Abstract:<span>During the first decades of the nineteenth century, the busy north-western Spanish commercial port of Corunna became the stage for a series of memorialization strategies focusing on an exceptional group of military heroes who died in the area or whose mortal remains were buried there. In a city notable for being a bastion of Liberal political ideas, actions taken to preserve the collective memory of military figures—such as the Scottish general John Moore, an ally of the Spanish during the Peninsular War, or Spanish officers such as Porlier, Acevedo, and Espoz y Mina, who were responsible for various uprisings against King Ferdinand VII—necessarily led to the construction of provisional or permanent tombs to house their mortal remains. Considered martyrs and heroes fallen in defense of liberty, the political glorification of these figures tied in with the romantic sensibility to produce a varied set of funerary memorials and, above all, the creation of sites of memory that made this maritime city a forerunner to the national pantheon coveted by Spanish <i>liberales</i> as a means of legitimizing their political ideals.</span>

Abstract:The so-called Castelo Mourisco provides an accurate model of the elevated function of architecture. It is all the more interesting because it is the headquarters of an internationally-renowned institute of biomedical sciences, and its meticulous design reveals the humanist ideals of Oswaldo Cruz, its founder. Only through a faultless alliance between founder and designer can architectural creations like this one arise; it transcends the limits of construction to symbolize the fusion of science, history and art. Analysis of the various stylistic resources used in the building justifies their selection and continued relevance, since for a century it has not only occupied the heart of the Manguinhos campus, but also continued to express the modern spirit of the institution it harbors.
Architecture and cinema in Valladolid. Strategy for the protection and management of modern cultural heritage

Abstract:Architectural and audiovisual heritage are two extremely important cultural resources in the region of Castilla y León and, specifically in its capital, the city of Valladolid. The Recognized Research Group of Architecture and Cinema of the University of Valladolid (GIRAC), the Iberian DO.CO.MO.MO Foundation, the City Council of Valladolid and the Valladolid Film Office (VAFO) have developed several initiatives to highlight and re-late both fields of knowledge. The cultural and economic value of this relationship has been reinforced through a process of municipal protection of the architectural heritage of the Modern Movement of Valladolid. This article explains the creation of a strategy for the economic development of this heritage used as film sets for audio-visual production.

Abstract:Artistic representations of the Carlist wars waned as the movement relinquished its political and discursive agency. In our present century, however, neo-historical painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau has reconfigured the aesthetic parameters of Spanish legitimism, while reallocating its ideological and cultural signifiers. This article explores how the resurgence of Carlist military imagery serves as a nostalgic repository of an imagined historical trajectory challenging contemporary political discursive practices. It also examines the visual texts’ function as a reaffirmation of Traditionalism’s unionist identity, decoupled from the legacy of Francoism, and as a contemplative lamentation of a vanishing cultural value system.

Abstract:This article describes the presence of cultural traits of Basque tradition in the visual arts and Uruguayan literature of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Likewise, the research deconstructs the concept of “cultural legacy” applied in studies regarding multiculturalism in Uruguay. This approach implied a type of degradation at a cultural level, in which successive generations (first, second, third, and fourth) gradually lost their “original culture”. However, the cultural traits of the Basque ethnic group that appear in the visual arts and literature were shaped by the descendants of the first and second generations. The research demonstrates that certain cultural manifestations can re-emerge among the pieces created by the descendants of the second, third or fourth generation, rather than by the generation that arrived in the country for the first time. On the whole, the article analyses the continuum of the cultural legacy of Basque immigration in Uruguay from an anthropological point of view. As a result, the work presents a non-linear approach to the cultural contribution of Basque immigrants in this country.

Abstract:Geomorphology is the link between natural and cultural heritage, so the geomorphological map is a useful tool for inventorying landforms and its management. In this paper, a Castro de Ulaca geomorphological map at 1:20,000 scale has been designed, focused on granite landforms and based on bibliographical and cartographic review followed by systematic field work in the Ulaca site and around. It shows a mastery of granite landforms and their relationship with cultural elements, as well as the adaptation of the society to the geomorphological conditions. The twelve granite landforms represented are not relevant in a national or regional scale, but they are of local importance as they represent the links between geomorphology and the archaeological elements present in Ulaca. It is essential to incorporate geomorphological elements in the management of cultural spaces, to guarantee their protection from visitors, as well as to ensure the survival and use of this cultural service for local population.

