Abstract:CO selective catalytic reduction (CO‐SCR), a promising technology for simultaneous removal of harmful CO and NO in exhaust gases, has attracted much attention in recent years. Pt‐based catalysts have been demonstrated to be effective for this reaction. However, it remains a big challenge to achieve a high low‐temperature activity at a low Pt loading. Here we report a new catalyst consisting of subnanometric Pt on Cu nanoparticles confined in the NaOH‐modified Y‐zeolite (Pt‐Cu@M‐Y). This catalyst possesses much‐enhanced catalytic property in CO‐SCR at an extremely low Pt content of 0.04 wt% in the catalyst, achieving full NO conversion at 250 °C. The Pt‐Cu@M‐Y catalyst was synthesized using a simple impregnation method followed by a hydrogen reduction. Transmission electron microscopy study revealed that Pt‐Cu@M‐Y with subnanometric Pt on Cu nanoparticle of ~5 nm was highly dispersed in M‐Y. The superior catalytic property of Pt‐Cu@M‐Y is attributed to the synergistic catalysis of Pt and Cu, in which subnanometric Pt species contributes to the strong adsorption of NO, while the dissociation of NO and the migration of dissociated O atoms are significantly boosted on the newly generated interfaces between Cu nanoparticles and the formed surface CuO x species. This work develops an effective method for synthesizing bimetallic nanoparticles confined in zeolite and demonstrates their superior catalytic performance in the catalytic reduction of NO x by CO.

Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction of NOxby CO (CO-SCR) to both N2 and CO2 is a promising way to simultaneously remove two harmful gases, CO and NOx, in automobile and factory exhaust gases. The development of efficient catalysts is the key challenge for the technology to be commercialized. The low-cost Cu-based catalysts have shown promising performance in CO-SCR, but there are some technical problems that obstruct their practical implementation, such as high reduction temperature and low O2, H2O, and SO2 resistance. This paper provides a comprehensive overview and insights into CO-SCR under O2-containing conditions over the Cu-based catalysts, including catalytic performances of non-supported, supported mono-metallic, supported bimetallic, and supported multi-metallic Cu-based catalysts. In addition, the effects of O2 concentration, reaction temperature, H2O, and SO2 on the catalytic performance are discussed. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of CO-SCR on Cu-based catalysts is briefly summarized. Lastly, challenges and perspectives with respect to this reaction are discussed. We hope this work can provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of efficient Cu-based catalysts in the CO-SCR reaction for commercial applications.

Abstract:A series of CuxFeMg4-x-LDO and Cu/FeMg2.8-LDO catalysts were prepared by calcination of CuFeMg layered double hydroxide (LDH) for CO-SCR reaction. The Cu1.2FeMg2.8-LDO catalyst exhibited the highest CO-SCR activity and the NO conversion reach 100 % at 225–600 °C with a space velocity of 60000 mL·g−1·h−1. The CuxFeMg4-x-LDO composite metal oxide generated by topotactic transformation not only promotes the dispersion of CuO species but also promotes the generation of CuzMg1-zFe2O4 spinel phase and the reactive oxygen species (Cu2+-O-Cu2+ and Cu2+-O-Fe3+). Moreover, it also has the high H2 consumption and more surface adsorbed oxygen, which can significantly improve the redox capacity of the catalysts. The appearance of Cu+–CO/Fe2+–CO species and the relatively low activation energy are also responsible for the better catalytic activity of Cu1.2FeMg2.8-LDO at low temperatures. Furthermore, for the CO-SCR reaction over Cu1.2FeMg2.8-LDO catalysts, the L-H mechanism is consistent at low temperatures and the E-R mechanism at high temperatures. This work offers insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for the low temperature CO-SCR reaction.

