Abstract:This paper presents an analytical framework of coping behavior with exchange rate risk of foreign firms.Under this framework,using a survey of 352 agricultural firms in China,this paper examines coping behavior with exchange rate risk of agricultural firms employing multiple logit model from the viewpoint of firm competitiveness.It is found that firm's competitiveness is crucial to the selection of hedging strategy and the variables indicated competitiveness influence the selection in different directions and significance:The more strong ability of financing and technology is,the more agricultural firms tend to select operational strategy to cope with exchange risk.The higher the degree of internationalization is,the more the agricultural firms rely on financial strategy to hedging exchange risk.Meanwhile,the hedging behavior with exchange rate risk of agricultural firms presents obvious interregional difference.Finally,in terms of hedging exchange rate risk and enlarging exports of the Chinese foreign agricultural firm,some relevant policy suggestions are proposed.

Global Supply Chain Equilibrium Network Dynamics with Stochastic Exchange Rate Volatility

Abstract:Fluctuant exchange rate has impact on global supply chain network equilibrium transactions. In this paper, by modeling various fluctuation trends of exchange rate, different exchange rate levels are used to characterize the advantageous or disadvantageous influence on transaction costs and risks between every pair of decision-makers, which is more practical for real-life global supply chain scenarios. Based on the idea of network integration, a global supply chain network equilibrium model with stochastic exchange rate volatility can be transformed into a supernetwork that integrates a supply chain transaction network with a currency network. With a two-stage prediction-correction method, we perform numerical simulation and sensitivity analysis to demonstrate the effectiveness of our equilibrium model.

Abstract:Based on firm-level Chinese Customs and Industrial Production micro data for 2000–2013, this study investigates the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on the quality of products imported by Chinese manufacturing firms. The empirical results show that exchange rate appreciation upgrades the quality of imported products through the price effect, new product variety effect, and competitive effect channels, and by improving the quality of exported products. Our empirical results are robust after considering several potential problems. Furthermore, we find that the quality of products imported by firms with lower productivity, fewer financing constraints, non-core products, low market share, foreign-invested and private enterprises and countries with higher level of economic development upgrade more in respond to exchange rate appreciation. These results imply that exchange rate appreciation is an important way to encourage firms to upgrade the quality of imported products.

Abstract:In the new millennium,two features have developed in China's macro-economy:The first is the close association of macroeconomic fluctuations with foreign demand shocks;the second is the addition of processing trade to the foreign demand structure and its eventual precedence over normal trade in gross value.Owing to the development of these two features,the classic International Real Business Cycles Theory has failed to explain China's macroeconomic fluctuation and meanwhile there has been little research on such a typical foreign demand structure.To fill the gap between theory and reality,this paper further categorizes the trade sector in the International Real Business Cycles Theory into processing trade and normal trade.Under such a categorization,two key assumptions are put forward:(1)the home elasticity of substitution for intermediate goods is relatively small in the processing trade sector;(2)the home value added for intermediate goods is relatively small in the processing trade sector.With these assumptions,two contradictory mechanisms of the home effect of foreign demand shocks emerge in partial equilibrium:Assumption 1 means that the processing trade sector is adjusted more readily in the case of foreign demand shocks;Assumption 2 means that it is adjusted less readily in that case.After calibrating and simulating the theoretical model,this paper examines the compound effect of the two contradictory mechanisms in general equilibrium.The results show that the foreign demand shocks in the processing trade sector more strongly affect China's investment and import/export,while those in the normal trade sector more strongly affect China's GDP.These results indicate a possible dilemma that the adjustment of China's foreign demand structure may encounter.In other words,the rise in the share of either the processing trade or normal trade will not reduce the influence of foreign demand shocks on China's macro-economy.The only difference lies in the fields affected most strongly by the shocks. As the model indicates,the dilemma in the macro-economy partially stems from the changes in China's foreign demand structure in the past decade,which reflects its comparative advantage in labor and technology in its participation in the global production process,a fundamental and constant fact.There is a need for greater tolerance for a more volatile Chinese macro-economy as it is the result of the encounter of economic fundamentals and globalization.It is necessary to explore new ways to reduce the volatility of Chinese economy,such as seeking bigger control in the global value chain and diversifying foreign markets.This paper is an attempt to incorporate China's foreign demand structure into an international real business cycle model,with the quantity characteristics of the processing trade and normal trade as the starting points of modeling.Future research may examine the links between different stages of the processing trade,which means that if one link in the supply of intermediate goods is affected,the whole production will be affected(the most famous example is the 2011 Fukushima earthquake,which led to an abrupt stop in the global semi-conductor industry).

