Abstract:Dissimilarity and similarity are two basic concepts that the study of translation frequently touches upon. The untranslatable is usually traceable to dissimilarity, and the translatable, to similarity. Correspondingly, the unity of opposites between the two profoundly exhibits a comprehensive picture of translation. This paper, proceeding with the definition of dissimilarity, probes into the relationship between selfness and otherness to reveal the cross-cultural essence of translation. Confronted with the contradiction between dissimilarity and similarity, one must consider these important factors: expression of cultural positions as well as cultural reconstruction, and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication.

Abstract:Movie name, as an indispensable component of the movie as a whole, is used to transmit the ideas of the movies, please audiences with aesthetic value, and enhance the interests of watchers to watch it. Skopos theory highlights the importance of both the translator and the culture and it makes the translator find a suitable mode to translate the names of movies. Movie name translation has become a important part of translation studies. Skopos theory can lead the translator to do a rendering of movie names while he/she knows the objectives of translation.

Abstract:The article offers a classification of translation techniques based on the analysis of Russian-language titles of foreign films. The choice of film titles as the research material is due to the greatest complexity of their translation in comparison with other texts. this opens up wide opportunities for studying translation transformations as a reflection of the linguistic and cultural specifics of the language. In the name of any film, linguistic and cultural features are understandable only to a native speaker play an important role. However, some must necessarily be translated into another language, while preserving the originality, attractiveness and capacity. All this forces the interpreter to search for and use translation transformations more actively than when working with other texts. The article deals with various types of transformations associated with the need for linguistic and cultural reinterpretation of the text in the cultural space of the recipient country. The use of linguistic and cultural studies allows us to more fully and accurately convey to the consciousness of perceiver the semantic content of the film, starting with its name, taking into account the inclusion of the translation in the cultural archetypes and codes of the native language.

Abstract:With the development of modern society and economy gradually entering the global diversification phase, there are more and more channels of film and television culture transmission. As an important carrier of information dissemination in different regions of countries and even between nationalities, the screen culture plays an extremely important role in the communication of film and television culture. Due to the language and cultural background between different countries and ethnic groups, there are great cultural differences. Therefore, subtitle translation has become an important way of expressing information conversion between different languages and cultures. In the actual context, it is possible to convert the information dynamically. Therefore, from the perspective of contextual adaptation, colleges have been constantly innovating the forms and methods of English movie subtitle translation to better realize the communication and sharing between different film and television cultures.

Abstract:Movies are carriers of culture and have become an indispensable means of cultural dissemination in today's society. The demand for subtitle translation is also constantly increasing. Subtitle translation in films is constrained by time, space, and culture; therefore, subtitles should be concise and easy to understand. This article analyzed and evaluated the subtitle translation of the Chinese film "Chang 'an" based on three rules of Skopos theory: skopos rules, intratextual coherence and fidelity rule. The translation purpose of the translator is to help the audience have a better viewing experience and accurately convey the information of Chinese subtitles through a concise English translation. When translating Chinese to English subtitles, translators should omit repetitive or plot-irrelevant information, add conjunctions to make the translation smooth and coherent and transform cultural differences.

Abstract:Translation and metaphor share some fundamental characteristics.Both metaphor and translation have to do with the transformation of signs;in both activities,the meaning results from integration of differed contexts;both of them emphasize the importance of "difference";and both activities have similar cognitive mode and functions.This paper thus argues that translation is metaphor and that further discussions on this nature of translation may provide us with a better understanding of the latter as well as insights into the studies of related issues.

Abstract:As films are distributed across the globe, film song translation has become a subject of study, which entails considering multi-modal factors. This paper aims to explore the major dimensions and parameters involved in film song translation. Based on previous research on music and translation, this paper proposes a framework for studying film song translation from verbal, vocal, and visual dimensions. The verbal dimension involves semantic meaning, metaphors, images, mood, and emotion. The vocal dimension includes the number of syllables and musical notes, the length of musical notes, rhyme and parallelism, the rise and fall of the melody, and the segmentation of a line. The visual dimension covers the plot, characters, and background pictures. This paper uses this framework to analyze the Chinese translation of Amazing Grace in the film Forever Young to demonstrate how film song translation can be flexible in tackling verbal, vocal, and visual restrictions and possibilities.

Abstract:In recent years, the translation of film subtitles has received more and more attention as a cross ‐ cultural communication activity. Film is a very important part of the cultural industry, and the improvement of the international spread of Chinese films is hard without excellent translated texts. Taking the subtitle translation of the movie “Ba Bai”as the research object, this article combines the theory of communication and translation studies, and discusses the strategy of film subtitle translation. Research has proved that not only should the translation of film subtitles be studied from the perspective of linguistics, but also the nature of its cross ‐ cultural communication should be emphasized. Translators need to fully consider the differences between Chinese and Western languages, cultures, social backgrounds and audience’s audiovisual needs, and use translation strategies rationally to promote the “going global”of Chinese films.