Abstract:The Virgin of the Rosary of Santibañez of the mountain range of Salamanca is a devotional sculpture with historical interest in the cultural evolution of the village. With a Ghotic origin, it was modified substantially in Hispano-Flemish style and modified later to Baroque style during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. The artistic study of the sculp-ture has been based on scientific analysis prior to the restoration because the work is un-derstood as an integral continuum to ensure the best interpretation and conservation of the piece. The restoration of the work has taken into account the materiality of the object, as a primary source for history and art, and the immaterial value, an aspect that is not usually considered and which is the starting point for the application of the criterion of correspondence of polychromes for the conservation of their religious value.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, the recuperation of Spanish authors in the development of Modernist fiction in a pan-European context has gained increasing momentum among scholars. Extending the scope of these critical studies, this article presents a comparative analysis of cross-cultural encounters and ironic journeys of development in Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim (1900) and Pío Baroja's César o nada (1910). The study addresses three key strands: the question of direct influence; the thwarted search for self-definition set against the competing perceptions of multiple fictional observers; and finally the failed heroism of each protagonist which, I propose, symbolically references a scepticism towards European narratives of progress. The comparison of two authors (one Spanish; one Polish émigré) identifies resonant parallels between their fictional works and seeks to reframe Baroja and Conrad as literary counterparts across national borders in turn-of-the-century Spain and Britain.

Abstract:The Romanesque churches dotted along the Way of Saint James are magnificent examples of cultural heritage, and their analysis from the perspective of cultural astronomy may, in an unobtrusive manner, provide information of hitherto unexplored facets of these treasures. This study aims to examine the pilgrimage road as a communication channel and to seek possible regional variations in the Christian kingdoms of Leon, Castile, Navarre and Aragon. Seen as a whole, the Romanesque churches of our sample present two main orientation patterns: towards either the ecclesiastical and astronomical equinox or to certain Easter Sunday celestial phenomena. However, equinoctial orientations are present only in Leon and Navarre, while Easter appears with more or less significance in every kingdom. The Camino de Santiago constitutes a sacred landscape with a common heritage, with a certain degree of cultural diversity that depends on the territory. These subtle differences have surfaced only in light of archaeoastronomical investigations.

Abstract:Dear colleagues and friends of the Latin American Foot and Ankle world, it is for me an honor and at the same time a great sadness to pass along the sad news that January brought to all of us. Ramón Viladot-Pericé, world reference in Foot and Ankle and professor of generations of specialists in Spain and Latin America, passed away in Barcelona. Providence wanted that, in the last months and even years, we had been united by an intense research activity, and I have the honor of having published with him his last scientific article, published last year in this scientific journal.What can we say... we have plenty of reasons to highlight his impressive scientific legacy and even more reasons to stress his unmeasurable human qualities. His absence leaves an enormous void impossible to fill. From the scientific point of view, his last moments were filled with an unprecedented resurgence of science in all senses: it was not time to end a project to start another, and the hours and days were not enough to meet his goals. Perhaps he never thought of such a hastyend, but even so, destiny prepared him to say goodbye in the best way: communicating how much he knew about Foot and Ankle. Among many other things, I am left with the calls of the last months, full of affection and cognizance of the perfection of his work, but also with his inexhaustible eagerness for rigorous scientific production. With Ramón Viladot part of the History of Foot and Ankle is gone. Probably nothing will be the same from now on, but we are left withhis unequaled personal and scientific legacy, his disposition, his human qualities. Surely many of the readers of this Editorial can identify with these words, as there are many of us who have shared operations and consultations with him both at the Hospital San Rafael and at the Clínica Tres Torres in Barcelona.The person died, but the memory lives on. Abstract:The point of departure for this article is the small wooden chest that the Countess of Empúries, Maria Álvarez de Xèrica (c. 1310-1374), commissioned to hold the instructions for the annual commemorations of her death. I address the wills, tomb, death, funeral rites, and anniversary celebrations of the countess as a grand performance, a work deployed over space and time. In addition, I focus on the agency of the memory containers: chests, tomb, boxes. The aim of this exploration of the acts, desires, objects, and people that made up this performance is to understand them not only in and of themselves, but as parts of a network. The study reveals the potential of such a network to construct memory by forging a constellation of nodes of objects but also of family ties, and political and social consciousness.
Architecture, urban planning and collective identity: Bilbao as a case study

