Abstract:Study selection: Partial laminate veneers, defined as small ceramic restorations adhesively luted onto unprepared anterior teeth, are an interesting and conservative alternative to conventional ceramic and composite resin veneers in the anterior region. This literature review aimed to summarize the available laboratory and clinical data on ceramic partial laminate veneers. An electronic search of the MEDLINE/PubMed, EBSCO, and Web of Science databases was conducted. The keywords used were "partial veneer," "partial laminate veneer," "ceramic fragment," and "sectional veneer." The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. The risk of bias in the included studies was assessed using the QUIN tool. Results: Of the 266 identified articles, only 16 met the inclusion criteria (ten clinical reports, five laboratory studies, and one retrospective clinical study). To date, no randomized controlled clinical trials have been conducted. Most laboratory studies displayed a low risk of bias, with partial laminate veneers rendering adequate strength and color stability. Clinical reports have shown large variability in material selection, luting, and finishing/polishing protocols. Conclusions: Low-quality evidence is available for ceramic partial laminate veneers. Available data from laboratory studies suggest good mechanical and optical performances comparable to those of conventional ceramic and composite resin veneers. Further clinical studies with longer follow-up periods are warranted.
Survival and Complication Rates of Feldspathic, Leucite‐Reinforced, Lithium Disilicate and Zirconia Ceramic Laminate Veneers: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

Abstract:Objectives To analyze survival and complication rates for anterior and premolar laminate‐veneers out of different ceramic materials (feldspathic, leucite‐reinforced glass–ceramic [LRGC], lithium‐disilicate [LDS] and zirconia). Material and Methods A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases for clinical studies on ceramic laminate‐veneers with a minimum‐follow‐up of ≥ 1 year. The date of last search was on February 19, 2024. Survival, technical, esthetic and biological events were assessed for different laminate‐veneer materials at three observation periods (short‐ [1–3 years], mid‐ [4–6 years] and long‐term [≥ 7 years]). Results Twenty‐nine studies were included. Meta‐analysis revealed a pooled survival‐rate of 96.13% for feldspathic, 93.70% for LRGC and 96.81% for LDS at 10.4 years. No difference was found between materials. Complication rates (technical/esthetic/biological) were as follows: Feldspathic: 41.48%/19.64%/6.51%; LRGC: 29.87%/17.89%/4.4%; LDS: 6.1%/1.9%/0.45% at 10.4 years. Zirconia showed a 100% survival‐rate with no complications at 2.6 years. No long‐term data was available for zirconia. Conclusions Feldspathic, LRGC and LDS laminate‐veneers showed high survival‐rates at long‐term observation. LDS slightly outperforms feldspathic and LRGC laminate‐veneers with lower long‐term complication rates. More studies providing long‐term data on zirconia laminate‐veneers are needed. Clinical Significance Ceramic laminate‐veneers are a reliable treatment option. LDS may be preferred as a restorative material for long‐term success.

Abstract:Purpose This study aimed to evaluate how different tooth substrates affect the survival rate, shear bond strength, fracture strength, and mode of failure of laminate veneers (LVs). Methods This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. In vitro studies comparing the bonding of laminate veneers to different substrates were included. Electronic databases and manual searches were performed to identify relevant studies. Data on survival rate, shear bond strength, fracture strength, and failure modes were extracted and analyzed using Review Manager software. Results A total of 10 studies were included in the review, comprising 621 laminate veneers. The findings revealed that laminate veneers bonded to enamel substrate had lower failure rates than those bonded to tooth substrate with severely exposed dentin or existing composite restorations (ECRs). The failure modes observed were debonding, chipping, cracks, or fractures. Conclusions Bonding laminate veneers to enamel substrate showed higher survival rates compared to bonding to tooth substrates with severely exposed dentin or ECRs, underscoring the significance of enamel preservation. When dealing with exposed dentine surfaces or ECRs, it is crucial to perform appropriate surface treatment before luting to improve adhesion. This involves immediate dentine sealing, as well as the use of suitable primers and bonding agents.

