Abstract:Tin dioxide(SnO2) nanoparticles were successfully filled into the cavity of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) by using a novel molten salt filling method at a low temperature,and the mass fraction of SnO2 is up to 60%.The SnO2@CNTs showed higher lithium ions storage capacity and better charge-discharge cycling performance than SnO2 nanoparticles,which is attributed to the unique structure of SnO2@CNTs: the CNTs buffer the destroy coming from the volume charge during the charge-discharge process,provide more space for the storage of lithium ions and enhance the conductivity of composite material.

Abstract:Searching for high-performance electrode materials with rapid charge/discharge and high cycling stability is pivotal to broaden the applications of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we report a simple nanochannel-confined synthesis technology of ultrafine Nb2O5 (<10 nm) nanoparticles encapsulated into carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hybrids for LIBs electrode materials. The three crystal forms of Nb2O5 can be respectively obtained simply by changing the temperature of thermal treatment. The ultrafine Nb2O5 nanoparticles dominated by the inner diameter of CNTs expose very high lithiation active sites. The fascinating nanostructure can also possess high structural stability with rapid electron transfer rate. Consequently, the orthorhombic Nb2O5/CNTs hybrids show a maximum specific capacity of 207 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), which can be maintained 170 mAh g(-1) after 1000 cycles. More importantly, a specific capacity of 108 mAh g(-1) can still be achieved even at 10 A g(-1), much higher than CNTs surface loaded Nb2O5 nanoparticles hybrids. Regulating the interfacial behavior of carbon nanotubes for fast lithium storage

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been recognized as a versatile platform to integrating with various electroactive materials for boosting the comprehensive electrochemical performance. However, CNTs with distinct interfacial characters may play different roles in the subsequent lithiation/delithiation process. Accordingly, systematically engineering the interface of CNTs on the lithium storage behavior is of fundamental significance but remains rare. Herein, the lithium storage performance of boron-doped carbon nanotubes (B-CNT), acid activated carbon nanotubes (aCNT) and commercial carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been systematically studied. We demonstrate that the B-CNT features as a prominent fast charging anode in terms of excellent rate performance and long cycling stability at large current density (an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% can be achieved at a high current density of 10 A g−1). The electrochemical kinetic analyses indicate pseudo-capacitance dominated mechanism of B-CNT leads to faster electron/ion transport kinetics. In-depth theoretical simulation suggests that moderate lithium adsorption energy of B-CNT is important to balance the adsorption and release of Li ions, thus resulting fast lithium storage capacity. As a verification, the composite electrode with B-CNT as additive and silicon as anode material also shows outstanding rate performance. Therefore, these basic researches can provide valuable guidance for reasonable design of CNTs-based composite electrode materials toward high-rate batteries.

Abstract:Hybrid nanostructure is proposed to settle the sluggish kinetic problems of titanium niobates. Herein, 1D porous TiNb x O2+2.5 x (x = 2, 5, 6)/C hybrid nanotubes are controllably constructed through a sol-gel method. As anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), these TiNb x O2+2.5 x (x = 2, 5, 6)/C hybrid nanotubes show favorable electrochemical performances, especially the highly hybrid nanotubes (TiNb6O17/C) illustrate a high specific capacity of 438.2 mAh g−1 after 750 cycles (0.4 A g−1), and possess a competitive kinetic diffusion ability compared with other Nb-based anodes. Additionally, ex situ XRD analysis also confirms its structural stability and reversibility. As an extension, the TiNb6O17/C hybrid nanotubes deliver a full cell performance of 159.6 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g−1. Such favorable performances of TiNb6O17/C further testify the rationality of hybrid nanostructure. The product with highly conductive network guarantees the kinetic transmission of ions and electrons, and the confinement of the CNTs matrix on the nanoparticles effectively retrains their volume change, while ensuring the structural stability of hybrid nanotubes. Consequently, TiNb6O17/C hybrid nanotubes with high electrochemical performances and stable structure are proved to be promising anode material for future energy application.

