Abstract:Upcycling is becoming increasingly important as it adds value to polymers, contributing to the cre-ation of a circular material society. This study introduces a facile chemical method for converting high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste into valuable long-chain dicarboxylic acids (LCDCAs) via a key enabling unsaturated double-bond formation step. Namely, we propose to introduce unsatu-ration points in HDPE using commercially available heterogeneous catalyst (e.g. Pt/Al2O3). The un-saturation level through C=C double bond formation is around 10%, as confirmed by FTIR, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A microwave-assisted oxidation is demonstrated to break down the treated HDPE to a mixture of aliphatic diacids. This approach enhances the recyclability and value of HDPE by transformation of polymer waste into bifunctional monomers for potentially novel polyester synthesis, showcasing a sustainable and value-added alternative to conventional recycling methods. While the here proposed upcycling process requires optimization in the future, we have estimated E-factor and sEF as an initial indicator of the potential environmental impact of this process.