Abstract:We calculate the foreign value-added ratio (FVAR) to measure the global value chain (GVC) participation of Chinese exporting firms from 2000 to 2006. Motivated by the heterogeneous firm model of trade, we empirically explore the effects of firm productivity and financial constraints on firms' GVC participation. We find that (1) productivity increases and financial constraints reduce FVAR; (2) productivity affects FVAR for both first-time and continuous exporters, while financial constraints only significantly affect first-time exporters; and (3) financial constraints dampen the positive effect of productivity on FVAR. Our findings thus suggest that productivity and financial constraints play important roles in determining firms' GVC participation.

Abstract:This short paper briefly reviews the evolution of China's exchange rate regimes over the last two decades, and analyzes China's choices of exchange rate regimes. On balance, it seems desirable for China to maintain the managed float in the short run. Globalization and financial integration will lead China toward more liberal exchange rate regimes. But the process of moving towards more flexibility and full convertibility should be cautious, in particular taking into considerations of risks related to China's financial system stability, capital flight, and macroeconomic fundamentals.

Abstract:Using inter-country input-output model, this paper deconstructs the fluctuation of China's export growth rate from the perspective of global value chains. The results indicate that, China's export growth rate holds a significant "transitional fluctuations" feature under the mirror statistical method. Overall, from 2007 to 2011, the contribution of global value chains embedding on the fluctuation of China's export growth rate is biggest. From Sub-industry perspective, the contribution of technology-intensive manufacturing industry on the fluctuation of China's export growth rate is extremely high, the contribution rate of primary industry is relatively low.

Abstract:This paper studies the impact of global value chains (GVCs) participation on carbon emissions embodied in exports (EEE) of China during 2005-2016, and analyses firm heterogeneity from the perspective of firm ownership and trade patterns; Then, industries are classified based on factor intensity and technology level, and the industrial heterogeneity of different firms is analyzed; Finally, through counterfactual analysis, this paper evaluates EEE under four anti-globalization scenarios. The empirical study shows that with the increase of GVCs position, EEE first increases and then decreases, showing an inverted U-shaped distribution. From the perspective of firm ownership, the relationship between GVCs position of domestic firms and EEE is inverted U-shaped distribution, while GVCs position of multinational enterprises (MNEs) is positively correlated with EEE. The relationship of capital-intensive and technology-intensive domestic firms, high-tech and medium-tech manufacturing domestic firms are also inverted U-shaped distribution. The positive correlation of MNEs is reflected in the low-tech manufacturing industries. From the perspective of trade patterns, with the increase of GVCs position, EEE of processing trade firms presents an inverted U-shaped distribution, while it is not significant for general trade firms. The inverted U-shaped relationship between GVCs position in capital-intensive industries and EEE are confirmed in all firms. Under anti-globalization scenarios of 50% backflow, EEE would increase. Under scenarios of 100% backflow, EEE would reduce. The results above provide useful references to achieve carbon emission reduction targets.