Abstract:This paper reports a new type of nanostructure, carbon nanotubes@SnO2@carbon (CNTs@SnO2@C) coaxial nanocables, by homogeneous deposition of SnO2 and carbon layers in sequence on CNTs templates. The CNTs@SnO2@C coaxial nanocables with carbon layers of different thickness have been prepared and applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit higher lithium storage capacities and better cycling performance compared to single CNTs and CNTs@SnO2 coaxial nanocables. This novel nanostructure, which integrates both electronic conductivity and buffering matrix design strategies, can be responsible for the improved lithium storage performance.

Abstract:Nanocomposite particles of amorphous carbon-Li4Ti5O12 (C-LTO) and carbon nanotube-Li4Ti5O12 (CNT-LTO) were synthesized by solvothermal method and subsequent high-temperature calcination. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were applied to characterize the phase structure, particle morphology, and the coating structure. XRD analysis, TEM micrographs, HR-TEM images and SAED analysis revealed that both LTO particles exhibited a well- developed spinel nanocrystal structure with average sizes between 20-70 nm. The C-LTO particles exhibited roughly spherical shape coated by an amorphous carbon layer up to 10 nm in thickness. The CNT-LTO samples showed uniform square nanocrystals with edge length around 20 nm and nanoscale graphitic layers covering the surface, revealing the carbon nanotubes interconnection networks among the particle assemblies. Electrochemical studies of lithium insertion/extraction performance are evaluated by the galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Both LTO particles showed the superior initial discharge capacity of more than 200 mAh/g at 1/10C rate. The irreversible capacity of the C-LTO particles at more cycles was due to large polarization resulted from excessive carbon and possible residual precursors. The CNT-LTO particles show larger reversible capacity and enhanced electrochemical Li+ insertion/extraction kinetics at different cycling rates. The comparative structural and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that both nanoscale graphitic covering layers and the CNT interconnection networks increase the electronic conductivity and improve the kinetics rates of lithium insertion/extraction in the CNT-LTO particles.

Abstract:The demand for fast-charging of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in modern electric transportation and wearable electronics is rapidly growing. However, commercially available graphite anodes still suffer from slow kinetics of lithium-ion diffusion and severe safety concerns of lithium plating when achieving the fast-charging goal. Here, it is demonstrated that the Li-ion diffusion kinetics of orthorhombic Nb2O5 nanotubes (T-Nb2O5 NTs) is enhanced by atomically precise manufacturing of nanoarchitectures. The controlled fabrication of T-Nb2O5 NTs with wall thicknesses from 24 to 43 nm is realized via atomic layer deposition (ALD) using electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofibers as a sacrificing template. The wall thickness of T-Nb2O5 NTs can be precisely tuned by adjusting the number of ALD cycles. The relationship between the wall thicknesses and electrochemical performances is investigated in detail. The electrochemical kinetic analysis suggests that the lithium storage in T-Nb2O5 NTs is dominated by surface and intercalation pseudocapacitance. The morphology of T-Nb2O5 crystallites is found to have significant effects on the Li-ion insertion/extraction kinetics and the performance of the electrodes in LIBs. The resulting T-Nb2O5 NTs exhibit fast charge-storage kinetics and enable highly reversible insertion/extraction of Li ions without a phase change. Abstract:Current commercial lithium ion battery (LIB) anodes comprising graphite and Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 inevitably suffer from safety risk and low energy density. Hence, a novel anode material of Ti 0.95 Nb 0.95 O 4 /C hybrid nanotubes was developed via a modified sol–gel method combined with subsequent calcination. The hybrids consist of Ti 0.95 Nb 0.95 O 4 quantum dots that are homogeneously embedded in the walls of porous bamboo-like CNTs. The high capacity feature of multiple redox couples of Ti–Nb–O based anodes is demonstrated by ex situ XPS in the hybrids. With the advantages of stimulative lithium storage, increased conductivity and robust mechanical properties due to the unique hybrid structure, the hybrids exhibit a high capacity (516.8 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 ), superior long-term cycling stability (142.7 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 3000 cycles) and an ultra-high rate capability (234.6 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 125 mA h g −1 at 8 A g −1 ). Meanwhile, the hybrids showed superior electrochemical performance compared with the reported Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 and Ti–Nb–O based anodes. Furthermore, the GITT measurements revealed the fast Li + transport for the charge–discharge processes of the hybrids. Such prominent merits of the Ti 0.95 Nb 0.95 O 4 /C hybrid nanotubes make them more likely candidates that can replace graphite and Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anodes in LIBs.