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the survival and complication rates of resin composite laminate veneers. Methods: Randomized controlled trials and cohort studies with a minimum 2-year follow-up assessing survival and complication rates of resin composite laminate veneers on permanent dentition from 1998 to May 2022. Literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials electronic databases. References cited in the related reviews and included full-text articles were also hand-searched to further identify potentially relevant studies. Results: A total of 827 articles were identified. Twenty-two studies were considered for full-text review after the title and abstract screening stage. After exclusion, 7 studies (3 randomized controlled trials and 4 cohort studies) were included in the systematic review. Three published scales were adopted for the quality and risk of bias assessment. At the survival rate threshold, the overall heterogeneity (I 2 ) for randomized controlled trials was 50.5% (p = 0.108). The overall pooled survival rate of the randomized controlled trials was 88% (95% CI: 81% to 94%), with the mean follow-up time ranging from 24 to 97 months. Surface roughness, colour mismatch, and marginal discoloration were the most reported complications. Conclusion: Resin composite laminate veneers demonstrated moderately high survival rates for the entire sample and the direct laminate veneer group demonstrated higher survival rates than the indirect approach. Most of the complications were regarded as clinically acceptable with or without reintervention.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To evaluate clinical performance of the new CAD/CAM resin-matrix ceramics and compare it with ceramic partial coverage restorations. Materials and methods An electronic search of 3 databases (The National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE/PubMed), Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) was conducted. English clinical studies published between 2005 and September 2020 that evaluated the clinical performance of CAD/CAM resin-matrix ceramics inlays, onlays, or overlays were selected. The primary clinical question was applied according to PICOS strategy (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Study design). The included studies were individually evaluated for risk of bias according to the modified Cochrane Collaboration tool criteria. Results A total of 7 studies were included according to the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the included studies, 6 were randomized clinical trials while one study was longitudinal observational study without control group. According to the results of the included studies, the success rate of CAD/CAM resin-based composite ranged from 85.7 to 100% whereas the success rate reported for ceramic partial coverage restorations ranged from 93.3 to 100%. Fractures and debondings are found to be the most common cause of restorations failure. Conclusion CAD/CAM resin-based composite can be considered a reliable material for partial coverage restorations with clinical performance similar to glass ceramic restorations. However, this result needs to be confirmed in long-term evaluations. Clinical relevance CAD/CAM resin-based composites provide a potential alternative to ceramic indirect restorations. However, clinicians must be aware of the lake of knowledge regarding long-term outcome.

Abstract:Statement of problem The application of highly translucent multilayered zirconia ceramic in minimally invasive esthetic dentistry allows the achievement of both esthetics and strength with minimal thickness. Clinical studies that have assessed the performance of zirconia ultrathin veneers sintered with the conventional and speed procedure are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the effect of speed sintering processes on the translucency and clinical performance of zirconia laminate veneers. Material and methods Four participants had their teeth restored with 32 ultratranslucent zirconia laminate veneers. Based on the zirconia sintering procedure, the participants were randomly allocated into 2 groups. The teeth were prepared by selective reduction over trial restorations. Zirconia veneers were milled from multilayer zirconia blanks and sintered either by speed sintering or conventional sintering as specified by the manufacturer's recommendations. The intaglio surface of the veneers were airborne-particle abraded with 50-μm aluminum-oxide, and the veneers were then adhesively bonded to the teeth with translucent light-polymerizing resin cement. The modified California Dental Association (CDA)/Ryge criteria were used to assess participants at baseline and every 3 months for 12 months. The translucency and the color difference of the tooth before and after veneer restoration were evaluated. For statistical analysis, the Pearson chi squared test, independent t test, and paired t test were used (α=.05). Results Translucency and color differences were significantly higher in the conventionally sintered group ( P <.05). No restorations were lost. No significant differences were found between the 2 groups in the CDA/Ryge criteria or color parameter after follow-up intervals ( P >.05). The primary qualitative changes observed at the final recall were marginal integrity and marginal discoloration. The color match and zirconia surface were rated Alfa. Conclusions After 1 year of follow-up, both conventional and speed sintered ultrathin zirconia laminates showed satisfactory functional, esthetic, and color stability outcomes.

