Abstract:Multication metal-halide perovskites exhibit desirable performance and stability, compared to their monocation counterparts. However, the study of the photophysical properties and the nature of defect states in these materials is still a challenging and ongoing task. Here, we study bulk and interfacial energy loss mechanisms in solution-processed MAPbI3 (MAPI) and (CsPbI3)0.05[(FAPbI3)0.83(MAPbBr3)0.17]0.95 (triple cation) perovskite solar cells using absolute photoluminescence (PL) measurements. In neat MAPI films, we find a significantly smaller quasi-Fermi level splitting than for the triple cation perovskite absorbers, which defines the open-circuit voltage of the MAPI cells. PL measurements at low temperatures (∼20 K) on MAPI films demonstrate that emissive subgap states can be effectively reduced using different passivating agents, which lowers the nonradiative recombination loss at room temperature. We conclude that while triple cation perovskite cells are limited by interfacial recombination, the passivation of surface trap states within the MAPI films is the primary consideration for device optimization.

Abstract:Direct visualization and quantitative evaluation of charge filling in grain boundary (GB) traps of hybrid metal halide perovskites require dynamic conductivity imaging simultaneously at the terahertz (THz) frequency and nanometer (nm) spatial scales not accessible by conventional transport and imaging methods used thus far. Here, we apply a THz near-field nanoconductivity mapping to the archetypal metal halide perovskite photovoltaic films and demonstrate that it is a powerful tool to reveal distinct dielectric heterogeneity due to charge trapping and degradation at the single GB level. Our approach visualizes the filled defect ion traps by local THz charge conductivity and allows for extracting a quantitative profile of trapping density in the vicinity of GBs with sub-20 nm resolution. Furthermore, imaging material degradation by tracking local nanodefect distributions overtime identifies a distinct degradation pathway that starts from the GBs and propagates inside the grains over time. The single GB, nano-THz conductivity imaging demonstrated here can be extended to benchmark various perovskite materials and devices for their global photoenergy conversion performance and local charge transfer proprieties of absorbers and interfaces.

Abstract:The triple-cation mixed halide perovskite Cs-0.05(MA(0.17)FA(0.83))(0.95)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)(3) emerges as one of the most promising candidates for photovoltaics due to superior optoelectronic properties, but the thermal stability is still a major challenge for the viability of perovskite solar cells towards commercialization. Herein, we firstly explore the thermal response of the photovoltaic performances to access device physical changes. It is shown that the efficiency loss originates from decreased charge mobility, increased trap density and generation of PbI2 charge recombination centers near the interface. In-depth analysis of evolutions in morphology, chemical composition, dynamic and electronic structure of the perovskite layer at the nanometer scales indicates that it is initial dangling bonds and vacancies on the imperfect surfaces decrease the activation energy and cause the perovskite decomposition in a layer-by-layer pathway sequentially from the film surface to bulk. Based on the results, a strategy of surface passivation to improve the thermal stability is demonstrated and discussed. This work for the first time provides insights into the physical and chemical change of such triple-cation perovskite and indicates that more effort should be invested in surface treatment for enhancing perovskite device stability.

Abstract:Thin film photovoltaic cells based on hybrid halide perovskite absorbers have emerged as promising candidates for next generation photovoltaics. Here, we have characterized and identified the defect energy distribution in the CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite using admittance spectroscopy, which reveals a deep defect state similar to 0.16 eV above the valence band. According to theoretical calculations, the defect state is possibly attributed to iodine interstitials (I-i), which can become the non-radiative recombination centers in the absorber.

