Abstract:We give an overview of the main features of the CMS trigger and data acquisition (DAQ) system. Then, we illustrate the strategies and trigger configurations (trigger tables) developed for the detector calibration and physics program of the CMS experiment, at start-up of LHC operations, as well as their possible evolution with increasing luminosity. Finally, we discuss the expected CPU time performance of the trigger algorithms and the CPU requirements for the event filter farm at start-up.

Abstract:The DOslash experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider (Batavia, IL, USA) has undergone significant upgrades in anticipation of high luminosity running conditions. As part of the upgrade, the capabilities of the Central Track Trigger (CTT) to make trigger decisions based on hit patterns in the Central Fiber Tracker (CFT) have been much improved. We report on the implementation, commissioning and operation of the upgraded CTT system.

Abstract:The Level-1 trigger scouting system of the CMS experiment aims at intercepting the intermediate data produced by the L1 trigger processors before the final trigger decision. This system can be complemented by adding the raw stream of data collected from the detector front-end, whenever the throughput is manageable. In this work, the triggerless readout of the CMS Drift Tubes (DT) detector is presented. This is realized by reading a sector of the DT which has been equipped with the preproduction of Phase-2 upgrade front-end boards. A Xilinx VCU118 acts as a concentrator of the Phase-2 demonstrator lpGBT links and transmits data to a server via 100G TCP/IP. First results coming from a test-stand mimicking the sector demonstrator are shown.

Abstract:The CMS experiment has been designed with a two-level trigger system: the Level-1 Trigger, implemented on custom-designed electronics, and the High Level Trigger, a streamlined version of the CMS offline reconstruction software running on a computer farm. During its second phase the LHC will reach a luminosity of $7.5\times10^{34}\,\textrm{cm}^{-2}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}$ with a pileup of 200 collisions, producing integrated luminosity greater than 3000 fb$^{-1}$ over the full experimental run. To fully exploit the higher luminosity, the CMS experiment will introduce a more advanced Level-1 Trigger and increase the full readout rate from 100 kHz to 750 kHz. CMS is designing an efficient data-processing hardware trigger (Level-1) that will include tracking information and high-granularity calorimeter information. The current conceptual system design is expected to take full advantage of advances in FPGA and link technologies over the coming years, providing a high-performance, low-latency system for large throughput and sophisticated data correlation across diverse sources. The higher luminosity, event complexity and input rate present an unprecedented challenge to the High Level Trigger, that aims to achieve a similar efficiency and rejection factor as today despite the higher pileup and more pure preselection. In this presentation we will discuss the ongoing studies and prospects for the online reconstruction and selection algorithms for the high-luminosity era.

Abstract:CLIC is a proposed linear $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider with center-of-mass energies of up to $3\,\textrm{TeV}$. Its main objectives are precise top quark and Higgs boson measurements, as well as searches for Beyond Standard Model physics. To meet the physics goals, the vertex and tracking detectors require not only a spatial resolution of a few micrometers and a very low material budget, but also timing capabilities with a precision of a few nanoseconds to allow suppression of beam-induced backgrounds. Different technologies using hybrid silicon detectors are explored for the vertex detectors, such as dedicated readout ASICs, small-pitch active edge sensors as well as capacitively coupled High-Voltage CMOS sensors. Monolithic sensors are considered as an option for the tracking detector, and a prototype using a CMOS process with a high-resistivity epitaxial layer is being designed. Different designs using a silicon-on-insulator process are under investigation for both vertex and tracking detector. All prototypes are evaluated in laboratory and beam tests, and newly developed simulation tools combining Geant4 and TCAD are used to assess and optimize their performance. This contribution gives an overview of the R&D program for the CLIC vertex and tracking detectors, highlighting new results from the prototypes.

The CMS Level-1 Trigger at LHC and Super-LHC

Abstract:The Level-1 trigger of the CMS experiment at CERN has been designed to select proton-proton interactions whose final state includes signatures of new physics in the form of high transverse energy electrons, photons, jets, or high missing transverse energy. The Level-1 trigger system process data in a pipeline fashion at a rate of 40 MHz, has a design latency of 128 bunch crossings and an output rate of 100 KHz. The design of this system is presented with emphasis on the calorimeter triggers. After a long period of testing and validation of its performance the Level-1 trigger system has been installed and commissioned at the CMS experiment at CERN. Cosmic ray data and Monte Carlo events have been used to compare the actual performance of the trigger with expectations from off-line emulation models. Results from these studies are presented here. The limitations of this system to cope with future luminosity upgrades of the LHC, the Super-LHC, are discussed. The current CMS plan for a new CMS Level-1 trigger system at the Super-LHC is presented. The center point of the new system is a Level-1 tracking trigger which uses data from a new CMS silicon tracking detector.