Abstract:Background: Patients' increasing interest in achieving optimal cosmetic outcomes and the widespread use of ultrathin ceramic veneers offer advantages such as high esthetic results and long-term durability. Several issues related to tooth preparation have been raised, including dental sensitivity, periodontal diseases, and increased treatment phases, in addition to complications associated with previous procedures, the treatment of which remains controversial to date. With the advancement of dental ceramic and its manufacturing techniques, it was widely used to manufacture ultrathin ceramic veneers with minimal preparation. Issues such as fracture and abfraction are the most common in ceramic veneers made of feldspathic ceramic due to their weak mechanical properties against various forces, which led to the emergence of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic manufactured using the heat-press technique. This has resulted in ultrathin ceramic veneers with a thickness of up to 0.1-0.2 mm easily bonded and finished as they have high mechanical properties and esthetic qualities that mimic natural tooth color and shape. The current cohort study aimed to evaluate the success rates of this kind of treatment for patients treated at our department. Materials and methods: This observational cohort study's sample comprised 60 ultrathin ceramic veneers manufactured from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic bonded to nonprepared upper teeth. The clinical performance of the studied sample was evaluated and monitored at monthly intervals (one month, three months, six months, and one year) using the clinical success evaluation based on Walton's principles adopted for evaluating the success and failure of fixed restorations. Results: Ultrathin ceramic veneers made from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, bonded to nonprepared teeth, proved to be a successful clinical and esthetic treatment option, with a clinical success rate of 100% during the entire follow-up period. Conclusions: This study's findings indicate that ultrathin ceramic veneers made from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, bonded to nonprepared teeth, are a successful clinical and esthetic treatment option, with a clinical success rate of 100% during the entire follow-up period.
Clinical Survival Rate and Laboratory Failure of Dental Veneers: A Narrative Literature Review

Abstract:There is a vast amount of published literature concerning dental veneers; however, the effects of tooth preparation, aging, veneer type, and resin cement type on the failure of dental veneers in laboratory versus clinical scenarios are not clear. The purpose of the present narrative review was to determine the principal factors associated with failures of dental veneers in laboratory tests and to understand how these factors translate into clinical successes/failures. Articles were identified and screened by the lead author in January 2024 using the keywords ''dental veneer", "complication", "survival rate", "failure", and "success rate" using PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. The inclusion criteria included articles published between January 1999 and January 2024 on the topics of preparation of a tooth, aging processes of the resin cement and veneer, translucency, thickness, fabrication technique of the veneer; shade, and thickness of the resin cement. The exclusion criteria included articles that discussed marginal and internal fit, microhardness, water sorption, solubility, polishability, occlusal veneers, retention, surface treatments, and wear. The results of the present review indicated that dental veneers generally have a high survival rate (>90% for more than 10 years). The amount of preserved enamel layer plays a paramount role in the survival and success rates of veneers, and glass-ceramic veneers with minimal/no preparation showed the highest survival rates. Fracture was the primary failure mechanism associated with decreased survival rate, followed by debonding and color change. Fractures increased in the presence of parafunctional activities. Fewer endodontic complications were associated with veneer restorations. No difference was observed between the maxillary and mandibular teeth. Clinical significance: Fractures can be reduced by evaluation of occlusion immediately after cementation and through the use of high-strength veneer materials, resin cements with low moduli, and thin layers of highly polished veneers. Debonding failures can be reduced with minimal/no preparation, and immediate dentin sealing should be considered when dentin is exposed. Debonding can also be reduced by preventing contamination from blood, saliva, handpiece oil, or fluoride-containing polishing paste; through proper surface treatment (20 s of hydrofluoric acid etching for glass ceramic followed by silane for 60 s); and through use of light-cured polymerization for thin veneers. Long-term color stability may be maintained using resin cements with UDMA-based resin, glass ceramic materials, and light-cure polymerization with thin veneers.
Fracture load of chairside CAD‐CAM veneers fabricated with pre‐and fully crystalized lithium disilicate ceramics