Abstract:We have collected data on China's 22 main trading partners for 1984-2012 and used System GMM to study the influence of "Made in China" on the "Great Moderation" of the global economy. Our research shows that although trade scale, real effective exchange rate, oil prices, fixed capital investment and other variables have significantly expanded global economic volatility, "Made in China" has markedly restrained output growth rate fluctuations in countries around the world and price fluctuations in developed countries, helping the global economy develop with "high growth, low volatility." "Made in China" is a long-term variable in the context of the global value chain. China needs to take advantage of global value chain restructuring to further upgrade and develop processing and manufacturing industry and expand its presence in the international market. It could choose to adopt a "mirror strategy" and launch trade sanctions targeting counterpart industries or enterprises to counter irrational trade sanctions from the developed countries. At the same time, however, it is important for China to make its own contribution to improve global economic governance and building a new international economic order in the era of global value chains by strengthening its policy coordination with other countries.

Abstract:The fluctuation of goods price is the of-course result of the flowing exchange rate.The extent to which exchange rate affects international prices is called exchange rate pass-through.After reviewing the categories of exchange rate pass-through and their respective effects,this paper poses into the exchange rate pass-through by developing the production controlled models and furthers the research into the hypothesis of "different production controlled models,different price-decision strategy" followed by the Chinese exporters who are facing the fast appreciation of RMB.The study finds how exchange rate fluctuation is channeled into international pricing strategy under different production controlled models,which discloses the behind driving forces of China's strong export growth under RMB fast appreciation.
Exchange Rate Pass-Through to China'S Export Price: A Product-Level Investigation

Abstract:Exchange rate movement usually results in changes in the production costs of exporting firms, and, therefore, the prices and the quantity of traded products. The present paper constructs a theoretical model to demonstrate that export products with higher productivity, or with larger market share, or of higher quality will experience a less complete pass-through. Using the six-digit harmonized system export data from the CEPII database over the period of 2000 to 2013, the present paper examines how product heterogeneity affects the exchange rate pass-through of Chinese exports. The empirical results show that the most competitive Chinese export products, or those least affected by exchange rate risks, are those of higher quality, with higher technological complexity and at the high end of the international value chain. Therefore, Chinese exporting firms should pay more attention to improving export quality and upgrading technology to better cope with exchange rate risks and to enjoy more bargaining power in the international market.

Abstract:With the development of economic integration of the world, flow of fund, talent and technology in the whole world taking transnational corporations as carriers, make the division of labor among countries more and more shown as the division of labor among intermediate goods, the specialization among trade departments is turned to intra-industry specialization, and then developed into global division of labor in corporations again. In the transnational production and management, the transnational distribution of every link in the value chain forms the international division in industry, in enterprises, so we think perhaps it is more suitable to study trans-corporation global industry shift in terms of "value chain ". This text attempts to find out the inherent reason for trans-corporation's global industries shift from a new visual angle.

Abstract:This article clarifies the relationship between financial frictions, production line position and firm-level performance in China. We develop a stylized model in a partial equilibrium setting and incorporate financial frictions into the sequential production of firms. We use a sample of unbalanced panel data ranging from 19,929 firms in 2000 to 61,109 firms in 2013, by merging China's Customs Dataset, Chinese manufacturing firm dataset and global input-output tables between 2000 and 2013. In the presence of lower financial constraints, we find that: first, the firm's span of production stages becomes wider by its imports becoming more upstream and its exports becoming more downstream, and its average position becomes relatively downstream; Second, it tends to decrease debt financing relative to equity financing and obtains higher profits.

Abstract:This paper studies the causes, mechanisms and consequences of decreasing firm value and welfare loss in an economy under a. fixed exchange rate regime when there is in unexpected appreciation in domestic currency. We also study the possible economic crisis caused by the exchange rate shock. We consider the established production capacity its well as the training of firm-specific labors before production to obtain that. unexpected appreciation in domestic currency leads to unemployment of firm workers as well as a decrease in the firm's output and revenue. Furthermore, when the exchange rate appreciates to a, certain degree, it is likely to induce economic crisis-firms will stop production completely which will not only decrease the firm's value. but also create a greater loss of social welfare due to the waste of existing capacity and human capital in the economy. Our study also implies that, When an economy shifts from a fixed exchange rate regime to a. more flexible one, government could adopt gradual reform policies and partial deregulation of the exchange rate to reduce or prevent social welfare loss when domestic currency faces appreciation pressure.