Abstract:A type of novel copper-based catalysts supported on MIL-125(Ti), a kind of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), noted as Cu-MIL-125(Ti), was synthesized for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with CO. The reactivity of Cu-MIL-125 catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO (SCR-CO) was evaluated in a fixed bed reactor. A number of characterization techniques were used to explore the basic physical–chemical properties and the reaction mechanism. The results showed that the large specific surface area and micro-mesopores of the MIL-125 carrier promoted the high dispersion of Cu species, leading to the outstanding SCR-CO performance. Among the results, 90 % NO conversion and 92 % N 2 selectivity were proved for the 6.2Cu-MIL-125 catalyst at 325 °C in oxygen-rich environment. XRD results showed that the metal organic frame structure and TiO 2 structure coexisted in the catalysts, which was the major factor to influence the NO reduction efficiency. XPS characterization and H 2 -TPR reduction results showed that the catalytic performance of the catalyst was mainly determined by the path of Cu 2+ reduction to Cu + and then Cu + to Cu 0 . Lewis acid on the catalyst surface played an important role in the CO-SCR reaction. In situ DRIFTS study proved that NO was first adsorbed on the surface of the catalyst to form different nitrate, NCO and isocyanate species. Then the adsorbed NO and the intermediates reacted with gaseous CO, which is a typical interaction between adsorbed molecules and gas molecules. Oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface was involved in the reaction of CO to CO 2 . The whole reaction follows the M–K mechanism and the E-R mechanism. A preliminary reaction pathway was proposed based on the in situ DRIFTS results.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction of NO with CO (CO-SCR) is a promising strategy to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) from motor vehicle exhaust and industrial flue gases (from sintering, coking, and so on). As one of the transition metals, copper-based catalysts have been extensively studied for NO reduction with CO. At present, composite oxides (Cu–CeOx, Cu–MnOx, etc.,), supported Cu based catalysts (Cu/Ce-MnOx, Cu/Ce-FeOx, etc.,), nanomaterials (nano-hollow spinel, nanosheets, etc.,), and Cu-based catalysts derived from MOFs and LDHs exhibited the most superior performance with NO conversion generally reaching above 90% around 200 °C. In this study, some optimization strategies were proposed in designing catalysts with high catalytic activity, such as selecting supports with superior performance, using LDHs and MOFs precursors, optimizing morphology and crystal plane, metals doping, and reduction pretreatment. In the reaction pathway, NO dissociation is considered to be the key step for NO + CO reaction. Also, copper valence state, surface oxygen vacancies (SOVs), and surface synergistic oxygen vacancies (SSOVs) play a critical role in NO reduction with CO. Moreover, anti-inactivation measures in the presence of H2O, SO2, and O2 were proposed. Based on the above discussion, some suggestions were proposed for future research work that efforts should be made. Hopefully, valuable information can be provided in this review for realizing the industrial application of CO-SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are promising for the selective catalytic reduction of NO x by CO (CO-SCR), but some technical issues hinder their practical application, including the high Pt loading needed, high reduction temperature, and the low tolerance toward SO2. Here, we report a novel Pt catalyst for CO-SCR, which has negatively charged single-atom Pt embedded on CuO squares, and the latter is supported on CoAlO nanosheets. This Pt–CuO/CoAlO catalyst with an ultra-low Pt loading (0.02 wt %) exhibited 91% NO conversion and 80% N2 selectivity in 3% O2 at 200 °C. More importantly, it showed almost no activity loss in 200 ppm SO2 over a 15 h test. The theoretical calculations reveal that the negatively charged Pt has a stronger NO adsorption ability than the positively charged Pt, and Cu serves as the CO adsorption site. The much-weakened SO2 adsorption on Pt–CuO/CoAlO relative to the NO and CO adsorption effectively avoids the catalyst poisoning by SO2.