Abstract:The trigger systems of the LHC detectors play a crucial role in determining the physics capabilities of the experiments. A reduction of several orders of magnitude of the event rate is needed to reach values compatible with the detector readout, offline storage and analysis capabilities. The CMS experiment has been designed with a two-level trigger system: the Level 1 (L1) Trigger, implemented on custom-designed electronics, and the High Level Trigger (HLT), a streamlined version of the CMS reconstruction and analysis software running on a computer farm. The software-base HLT requires a trade-off between the complexity of the algorithms, the sustainable output rate, and the selection efficiency. This is going to be even more challenging during Run II, with a higher centre-of-mass energy, a higher instantaneous luminosity and pileup, and the impact of out-of-time pileup due to the 25 ns bunch spacing. The online algorithms need to be optimised for such a complex environment in order to keep the output rate under control without impacting the physics efficiency of the online selection. Tracking, for instance, will play an even more important role in the event reconstruction. In this poster we will present the performance of the online track and vertex reconstruction algorithms, and their impact on the hadronic triggers that make use of b-tagging and of jets reconstructed with the Particle Flow technique. We will show the impact of these triggers on physics performance of the experiment, and the latest plans for improvements in view of the Run II data taking in 2015.

Abstract:A new silicon detector has been developed to provide the PHENIX experiment with precise charged particle tracking at forward and backward rapidity. The Forward Silicon Vertex Tracker (FVTX) was installed in PHENIX prior to the 2012 run period of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The FVTX is composed of two annular endcaps, each with four stations of silicon mini-strip sensors, covering a rapidity range of 1.2 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.2 that closely matches the two existing PHENIX muon arms. Each station consists of 48 individual silicon sensors, each of which contains two columns of mini-strips with 75 mu m pitch in the radial direction and lengths in the phi direction varying from 3.4 mm at the inner radius to 11.5 mm at the outer radius. The FVTX has approximately 0.54 million strips in each endcap. These are read out with FPFIX chips, developed in collaboration with Fermilab, which are wire bonded directly to the mini-strips. The maximum strip occupancy reached in central Au-Au collisions is approximately 2.8%. The precision tracking provided by this device makes the identification of muons from secondary vertices away from the primary event vertex possible. The expected distance of closest approach (DCA) resolution of 200 mu m or better for particles with a transverse momentum of 5 GeV/c will allow identification of muons from relatively long-lived particles, such as D and B mesons, through their broader DCA distributions. Abstract:The High Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC) is planned to begin data taking in 2029, with the instantaneous luminosity expected to increase to 4 times its current value and the average number of particle interactions per bunch crossing increasing by approximately 3.5 times its current value. The current endcap calorimeters in the CMS detector will be replaced by a novel high granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) that will have fine segmentation in both the transverse and longitudinal directions and will be the first such calorimeter specifically optimised for particle flow reconstruction to operate at a colliding-beam experiment. The Level 1 trigger of the CMS experiment will combine the calorimeter data with tracking information to allow particle-flow techniques to be used. The high granularity of the calorimeter leads to about six million readout channels in total, concentrated in one million trigger cells, sampled for the L1 trigger at a rate of 40 MHz. The trigger data volumes will be an order of magnitude above those currently handled in CMS, posing significant challenges for data manipulation and processing. In addition, the trigger algorithms must be able to efficiently reject the huge background rate in the forward region of the detector due to the high pileup environment. The status of the HGCAL trigger architecture and design, as well as the algorithms developed in order to tackled these major issues, is presented here. The data flow is described from the formation and preselection of trigger cells on detector to the generation of two types of trigger primitives off detector, projective towers of energy in the (η, φ) plane and three-dimensional clusters of particles. Particle flow will use these 3D clusters, and their formation is described and followed by recent developments in the optimization of their transverse size.

Abstract:The Pixel Detector is the innermost detector of the tracking system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) . It precisely determines the interaction point (primary vertex) of the events and the possible secondary vertexes due to heavy flavours (b and c quarks); it is part of the overall tracking system that allows reconstructing the tracks of the charged particles in the events and combined with the magnetic field to measure their momentum. The pixel detector allows measuring the tracks in the region closest to the interaction point. The Level-1 (real-time) pixel based tracking trigger is a novel trigger system that is currently being studied for the LHC upgrade. An important goal is developing real-time track reconstruction algorithms able to cope with very high rates and high flux of data in a very harsh environment. The pixel detector has an especially crucial role in precisely identifying the primary vertex of the rare physics events from the large pile-up (PU) of events. The goal of adding the pixel information already at the real-time level of the selection is to help reducing the total level-1 trigger rate while keeping an high selection capability. This is quite an innovative and challenging objective for the experiments upgrade for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) . The special case here addressed is the CMS experiment. This document describes exercises focusing on the development of a fast pixel track reconstruction where the pixel track matches with a Level-1 electron object using a ROOT-based simulation framework.