Abstract:The emergence of a collective identity, a complex social and psychological process, may be linked to a specific place and a particular urban layout. Architecture demarcates interior and exterior spaces that not only frame our relationships but can also generate a mirror image of the internal world. The authors examine relevant contributions from the sparse psychoanalytic literature on this subject, to support their hypothesis that changes to a city's landscape, design, or architecture, when wholeheartedly embraced by its citizens, can serve to forge a new collective identity that helps to deal with absence, pain, and loss. They present the city of Bilbao, Spain, as a case study. This once thriving industrial city had collapsed into economic ruin, rife with social conflict, but since the 1990s, in an urban renewal, has emerged as a unique tourist destination. It has become a modern art and cultural center, symbolized by its most famous piece of contemporary architecture.

Abstract:Galician Almanac in Buenos Aires [Almanaque Gallego de Buenos Aires] (1898–1927), founded and directed by Manuel Castro López, consists of a true collection of Galician knowledge made up of numerous works of historical and literary research by intellectuals and writers from both sides of the Atlantic. In its pages there are plenty of references to two contemporary fellow writers who have attracted our attention and become the subject of this brief study: Avelina Valladares and Rosalía de Castro. This paper examines the differences and proximities in the representation of women writers as highlighted by the magazine around these authors, considering that they are misadjusted characters in terms of the behavior standards of their time. In this sense, our study analyses how the Almanac... retrieves an imagery of the origins around the Galician emigrates, by pointing out that both Rosalia de Castro and Avelina Valladares took part in the setting of new literary and political standards. By this, the Almanac builds upon these women the sense of a new beginning for Galician emigrates in America.

Abstract:Las fotografías tomadas por Antoni Campañà (1906-1989) durante la Guerra Civil española estuvieron ocultas durante más de ochenta años hasta su descubrimiento en otoño de 2018. Este importantísimo hallazgo aporta una nueva mirada a la Barcelona en guerra y revolución ofreciendo material fotográfico complementario y desconocido de sucesos de gran importancia histórica como “la Desbandá” andaluza de 1937, las protestas por la escasez alimentaria o los efectos de los bombardeos nacionales, así como retratos inéditos de los milicianos anarquistas o de figuras como Joan García Oliver. De los más de 5000 negativos de guerra inéditos descubiertos, en este trabajo analizamos diez fotografías representativas del autor, su estilo y la época que retrata.

Abstract:Ampliando el conocimiento del polifacetismo de Joaquim M. Bartrina, se estudian diversos trabajos o proyectos suyos sobre Cervantes, en especial su contribución al inventario de la presencia del Quijote en el teatro, y las referencias a esta novela en su producción literaria (una epístola poética imitando el poema de Urganda la Desconocida al Quijote, tres pensamientos en verso o prosa y una narración invirtiendo los estereotipos sociales de don Quijote y Sancho, desarrollada por Josep Miró i Folguera). Bartrina, manteniendo la adscripción romántica del primer personaje al ideal y del segundo a la realidad, pero desde una óptica positivista, concluye que ambos representan dos aspectos del hombre.
Lola Álvarez Bravo: Subverting Surrealist Photography in Mexico

Abstract:Rather than merely draw inspiration from Surrealism, I argue that Mexican photographer Lola Álvarez Bravo actually subverts some of its founding tenets and iconography. Though archived letters documenting the turbulent relationship with her former husband Manuel Álvarez Bravo, I contend that empirical experience incited her to deconstruct the male anatomy similarly to the surrealist treatment of the female body, photographically subverting surrealist iconography from within. I consider how Lola's staunchly Catholic religious beliefs impacted upon her feminist stance and how she navigated the female iconography of the Catholic faith in a Surrealist manner. Subsequently, I chart how Lola's photography reversed stereotypical gender roles in a post-revolutionary society, repurposing the surrealist penchant for the mannequin in the service of feminism. Lola's practice corresponds to a form of intersectional feminism, whereby her own battles concurrently engender sympathy for other marginalized communities such as the poor and the indigenous. Nevertheless, due to her reliance upon government commissions, her photographic repertoire does sometimes stray into propaganda despite her ardent denials thereof; Manuel clearly had more artistic freedom compared to Lola. Lola's subversion of surrealism is underpinned by the dichotomy of the generalized and concrete other, elaborated by feminist-cosmopolitan philosopher Seyla Benhabib.