Abstract:Movie translation plays an important role in the dissemination of a movie, just like the trademark and promotion card of a movie. It not only needs to match the style of the original movie, but also needs to have commercial value. The quality of title translation directly affects the box office and audience attendance. This paper takes the 250 movies with the highest Douban ratings as the research object, and collects relevant data by constructing a database. Through the literature survey, it is found that the current Chinese translation of movie title translation is mostly studied from the perspective of Purpose Theory and Dynamic Equivalence Theory, but a systematic framework has not yet been formed, so it is difficult to solve the problem of actual title translation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current problems in movie translation from the perspective of linguistic conformity theory, including copying and reproducing, formatting translation, unclear meaning, and words deviating from the theme. This paper argues that the proposed title translation should truly and accurately reflect the core of the original title and more deeply combine with the local culture, with the intention of providing new perspectives for movie translation to improve the translation quality of Chinese titles.

Abstract:The film is a highly influential and popular audio-visual art. The title of a movie is the epitome and essence of its content. Films are both cultural arts and commercial products. An excellent film title translation plays an important role in promoting film transmission, which includes social functions such as conveying film information, showing the beauty of language and promoting box office revenue. As the continuous deepening of globalization and the prosperity of the China's film and television industry, there is an increasing number of foreign films entered the Chinese market and some influential and acclaimed Chinese films also accessed to international market. In this process, it is inevitable to involve the linguistic, cultural and aesthetic differences between the source language and the target language. Faced with the cultural differences in translation, the core issue is how to flexibly use translation strategies to have the translation of film titles to be the best. This paper analyzes the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in the process of translating English film titles, and discusses the interrelationship between these two strategies, the effects they achieved respectively and the development trend of them.

Abstract:Subtitle translation for the English film"Twilight"can be defined as both brief and easy to be understood.In order to achieve the expected function of subtitle translation,namely,information and reaction transmission,subtitle translators of this film employed many translation strategies: literal translation,free translation,compilation and so on,which ensured that the target audience can get the clearest information and similar reaction as the source audience with smallest effort.This paper is a case study of the two Chinese subtitle versions for the English film"Twilight".It discussed the translation strategies employed with many analyzed examples.At last,several suggestions were put forward for film subtitle translation from English to Chinese.

Abstract:Translation is the process of changing spoken or written text into another language. It is widely considered that translation is not only a matter of language transmission but also a matter of cultural exchange between the two languages. This feature is especially evident in subtitle translation, which plays an important role in English films. With the development of cultural exchanges in recent years, films from different countries have been screened in different regions as a medium of communication, leading to an increase in demand for subtitle translations. And in the field of subtitle translation, Venutis domestication and foreignization strategies are the dominant methods. Taking the film Turning Red as an example, this article studied different cases with their cultural background and had a thorough analysis of how the strategies are used in each case, including the comparison between different methods. Based on the analysis, this study concluded the similarity and difference between domestication and foreignization and stressed that the two strategies should be combined, in order to transfer information to audiences.

Analysis of the Translation Characteristics of Movie Subtitles in the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory Taking The Grand Budapest Hotel Movie Subtitles As an Example

Abstract:. With the development of media, movies are gaining more and more attention as a way of cultural communication. The translation of movie subtitles plays an important role in assisting people to better understand the culture and the delivery values, which has become an essential part of the translation field. The research goal of this thesis is to analyze the subtitle translation characteristics of the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel by ap plying Eugene A. Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and combining it with translation strategies. The thesis further explores the positive impact and practical implications of the functional equivalence theory on subtitle translation. It was found that this movie accommodates the functional equivalence theory requirements in a comparatively flexible approach. The functional equivalency theory efficiently avoids the cumbersome language and format of subtitle translation in terms of the core structure of mo vie subtitle translation. Nida’s functional equivalence theory contributes to the elimination of cultural disparities in terms of the underlying meanings of movie subtitle translation. From the perspective of the main function of movie subti-tling, the application of functional equivalence theory facilitates the audience to be synchronized with the movie content.

This study collects some English translation versions of Chinese movies and discusses their translation strategy. Based on the analysis of some successful examples and inappropriate translations, we put forward a systematic strategy of translating movie titles.

Abstract:Through literature method and qualitative research, this paper systematically analyzes the papers on movie subtitle translation on academic journals at home and abroad from 2011 to 2020, sorts out and summarizes the research results from the aspects of movie types, research theories, research contents, etc. , and points out several deficiencies in China’s research, including the problems of the monotony of the language pairs, contents, theories involved in the research. At the same time, several suggestions are put forward to provide some reference for the study of movie subtitle translation.

A Study of Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory Taking the Movie "La La Land" as an Example

Abstract:. With the continuous development of international society, the forms of cultural exchanges are gradually diversified. The movie is an important carrier of culture, so subtitle translation has become an important field of translation research, the quality of which directly affects the dissemination of works and audience acceptance. In order to make audiences from different cultural backgrounds understand the meaning of a movie, subtitle translation requires the translator to let the target language audience get the same artistic enjoyment as the source language audience, which coincides with Naida's theory of functional equivalence. Therefore, using this theory to guide movie subtitle translation can effectively improve the quality of translation. In order to better improve the target language audience's understanding of subtitles and to show the artistry, culture and science of subtitle translation, this paper, based on the basic framework of the functional equivalence theory and the characteristics of subtitle translation, takes the movie "La La Land" as an example . It explores how the functional equivalence theory can guide the subtitle translation from the three dimensions of vocabulary, style, and culture, to enable the target language audience to understand the content of the original text deeply and to help the translator to improve the translated contents from the audience's point of view, thus improving the quality of subtitle translation. Finally, it is concluded that using the theory of functional equivalence to guide movie subtitle translation and adopting flexible translation methods can improve the quality of subtitle translation so that people can enjoy movies.