Abstract:As online trigger for events containing $\Lambda$ hyperons in p+p collisions at $\mathrm{3.1\,GeV}$ a silicon-based device has been designed and built. This system has been integrated close to the target region within the FOPI spectrometer at GSI and was also employed as a tracking device to improve the vertex reconstruction of secondary decays. The design of the detector components, read-out, the trigger capability as well as the tracking performance are presented. An enrichment factor of about 14 was achieved for events containing a $\Lambda$-hyperon candidate.

Abstract:The trigger system of Beijing Spectrometer III, part of the upgrade of Beijing Electron Positron Collider, has been designed and implemented, and is ready for installation. This paper describes briefly the system components, its characteristics, and some technical issues. The system consists mainly of four parts: MDC (drift chamber) tracking subsystem, EMC (electromagnetic calorimeter) subsystem, TOF (time of flight) subsystem and global trigger. Some highlights in designing of this system includes: trigger scheme optimization with software simulation; optical transmission between trigger and FEEs to realize isolation with FEEs to avoid ground loop current interference; designed with most latest FPGA (Xilinx Spartan 3, VirtexII Pro...) for simplicity, high reliability and easy maintenance and hence smaller system; FPGA in-system programming or firmware online downloadable via onboard, panel connector and/or VME bus for modification flexibility during commissioning. Different from the usual fix delay data transmission from FEE to trigger, the RocketIO has been used as SEDES.

Abstract:At the Large Hadron Collider at CERN the proton bunches cross at a rate of 40MHz. At the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment the original collision rate is reduced by a factor of O (1000) using a Level-1 hardware trigger. A subsequent factor of O(1000) data reduction is obtained by a software-implemented High Level Trigger (HLT) selection that is executed on a multi-processor farm. In this review we present in detail prototype CMS HLT physics selection algorithms, expected trigger rates and trigger performance in terms of both physics efficiency and timing.

Abstract:The Super Tau-Charm Facility (STCF) is a future high luminosity electron-positron collider proposed in China, with a peak luminosity greater than 0.5 x 10(35) cm(-2) s(-1) at center-of-mass energy of 4.0 GeV. The main drift chamber (MDC) is designed as the central tracker, which provides the charged particle information for the level-1 trigger. This paper presents an FPGA-based fast trigger algorithm with the function of finding the charged particle tracks and reconstructing their transverse momentum and azimuthal angle. It adopts a two-stage lookup-table-based pattern matching architecture. The prototype trigger logic was implemented in a Xilinx XCKU060 FPGA. Test results with simulated data suggest that the trigger efficiency of J/Psi events is better than 96%, and the resolution in the reconstructed track's azimuthal angle at the interaction point is better than 12 mrad. The overall dead time is 24 ns and the total latency is 339 ns. All these performances meet the requirements of the MDC trigger in the current conceptual design stage of STCF project.

Abstract:We will present a DAQ prototype designed for the ATLAS small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC) Phase-I trigger upgrade. The prototype includes two VMM2 chips developed to read out the signals of the sTGC, a Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA used for the VMM2 configuration and the events storage, and a Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver (GET) working at the physical layer. The features of the DAQ prototype are described in detail.

Abstract:The silicon vertex detector (SVD) is installed at the heart of the Belle II experiment, taking data at the high-luminosity $B$-Factory SuperKEKB since 2019. The detector has shown a stable and above-99\% hit efficiency, with a large signal-to-noise in all sensors since the beginning of data taking. Cluster position and time resolution have been measured with 2020 and 2022 data and show excellent performance and stability. The effect of radiation damage is visible, but not affecting the performance. As the luminosity increases, higher machine backgrounds are expected and the excellent hit-time information in SVD can be exploited for background rejection. In particular, we have recently developed a novel procedure to select hits by grouping them event-by-event based on their time. This new procedure allows a significant reduction of the fake rate, while preserving the tracking efficiency, and it has therefore replaced the previous cut-based procedure. We have developed a method that uses the SVD hits to estimate the track time (previously unavailable) and the collision time. It has a similar precision to the estimate based on the drift chamber but its execution time is three orders of magnitude smaller, allowing a faster online reconstruction that is crucial in a high luminosity regime. The track time is a powerful information provided to analysis that allows, together with the above-mention grouping selection, to raise the occupancy limit above that expected at nominal luminosity, leaving room for a safety factor. Finally, in June 2022 the data taking of the Belle II experiment was stopped to install a new two-layer DEPFET detector (PXD) and upgrade components of the accelerator. The whole silicon tracker (PXD+SVD) has been extracted from Belle II, the new PXD installed, the detector closed and commissioned. We briefly describe the SVD results of this upgrade.

