Abstract:Fund managers’ style drift behaviour alters fund risks and may have an impact on fund performance that is detrimental to fund investor’s interest. This paper is a first study on the existence and effects of style drift in the fast growing fund management industry in China. It provides a fine-grained analysis of China’s open-end equity funds based on our fund classifications that accurately reflect the true style of each fund whose name, objective, strategy, philosophy and prospectus are all manually analysed for drift detection. Employing a holding-based methodology and using a unique Chinese dataset, we find evidence of style drift in China. The behaviour is found regardless of fund age. We also examine whether style drift is influenced by fund characteristics and investment timeframe. Our findings offer a new approach in addressing the issue of style drift with evidence providing new insights on fund performance evaluation and design of fund managers’ compensation.

Abstract:This paper examines how Chinese mutual funds actively alter the style drift of their top ten holdings in response to past performance in annual tournaments from the three dimensions: size, value, and momentum. Using a sample of equity funds from 2006 to 2023, we find that poorly performing funds in the first three quarters tend to increase their style drift activities in the last quarter. For different dimensions of style drift, we find that simply increasing size drift can improve the performance and ranking of a trailing fund and reduce the risk of the fund's net value crash. The evidence suggests that the intentional shifts in size drift are skilled. In addition, we find the better consequences of size drift change to be particularly pronounced for tournament funds with high activeness.

Abstract:The authors examine the variation in performance for a sample of 770 actively managed mutual funds during the 1993–95 period. They find that not only investment style but also style consistency affects the rate of return. Funds that change both their value versus growth and smallversus large-capitalization stock allocation strategies belong to the worst-performing group. Funds that change only their value versus growth or smallversus large-cap stock orientation do no better than styleconsistent funds. In addition, style-consistent funds are not all alike. Growth/large-cap stock funds are the worstperforming style-consistent funds. Growth/small-cap funds have the biggest rate of return but are also the least diversified.

Abstract:This paper documents that small-cap mutual funds allocate on average 27% of their portfolio to mid- and large-cap stocks. We find that larger and older small-cap funds are more likely to hold mid- and large-cap stocks, consistent with funds straying from their objective over time. Funds that invest heavily in mid- and large-cap stocks expose their investors to unanticipated risks but investors do not experience higher abnormal returns or performance persistence overall. These funds did outperform their peers by 3% annually in the most recent period between January 2003 and March 2010.

On average, funds with lower levels of style volatility significantly outperform more style-volatile funds on a risk-adjusted basis. Abstract:We explore whether style investing by mutual fund investors contributes to return comovement of stocks in the same style, classified by market capitalization and book-to-market ratio. We find that a stock’s comovement with other stocks in its style is significantly greater when this stock is owned by mutual funds that focus on the stock’s style. This increase in comovement is larger for stocks owned in greater proportion relative to their shares outstanding. Flows into or out of a mutual fund style positively affect return comovement; the effect is more pronounced for index funds than for actively managed funds.

Abstract:This study examines the difference in investment style and performance between individual and team-managed mutual funds and the impact of internal mode of the team on investment style and performance using the data of 1030 Chinese mutual funds with a ten-year span from 2003 to 2012.The results suggest no significant difference between individual and team-managed funds in terms of Sharpe ratio,timing and selectivity skill,which is consistent with classical decision-making theory.Strong evidence shows that team-managed stock and hybrid funds have lower risk than individual-managed funds,which is consistent with diversification theory.Team size and team tenure reduce timing skill of hybrid funds.Team tenure brings higher Sharpe ratio to stock funds with higher risk,but lower risk to bond funds,implying accentuation of group tendency.