Abstract:Since China joined the World Trade Organisation in 2001, the Chinese economy has grown rapidly, especially the tradable goods sector. However, the Chinese real exchange rate did not exhibit a persistent and stable appreciation until 2005. This is a puzzling fact that is inconsistent with theories. This paper documents several stylized facts during the economic transition and argues that two features of the Chinese economy may help explain the puzzling real exchange rate pattern for the Chinese economy: i) the faster total factor productivity (TFP) growth in the export sector compared with the import sector; and ii) excess supply of unskilled labor. We construct a small open economy model with an H-O trade structure. We show that, due to heterogeneous skilled labor intensity in export and import sectors, faster TFP growth in the export sector over that in the import sector will lead to the decline of return to capital and a rise of the skilled wage. Therefore, the decrease of return to capital and the persistent low unskilled wage, which is caused by the excess supply of unskilled labor, inhibit the rise in the relative price of non-tradable goods to tradable goods and the appreciation of the real exchange rate. Furthermore, we develop a dynamic small open economy model with multiple tradable goods sectors. We show that the model does fairly well in explaining the Chinese real exchange rate and other stylized facts in the economic transition. Finally, we demonstrate that our hypotheses are supported by cross-country evidence.

Abstract:An indisputable fact in Global Value Chains (GVCs) is the rapid catching-up of China with U.S.A.; however, the convergence speed and depth have yet remained to be explored. On the one hand, the heterogeneity of different business functional activities, i.e. management, R&D, marketing and fabrication, is barely discussed. On the other hand, the international income transfers further complicate catching-up issue, since wedge between value-added and national income exists. Taking account of both them in a global multi-country input-output setting enables us to better understand the speed and depth of catching-up for China vis-à-vis U.S.A. China has made progress on narrowing the gap, albeit slowing down in the mid-2010s, but far from complete. This convergence speed is unevenly proceeded across business functions/industries. Similar catching-up finding holds for our new national income approach, but to a lesser extent. GVC participation scale enlarging and productivity improvement jointly lead to this catching-up, wherein scale contributes more than does productivity. We also find that the scale role is quite heterogeneous across business functions and industries. Despite catching-up in productivity at all levels, but starting from an extremely low level, a major lagging productivity gap remains. Also, the increasingly important role of productivity is observed.

Abstract:Since the later half of 1997, negative has continuously been the price index change rate of China for more than twenty months. The unusual phenomenon of declining price since the foundation of PRC has caused a heated debate on deflation, among which the viewpoint that China has been in deflation takes the dominant place. This paper thinks that due to the integration of the global economy, the obscuring of the economic boundaries among countries and the enlargement of the economic systems, there emerge lots of different qualities and characteristics in the economic system. The essential changes lead to the high degree correlation among the country economies, so much as the policy changes. Therefore the deflation theory based on “single country theory” have many limitations. Based on the global economic integration and a basket of currencies, by selecting different monetary benchmark, this paper considers the exchange rate of RMB in relation to US dollar and several other important factors, such as the exchange rate of Japanese Yen, the price of the international crude oil and copper, and the Southeast Asia financial crisis. The essential reasons of the price changes in China in recent years are quantificationally analyzed. Thereby we demonstrate that the decline of the price in 1998 and 1999 basically is a normal falling back of price and the fiscal and monetary policies implemented recently to stimulate price do have already taken great effect. Finally, this paper points out the new change of the global economy from the reverse of the trend of several important economic indexes. Finally this paper points out that the newest changes happening to the global economic situation through the observation of several critical economic indices' changes. With the aid of the principle of the lag lead of the world economy and our economy, this paper proposes that the international circumstances should be observed carefully and analyzed in depth, and the policy to stimulate the price should be implemented discreetly in the future so as to look for a set of suitable and safe policies.