Abstract:Transition metal-based nanomaterials have gained significant attention as highly active and cost-effective catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with CO. Using a simple wet impregnation method, the catalyst composition and active sites can be modulated. In this paper, we present a novel cerium-based co-solvent catalyst, A-site doped ACu-CeO 2 (A = Co, Fe, Mn), for CO-SCR of NO. The doping of A-site elements induces structural changes and enhances catalytic performance. Among the doped catalysts, CoCu-CeO 2 exhibits a wide temperature window for operation and high selectivity towards nitrogen, achieving 100% NO conversion at 200 °C. Furthermore, A-site modulation not only promotes electron/ion transfer within the catalyst but also enables uniform and dispersed distribution of the active metal species, particularly copper, in the CoCu-CeO 2 catalyst. This provides reaction centers for the selective reduction of NO by CO and enhances the adsorption capacity of the catalyst for NO. The ACu-CeO 2 catalyst demonstrates excellent CO-SCR catalytic performance and resistance to vapor. Characterization techniques such as XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and in situ DRIFTS elucidate the reaction mechanism of the ACu-CeO 2 cerium-based co-solvate in the CO-SCR reaction. This study furthers our understanding and improvement of catalyst design, while also providing an efficient and straightforward denitrification catalyst for controlling air pollutants.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO (CO-SCR) is a promising technology to simultaneously eliminate the harmful NO and CO. Particularly, low-cost and efficient catalysts for CO-SCR are in high demand for industrial applications. Transition metal-based catalysts (TMCs) are highly effective for CO-SCR, as reported over the past decade. This review aims to explore the latest advancements of TMCs in the CO-SCR reaction, focusing on Fe-, Cu-, Mn-, and Co-based catalysts. By combining the theoretical calculation and experimental results, we discuss the structure-performance relationships between TMCs and CO-SCR, the reaction pathways on various catalysts, and the impact of various implementation factors, such as O 2 , H 2 O, and SO 2 concentrations, along with the catalyst design strategies. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of TMCs for CO-SCR reaction are predicted and discussed.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO is a promising technology for the simultaneous removal of both NO and CO pollution. Hence, a series of CuMgFe composite metal oxides with flower-like morphology was prepared by co-precipitation method for SCR of NO by CO. CuMgFe oxide calcined at 500 °C (CuMgFe-500) exhibited excellent low temperature activity. NO conversion reaches 100% at 225 °C, and it exhibits superior anti-H2O/SO2 ability (250 °C). The excellent activity of CuMgFe-500 was associated with its abundance of surface oxygen vacancies and excellent redox performance. The reaction mechanism of CuMgFe-500 CO catalytic reduction of NO was investigated by in situ DRIFTS. The results show that monodentate nitrate and labile carbonate intermediate species are generated on the catalyst surface. Its reaction follows the E-R mechanism and the L-H mechanism. The introduction of K reduced the surface oxygen adsorption and redox properties of CuMgFe-500 catalyst, which were the main reason for the poor low-temperature activity of K-poisoned catalyst. In situ DRIFTS analysis showed that SO2 hardly inhibits NO adsorption, which were the main reason for the excellent sulfur resistance of CuMgFe-500. This work provides new insights into the development and design of low-temperature CO-SCR catalysts.

Abstract:One kind of driving of Cu on α-Fe2O3 was successfully created for removing NO x . It brought excellent low-temperature performance, high N2 selectivity and strong water and sulfur resistance. The concrete process was that Cu2+ ions entered into the crystal lattice of Fe2O3, forming solid solution with Cu-O-Fe structure and further changed the property of Fe2O3. On the one hand, Cu2+ ions adjusted the electrophilicity of Fe3+ species, thereby facilitating the generation and adsorption of NO2, nitrate and nitrite species and increasing Lewis acid sites. The increase of NH3 and NO x adsorbed species on the catalyst surface conduced to excellent low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. On the other hand, the regulation of Cu brought abundant lattice defects to Fe2O3 which strengthened the redox ability and generated oxygen vacancy. It led to the growth of surface adsorbed oxygen, which was crucial for the “fast SCR” reaction. In-situ DRIFTS results revealed that the NH3 on Lewis acid sites preferred to react with weakly adsorbed NO2 through Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism over the Fe-Cu composite oxide catalyst. Meanwhile, the NH3 on Lewis acid sites was also able to react with monodentate nitrates, bidentate nitrates and nitrites through L-H reaction mechanism. This work provided a new inspiration for the construction of green and efficient catalysts to remove NO x in the practical industrial applications.

