Abstract:Purpose Although disparities in colorectal cancer (CRC) with regard to race, socioeconomic status, and geography are well documented, the extent to which these factors contribute to premature death resulting from CRC nationwide and by state is unknown. Patients and Methods We calculated age-standardized CRC death rates for three broad educational categories as a marker of socioeconomic status by race/ethnicity and state among individuals age 25 to 64 years from 2008 through 2010. We also calculated the proportion of premature death resulting from CRC that could potentially be averted in each state by applying the average death rate for the five states with the lowest rates among the most educated whites (Connecticut, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin) to all populations.
