Abstract:This study reports first-principles predictions as well as experimental synthesis of manganese oxide nanoparticles under different conditions. The theoretical part of the work comprised density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The extensive research efforts and the current challenges in enhancing the performance of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) provided motivation to explore the potential of these materials for use as an anode...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the application potential of manganese dioxide (Mn2O3) and trimanganese tetraoxide (Mn3O4) as anode materials for lithium - ion batteries (LIBs). Specifically, through experimental synthesis and first - principles calculations, the study analyzed the phase - dependent properties and electrochemical performance of these two materials under different conditions. ### Research Background Lithium - ion batteries have become an important choice for energy storage devices due to their high energy density, long lifespan, and good charge - discharge rates. However, existing lithium - ion batteries still face problems such as limited capacity, high cost, and environmental impact. Therefore, developing new and efficient anode materials is one of the current research focuses. In this paper, Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 are selected as research objects because they have a relatively high theoretical capacity and low cost, and are expected to be candidate materials for the next - generation lithium - ion batteries. ### Main Research Contents 1. **Experimental Synthesis and Characterization**: - Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 nanoparticles were prepared under different synthesis conditions, and the samples were structurally characterized using techniques such as X - ray diffraction (XRD). - The results show that Mn3O4 obtained by heating at 450 °C and 550 °C has a tetragonal structure, while Mn2O3 obtained by heating at 650 °C has a cubic structure. 2. **First - Principles Calculations**: - Using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the electronic structures, diffusion behaviors, and lithium - storage capacities of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 were studied. - The calculation results show that the maximum lithium - storage amounts of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 are 1697.66 mAh g\(^{-1}\) and 585.67 mAh g\(^{-1}\), respectively, which are much higher than the theoretical capacity of graphite (372 mAh g\(^{-1}\)). 3. **Electrochemical Performance Evaluation**: - Through MD simulations, the electrochemical behaviors of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 during the lithium - ion insertion process were studied. - The results show that when 10 lithium atoms are inserted into Mn2O3, the lithiation energy remains negative, indicating that this is an exothermic process; while Mn3O4 reaches saturation when 5 lithium atoms are inserted. - The open - circuit voltages (OCV) of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 were calculated to be 0.93 V and 0.22 V, respectively. 4. **Diffusion Coefficient and Transition Energy Barrier**: - Through molecular dynamics simulations, the diffusion coefficients and transition energy barriers of lithium ions in Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 were calculated. - The results show that the diffusion coefficient of Mn2O3 is 2.69 × 10\(^{-9}\) m\(^2\) s\(^{-1}\) at 300 K, and the diffusion coefficient of Mn3O4 is 2.65 × 10\(^{-10}\) m\(^2\) s\(^{-1}\). - The transition energy barriers are 0.30 eV and 0.75 eV, respectively, indicating that Mn2O3 has a lower lithium - ion diffusion energy barrier. ### Conclusion The research shows that Mn2O3 and Mn3O4, as anode materials for lithium - ion batteries, have a relatively high lithium - storage capacity, a lower lithium - ion diffusion energy barrier, and a lower open - circuit voltage. In particular, Mn2O3 exhibits higher comprehensive performance. These characteristics make Mn2O3 a potential anode material for lithium - ion batteries. Future research will further optimize its performance and explore its practical applications.
