Therefore the translation of movie titles is very important since they give potential audiences the first impression. This study collects some English translation versions of Chinese movies and discusses their translation strategy. Based on the analysis of some successful examples and inappropriate translations, we put forward a systematic strategy of translating movie titles.

Abstract:The four-character pattern is a unique form of Chinese language, whose definition is a word or phrase consisting of four syllables, including four-syllable simple words, compound words, idioms, fixed phrases and free phrases. These words are usually concise, expressive and rich in variations. However, there are no such corresponding expressions in English, which causes a great obstacle to the Chinese-English translation. In translation activities, the translation of idioms is often considered significant, which symbolizes the transmission and expression of culture. However, the four-character patterns in Chinese are simple in form, consisting of only four characters, but they have rich cultural connotations. Because of their complex and diverse structures and hidden meanings, English translations of these are often prone to cause problems such as unclear expressions, missing semantics, and loss of meaning. It is difficult to make simple word-for-word translations based on their literal meanings. Also, the common direct translations have long failed to meet the needs of English translations of idioms, which has become a major problem in translation activities.

Abstract:The film is a highly influential and popular audio-visual art. The title of a movie is the epitome and essence of its content. Films are both cultural arts and commercial products. An excellent film title translation plays an important role in promoting film transmission, which includes social functions such as conveying film information, showing the beauty of language and promoting box office revenue. As the continuous deepening of globalization and the prosperity of the China's film and television industry, there is an increasing number of foreign films entered the Chinese market and some influential and acclaimed Chinese films also accessed to international market. In this process, it is inevitable to involve the linguistic, cultural and aesthetic differences between the source language and the target language. Faced with the cultural differences in translation, the core issue is how to flexibly use translation strategies to have the translation of film titles to be the best. This paper analyzes the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in the process of translating English film titles, and discusses the interrelationship between these two strategies, the effects they achieved respectively and the development trend of them.

Abstract:Taking domestication and foreignization as the research object, this paper is meant to explore the applications of domestication and foreignization in English and Chinese film titles. Firstly, it probes into the main factors that have influence on the translation of film titles, namely ways of thinking, aesthetic concepts, business values and translators’ understandings of the cultural background of the source language. Secondly, by introducing translators like Venuti, Fu Lei, Qian Zhongshu and Eugene Nida, the paper demonstrates domestication and foreignization, and then discusses them in the film titles. Finally, the paper elaborates the reasons and examples behind domestication and foreignization and a combination of the two. According to the study, the usage of domestication or foreignization is closely connected with the linguistic characteristics and cultural background of English and Chinese. Besides, these two translation strategies reinforce each other and are closely interwoven.

Abstract:With the increasing development of globalization, films become a significant medium of cultural exchange among different countries. The film title, a key component of a film, plays an essential role in the propaganda of the film. Therefore, the translation of the film titles is critically important. This paper discusses the functions of film titles, analyzes the basic principles of English film title translation and cultural differences between China and western countries influencing the translation of English film titles, and then puts forward some translation strategies, including literal translation and transliteration, literal translation plus explanatory words and transliteration plus explanatory words, liberal translation, and creative translation, in the hope that these strategies to some extent can give some enlightenment to translators when English film titles are translated.

Abstract:Though the translation of film titles has not been firmly established within translation studies, the existing studies mainly focus on the translation strategies and process analysis from classic theories including Skopos theory and semantic equivalence. Meanwhile, there has been limited research to examine the translation of animation titles. This paper delves into the intricate world of animation titles and their translation dynamics across languages, especially focusing on English, Japanese, and Chinese, employing a methodology that combines data from IMDb.com and chineseanime.org with Weiciyun and Python analysis. The study investigates titles’ characteristics and features in each source language and the translation strategies used among them. The findings highlight that English, Japanese, and Chinese animation titles possess distinct structural and semantic attributes. These traits reflect the inherent linguistic norms and cultural preferences of each language. Furthermore, the study uncovers multifaceted translation strategies used to bridge the linguistic gaps among languages, including transliteration, literal translation, and adaptation. As for creative adaptation which has a large percentage of every translation process, it is conspicuous that the characteristics of those translated titles largely remain consistent with the features of the source texts. Also, this study exposes discernible patterns of cultural power dynamics influencing translation strategies, particularly evident in the prevalence of English loanwords and transliterations.

Abstract:The title of a film is an important factor in attracting audiences and markets. The same film in English is often released in different Chinese translations in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. According to the skopos theory, the purpose of translation determines the whole process and result of translation; the specific purpose of translation of a film title determines the uniqueness of its translation. Starting from skopos theory perspective, the paper compares and analyses the differences and the reasons behind the translations of specific film titles from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. It is found that mainland China tends to translate English titles in a more direct and conservative manner, while Hong Kong and Taiwan tend to translate them in a more paraphrased manner and with local language characteristics. The possible reasons for these differences lie in the different attitudes towards film, social mechanisms and linguistic and cultural differences between the three places.

