and computer-aided analyses of modern astronomical data. The suite of online resources includes student and instructor guides, laboratory report templates, learning objectives, video tutorials, plotting tools, and web-based applications that allow students to analyze both images and spectra of astronomical objects. A pilot usage study indicates that distance learners using these materials perform as well or better than a comparison cohort of on-campus students. We are actively seeking collaborators to use these resources in astronomy courses and other educational venues.

Abstract:We present a unique implementation of Python coding in an asynchronous object-oriented programming (OOP) framework to fully automate the process of collecting data with the George Mason University (GMU) Observatory's 0.8-meter telescope. The goal of this project is to perform automated follow-up observations for the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, while still allowing for human control, monitoring, and adjustments. Prior to our implementation, the facility was computer-controlled by a human observer through a combination of webcams, TheSkyX, ASCOM Dome, MaxIm DL, and a weather station. We have automated slews and dome movements, CCD exposures, saving FITS images and metadata, initial focusing, guiding on the target, using the ambient temperature to adjust the focus as the telescope cools through the rest of the night, taking calibration images (darks and flats), and monitoring local weather data. The automated weather monitor periodically checks various weather data from multiple sources to automate the decision to close the observatory during adverse conditions. We have organized the OOP code structure in such a way that each hardware device or important higher-level process is categorized as its own object class or "module" with associated attributes and methods, with inherited common methods across modules for code reusability. To allow actions to be performed simultaneously across different modules, we implemented a multithreaded approach where each module is given its own CPU thread on which to operate concurrently with all other threads. After the initial few modules (camera, telescope, dome, data I/O) were developed, further development of the code was carried out in tandem with testing on sky on clear nights. The code, in its current state, has been tested and used for observations on 171 nights, with more planned usage and feature additions.

Abstract:The smartness of a city is given by the technologies it put to use, and more than that, by the people empowered by such technologies; it is worth thinking about how people can be trained to be empowered by smart technologies, and how cities can become "educational." So, while sustainability and technology solutions for smart cities are strategic challenges, one of these is surely distance education and training. In this field, the Web offers many opportunities, such as the e-learning platforms where students can learn, according to their own needs and pace. The massive open online courses (MOOCs) are particular distance learning platforms, generally offering, so far, free courses on a huge amount of topics, and characterized by a (potentially) very high number of enrollments. In a MOOC, a teacher, or tutor, has a hard life when trying to follow and manage with the learning processes of thousands of students. In particular, assessment can be managed almost exclusively by letting the student answer questions in closed answers tests. This strategy has some didactic limits, while a valid alternative is to use peer assessment (PA) over more articulated assessment activities (e.g., open-ended questions). PA makes students grade their peers' answers, and provides learners with significant advantages, such as refining their knowledge of the subject matter, and developing their meta-cognitive skills. In this work, we present a software platform called K-OpenAnswer, which helps teachers to simulate the dynamic of a MOOC where PA is used. The system uses a machine learning technique, based on a modified version of the K-NN algorithm, and provides teachers with a statistical environment by which they can monitor the evolving dynamic of a simulated MOOC, according to the techniques we use to implement PA. An experimental evaluation is presented that highlights the advantages of using the system as a valid tool for the study of real MOOCs.

OpenCourseWare Observatory -- Does the Quality of OpenCourseWare Live up to its Promise?

Abstract:A vast amount of OpenCourseWare (OCW) is meanwhile being published online to make educational content accessible to larger audiences. The awareness of such courses among users and the popularity of systems providing such courses are increasing. However, from a subjective experience, OCW is frequently cursory, outdated or non-reusable. In order to obtain a better understanding of the quality of OCW, we assess the quality in terms of fitness for use. Based on three OCW use case scenarios, we define a range of dimensions according to which the quality of courses can be measured. From the definition of each dimension a comprehensive list of quality metrics is derived. In order to obtain a representative overview of the quality of OCW, we performed a quality assessment on a set of 100 randomly selected courses obtained from 20 different OCW repositories. Based on this assessment we identify crucial areas in which OCW needs to improve in order to deliver up to its promises.

