Abstract:Taking the generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator (GTHO) and singular time-dependent harmonic oscillator (STHO) as illustrative examples, we discuss the connection between the quantum basic invariants and classical Noether's theorem and, for the system, find: (1) The classical basic invariants and general form of classical invariants. (2) The current algebra and corresponding operator algebra. (3) A kind of converse of the Noether's theorem. (4) The connection between the so-called symmetry algebra ({G(k)} algebra) and the classical current algebra through the operator algebra.

Abstract:The gap between classical mechanics and quantum mechanics has an important interpretive implication: the Universe must have an irreducible fundamental level, which determines the properties of matter at higher levels of organization. We show that the main parameters of any fundamental model must be theory-independent. Moreover, such models must also contain discrete identical entities with constant properties. These conclusions appear to support the work of Kaniadakis on subquantum mechanics. A qualitative analysis is offered to suggest compatibility with relevant phenomena, as well as to propose new means for verification.

Abstract:A recent concept in theoretical physics, motivated in string duality and M-theory, is the notion that not all quantum theories arise from quantising a classical system. Also, a given quantum model may possess more than just one classical limit. In view of these developments, we analyse some general properties that quantum mechanics must satisfy, if it is not to be formulated as a quantisation of a given classical mechanics. Instead, our approach to quantum mechanics is modelled on a statement that is close in spirit to the equivalence principle of general relativity, thus bearing a strong resemblance with the equivalence principle of quantum mechanics formulated by Faraggi-Matone.

From classical to quantum models: the regularising role of integrals, symmetry and probabilities

Abstract:In physics, one is often misled in thinking that the mathematical model of a system is part of or is that system itself. Think of expressions commonly used in physics like "point" particle, motion "on the line", "smooth" observables, wave function, and even "going to infinity", without forgetting perplexing phrases like "classical world" versus "quantum world".... On the other hand, when a mathematical model becomes really inoperative with regard to correct predictions, one is forced to replace it with a new one. It is precisely what happened with the emergence of quantum physics. Classical models were (progressively) superseded by quantum ones through quantization prescriptions. These procedures appear often as ad hoc recipes. In the present paper, well defined quantizations, based on integral calculus and Weyl-Heisenberg symmetry, are described in simple terms through one of the most basic examples of mechanics. Starting from (quasi-) probability distribution(s) on the Euclidean plane viewed as the phase space for the motion of a point particle on the line, i.e., its classical model, we will show how to build corresponding quantum model(s) and associated probabilities (e.g. Husimi) or quasi-probabilities (e.g. Wigner) distributions. We highlight the regularizing role of such procedures with the familiar example of the motion of a particle with a variable mass and submitted to a step potential.

Finite quantum models: constructive approach to description of quantum behavior

Abstract:The universality of quantum mechanics — its applicability to physical systems of quite different nature and scales — indicates that quantum behavior can be a manifestation of general mathematical properties of systems containing indistinguishable elements, i.e., elements lying on the same orbit of some symmetry group. In this paper, we demonstrate that quantum behavior arises naturally in systems with finitely many elements connected by nontrivial symmetry groups. The “finite” approach allows one to see the peculiarities of a quantum description more distinctly without the need for concepts like “wave function collapse,” “Everett’s multiverses,” etc. In particular, under the finiteness assumption, any quantum dynamics is reduced to a simple permutation dynamics. The advantage of finite quantum models is that they can be studied constructively by means of computer algebra and computational group theory methods. Bibliography: 12 titles.

On the Common Logical Structure of Classical and Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:At the onset of quantum mechanics, it was argued that the new theory would entail a rejection of classical logic. The main arguments to support this claim come from the non-commutativity of quantum observables, which allegedly would generate a non-distributive lattice of propositions, and from quantum superpositions, which would entail new rules for quantum disjunctions. While the quantum logic program is not as popular as it once was, a crucial question remains unsettled: what is the relationship between the logical structures of classical and quantum mechanics? In this essay we answer this question by showing that the original arguments promoting quantum logic contain serious flaws, and that quantum theory does satisfy the classical distributivity law once the full meaning of quantum propositions is properly taken into account. Moreover, we show that quantum mechanics can generate a distributive lattice of propositions, which, unlike the one of quantum logic, includes statements about expectation values which are of undoubtable physical interest. Lastly, we show that the lattice of statistical propositions in classical mechanics follows the same structure, yielding an analogue non-commutative sublattice of classical propositions. This fact entails that the purported difference between classical and quantum logic stems from a misconstructed parallel between the two theories.

