Abstract:
It is of great significance for absorber designers to correctly understand impedance matching and its related calculation methods, because excellent impedance matching effect is an important prerequisite for absorber to consume electromagnetic wave (EMW). However, there are some problems in literatures, such as the lack of deep understanding of impedance matching and application conditions of Eq. (3) for the calculation of reflection loss (RL). Based on the transmission line theory of electronic circuit, this paper expounds the definition, symbol, property of various impedances and their influence on impedance matching effect. On the basis of simplifying the actual situation in the process of EMW absorption to the correct transmission line model, the original transmission line model of RL calculation formula and its limitation are pointed out. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of insufficient understanding of impedance matching and quarter - wavelength theory in the design of electromagnetic wave - absorbing materials. Specifically, the paper points out that in the literature, there is a lack of in - depth understanding of the concept of impedance matching and its related calculation methods. For example, when using formula (3) to calculate the reflection loss (RL), the understanding of the application conditions is insufficient. Based on the transmission line theory of electronic circuits, this paper expounds the definitions, symbols, properties of various impedances and their influence on the impedance - matching effect. By simplifying the actual electromagnetic wave - absorbing process to the correct transmission line model, the model of the original RL calculation formula and its limitations are pointed out, and the doubts about the validity of the quarter - wavelength theory in the literature are explained from three aspects: the reduction of the electromagnetic wave wavelength, multiple reflections and the impedance conversion of the wave - absorbing material.
It is mentioned in the paper that in order to achieve excellent electromagnetic wave - absorbing performance, correct understanding and application of impedance matching are the keys. However, in some literature, due to misunderstandings of different impedance functions, wrong symbols are used in the calculation formula, which will not only lead to calculation errors but also bring understanding deviations to readers. For example, some people think that the wave - absorbing material acts as a load in the transmission line model and use \(Z_L\) to represent its characteristic impedance. This view ignores the role of the metal backplane and wrongly believes that the metal backplane has no effect in RL calculation. In addition, some people think that the input impedance \(Z_{in}\) is equivalent to the characteristic impedance \(Z_M\) of the wave - absorbing material. When \(Z_{in}=Z_0\), reflection - free impedance matching can be achieved, but this view does not fully understand the relationship between the input impedance and the characteristic impedance.
The paper also discusses the role of the quarter - wavelength matching layer in electromagnetic interference and impedance conversion to eliminate reflections, but also points out the defects of the quarter - wavelength theory. Since the quarter - wavelengths of most electromagnetic waves in the 2 - 18 GHz frequency range are distributed on the centimeter scale, while the thickness of current wave - absorbing materials is usually on the millimeter scale, it is difficult to reach the theoretical thickness. Nevertheless, the validity of the quarter - wavelength theory can be explained by multiple reflections, wavelength changes and impedance conversion.
In conclusion, this paper emphasizes the importance of correctly understanding the transmission line model for calculating the impedance - matching effect and reflection loss in the design of wave - absorbing materials. When the actual working environment or structure of the wave - absorbing material changes, the corresponding transmission line model should be simplified first, and different RL calculation formulas should be derived from the basic calculation formula of the input impedance. The quarter - wavelength matching layer can not only realize the interference cancellation of electromagnetic waves but also play an active role in impedance matching through impedance conversion.