Abstract:Although with a large capacity, TiNb2O7 as an anode material of lithium-ion batteries suffers from a poor rate capability. To solve this challenge, nano-TiNb2O7 and its carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites were prepared by direct hydrolysis of TiNb2O7/CNTs suspension followed by calcination in air and N-2, respectively. The TiNb2O7 nanoparticles in the composites have a Ti2Nb10O29-type crystal structure with O-2 vacancies and lower-valence cations, leading to improved Lithorn-ion diffusion coefficient and increased electronic conductivity in TiNb2O7. The evenly distributed CNTs have good contact with the TiNb2O7 particles, thereby reducing their particle sizes and improving the electrical conduction. As a result of these improvements, the nanocomposites present outstanding electrochemical performances. For example, it delivers a large reversible capacity (346 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C) and a prominent rate capability (still 163 mAh g(-1) at the ultra-large current rate of 30 C). Exceptional cyclic stability is also demonstrated with over 100 cycles at 10 C with large capacity retention of 97.6%. These results reveal that the nano-TiNb2O7/CNTs composites can be a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries of electric vehicles. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Niobium pentoxides (Nb2O5) have attracted extensive interest for ultrafast lithium-ion batteries due to their impressive rate/capacity performance and high safety as intercalation anodes. However, the intrinsic insulating properties and unrevealed mechanisms of complex phases limit their further applications. Here, a facile and efficient method is developed to construct three typical carbon-confined Nb2O5 (TT-Nb2O5@C, T-Nb2O5@C, and H-Nb2O5@C) nanoparticles via a mismatched coordination reaction during the solvothermal process and subsequent controlled heat treatment, and different phase effects are investigated on their lithium storage properties on the basis of both experimental and computational approaches. The thin carbon coating and nanoscale size can endow Nb2O5 with a high surface area, high conductivity, and short diffusion length. As a proof-of-concept application, when employed as LIB anode materials, the resulting T-Nb2O5@C nanoparticles display higher rate capability and better cycling stability as compared with TT-Nb2O5@C and H-Nb2O5@C nanoparticles. Furthermore, a synergistic effect is investigated and demonstrated between fast diffusion pathways and stable hosts in T-Nb2O5 for ultrafast and stable lithium storage, based on crystal structure analysis, in situ X-ray diffraction analysis, and density functional theoretical calculations. Therefore, the proposed synthetic strategy and obtained deep insights will stimulate the development of Nb2O5 for ultrafast and long-life LIBs.

Abstract:Rapid charge and discharge cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries have been commonly researched for the development of electrical mobility applications. Here, an interpenetrating network vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanosheets/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposite was fabricated by a freeze-drying process. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy tests indicated that the CNTs and V2O5 nanosheets form an interpenetrating network structure. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the V2O5 nanosheets exhibit orthorhombic crystal structure and mixed element states in the nanocomposite. The electrochemical properties of the V2O5 nanosheets/CNTs nanocomposite were studied by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The results indicated that the V2O5 nanosheets/CNTs nanocomposite exhibits high specific capacity and good cycling stability. The initial specific capacity of the V2O5 nanosheets/CNTs nanocomposite is 130.7 mA h g(-1) for a current density up to 5.0 A g(-1) and remains at 100.1 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles.