Abstract:The simultaneous removal of CO and NO x in the sintering flue gas over a single catalyst is desirable but challenging. Herein, 2 %V 2 O 5 –5 %CuO/TiO 2 bifunctional catalysts that efficiently catalyzed CO and NO x at low temperatures were reported, with CO and NO x conversions of 100 % at 200–300 °C. The synergistic effect between copper and vanadium oxides enhanced the redox and CO adsorption capacities of 2 %V 2 O 5 –5 %CuO/TiO 2 , rendering it abundant acid sites and surface chemisorbed oxygen. The in situ DRIFTS experiments demonstrated that CO oxidation over the dual-active-sites 2 %V 2 O 5 –5 %CuO/TiO 2 catalyst follows the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, while the E-R mechanism was the primary NH 3 -SCR pathway. Due to the presence of dual-active-sites (i.e., separated of the V active sites for the NH 3 -SCR reaction and the Cu active sites for CO oxidation), the competition adsorption of CO and NH 3 on the Cu sites was weakened, resulting in higher CO oxidation performance than the single-active-site catalysts. This work provided insights into the control of flue gas containing CO and NO x over a single catalyst.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the fabrication of cobalt-doped de-NOx catalyst by pyrolyzing an analogous metal-organic framework-74 (MOF-74) containing Fe & Mn. The resulted catalyst exhibits distinctive microstructures of manganese, cobalt, and iron immobilized on N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs). It is found through experiments that the trimetallic catalyst Fe2Mn1Co0.5/CNTs-50 has the best NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) performance. The Fe2Mn1Co0.5/CNTs-50 exhibited excellent water and sulfur resistance and good stability under the harsh gas environment of 250 °C and/or 170 °C, NO = NH3 = 1,000 ppm, 8 vol.% O2, 20 vol.% H2O, 1,000 ppm SO2, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) = 75,000 h−1. The de-NOx conversion was maintained about 55% and 25% after 192 h. The water and sulfur resistance performance were much higher than commercial vanadium series catalyst. The highly water and sulfur resistance performance may be attributed to the unique core-shell microstructure and the synergistic effect of manganese, cobalt, and iron which helps reduce the formation for byproducts (NH4HSO4). This study may promote to explore the development of a high stability catalyst for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3.

Abstract:The influence of the chemical state of Cu species in spinel-type catalysts on the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with CO has not been well understood. A series of CuM 2 O 4 (M = Co, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Cr) were synthesized and studied in this work. Notably, CuCo 2 O 4 demonstrated the best CO-SCR performance, exhibiting the de-NO x activity exceeding 90 % in a broad temperature window of 143–381 °C. Furthermore, CO conversion surpassed 90 % above 225 °C. Characterizations revealed that the synergy between Cu 2+ and surface oxygen vacancy in the Cu 2+ –O v –M δ+ sites (δ represents the M cations in the lower valence states) played a vital role in enhancing the CO-SCR performance of the CuM 2 O 4 catalysts. The superior CO-SCR performance of CuCo 2 O 4 was also attributed to the optimal interplay between Cu and Co cations, resulting in superior Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycle and improved lattice oxygen mobility. In situ DRIFTS verified that Cu 2+ was the primary site during the CO-SCR reaction, and two possible mechanisms (oxygen vacancy-assisted and lattice oxygen-assisted routes) over CuM 2 O 4 were carefully proposed. This study unravels the nature of the CO-SCR activity of the CuM 2 O 4 catalysts and provides novel perspectives on the development of Cu-based catalysts for CO-SCR applications.

Abstract:Hollow spherical LaCu0.5Fe0.5O3 (LCF) and La0.8Ce0.1Cu0.5Fe0.5O3 (LCCF) catalysts are synthesized by solvothermal method, and CuO is reduced in two samples, so that the two corresponding multiphase catalysts (R-LCF and R-LCCF) were prepared and used for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with CO (CO-SCR). The results show that the balance of Ce3++Cu2+↔Cu++Ce4+ between Ce and Cu ions promotes the reduction of CuO in the Ce-doped LCCF catalyst more obviously. In addition, the reduction of Ce and Cu in R-LCCF generates more oxygen vacancies, which leads to more surface adsorbed oxygen species, thus facilitating the conversion of more NO to NOx species. Besides, the presence of reduced Cu is highly active and can inhibit the production of carbonates occupying the active site. The ability to activate both CO and NO after the evolution of Cu0 to the key species Cu+ leads to a rapid reaction between Cu+-CO and NOx species. These are the key factors for the significant increase in catalytic activity at low temperatures. It is worth noting that the CO-SCR reaction on the R-LCCF catalyst corresponds to the Langmuir-Hinshlwood (L-H) and Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanisms at different temperature windows, respectively.