Abstract:Using a sample of open-end equity mutual funds in China from 2004 to 2017, this study investigates the motivations and consequences of flow-driven fund risk shifting behaviour. We find that funds experiencing large inflows tend to reduce their degree of risk-taking. However, good past performance drives funds with high net flows to increase their risk level. High-performing funds increase risk by increasing turnover, increasing the proportion of equity holdings, and buying more winner stocks. Moreover, risk shifting caused by the flow-driven trades of high-performing funds worsens fund performance in the ensuing two quarters before recovering in the third quarter. Finally, high abnormal flow, high performance sourced from luck, young fund age, and small fund size enhance the risk shifting of high-performing funds when experiencing high flow.

Abstract:This article classifies Chinese mutual funds based on their past investment behavior, using factor and cluster analyses. The empirical results show that the majority of Chinese mutual funds are quasi-indexers (58.58%) which follow a buy-and-hold investment strategy; next are transient mutual funds (31.27%) and dedicated mutual funds (3.38). The results also show that mutual funds generally hold shares of large firms that offer low market risk, low liquidity, and good operating and stock performance. The preferences of quasi-index funds dominate the results. Transient mutual funds focus on good operating performance and growth opportunities. Dedicated funds invest heavily in small, highly liquid listed firms. All types of mutual funds in China prefer to hold state-controlled listed firms rather than privately controlled ones.

Change is Good or the Disposition Effect among Mutual Fund Managers

Abstract:We document that mutual fund managers exhibit the disposition bias, or the tendency to hold on too long to poorly performing stocks. This bias arises because of the psychological unwillingness to admit past mistakes. We show that new fund managers, who are emotionally unattached to their predecessors' decisions, sell the momentum losers they have inherited more readily than continuing fund managers. They also sell more losers than winners, and this difference is higher than for continuing managers. The results are robust to various measures of trade and definitions of the control group. The effects are more pronounced when the outgoing manager is young, perhaps because new managers have less respect for the portfolio decisions of younger predecessors. Given that mutual funds hold a large fraction of the U.S. equity market, this finding may shed light on the origins of price momentum.

Abstract:iFUNDit is an interactive visual analytics system for fund investment style analysis. Itdecomposes a fund's critical features into performance attributes and investment stylefactors, and visualizes them in a set of coupled views: the Fund View and Manager View, todelineate the distribution of funds' and managers' critical attributes on the market; the Cluster view, to show the similarity of investment styles between different funds; and theDetail View, to analyze the evolution of fund investment style. The system provides a holisticoverview of fund data and facilitates streamlined analysis of investment style at both thefund and the manager level. The effectiveness and usability of the system are demonstrated through domain expert interviews and case studies by using a real mutual fund dataset. Mutual funds are becoming increasingly popular with the emergence of Internet finance. Clear profiling of a fund's investment style is crucial for fund managers to evaluate their investment strategies, and for investors to understand their investment. However, it is challenging to profile a fund's investment style as it requires a comprehensive analysis of complex multi‐dimensional temporal data. In addition, different fund managers and investors have different focuses when analysing a fund's investment style. Abstract:In order to solve the problem of investment style drift of open industry theme fund, this paper divides 110 industry theme stocks into ten types based on ITC classification by establishing hierarchical model, constructing judgment matrix, calculating portfolio weight vector and portfolio consistency test. On this basis, combined with the risk weight coefficient of stocks, this paper divides ten types of stocks into three risk levels, and completes the classification of open-end funds based on industry themes and risk levels. Second, this paper defines the fund risk volatility index and the fund steady return index under the new combination, establishes the style drift index using the daily cumulative return rate, and carries on the symbolic processing. The fund style drift control rate is introduced as the judgment basis, and the secondary drift index with only positive and negative properties is taken as the final judgment index. Finally, based on the theory that the total risk value of funds before and after the drift remains stable, combined with the style weight value under nine investment styles, this paper establishes a fund style drift correction model by solving the weight interval of each style after the drift and comparing it with the specific weight before the drift, to realize the correction of the drifting result of funds.

