Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.

Abstract:A new all-fiber structured saturable absorber, consisting of graded index multimode fiber-no-core fiber-graded index multimode fiber (GIMF–NCF–GIMF), in a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. The conventional solitons with a center wavelength of 1575.5 nm, a pulse width of 707 fs, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 66 dB are generated at the repetition frequency of 18.919 MHz. The different lengths of each part of the saturable absorber (SA) can usually allow the fiber laser system to reach mode-locking, which shows that the length limits on this SA can not be quite as serious. Meanwhile, by only adjusting the polarization controller, tightly bound solitons and loosely bound solitons can be readily generated. The pulse trains of tightly bound solitons exhibit a separation of 1.52 ps, a pulse width of ∼850 fs, and centered at 1573 nm, whereas the pulse separation of loose bound solitons are from 23 ps to 58 ps, which shows wide variations of the time dispersion. More importantly, it is found that tightly bound solitons and loosely bound solitons can exist simultaneously for higher-order solitons, for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Such an SA is easy to fabricate, highly stable and of low cost, and has high potential in ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:Passively mode locked fiber lasers are excellent platforms for soliton generation. Here, multi-state switchable behaviors in a slightly normal dispersion mode-locked fiber laser are experimentally demonstrated with an identical configuration. A saturable absorber based on single-wall carbon nanotube is served as mode-locking device and an intrinsic birefringence spectral filtering is employed as a tunable inline filter. Consequently, with properly modifying pumping powers and orientations of polarization controller paddles, the operation regimes of the proposed laser could be reversibly switched between dissipative solitons and amplifier similaritons, and the characteristics of intermediate states are recorded. Tunable dissipative solitons with a tuning range of 38 nm and noise-like pulses could also alternatively be generated. This multi-state behavior switching could be attributed to the strong filtering caused by the limited gain bandwidth under strong pump strength. The experimental observations of these multi-state switchable transitions may offer insight into the pulse regime dynamics in the near-zero dispersion region and offer flexibility in multi-functional designs of the laser configuration, which would enable innovations in nonlinear optics and its applications.

Abstract:We show, experimentally and numerically, that a mode-locked fiber laser can operate in a regime where two dissipative soliton solutions coexist and the laser will periodically switch between the solutions. The two dissipative solitons differ in their pulse energy and spectrum. The switching can be controlled by an external perturbation and triggered even when switching does not occur spontaneously. Numerical simulations unveil the importance of the double-minima loss spectrum and nonlinear gain to the switching dynamics.

Abstract:Transitional operations of multiple dissipative solitons in a long-cavity normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser are experimentally investigated. Multiple dissipative solitons, including a stable soliton pair and a soliton triplet are observed by increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization controllers. Two main boundaries of the stable asymmetric soliton and oscillating soliton are found between steady mode-locking. Moreover, multiple dissipative solitons with greater quantities of solitons are observed with pump power increasing. The experimental results agree well with a previous numerical study of multiple dissipative solitons.

Abstract:We present a dual-color-soliton fiber laser at two different wavebands by nonlinear multimode interference. A saturable absorber (SA) with single-mode—multimode (MMF)—single-mode fiber structure is placed in the common branch shared by two sub-cavities. Saturable absorption effects can be simultaneously satisfied at 1.5 and 2 µm at a proper length of the MMF. Dual-color solitons can still remain, even by slightly tuning the length of the MMF. The periodical characteristic of this SA provides a flexible choice of MMF length, making it simple for simultaneous mode locking (SML) at two separate wavebands in practice. Our approach not only paves the way for SML at two or more wavebands by the MMF but also could lead to significant applications in pump-probe spectroscopy.

Abstract:We report on the generation of multi-wavelength dissipative soliton (DS) in an all normal dispersion fiber laser passively mode-locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). We show that depending on the strength of the cavity birefringence, stable single-, dual- and triple-wavelength DSs can be formed in the laser. The multi-wavelength soliton operation of the laser was experimentally investigated, and the formation mechanisms of the multi-wavelength DSs are discussed.