Abstract:Subtitle translation for the English film"Twilight"can be defined as both brief and easy to be understood.In order to achieve the expected function of subtitle translation,namely,information and reaction transmission,subtitle translators of this film employed many translation strategies: literal translation,free translation,compilation and so on,which ensured that the target audience can get the clearest information and similar reaction as the source audience with smallest effort.This paper is a case study of the two Chinese subtitle versions for the English film"Twilight".It discussed the translation strategies employed with many analyzed examples.At last,several suggestions were put forward for film subtitle translation from English to Chinese.

Abstract:As a form of artistic expression, film is loved by the public. Film title, as a precise summary of the film content, plays a significant role in expressing the film theme. In the context of great differences between Chinese and western cultures, the translation of English film titles is undoubtedly faced with many difficulties, such as language differences, cultural conflicts and deficiencies, misunderstanding of the audience and so on. This paper studies the E-C translation of film titles from the perspective of relevance theory, to discuss how to reflect the functions of film titles precisely on the premise of considering the audience’s response. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, which will introduce the research background, research significance and research methods. The second is a review of the research situation of the Chinese translation of English film titles. The third part is the main part. This chapter will point out the needs of English film title translation by analyzing a large number of examples of film title translation. The fourth part is a summary of how to choose translation strategies and techniques in the translation of English film titles into Chinese, and how to use relevance theory to make the Chinese translation of film titles meet the needs of the audience.

Abstract:Movies are carriers of culture and have become an indispensable means of cultural dissemination in today's society. The demand for subtitle translation is also constantly increasing. Subtitle translation in films is constrained by time, space, and culture; therefore, subtitles should be concise and easy to understand. This article analyzed and evaluated the subtitle translation of the Chinese film "Chang 'an" based on three rules of Skopos theory: skopos rules, intratextual coherence and fidelity rule. The translation purpose of the translator is to help the audience have a better viewing experience and accurately convey the information of Chinese subtitles through a concise English translation. When translating Chinese to English subtitles, translators should omit repetitive or plot-irrelevant information, add conjunctions to make the translation smooth and coherent and transform cultural differences.

This paper, starting from the perspective of the Skopos theory, investigates the application strategies of the Skopos theory in the subtitle translation of this film series, aiming to promote cultural exchange and understanding effectively. This paper will study the subtitle translation of the "Frozen" series from the standpoint of Skopos theory, compare the application of Skopos theory in Chinese-English translation, further understand the relevant theories of translation purpose, and better grasp the practice of Skopos theory in movie subtitle translation.
Translation of Hollywood film titles: Implications of Culture-Specific Items in Greater China

Abstract:In view of the lack of updated analysis on film title translation in Greater China, the present study attempted to investigate translation of culture-specific items in Hollywood film titles among three regions of Greater China: Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. From 1989 to 2018, a film title database was built, comprising of 2472 source texts and over 7410 target texts. Culture-specific items were identified and classified into five themes, namely toponym; anthroponym and fictional character; forms of entertainment; means of transportation; and social taboos. Analysis was in two tiers: First, translation methods under each theme was compared within target regions. Second, corresponding cultural implications of the three target regions were discussed using the concept of glocalisation. In a translational perspective, adaptation was highly favoured by Hong Kong under film title translation, whereas transliterations and literal translations were preferred by Mainland China. In a cultural perspective, both Mainland China and Hong Kong were found to preserve local cultures via translation. While Mainland China attempted to protect the purity of Chinese language through using transliterations and literal translations, Hong Kong used Cantonese slangs and jargons to replace culture-specific items in source text. Different from the former regions, Taiwan adopted exotic and explicit translation of social taboos. The present research sheds new light on Translation Studies research by analyzing film title translation in a sociocultural perspective, and thus can offer stakeholders in the film industry to appreciate translation in another perspective.

Abstract:Chinese Four-character idioms are fixed phrases with four Chinese characters that have been used for a long time in Chinese. They are language units with richer meanings and equivalent grammatical functions than words. They are concise, easy to remember, and easy to use. Many idioms have two or more meanings. It is precisely for this reason that the English translation of Chinese idioms has brought considerable difficulties. In the process of translating idioms into English, it is difficult to be accurate, profound, and complete. Therefore, a variety of English translation techniques should be combined for translating Chinese four-character idioms. This paper analyzed the definition, characteristics, classification, and translatability of Chinese four-character idioms, and concluded three commonly applied strategies for translating Chinese four-character idioms into English: the literal translation, the free translation, and the combination of literal and free translation. Finally, some problems existing in the translation of Chinese four-character idioms are analyzed and summarized: poor acceptance by foreigners, loss of cultural elements, and unbalanced cultural status.

Abstract:Cinema has played a significant role in promoting cross-cultural communication and ingenious film themes are easy to attract the attention of the audience. The interaction of subtitles and other modalities in the film is conducive to the construction of film meaning. According to the four levels of culture, context, content and expression proposed by Professor Zhang Delu in the comprehensive theoretical framework of multimodal discourse analysis, this paper analyzes how the multimodal discourse plays a role in subtitle translation by studying the subtitle translation of Lighting Up the Stars, and then points out discourse meaning can be expressed by the interaction of visual, auditory and other modalities and subtitle texts. Therefore, the translator can use the translation techniques such as literal translation and omission to convey the core meaning of the movie in a concise and reasonable way. Excellent film subtitle translation helps audiences from different cultural backgrounds to better understand and appreciate the film, and helps Chinese film and television works to go global.