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the fracture load of chairside computer‐aided design and computer‐aided manufacturing (CAD‐CAM) veneers fabricated with two conventional pre‐crystallized and two fully crystallized lithium disilicate ceramic materials. Materials and Methods Seventy‐five chairside CAD‐CAM veneers (15 specimens/group) for maxillary right central incisors were fabricated with different lithium disilicate brands: (1) IPS e.max CAD; (2) Amber Mill; (3) Cerec Tessera; (4) n!ce Straumann; and (5) GC Initial LiSi Block. Restorations were cemented with resin luting cement (Variolink Esthetic, Ivoclar) to 3D‐printed resin dies. Bonded restorations received 5000 thermal cycles and then were loaded until fracture. Statistical analysis included One‐Way ANOVA. Results Conventional pre‐crystallized e.max CAD displayed the highest fracture load value (640 N), followed by fully‐crystallized n!ce Straumann (547 N), pre‐crystallized Cerec Tessera (503 N), pre‐crystallized Amber Mill (476 N), respectively; fully‐crystallized GC Initial LiSi Block (431 N) displayed the lowest values. When comparing the fracture load of recent lithium disilicate ceramic material to the e.max group, which acted as the control, significant differences were noted. The LiSi Block GC group, in particular, had considerably higher mean difference values (208.867, p < 0.001, 95% CI [89.63, 328.10]), as did the Amber Mill group (164.200, p = 0.002, 95% CI [44.96, 283.44]) and CEREC Tessera group (137.533, p = 0.016, 95% CI [18.30, 256.77]). The e.max and n!ce Straumann groups had no statistically significant differences in mean scores (92.933, p = 0.198, 95% CI [−26.30, 212.17]). These findings imply that the clinical performance of recent lithium disilicate veneers varies when compared to the e.max CAD group. Conclusions The fracture load of chairside CAD‐CAM lithium disilicate veneers for maxillary central incisors varies according to the type of ceramic brands. Conventional pre‐crystallized e.max CAD displayed higher fracture load than the recent pre‐ and fully‐crystallized lithium disilicate materials, emphasizing the significance of choosing the right product based on the desired clinical outcome.

Randomized Clinical Trial on Direct Composite and Indirect Ceramic Laminate Veneers in Multiple Diastema Closure Cases: Two-Year Follow-Up

Abstract:In recent years, laminate veneer restorations should be considered as a minimally invasive treatment option for several aesthetic reasons. This study compared direct composite veneers' and indirect ceramic laminate veneers' longevity in multiple diastema closures. A total of 28 patients with a mean age of 26 years received 60 direct resin composite (Estelite Asteria; n = 14) and 60 indirect ceramic veneers (IPS e.max Press; n = 14) on the maxillary anterior teeth with diastema closure. Veneers were evaluated at baseline and thereafter every 6 months for up to 2 years using USPHS criteria. Data were analyzed with Fisher's exact and chi-squared tests, while Kaplan-Meier curve was used to assess time to event. In total, three failures were observed in the form of debonding (n = 1) and fracture (n = 2) in the indirect ceramic veneers. No significant difference was observed between the survival rates of composite and ceramic veneers (Estelite Asteria: 93.4%, IPS e.max Press: 95%; p > 0.05). The overall survival rate was 94.2% (Kaplan-Meier). Staining (n = 11) and roughness (n = 14) were frequently observed for the resin composite veneers up to the final recall. Thereby, the preliminary results from this clinical trial comparing two veneer materials indicated that their survival rates were statistically similar. However, surface quality changes were more frequent in the composite veneer material.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the marginal roughness and marginal fitness of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) laminate veneers with different materials and thicknesses, and to provide a reference for the clinical application of laminate veneers. METHODS:The butt-to-butt type laminate veneers were prepared on resin typodonts, the preparations were scanned, and the laminate veneers were manufactured by chairside CAD/CAM equipment. The laminate veneers were divided into four groups (n=9) according to the materials (glass-matrix ceramics and resin-matrix ceramics) and thickness (0.3 mm and 0.5 mm) of the veneers, with a total of 36. The marginal topo-graphies of each laminate veneer were digitally recorded by stereomicroscope, and the marginal rough-nesses of the laminate veneers were determined by ImageJ software. The marginal fitness of the laminate veneers was measured by a fit checker and digital scanning and measuring method. At the same time, the mechanical properties of glass-matrix ceramic and resin-matrix ceramic bars (n=20) were tested by a universal testing device. RESULTS:The marginal roughness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers was (24.48±5.55) μm and (19.06±5.75) μm, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The marginal roughness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers was (6.13±1.27) μm and (6.84±2.19) μm, respectively, without a statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The marginal roughness of the glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers was higher than that of the resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The marginal fitness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers were (66.30±26.71) μm and (85.48±30.44) μm, respectively. The marginal fitness of 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers were (56.42±19.27) μm and (58.36±8.33) μm, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among the 4 groups (P>0.05). For glass-matrix ceramics, the flexural strength was (327.40±54.25) MPa, the flexural modulus was (44.40±4.39) GPa, and the modulus of resilience was (1.24±0.37) MPa. For resin-matrix ceramics, the flexural strength was (173.71±16.61) MPa, the flexural modulus was (11.88±0.51) GPa, and the modulus of resilience was (1.29±0.27) MPa. The flexural strength and modulus of glass-matrix ceramics were significantly higher than those of resin-matrix ceramics (P < 0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference in the modulus of resilience between the two materials (P>0.05). CONCLUSION:The marginal roughness of CAD/CAM glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers is greater than that of resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers, but there was no statistically significant difference in marginal fitness among them. Increasing the thickness can reduce the marginal roughness of glass-matrix ceramic laminate veneers, but has no effect on the marginal roughness of resin-matrix ceramic laminate veneers.
Preheated restorative composite resin for luting ceramic laminate veneers: An optimized technique report