Abstract:A new and generic strategy to construct interwoven carbon nanotube (CNT) branches on various metal oxide nanostructure arrays (exemplified by V2O3 nanoflakes, Co3O4 nanowires, Co3O4-CoTiO3 composite nanotubes, and ZnO microrods), in order to enhance their electrochemical performance, is demonstrated for the first time. In the second part, the V2O3/CNTs core/branch composite arrays as the host for Na+ storage are investigated in detail. This V2O3/CNTs hybrid electrode achieves a reversible charge storage capacity of 612 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and outstanding high-rate cycling stability (a capacity retention of 100% after 6000 cycles at 2 A g(-1), and 70% after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g(-1)). Kinetics analysis reveals that the Na+ storage is a pseudocapacitive dominating process and the CNTs improve the levels of pseudocapacitive energy by providing a conductive network.

Abstract:This work reports the microsphere material (N‐Nb2O5‐x@CNTs) with capillary transport channel and abundant defects (oxygen vacancy and N‐doping), bringing a broad perspective for the rational design and performance modulation in a Li/Na energy storage system. Interestingly, kilogram‐scale microsphere composites can be produced in laboratory conditions by using industrial grade raw materials.As an ion‐embedded material with small strain and low transport energy barrier, the limited ion transport rate and conductivity of niobium pentaoxide (Nb2O5) are the main factors limiting its application in lithium/sodium storage systems. In this work, the microsphere composites (N‐Nb2O5‐x@CNTs) are prepared by combining Nb2O5, rich in nitrogen doping and vacancy defects, with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) penetrating the bulk phase. With the capillary effect, CNTs can enable the rapid electrolyte infiltration into the microspheres, thus shorting the Li+/Na+ transport path. In addition, CNTs also hinder the direct contact between the electrolyte and Nb2O5, and inhibit the irreversible reaction. Meanwhile, nitrogen doping and oxygen vacancy defects reduce the energy barrier of Li+/Na+ transport, and improve their transport rate, proved by density functional theory. Highly conductive CNTs and unpaired electrons from defects also ameliorate the insulation property of Nb2O5. Therefore, N‐Nb2O5‐x@CNTs display good electrochemical performance in both Li/Na half‐cell and Li/Na hybrid capacitors. Interestingly, kilogram‐scale microsphere composites can be produced in laboratory conditions by using industrial grade raw materials, implying its potential for practical application.

3D Carbon Nanotube Network Bridged Hetero‐Structured Ni‐Fe‐S Nanocubes toward High‐Performance Lithium, Sodium, and Potassium Storage

Abstract:Lithium‐ion, sodium‐ion, and potassium‐ion batteries have captured tremendous attention in power supplies for various electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. However, their practical applications are severely limited by factors such as poor rate capability, fast capacity decay, sluggish charge storage dynamics, and low reversibility. Herein, hetero‐structured bimetallic sulfide (NiS/FeS) encapsulated in N‐doped porous carbon cubes interconnected with CNTs (Ni‐Fe‐S‐CNT) are prepared through a convenient co‐precipitation and post‐heat treatment sulfurization technique of the corresponding Prussian‐blue analogue nanocage precursor. This special 3D hierarchical structure can offer a stable interconnect and conductive network and shorten the diffusion path of ions, thereby greatly enhancing the mobility efficiency of alkali (Li, Na, K) ions in electrode materials. The Ni‐Fe‐S‐CNT nanocomposite maintains a charge capacity of 1535 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 for lithium ion batteries, 431 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 for sodium ion batteries, and 181 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 for potassium‐ion batteries, respectively. The high performance is mainly attributed to the 3D hierarchically high‐conductivity network architecture, in which the hetero‐structured FeS/NiS nanocubes provide fast Li+/Na+/K+ insertion/extraction and reduced ion diffusion paths, and the distinctive 3D networks maintain the electrical contact and guarantee the structural integrity.