Abstract:The presence of the PbI2 passivation layers at perovskite crystal grains has been found to considerably affect the charge carrier transport behaviors and device performance of perovskite solar cells. This work demonstrates the application of a novel light-modulated scanning tunneling microscopy (LM-STM) technique to reveal the interfacial electronic structures at the heterointerfaces between CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite crystals and PbI2 passivation layers of individual perovskite grains under light illumination. Most importantly, this technique enabled the first observation of spatially resolved mapping images of photoinduced interfacial band bending of valence bands and conduction bands and the photogenerated electron and hole carriers at the heterointerfaces of perovskite crystal grains. By systematically exploring the interfacial electronic structures of individual perovskite grains, enhanced charge separation and reduced back recombination were observed when an optimal design of interfacial PbI2 passivation layers consisting of a thickness less than 20 nm at perovskite crystal grains was applied.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite solar cells have gained widespread attention due to their high efficiency and high defect tolerance. The absorbing perovskite layer is as a mixed electron-ion conductor that supports high rates of ion and charge transport at room temperature, but the migration of mobile defects can lead to degradation pathways. We combine experimental observations and drift-diffusion modelling to demonstrate a new framework to interpret surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements in perovskite systems and mixed electronic ionic conductors more generally. We conclude that the SPV in mixed electronic ionic conductors can be understood in terms of the change in electric potential at the surface associated with changes in the net charge within the semiconductor system. We show that by modifying the interfaces of perovskite bilayers, we may control defect migration behaviour throughout the perovskite bulk. Our new framework for SPV has broad implications for developing strategies to improve the stability of perovskite devices by controlling defect accumulation at interfaces. More generally, in mixed electronic conductors our framework provides new insights into the behaviour of mobile defects and their interaction with photoinduced charges, which are foundational to physical mechanisms in memristivity, logic, impedance, sensors and energy storage.

Abstract:The competition between corner, edge and face-sharing octahedral networks is a cause of phase inhomogeneity in metal halide perovskite thin-films. Here we probe the charged iodine vacancy distribution and transport at the junction between cubic and hexagonal polytypes of CsPbI$_3$ from first-principles materials modelling. We predict a lower defect formation energy in the face-sharing regions, which correlates with a longer Pb$-$I bond length and causes a million-fold increase in local defect concentration. These defects are predicted to be more mobile in the face-sharing regions with a reduced activation energy for vacancy-mediated diffusion. We conclude that hexagonal phase inclusions or interfaces will act as defect sinks that could trap charges and enhance current-voltage hysteresis in perovskite-based solar cells and electrical devices.

Abstract:In recent years, halide perovskite materials have been used to make high performance solar cell and light-emitting devices. However, material defects still limit device performance and stability. Here, we use synchrotron-based Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging to visualise nanoscale strain fields, such as those local to defects, in halide perovskite microcrystals. Our results demonstrate the dynamic nature of extended defects and strain in halide perovskites and their direct impact on device performance and operational stability.

Abstract:Perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs) have promising prospects to break the efficiency limit of their single-junction solar cells. Wide-bandgap (WBG) perovskite sub cells as an essential component of perovskite TSCs face challenges in achieving high power conversion efficiency due to severe non-radiative charge recombination. Here, we propose an interfacial engineering strategy of sequentially depositing [2-(9 H -carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid and [4-(3,6-dimethyl-9 H -carbazol-9-yl)butyl]phosphonic acid as a hole selective layer, which promotes hole extraction and suppresses the non-radiative recombination at the interface and in the bulk of the perovskite layer. The optimized WBG cells exhibit a remarkable V OC of 1.36 V, resulting in a record low V OC deficit of 0.42 V. Moreover, integrating these WBG perovskite sub cells into all-perovskite tandem cells gives rise to outstanding power conversion efficiencies of 27.34% and 28.05% for two-terminal and four-terminal TSCs, respectively. This research provides a unique perspective for the innovative preparation of highly efficient halide perovskites with high-quality buried interfaces.