Abstract:We investigate the flow-performance relationship by the lens of the investor preferences, applying a mutual fund dataset with an investment objective focused over European and US area. Incorporating a novel measure of asset managers' market timing ability, we analyze the role played by performance persistence in mutual fund investing decisions by focusing on top performers in a short-time window. Our empirical results showed that preferences strongly influence the returns-flow dynamics when accounting for the asset type, geographical investment focus, and management style tilt, shedding new light on the behavior of certain clustered groups of investors. Furthermore, we find a long-run information effect as a proxy of a positive association between past returns and flows leading by the smart money effect. Surprisingly, we also observe irrational investors' behavior when chasing for negative performers, likely due to a herding effect or flow persistent hypothesis as a result of the mechanisms of market allocation efficiency, which is likely to be affected by a slowdown functioning in the short-term phase. Robustness analyses confirm overall results.

Abstract:This study analyzes four distinct types of mutual fund sentiment timing skills using a multifactor framework. Our results indicate a diminished significance of market sentiment timing, in contrast to the results of prior studies. Additionally, we reveal that size and value sentiment timing can substantially enhance fund performance. Managers strategically reduce their exposure to small stocks using size sentiment timing and increase exposure to value stocks through value sentiment timing during high sentiment periods. We find no evidence that mutual fund managers engage in momentum sentiment timing.

Abstract:Mutual fund investors reward short run performance with large inflows. Fund managers facing strong performance-related flows are shown to focus more on short horizon investments. Further tests of causality suggest that fund manager’s short investment horizons are caused by their investors’ short horizons, but not the other way around. Fund managers subject to severe short-term tend to invest in larger stocks and growth stocks. Controlling for size, book-to-market and momentum effects, the stocks invested by higher turnover fund managers tend to generate lower return going forward, consistent with a hypothesis that these fund managers are inflating the demand for shorter-horizon investment opportunities and neglecting longer-horizon investment opportunities. The portfolio formed based on shorting the high turnover stocks and longing the lowest turnover stocks generates substantial abnormal return during 1992 to 2003.

Abstract:We link a seemingly biased trading behavior to equilibrium asset prices. Mutual fund managers tend to sell both their big winners and big losers. This selling pressure pushes down current prices and leads to higher future returns; aggregating across funds, we find that securities for which investors have large unrealized gains and losses outperform in the subsequent month. Funds with larger turnover, shorter holding period, and higher expense ratios, are significantly more likely to manifest this trading pattern, and unrealized profits from such funds have stronger return predictability. This return predictability is difficult to reconcile with alternative explanations.

Abstract:This study investigates the trading behavior and price effects of mutual fund managers by examining their selling schedules in response to unrealized profits. We present two main findings: first, mutual fund managers tend to sell relatively big winners and big losers – a 1% increase in the magnitude of unrealized gains (losses) is associated with a 1.49% (.63%) higher probability of selling. Second, we link this selling behavior to equilibrium prices by aggregating unrealized profits across funds for each security. Consistent with the relative magnitude of the selling behavior results, we find that a 1% increase in the magnitude of the security-level unrealized gains (losses) predicts a 1.4 (.9) bp increase in future monthly returns. We further explore the link between trading behavior and price effects by examining the cross-sectional heterogeneity of fund characteristics – funds with higher turnover, shorter holding period, and higher expense ratios are significantly more likely to manifest such a trading pattern, and securities held by such funds have stronger return predictability.

Abstract:This paper examines the effect of rapid expansion of the hedge fund industry on mutual fund managerial turnovers. Deuskar et al. (2011) find that mutual funds retain skilled managers by offering side-by-side arrangements. We find that talented fund managers tend to leave mutual funds and establish their own hedge funds when side-by-side arrangements are not feasible. Mutual fund returns and flows decrease if their managers leave mutual funds to establish hedge funds, especially when the hedge fund industry is growing rapidly and performing well. Both institutional and retail investors react to this managerial turnover by reducing net flows. The hedge fund industry has grown rapidly in China. According to the Asset Management Association of China, there are 24,471 hedge fund management companies managing 81,739 individual funds with total assets under management (AUM) of RMB 13.82 trillion in China by the end of 2019.