Abstract:Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) with the advantages of high working potential and negligible volume expansion has been an attractive canditate for lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications. Unfortunately, the intrinsic shortcoming of sluggish electron transportation hinders its widespread application as an effective anode material. Here, we present the successful construction of carbon-coated self-assembled three-dimensional (3D) ultrathin T-Nb2O5 nanosheets (T-Nb2O5@C). The carbon layer and ultrathin nanosheets endow Nb2O5 with high electronic conductivity, prominent structural stability, and short ion-diffusion path, thus significantly improving lithium-ion transportation and storage properties. Consequently, when adopted as a LIB anode, the T-Nb2O5@C nanocomposite demonstrates excellent discharge capacity (231.9 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1) and rate performance (62.0% capacity retention with the current density increasing from 0.1 to 5.0 A g–1). T-Nb2O5@C can also deliver superior cycling stabilities of 97.8 and 94.6% after 200 cycles at 0.2 A g–1 and 1000 cycles at 2 A g–1, respectively. Abstract:Herein, we report on the elaborate synthesis of a novel hybrid architecture, i.e., black tin oxide-black titanium oxide core-shell nanotubes (denoted as TiO2-x@SnO2-x nanotubes) by NaBH4 co-reduction. The synergistic interplay between the SnO2-x core and the TiO2-x shell results in superior cyclability and rate capability for ultrastable and fast lithium storage.

Abstract:Ion transport in solids is a key topic in solid-state ionics. It is critical but challenging to understand the relationship between material structures and ion transport. Nanochannels in crystals provide ion transport pathways, responsible for the fast ion transport in fast lithium (Li)-ion conductors. The controlled synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) provides a promising approach to artificially regulating nanochannels. Herein, the CNTs with a diameter of 5.5 Å are predicted to exhibit an ultralow Li-ion diffusion barrier of about 10 meV, much lower than those in routine solid electrolyte materials. Such a characteristic is attributed to the similar chemical environment of a Li ion during its diffusion based on atomic and electronic structure analyses. The concerted diffusion of Li ions ensures high ionic conductivities of CNTs. These results not only reveal the immense potential of CNTs for fast Li-ion transport but also provide a new understanding for rationally designing solid materials with high ionic conductivities.

Abstract:As a recently developed anode material for lithium-ion batteries, Ti2Nb10O29 shows high theoretical/practical capacities and safety, but suffers from a poor rate capability due to its insulator nature and insufficient Li+-ion diffusion coefficient. To tackle this issue, a strategy combining nanosizing, Cr3+–Nb5+ co-doping and carbon nanotube (CNT) compositing is employed. A novel TiCr0.5Nb10.5O29/CNTs nanocomposite with 9.1 wt% CNTs is fabricated by a direct hydrolysis process followed by calcination in N2. The Cr3+–Nb5+ co-doping significantly improves the electronic conductivity and Li+-ion diffusion coefficient of Ti2Nb10O29 by three orders and one order of magnitude, respectively. The CNT compositing not only enhances the electrical conduction among the TiCr0.5Nb10.5O29 particles but also hinders the particle growth in the hydrolysis process, leading to the small particle sizes. Due to the synergistic effect of these advantages, the TiCr0.5Nb10.5O29/CNTs nanocomposite exhibits a high rate capability with a high capacity of 206 mAh g−1 at 20 C, surpassing those of Ti2Nb10O29 (145 mAh g−1) and TiCr0.5Nb10.5O29 nanoparticles (187 mAh g−1). Additionally, TiCr0.5Nb10.5O29/CNTs delivers a high reversible capacity (297 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C) and cyclic stability (95.0% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 10 C). This good electrochemical performance reveals that TiCr0.5Nb10.5O29/CNTs can be an advanced anode material for high-performance Li+-ion storage.

Abstract:TiNb 2 O 7 (TNO) is regarded as a promising anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries due to its good safety, high theoretical capacity, and good structural stability. However, its application is greatly hindered by its intrinsically poor lithium diffusivity and low conductivity. In this work, N-doped carbon-coated interconnected TNO hollow nanospheres (H-TNO@C) are prepared by a template route followed with carbon coating. Benefiting from the unique hybrid nanoarchitecture, shortened lithium-ion diffusion length, enhanced electronic conductivity, and good structural robustness are obtained by the H-TNO@C electrode. Consequently, the H-TNO@C electrode exhibits a larger specific capacity (271 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C), enhanced rate performance (151 mAh g −1 at 10 C), as well as better cycling durability (91.7% capacity retention after 5000 cycles) than those of the bare TNO particles and the TNO hollow spheres electrodes.