Abstract:Abstract Massive open online courses (MOOCs) provide hundreds of students with teaching materials, assessment tools, and collaborative instruments. The assessment activity, in particular, is demanding in terms of both time and effort; thus, the use of artificial intelligence can be useful to address and reduce the time and effort required. This paper reports on a system and related experiments finalised to improve both the performance and quality of formative and summative assessments in specific data science courses. The system is developed to automatically grade assignments composed of R commands commented with short sentences written in natural language. In our opinion, the use of the system can (i) shorten the correction times and reduce the possibility of errors and (ii) support the students while solving the exercises assigned during the course through automated feedback. To investigate these aims, an ad-hoc experiment was conducted in three courses containing the specific topic of statistical analysis of health data. Our evaluation demonstrated that automated grading has an acceptable correlation with human grading. Furthermore, the students who used the tool did not report usability issues, and those that used it for more than half of the exercises obtained (on average) higher grades in the exam. Finally, the use of the system reduced the correction time and assisted the professor in identifying correction errors.
The CfAO's Astronomy Course in COSMOS: Curriculum Design, Rationale, and Application

Abstract:From 2001 to 2007, COSMOS provided a teaching and outreach venue for the Center for Adaptive Optics Professional Development Program (CfAO PDP). COSMOS is a four-week residential mathematics and science summer program for high-school students organized by the University of California on four of its campuses. Two topical science courses comprised each COSMOS cluster. An astronomy course has always formed a basis for the CfAO PDP-affiliated cluster. The course included a variety of pedagogical techniques to address a diversity of learners and goals. We outline the astronomy course---lectures, activities, etc.---and provide the rationale for what was taught, how it was aught, and when it was taught.

Abstract:In this paper we present the Open Software Services for Classrooms and Research (OSSCAR) platform. OSSCAR provides an open collaborative environment to develop and access educational resources in the form of web applications, for which various deployment methods are discussed and compared. To minimize efforts in the creation and use of new educational material, OSSCAR combines software tools that have emerged as standards with custom domain-specific ones. The technical solutions adopted to create and distribute content are described and motivated on the basis of reliability, sustainability, ease of uptake and use. Examples from courses in the domains of physics, chemistry, and materials science are shown to demonstrate the style and level of interactivity of typical applications. The tools presented are easy to use, and create a uniform and open environment exploitable by a large community of teachers, students, and researchers with the goal of facilitating learning and avoiding, when possible, duplication of efforts in creating teaching material. Drop Project: An automatic assessment tool for programming assignments

Abstract:Automated assessment tools (AATs) are software systems used in teaching environments to automate the evaluation of computer programs implemented by students. These tools can be used to stimulate the interest of computer science students in programming courses by providing quick feedback on their work and highlighting their mistakes. Despite the abundance of such tools, most of them are developed for a specific course and are not production-ready. Others lack advanced features that are required for certain pedagogical goals (e.g. Git integration) and/or are not flexible enough to be used with students having different computer literacy levels, such as first year and second year students.In this paper we present Drop Project (DP), an automated assessment tool built on top of the Maven build automation software. We have been using DP in our teaching activity since 2018, having received more than fifty thousand submissions between projects, classroom exercises, tests and homework assignments. The tool's automated feedback has allowed us to raise the difficulty level of the course's projects, while the grading process has become more efficient and consistent between different teachers. DP is an extensively tested, production-ready tool. The software's code and documentation are available in GitHub under an open-source software license.

Abstract:This paper outlines the feasibility of replacing a midterm assessment with a student-created digital media project. We examine the benefits of a peer review process for student-created pedagogy, the effectiveness of the student-generated digital media, and self-evaluations as a replacement for accepted forms of assessment in terms of: learning, assessment, and service provided. The outlined project also facilitates the creation of a video bank easily accessible for professors and students alike in introductory physics courses using the OpenStax College Physics textbook.1 We conclude that this non-traditional teaching and assessment model is both effective and timely as more college courses are being taught digitally and/or asynchronously.

Abstract:The objective of this paper was to examine the present state of geometric constructions in both international and national mathematics assessments. Additionally, it aimed to shed light on the noticeable lack of geometric construction items in these assessments and propose a solution to incorporate such items by utilizing a web-based mathematics assessment tool. After providing a brief summary of the unique benefits associated with geometric construction problems, the subsequent paper explored the development of a web-based mathematics assessment tool, the procedure for generating automatic evaluation GeoGebra applets for geometric construction problems, and their integration into Moodle learning management system (LMS). The purpose of this assessment tool was to enhance the evaluation of a substantially larger group of students within the realm of geometric constructions. The final section of the paper examined the difficulties encountered in the creation of the automatic evaluation applets and their incorporation into Moodle LMS. Through the development of such a web-based mathematics assessment tool, we enabled the evaluation of a significantly larger number of students, thus aiding not only national and international mathematics examinations but also assisting mathematics teachers in tracking students' scores and progress.