Abstract:Resin cements are traditionally used to lute ceramic laminate veneers due to their lower viscosity, which facilitates a fast restoration seating. However, resin cements have lower mechanical properties compared to restorative composite resins. Thus, restorative composite resin is an alternative luting agent with lower marginal degradation as a potential advantage for clinical longevity. This article presents an application of preheated restorative composite resin for adhesive luting of laminate veneers with a predictable clinical technique for seating and marginal quality. By addressing important factors that influence film thickness, the predictable presented workflow should overcome this major concern when luting with restorative composite resin, therefore enabling the benefits of using a restorative material with better mechanical properties without the drawback of higher film thickness. Considering the clinical evidence that the adhesive interface between the dental substrate and restoration is the weak link of adhesive indirect restorations, bonding the restoration with preheated restorative composite resins (PRCR) may provide an interface filled with a restorative resin material, presenting optimized mechanical properties. Comparative Evaluation of Two Different Preparation Designs and Materials on the Fracture Resistance of Laminate Veneers: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:Introduction Laminate veneers are thin porcelain or composite resin shells bonded to the front of teeth for cosmetic enhancement. The design of the tooth preparation is crucial; it involves minimal enamel removal to ensure a proper fit and strong bond. This careful preparation increases the veneers' fracture resistance by preserving tooth structure and evenly distributing stress, ensuring durability and natural appearance. Aim Our aim was to determine the fracture resistance of two preparation designs with two different materials for the fabrication of laminate veneers. Materials and methods An in vitro study was conducted on 40 laminate veneers divided into two groups based on the material used: Group 1 (Cerec Tessera (Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, NC, USA)) and Group 2 (Upcera, Shenzhen, China). Each group was further divided into two sub-groups based on tooth preparation designs: butt joint and feather edge. The fracture resistance of these veneers following thermocycling was determined, and the mode of fracture was evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Results Feather edge preparation with Cerec Tessera laminate veneer restoration demonstrated the highest fracture resistance at 111.5 N, followed by butt joint preparation with Cerec Tessera laminate veneer restoration, which showed a fracture resistance of 90.8 N. The study identified laminate fractures as the most common type of fracture observed in the veneer restorations, followed by cement interface fractures. Conclusion The study suggests that the feather edge preparation design contributed to higher fracture resistance compared to the butt joint design. This finding aligns with the idea that modifying the preparation design can have a significant impact on the overall strength and durability of veneer restorations. The use of Cerec Tessera, especially in combination with the feather edge design, yielded the maximum fracture resistance.