Abstract:Deciphering the atomic and electronic structures of interfaces is key to developing state-of-the-art perovskite semiconductors. However, conventional characterization techniques have limited previous studies mainly to grain-boundary interfaces, whereas the intragrain-interface microstructures and their electronic properties have been much less revealed. Herein using scanning transmission electron microscopy, we resolved the atomic-scale structural information on three prototypical intragrain interfaces, unraveling intriguing features clearly different from those from previous observations based on standalone films or nanomaterial samples. These intragrain interfaces include composition boundaries formed by heterogeneous ion distribution, stacking faults resulted from wrongly stacked crystal planes, and symmetrical twinning boundaries. The atomic-scale imaging of these intragrain interfaces enables us to build unequivocal models for the <i>ab initio</i> calculation of electronic properties. Our results suggest that these structure interfaces are generally electronically benign, whereas their dynamic interaction with point defects can still evoke detrimental effects. This work paves the way toward a more complete fundamental understanding of the microscopic structure-property-performance relationship in metal halide perovskites.

Abstract:Halide perovskite solar cells based on CH3NH3PbI3 and related materials have emerged as the most exciting development in the next generation photovoltaic technologies, yet the microscopic phenomena involving photo-carriers, ionic defects, spontaneous polarization, and molecular vibration and rotation interacting with numerous grains, grain boundaries, and interfaces are still inadequately understood. In fact, there is still need for an effective method to interrogate the local photovoltaic properties of halide perovskite solar cells that can be directly traced to their microstructures on one hand and linked to their device performance on the other hand. In this perspective, we propose that scanning probe microscopy techniques have great potential to realize such promises at the nanoscale, and highlight some of the recent progresses and challenges along this line of investigation toward local probing of photocurrent, work function, ionic activities, polarization switching, and chemical degradation. We also emphasize the importance of multi-modality imaging, in-operando scanning, big data analysis, and multidisciplinary collaboration for further studies toward fully understanding of these complex systems.
Managing Interfacial Defects and Carriers by Synergistic Modulation of Functional Groups and Spatial Conformation for High‐Performance Perovskite Photovoltaics based on Vacuum Flash Method

Abstract:Interfacial nonradiative recombination loss is a huge barrier to advance the photovoltaic performance. Here, we propose one effective interfacial defect and carrier dynamics management strategy by synergistic modulation of functional groups and spatial conformation of ammonium salt molecules. The surface treatment with 3‐ammonium propionic acid iodide (3‐APAI) does not form 2D perovskite passivation layer while the propylammonium ions and 5‐aminopentanoic acid hydroiodide post‐treatment lead to the formation of 2D perovskite passivation layers. Due to appropriate alkyl chain length, theoretical and experimental results manifest that ‐COOH and ‐NH3+ groups in 3‐APAI molecules can form coordination bonding with undercoordinated Pb2+ and ionic bonding and hydrogen bonding with octahedron PbI64−, respectively, which makes both groups be simultaneously firmly anchored on the surface of perovskite films. This would strengthen defect passivation effect and improve interfacial carrier transport and transfer. The synergistic effect of functional groups and spatial conformation confers 3‐APAI better defect passivation effect than 2D perovskite layers. The 3‐APAI modified device based on vacuum flash technology achieves an alluring peak efficiency of 24.72% (certified 23.68%), which is among highly efficient devices fabricated without antisolvents. Furthermore, the encapsulated 3‐APAI‐modified device degrades by less than 4% after 1400 h of continuous one sun illumination. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:The surface properties including both defect-modified and surface functionalization by dipolar molecules has a significant influence on the dynamics of charge carriers within metal halide perovskites (MHPs), which is crucial for achieving highly efficient and stable optoelectronic devices. Herein, we considered the sulfobetaine (SFB) as a model structure of dipolar molecular stabilizer, and systematically explored the surface defects and SFB passivation to regulate geometrical/electronic structures of perovskites, as well as its impact on spatial separation of photogenerated carriers by first-principles calculations. We further utilized time-dependent ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics to simulate the photogenerated carrier dynamical behavior and elucidate the exact influence of surface iodine vacancy and SFB passivators have in tuning excited state lifetime. These theoretical results provide insight into physical mechanism behind defect passivation via dipolar stabilizers, promising routes towards improved optoelectronic applications for MHPs.