The CMS High Level Trigger: Commissioning and First Operation with LHC Beams

Abstract:The CMS experiment will collect data from the proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at a centre-of-mass energy up to 14 TeV. The CMS trigger system is designed to cope with unprecedented luminosities and LHC bunch-crossing rates up to 40 MHz. The unique CMS trigger architecture only employs two trigger levels. The Level-1 trigger is implemented using custom electronics. The High Level Trigger is implemented on a large cluster of commercial processors, the Filter Farm. Trigger menus have been developed for detector calibration and for fulfilment of the CMS physics program, at start-up of LHC operations, as well as for operations with higher luminosities. A complete multipurpose trigger menu developed for an early instantaneous luminosity of 10^{32}cm{-2}s{-1} has been tested in the HLT system under realistic online running conditions. The required computing power needed to process with no dead time a maximum HLT input rate of 50 kHz, as expected at startup, has been measured, using the most recent commercially available processors. The Filter Farm has been equipped with 720 such processors, providing a computing power at least a factor two larger than expected to be needed at startup. Results for the commissioning of the full-scale trigger and data acquisition system with cosmic muon runs are reported. The trigger performance during operations with LHC circulating proton beams, delivered in September 2008, is outlined and first results are shown.

Abstract:Modern precision neutrino experiments like Double Chooz require a highly efficient trigger system in order to reduce systematic uncertainties. The trigger and timing system of the Double Chooz experiment was designed according to this goal. The Double Chooz trigger system is driven by the basic idea of triggering on multiple thresholds according to the total visible energy and additionally triggering on the number of active photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in the detector. To do so, the trigger system continuously monitors the analogue signals from all PMTs in the detector. The amplitudes of these PMT-signals are summed for groups of certain PMTs (group signals) and for all PMTs (sum signal), respectively. The group signals are discriminated by two thresholds for each input channel and four thresholds for the sum signal. The resulting signals are processed by the trigger logic unit which is implemented in a FPGA. In addition to the proper trigger, the trigger system provides a common clock signal for all subsequent data acquisition systems to guarantee a synchronous readout of the Double Chooz detectors. The present design of the system provides a high flexibility for the applied logic and settings, making it useful for experiments other than Double Chooz. The Double Chooz trigger and timing system was installed and commissioned in 2011. This article describes the hardware of the trigger and timing system. Furthermore the setup, implemented trigger logic and performance of the trigger and timing system for the Double Chooz experiment is presented.

Abstract:The Phase-I trigger readout electronics upgrade of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeters enhances the physics reach of the experiment during the upcoming operation at increasing Large Hadron Collider luminosities. The new system, installed during the second Large Hadron Collider Long Shutdown, increases the trigger readout granularity by up to a factor of ten as well as its precision and range. Consequently, the background rejection at trigger level is improved through enhanced filtering algorithms utilizing the additional information for topological discrimination of electromagnetic and hadronic shower shapes. This paper presents the final designs of the new electronic elements, their custom electronic devices, the procedures used to validate their proper functioning, and the performance achieved during the commissioning of this system.

Abstract:Abstract The combined vertexing and tracking performance of the innermost part of the FCC-ee experiments must deliver outstanding precision for measurement of the track momentum together with an impact parameter resolution exceeding by at least a factor five that typically achieved at LHC experiments. Furthermore, precision measurements require stability and fiducial accuracy at a level which is unprecedented in collider experiments. For the innermost vertex layers these goals translate into a target hit resolution of approximately 3 $$\mu \hbox {m}$$ μ m together with a material budget of around 0.2% of a radiation length per layer. Typically this performance might be provided by silicon-based tracking, together with a careful choice of a low-mass cooling technology, and a stable, low-mass mechanical structure capable of providing measurements with a low enough systematic error to match the tremendous statistics expected, particularly for the run around the Z resonance. At FCC-ee, the magnetic field will be limited to approximately 2 T, in order to contain the vertical emittance at the Z pole, and a tracking volume up to relative large radius is needed. The technological solution could be silicon- or gaseous-based tracking, in both cases with the focus on optimising the material budget, and particle identification capability would be an advantage. Depending on the global design, an additional silicon tracking layer could be added at the outer radius of the tracker to provide a final precise point contributing to the momentum or possibly time-of-flight measurement. Current developments in monolithic and hybrid silicon technology, as well as advanced gaseous tracking developments, provide an encouraging road map towards the FCC-ee detector. The current state of the art and potential extensions will be discussed and a generic call for technology which could have a significant impact on the performance of an FCC-ee tracking and vertexing detector is outlined.