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of monolithic zirconia laminate veneers (MZLV) compared to lithium disilicate laminate veneers (LDLV). Materials and methods: Sixty resin replicas, each prepared with depths of 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, and 1 mm, were produced using a 3D printer from acrylic teeth. Laminate veneers of these thicknesses were milled from pre-sintered monolithic zirconia (3rd generation) and lithium disilicate blocks. The intaglio surface of MZLV was treated with air abrasion using 110 μm diameter silica-modified aluminium oxide particles and ceramic primer, while LDLV was etched with etchant gel and treated with the ceramic primer before cementation with resin cement. Vertical marginal discrepancy (VMD) was assessed using a stereomicroscope, and a load-to-failure test was conducted using a universal testing machine. Failure modes were evaluated macroscopically on fractured surfaces. Data were analysed statistically using Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction (α = 0.05). Results: LDLV samples exhibited significantly larger VMD compared to MZLV samples across all thicknesses, especially in cervical, palatal, and mean data. Within the LDLV group, load-to-fracture values for 0.7 mm and 1.0 mm thicknesses were similar, whereas for 0.5 mm thickness, it was significantly lower. In the MZLV group, load-to-fracture values were lower for 0.7 mm and 1.0 mm thicknesses compared to LDLV, but higher for 0.5 mm thickness. Conclusions: Material choice and restoration thickness significantly influence laminate veneer restorations' success. MZLV generally exhibits superior vertical marginal fit compared to LDLV, with varying load-to-failure values across different thicknesses. Clinical management of debonding in MZLV is simpler compared to restoration fracture in LDLV. Clinical relevance: Considering clinical factors, MZLV may be a preferable option to LDLV for this restoration with the thickness of 0.5 mm.

Abstract:Objectives To evaluate and compare the optical properties and relative translucency parameter of CAD-CAM restorative materials. Methods Four CAD-CAM materials were evaluated: Lava Ultimate (LU), Grandio Blocs (GB), VITA Enamic (VE), and VITA Mark II (VM). Disk-shaped samples in shade A2-HT were prepared (n = 10) and polished to 1.00 ± 0.01 mm of thickness. Scattering (S), absorption (K), albedo ( a ) coefficient, transmittance (T%), light reflectivity (RI), infinite optical thickness ( X ∞ ), and radiative transfer coefficients ( μ a , and μ ′ S ) were calculated using Kubelka-Munk method and Thennadil's semi-empirical approach. Root Mean Square Error ( RMSE ) and Goodness of Fit (GFC) were used as performance optical behavior. Translucency differences were evaluated using the relative translucency parameter (RTP 00 ) and 50:50 % translucency perceptibility and acceptability thresholds (TPT 00 and TAT 00 ). Results The spectral distribution of S, K, T%, RI, and X ∞ was wavelength-dependent. GFC and RMSE values indicated good spectral behavior matches and good comparative spectral values for RI in LU-GB, LU-VE, and GB-VE, and for K in VE-VM. VM displayed the highest scattering values across the wavelengths, while VE and VM showed lower absorption at shorter wavelengths. LU and GB had the highest transmittance. The X ∞ values indicated that all 1.0 mm thick materials could be influenced by the background. No good spectral match and no good comparative spectral values were found between CAD-CAM materials and anterior bovine maxillary specimens. VM had the lowest RTP 00 values with perceptible and unacceptable differences compared to CAD-CAM materials evaluated. Significance Understanding the optical behavior of different CAD-CAM materials was essential for guiding clinicians in material selection and optimizing their clinical performance. The findings confirm that the different compositions and microstructure impact the optical properties and translucency of CAD-CAM restorative materials.

Abstract:CAD/CAM occlusal veneers have been developed for minimally invasive prosthetic restoration of eroded teeth. Marginal adaptation and fracture resistance are crucial for the long-term survivability and clinical success of such restorations. Virgilite-based lithium disilicate glass-ceramic is a newly introduced material with claims of high strength. However, constructing occlusal veneers from this material of varying thickness has not been investigated.