Abstract:Defect passivation is a challenging issue in vapor‐deposited perovskite solar cells. Herein, the molten salts vapor deposition of FAPbI 3 thin‐film solar cell by RbCl and PbI 2 is reported. It is found that the introduction of RbCl suppresses the generation of uncoordinated Pb atom, and improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) to 20.16% with improved stability. Terahertz scattering‐type scanning near‐filed optical microscopy (THz s‐SNOM) technique reveals that randomly distributed defects on the control sample is passivated in the Rb‐passivated sample, with only a few restricted in the grain boundaries (GBs). In situ imaging of the accelerated degradation reveals a reverse defect generation behavior on the grains before the phase transition. In the results, it is helped to understand the passivation mechanism on the vapor‐deposited solar cells, and THz s‐SNOM is revealed as a powerful technique for nanoscale investigation in perovskite devices.

Abstract:Halide perovskites are promising candidate materials for the next generation high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Since perovskites are electronic-ionic mixed conductors, ion dynamics have a critical impact on the performance and stability of perovskite-based applications. However, comprehensively understanding ionic dynamics is challenging, particularly on nanoscale imaging of ionic dynamics in perovskites. In this review, mobile ion dynamics in halide perovskites investigated via luminescence spectroscopy combined with confocal microscopy are discussed, including mobile ion induced fluorescence quenching, phase segregation in mixed halide hybrid perovskite, and mobile ion accumulation at the interface in perovskite devices. Steady-state and time-resolved luminescence imaging techniques, combined with confocal microscopy, are unique tools for probing ionic dynamics in perovskites, providing invaluable insights on ionic dynamics in nanoscale resolution, along with a wide temporal range from picoseconds to hours. The works in this review are not only for understanding mobile ions to improve the design of perovskite-based devices but also foster the development of microspectroscopic methodologies in a broader solid-state physics context of investigating ionic transports in polycrystalline materials.
Direct Observation of Intragrain Defect Elimination in FAPbI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells by Two-Dimensional PEA 2 PbI 4

Abstract:Two-dimensional perovskites have widely been used to improve the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells and are generally believed to passivate defects at the grain boundaries of three-dimensional perovskites. Herein, we studied introducing various combinations of two-dimensional phenyl ethylammonium lead iodide (PEA2PbI4) and methylammonium chloride (MACl) to the formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) precursor solution. Ultralow dose selected area electron diffraction studies prove that the high density of intragrain planar defects in FAPbI3 can be strongly reduced by adding PEA2PbI4 and fully eliminated by adding further MACl. Although PEA+ is too large to incorporate into FAPbI3, PEA2PbI4 not only improves crystallization but also suppresses intragrain defect formation. As a result, a longer charge carrier lifetime, higher photoluminescence quantum yield, lower Urbach energy, and current–voltage hysteresis are achieved, resulting in a champion PCE of 23.69%, with an improvement of humidity stability.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) has attracted a great deal of interest with respect to diverse optoelectronic devices. However, the photophysical properties of the OIHP require further understanding because most of the investigations have been conducted with polycrystalline perovskites, which contain high-density structural defects. Here, diverse photophysical properties, including structural characterization, spectroscopic features, and photoexcited products, are studied in submicrometer CH3NH3PbBr3 ultrathin single-crystal (UTSC) films. Unlike polycrystalline films and large single crystals, the UTSC film provides a unique platform for studying spectroscopic characteristics of single-crystal perovskites. Compared with the polycrystalline film, the UTSC film presents an atomically flat morphology and near-perfect lattice with a lower defect density, leading to an isotropic system that can be applied in the construction of high-performance optoelectronic devices. Furthermore, a long lifetime emissive channel assigned to the trion is indicated, which is scarcely found in perovskite polycrystalline films. Our results profoundly improve our understanding of their photophysical properties and expand the horizons for perovskite materials in photonic applications.