The Intrinsic Structure of Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:The wave function in quantum mechanics presents an interesting challenge to our understanding of the physical world. In this paper, I show that the wave function can be understood as four intrinsic relations on physical space. My account has three desirable features that the standard account lacks: (1) it does not refer to any abstract mathematical objects, (2) it is free from the usual arbitrary conventions, and (3) it explains why the wave function has its gauge degrees of freedom, something that are usually put into the theory by hand. Hence, this account has implications for debates in philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of science. First, by removing references to mathematical objects, it provides a framework for nominalizing quantum mechanics. Second, by excising superfluous structure such as overall phase, it reveals the intrinsic structure postulated by quantum mechanics. Moreover, it also removes a major obstacle to "wave function realism."

Abstract:Contrary to the widespread belief, the problem of the emergence of classical mechanics from quantum mechanics is still open. In spite of many results on the $\h \to 0$ asymptotics, it is not yet clear how to explain within standard quantum mechanics the classical motion of macroscopic bodies. In this paper we shall analyze special cases of classical behavior in the framework of a precise formulation of quantum mechanics, Bohmian mechanics, which contains in its own structure the possibility of describing real objects in an observer-independent way.

Abstract:Despite the impressive amount of literature on the foundations of quantum mechanics, the relevance of symmetry in interpretation is not properly acknowledged. In fact, although it is usually said that quantum mechanics is invariant under the Galilean group, the invariance is usually not discussed in the case of the interpretation of the theory. This situation is particularly pressing for realist positions, which want to know how reality would be if quantum mechanics were true. From a realist perspective, it seems reasonable to require that an interpretation of quantum mechanics, to be admissible, preserves the same symmetries of the theory. In this paper we will take a realist standpoint in order to study what physical constraints the Galilean group imposes on interpretation, and we will extrapolate the conclusions drawn for quantum mechanics to the case of quantum field theory.

Abstract:We show that quaternion quantum mechanics has well-founded mathematical roots and can be derived from the model of the elastic continuum by French mathematician Augustin Cauchy, i.e., it can be regarded as representing the physical reality of elastic continuum. Starting from the Cauchy theory (classical balance equations for isotropic Cauchy-elastic material) and using the Hamilton quaternion algebra, we present a rigorous derivation of the quaternion form of the non- and relativistic wave equations. The family of the wave equations and the Poisson equation are a straightforward consequence of the quaternion representation of the Cauchy model of the elastic continuum. This is the most general kind of quantum mechanics possessing the same kind of calculus of assertions as conventional quantum mechanics. The problem of the Schrödinger equation, where imaginary ‘i’ should emerge, is solved. This interpretation is a serious attempt to describe the ontology of quantum mechanics, and demonstrates that, besides Bohmian mechanics, the complete ontological interpretations of quantum theory exists. The model can be generalized and falsified. To ensure this theory to be true, we specified problems, allowing exposing its falsity.

Basic structure of a quantum theory for a total system with one internal measuring apparatus

Abstract:We propose a basic structure for a quantum theory for a total system including one internal measuring apparatus. The theory is based on three basic assumptions and one principle. The assumptions are: (i) Physical states of the total system can be associated with vectors in the Hilbert space; (ii) dynamical evolution of a state vector obeys Schr\"{o}dinger equation; and (iii) when some condition is satisfied, pure-vector descriptions of the total system may imply the existence of certain mixed-state descriptions. The principle, termed the principle of compatible description, states that different descriptions for the same state of the total system must give consistent predictions for results of measurements performed by the internal measuring apparatus. The principle imposes a restriction to vectors in the Hilbert space that can be associated with physical states. This restriction to vectors may effectively break the time-reversal symmetry of Schr\"{o}dinger equation and lead to irreversibility of some processes. This irreversibility may shed new light in the old problem of macroscopic irreversibility stated in the second law of thermodynamics.

Abstract:The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics assumes the existence of the classical deterministic Newtonian world. We argue that in fact the Newton determinism in classical world does not hold and in classical mechanics there is fundamental and irreducible randomness. The classical Newtonian trajectory does not have a direct physical meaning since arbitrary real numbers are not observable. There are classical uncertainty relations, i.e. the uncertainty (errors of observation) in the determination of coordinate and momentum is always positive (non zero). A "functional" formulation of classical mechanics was suggested. The fundamental equation of the microscopic dynamics in the functional approach is not the Newton equation but the Liouville equation for the distribution function of the single particle. Solutions of the Liouville equation have the property of delocalization which accounts for irreversibility. The Newton equation in this approach appears as an approximate equation describing the dynamics of the average values of the position and momenta for not too long time intervals. Corrections to the Newton trajectories are computed. An interpretation of quantum mechanics is attempted in which both classical and quantum mechanics contain fundamental randomness. Instead of an ensemble of events one introduces an ensemble of observers.