[Application of all-ceramic laminates veneer with Vita VM9 in clinic]

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effects of all-ceramic veneers in clinic fabricated by computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system and veneered with Vita VM9. Methods: 54 all-ceramic veneers were made for 12 patients. The patients were divided into three groups: Tetracycline staining group, fluorosis group and devitalization group. The color of patients' teeth was checked before and after laminates with Shade Eye. All-ceramic veneers was checked on the white background and abutment background. The value of L*, a* and b* were calculated to compare the color difference among 3 groups. The color, fitness and fracture of all-ceramic veneers were checked in clinic after restoration every 3 months. Results: All-ceramic veneers as a replacement for discolored teeth showed good appearance. The substructures and veneers showed significant color difference between white background and abutment background in tetracycline staining group and devitalization group, but there was no significant color difference in fluorosis group. All veneers had good esthetic effect, excellent marginal fit, good gingival and adjacent condition. The fracture was not found in clinic. Conclusion: The effects of all-ceramic veneers were perfect in color, fitness and stability to fracture. Fluorosis teeth is the best indication for all-ceramic veneers. To tetracycline teeth and devital teeth, the fundic porcelain with deep color should be chosen, or an opaquing material be applied as fundus in all-ceramic veneers repairing.

Abstract:Objectives To assess the feasibility of producing 3D‐printed intracoronal restorations, thin and ultrathin veneers, and to compare their mechanical behavior, accuracy, biological, and stain susceptibility to the currently applied milled restorations. Materials and Methods The databases were comprehensively searched for relevant records up to January 2024 without language restrictions. All studies that assessed 3D‐printed partial coverage restorations including inlays, onlays, laminate, and occlusal veneers were retrieved. Results The web search yielded a total of 1142 records, with 8 additional records added from websites at a later stage. Only 17 records were ultimately included in the review. The included records compared 3D‐printed; alumina‐based‐ and zirconia ceramics, lithium disilicate ceramics, polymer infiltrated ceramics, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), resin composites, and acrylic resins to their CNC milled analogs. Abstract:Purpose: The aim was to investigate the load bearing capacity of different pressable lithium disilicates cemented as occlusal veneers on molars. Materials and methods: One control group and six test groups were formed consisting of 20 specimens each (n = 20). The six test groups differed in the utilizing pressable lithium disilicate to fabricate occlusal veneers. As a control group, "group Lis", the lithium disilicate with the highest reported flexural strength was used (initial LiSi Press, GC Europe; Leuven, Belgium / flexural strength: 508 MPa). The test groups consisted of other pressable lithium disilicates with lower flexural strength values: "Ema" (IPS e.max press), "Vit" (VITA Ambria), "Liv" (Livento Press), "Amb" (Amber Press), "Mas" (Amber Press Master) and "Ros" (Rosetta SP)". After the preparation of 140 extracted human molars, which included the removal of the central enamel, the specimens were scanned using a desktop scanner. With the aid of a design software, the occlusal veneers were designed in a standardized thickness of 0.5 mm. To fabricate the restorations, all tested materials were processed using heat-pressing technique. All restorations were adhesively cemented. Afterwards, the specimens underwent cyclic fatigue during an aging procedure in a chewing simulator (1'200'000 chewing-cycles, 49 N force, 5-55°C temperature changes). Subsequently, the specimens were statically loaded and the load which was necessary to fracture the specimen (Fmax) were measured. Differences between the groups were compared applying the Kruskal-Wallis (KW) test and the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney-Test (WMW: p < 0.05). The two-parameter Weibull distribution values were calculated. Results: The fatigue resistance was 100% for the groups Lis, Vit, Liv, Amb, Mas and Ros, whereas the group Ema showed a fatigue resistance of 95%. The control group Lis showed median Fmax values of 2'328 N. The median Fmax values for the test groups ranged between 1'753 N (Vit) and 2'490 N (Ros). Statistically significant difference was observed among the groups Lis (control) and Vit (KW: p < 0.001). Weibull distribution presented the highest shape values for the group Ros (12.83) and the lowest values for the group Ema (4.71). Conclusion: Regarding their load-bearing capacity different pressable lithium disilicates can be recommended to fabricate ultra-thin occlusal veneers on molars when restoring occlusal tooth wear.