Abstract:Sinusoidal spectral filtering (SSF) plays an essential role in dual- and multi-wavelength operations in mode-locked fiber lasers. However, the impact of SSF on the underlying soliton dynamics has not been systematically revealed so far. Herein, we investigate numerically the SSF-based soliton dynamics in mode-locked fiber lasers. SSF could facilitate the formation of dual-wavelength mode locking, and the generation of dual-comb solitons with slightly different group velocities. Pulse shaping based on SSF and gain filtering leads to the non-monotonic relationship between both solitons’ group velocity difference and the cavity gain. In addition, dual-comb soliton mode locking exhibits threshold feature and multi-pulse instability to soliton annihilation and diverse soliton coexistences. Our investigations could shade new light on the SSF-based soliton dynamics and might bring new insights into the laser design and applications.

Abstract:In mode-locked fiber lasers, the formation of ultrashort pulses from noisy or unstable states is a crucial area of research. Investigating these complex nonlinear dynamics can lead to valuable insights and new practical engineering techniques, particularly for the design and optimization of optical systems. Time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform, utilized in our study to investigate dissipative solitons formation in a net-normal dispersion nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locked fiber laser, provides a window into the intricate dynamics of such systems. In our experiments, the identification of five distinct transient stages in the formation process sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of dissipative soliton (DS) formation. The five distinct transient stages involved in the formation process include relaxation oscillation, modulation instability, spectral broadening, soliton explosions (SEs), and stable mode-locking. Notably, we also observed the generation of dissipative rogue waves during the SE stage. Our findings shed light on the intricate dynamics of DS formation and offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:The tunable-wavelength broadband spectrum dissipative soliton (DS) is demonstrated in Yb-doped mode-locked laser using an all-fiber structure saturable absorber (SA), that is, graded index multimode fiber (GIMF)-step index multimode fiber (SIMF)-GIMF with 4.70% modulation depth and 4.55 mW saturation power. Increasing pump power alters intra-cavity balance between loss and gain and nonlinear and dispersion, causing wavelength adjustment and spectrum broadening. The center wavelength shifts towards shorter wavelength with rang of 1037.77-1024.83 nm, corresponding 3-dB bandwidth widens from 6.10 to 9.23 nm and pulse width narrows from 23.80 to 13.38 ps. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 71.2 dB at the repetition rate of 14.63 MHz. The GIMFSIMF-GIMF structure has a huge potential to serve as both SA and filter component for the tunable-wavelength broadband spectrum Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser (MLFL), which is favorable for developing the field of nonlinear microscopy and material processing.

Abstract:Generation of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) is numerically investigated in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by a real saturable absorber (SA). In the simulation model, the SA includes both the saturable absorption and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) effects. It is found that the RSA effect induced by the SA material itself plays a dominant role in generating the DSR pulses. We also systematically analyze the influence of key SA parameters on the evolution of DSR pulses in the cavity. Our simulation results not only offer insight into the underlying mechanism of DSR generation in mode-locked fiber lasers by means of real SAs, but also provide a guideline for engineering SA parameters to generate optical pulses with the highest possible energy.

Abstract:Though normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber lasers generally work on a single-pulse regime due to the large chirp of the pulses, we observe bound states of one kind of dissipative solitons in the laser. The separation between the bounded pulses in such soliton molecules increases with the pump power, and also varies with the settings of polarization controllers, which is consistent with other kinds of bounded pulses such as solitons. Our study indicates that the bound state of pulses is an intrinsic feature of mode-locked lasers and is independent of pulse profiles, stimulated by overdriving of mode-locking mechanisms.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a passively mode-locked fiber laser employing a fiber-based semiconductor saturable absorber (SSA) operating in transmission. Polarization rotation locked vector solitons are observed in the laser. Due to the intrinsic dynamic feature of the laser, period-doubling of these vector solitons has also been observed. Furthermore, extra spectral sidebands are formed on the optical spectrum, caused by the energy exchange between the two orthogonal polarization components of the vector solitons. By careful reduction of the pump power together with fine adjustment to the cavity birefringence, period-one state can further be obtained. Additionally, the phase noise properties of the vector soliton fiber laser have also been characterized experimentally and analytically.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) has been demonstrated. In this laser, mode-locking is achieved based on equivalent saturation absorption of the NOLM, while the dual-wavelength operation is attributed to the online birefringent fiber filter composed of a polarizer and a section of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). The wavelength spacing of dual-wavelength spectrum can be adjusted through changing the PMF length, and the central wavelengths can be tuned through rotating the polarization controllers. It is also found that at the two central wavelengths of the dual-wavelength pulse, switchable single wavelength mode-locked pulse can be generated. In addition, noise-like pulses with broadband spectra can be generated, when two kinds of mode-locking mechanisms conflict. The dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser has important potential applications in the laser detection, sensing and other fields. Its rich dynamics also provides a system platform for basic research on laser physics.