Abstract:The argument of this article is threefold. First, the article argues that from its rise in the sixteenth century to our own time, the advancement of modern physics as mathematical-experimental science has been defined by the invention of new mathematical structures. Second, the article argues that quantum theory, especially following quantum mechanics, gives this thesis a radically new meaning by virtue of the following two features: on the one hand, quantum phenomena are defined as essentially different from those found in all previous physics by purely physical features; and on the other, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are defined by purely mathematical postulates, which connect them to quantum phenomena strictly in terms of probabilities, without, as in all previous physics, representing or otherwise relating to how these phenomena physically come about. While these two features may appear discordant, if not inconsistent, I argue that they are in accord with each other, at least in certain interpretations (including the one adopted here), designated as "reality without realism", RWR, interpretations. This argument also allows this article to offer a new perspective on a thorny problem of the relationships between continuity and discontinuity in quantum physics. In particular, rather than being concerned only with the discreteness and continuity of quantum objects or phenomena, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory relate their continuous mathematics to the irreducibly discrete quantum phenomena in terms of probabilistic predictions while, at least in RWR interpretations, precluding a representation or even conception of how these phenomena come about. This subject is rarely, if ever, discussed apart from previous work by the present author. It is, however, given a new dimension in this article which introduces, as one of its main contributions, a new principle: the mathematical complexity principle.

Abstract:As shown in our publications, quantum theory based on a finite ring of characteristic p (FQT) is more general than standard quantum theory (SQT) because the latter is a degenerate case of the former in the formal limit p→∞. One of the main differences between SQT and FQT is the following. In SQT, elementary objects are described by irreducible representations (IRs) of a symmetry algebra in which energies are either only positive or only negative and there are no IRs where there are states with different signs of energy. In the first case, objects are called particles, and in the second antiparticles. As a consequence, in SQT it is possible to introduce conserved quantum numbers (electric charge, baryon number, etc.) so that particles and antiparticles differ in the signs of these numbers. However, in FQT, all IRs necessarily contain states with both signs of energy. The symmetry in FQT is higher than the symmetry in SQT because one IR in FQT splits into two IRs in SQT with positive and negative energies at p→∞. Consequently, most fundamental quantum theory will not contain the concepts of particle–antiparticle and additive quantum numbers. These concepts are only good approximations at present since at this stage of the universe the value p is very large but it was not so large at earlier stages. The above properties of IRs in SQT and FQT have been discussed in our publications with detailed technical proofs. The purpose of this paper is to consider models where these properties can be derived in a much simpler way.

The system with discrete interactions I: Some comments about the principles of quantum theory

Abstract:The model of the physical system with discrete interactions is based on the postulates that (i) parameters of the physical system are defined in process of its interaction; (ii) the process of interaction is discrete. Consequently ordering of the events in the system is not automatically implied based on the values of time, but must be specified explicitly. This suggests the specific logic of events as well as complex character of the function, which describes stochastic behavior of the system, hence the parameters of the system are defined by Hermitian operators in the Hilbert space of functions. The model gives an essential way to introduce the basic notions and obtain the results of the quantum theory, to derive the meaning of the main physical parameters, such as momentum or electric charge. Based on the proposed postulates, Schrodinger equation for the particle is deduced in a way similar to inferring of Smoluchowski equation in the classical statistical mechanics. Similarly, the equations of motion of linear fields are established by considering Smoluchowski-type equations for amplitudes of harmonics. The concept of discrete interaction gives a way to de-couple the object of experiment and a testing device (the traditional source of controversy in quantum theory), though at expense of limitation of the principle of locality.

Abstract:It is shown with the help of skew-symmetric forms that the mathematical physics equations, on which no additional conditions are imposed, have quantum properties. And this is due to the integrability properties of differential equations, which depends on the consistency of derivatives with respect to different variables and the consistency of equations, if the mathematical physics equations are a system of equations. It was found that such equations on the original tangent space turn out to be non-integrable. Their derivatives do not form a differential. The integrability of such equations is realized only on the structures of a cotangent integrable manifold. This happens using a degenerate, non-differential-preserving transformation that has quantum properties. When implementing degenerate transformations, mini structures (quanta) arise, from which integrable structures are formed. Such properties of integrability of mathematical physics equations and features of degenerate transformations reveal the quantum properties of mathematical physics equations and their ability to generate quantum structures.

Abstract:This article is the second in a series of two presenting the Scale Relativistic approach to non-differentiability in mechanics and its relation to quantum mechanics. Here, we show Schroedinger's equation to be a reformulation of Newton's fundamental relation of dynamics as generalized to non-differentiable geometries in the first paper \cite{paper1}. It motivates an alternative interpretation of the other axioms of standard quantum mechanics in a coherent picture. This exercise validates the Scale Relativistic approach and, at the same time, it allows to identify macroscopic chaotic systems considered at time scales exceeding their horizon of predictability as candidates in which to search for quantum-like structuring or behavior.