Abstract:Low temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx (mainly NO and NO2) with CO technology (CO-SCR) is deemed to be a valid and economical solution for NOx abatement in the flue gas. (2NO + 2CO → N2 + 2CO2, 2NO2 + 4CO→N2+4CO2). As a burgeoning class of porous hybrid inorganic-organic crystals, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent great application prospects in the area of catalysis, whereas they were employed in CO-SCR system are scarcely reported. In this work, Cu-BTC and Ce-Cu-BTC catalysts with octahedron shape were synthesized by solvothermal method. The catalytic properties were assessed for selective catalytic reduction of NO with CO (CO-SCR). TGA, XRD, SEM, FT-IR, XPS as well as in situ DRIFTS technologies, are performed to examine the physical and chemical properties of samples. The results demonstrated that the adsorption forms of NO on the catalysts are monodentate nitrites, chelating bidentate nitrates, bridging bidentate nitrates, trans-N2O22− and NO− species. Whereas the adsorption forms of CO are hydrogen carbonate, carbonate species and carbonyl. They all act as intermediates to generate N2 and CO2. The possible reaction mechanism about CO-SCR is discussed.

Abstract:The simultaneous reaction of CO oxidation and selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) is of great challenge in heterogeneous catalysis, especially at low temperatures, and the interaction between these two reactions is not clear. In this work, a series of α-MnO2-M (M=Fe, Co, Ce, Cu) nanorod catalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The α-MnO2-Cu nanorod catalyst showed the highest catalytic performance with over 85% NOx and CO removal efficiency from 150 to 250°C. The addition of Cu specie increased the redox ability, total oxygen storage, surface acidic sites and total CO adsorption capacity, which should be responsible for the enhanced SCR and CO oxidation activity of the α-MnO2-Cu nanorod catalyst. The interaction of CO oxidation and SCR reaction has been investigated over α-MnO2-Cu nanorod catalyst. The CO reduced the NO adsorption, which further inhibited the L-H mechanism, reduced the SCR activity and narrowed the temperature window, especially the reduction of N2 selectivity. The NH3 negatively affected CO oxidation by reducing the generation of the Mn-COO formate intermediate, while the NO promoted CO oxidation through the decomposition of intermediates, which was formed by the combination of nitrate and nitrite with gaseous CO. When NH3 and NO existed together, CO oxidation was dominated by the promotional effect of NO.

Abstract:This study reports on the development of highly-efficient Pt/CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2 monolithic catalysts for the low-temperature conversion of NO to N2 via CO-SCR. In this case, ultrathin TiO2 nanosheet arrays are designed to in situ grow on flexible Ti mesh to provide more spaces/areas for the loading of highly-dispersed Fe2O3 and CuO active components. Furthermore, Pt nanoparticles with an average size of 1.30 nm are effectively decorated on the surface of CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2. The H2-TPR and NO-TPD results demonstrate that the excellent synergistic effect between TiO2, CuO, Fe2O3 and trace amounts of Pt is conducive to enhance the adsorption of NO and finally promote the CO-SCR. The obtained Pt/CuO-Fe2O3/TiO2 catalysts exhibit excellent CO-SCR performance with 100 % NO conversion, and 100 % N2 selectivity at 250 °C, showing great potential of de-NOx application by using toxic CO as reductant in industry.

Abstract:Simultaneous removal of NOx and CO from steel sintering has attracted great attention because it is difficult to balance the catalyst reducibility and surface acidity merely using metal oxides or zeolite catalysts. In this study, a mixed CuMn-HZSM-5 catalyst was prepared via an impregnation method. The optimized sample exhibited excellent performance with 90% NO conversion and 100% CO conversion at 175 degrees C. The activity window of the catalyst was coincident with the actual demand of sintering flue gas control at 150-250 degrees C The active component CuMn suppressed the excessive Lewis acid sites on the zeolite support for NH3 adsorption, while the reducibility of the catalyst also decreased compared with that of pure CuMn metal oxides. This synergistic effect was beneficial for the reduction of NH3 nonselective oxidation with O-2. In addition, both the DFT and DRIFTS results revealed that NO conversion was improved by CO introduction at low temperature, since NO could adsorb on the CO-preadsorbed sites for the reduction to N-2 via the O atoms of Mn(3)c sites, i.e., adsorbed CO could also serve as a reductant to reduce NO to N-2, which provides another reaction pathway in SCR reactions. Moreover, the NO2 and N2O2 species were observed in the spectra as key intermediates to oxidize CO to CO2, which are also the promoters for CO control.