Abstract:A stable dissipative soliton (DS) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser passively mode locked by InSb saturalbe absorber (SA) is achieved for the first time. The used InSb SA is prepared by magnetron-sputtering deposition (MSD) method based on tapered fiber. The achieved stable dissipative soliton (DSs) possess a central wavelength of 1570 nm, pulse duration of 25.14 ps, repetition rate of 14.91 MHz, and a maximum average output power of 11.57 mW, respectively. The experiment verifies the merits of high thermal damage resistance, superb long-term stability and excellent antioxidant capacity of the prepared InSb SA, as well enriches in-depth DSs researches based on 2D-material SAs.

Dual-wavelength Harmonic Mode-Locked Dissipative Soliton Resonance of Yb Fiber Laser

Abstract:Dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) mode-locked fiber lasers have stimulated great interest recent years due to their unique pulse-breaking-free advantage for scaling soliton pulse energy. However, the mechanism accounting for pulse breaking to generate multipulses in DSR fiber lasers has not reached a consensus. Here, we show that harmonic mode-locked DSR 1-mu m Yb-doped fiber laser in the dual-wavelength regime can be realized with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). In the fundamental frequency (3.5 MHz) mode-locked state, the pulse width continuously broadens from 2 to 8.9 ns as the output power increases from 1.26 to 5.1 mW (pulse energy being from 0.36 to 1.46 nJ), while the pulse peak power is clamped at 0.17 W, highlighting the typical characteristics of DSR mode-locking operation. Through simply adjusting the SESAM's feedback conditions, the DSR fiber laser can transits from the fundamental-frequency mode locking to harmonic mode-locked states. Harmonic states from the 2nd to 9th order have been observed, with pulse repetition rate enhanced from 7 to 31.5 MHz. Under fixed pump power, increasing harmonic orders leads to reduction of the pulse width and pulse energy but does not change the unique quantization feature of the peak power. The status of the SESAM also guarantees the generation of dual wavelengths centered at 1072.5 and 1079.5 nm with spectral widths of 2.7 and 1.9 nm, respectively. This dual-wavelength harmonic mode-locked DSR Yb fiber laser can find applications in various areas.

Abstract:A tunable L-band dissipative soliton (DS) fiber laser with nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) playing the roles of both a saturable absorber (SA) and a tunable filter has been demonstrated experimentally and numerically. By appropriate adjustment of the states of the polarization controllers (PCs) and the pump power, DSs with continuously tunable wavelengths have been observed over the wavelength range from 1583.0 to 1602.4 nm with a 3-dB spectral bandwidth of around 20 nm and from 1581.9 nm to 1602.6 nm with a 3-dB spectral bandwidth of around 4 nm. In addition, we have observed that by increasing the pump power, the 3-dB spectral bandwidth of the DS could be increased without pulse breaking. Abstract:A novel mode-locking method based on nonlinear multimode interference (NLMI) using a distributed large-core (105 μm) graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF)-based saturable absorber (SA) capable of generating four pulse modes is proposed. The distributed SA geometry consists of two GIMFs located at different positions in the resonant cavity. The coupling and joint operation not only facilitate resistance to pulse fragmentation but also provide a sophisticated and widely tunable transmission with saturable and reverse saturable absorption phenomena. Based on this, dissipative soliton (DS), dissipative soliton resonance (DSR), wedge-shaped, and staircase pulses are achieved without additional filters. The DS has accessible output power, pulse energy, bandwidth, and duration of up to 15.33 mW, 2.02 nJ, 22.63 nm, and ~1.68 ps. The DSR has an achievable pulse duration and energy of ~32.39 ns, 30.3 nJ. The dispersion range that allows DS operation is studied, and the dynamics of the evolution from DS to DSR are observed. The versatility, flexibility, and simplicity of the SA device, combined with the possibility of scaling the pulse energy, make it highly attractive for ultrafast optics and nonlinear dynamics.
