Abstract:Different definitions of integrability, as a rule, use linearization of initial equation and/or expansion on some basic functions which are themselves solutions of some linear differential equation. Important fact here is that linearization of some differential equation is its simplification but not solving yet. For instance, in case of linear Schroedinger equation, we are not able to find its solutions explicitly but only to name them Jost functions and to exploit their useful properties (see previous Chapters). On the other hand, well-known fact is that for LODE with constant coefficients operator itself can always be factorized into first-order factors and thus the problem is reduced to the solving of a few first-order LODEs which are solvable in quadratures. In case of differential operators with variable coefficients factorization is not always possible but for the great number of operators BK-factorization gives factorization conditions explicitly which we are going to demonstrate in this Chapter. BK factorization is used to construct set of invariants for LPDO of arbitrary order; interconnections of these new invariants with classic Laplace invariants for second order hyperbolic LPDOs are discussed.

Abstract:An alternative concept of the basic invariants is introduced. The Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is extended to obtain a generalized invariant formulation. The formulation is then used to establish four facts: (i) Any invariant for a quantum system can be constructed in terms of the basic invariants. (ii) It is possible to introduce a solution-generating technique by making use of the basic invariants. (iii) The path integral in the generalized invariant formulation reduces to an ordinary integral. (iv) The study of noncyclic evolution of a quantum system reduces explicitly to the study of the cyclic evolution. Finally, phase factors and general solution for the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator are studied as an illustrative example.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) characterizations of fractional-order linear systems. Based on the generalized Kalman-Yakubovic-Popov (KYP) lemma, two bounded real lemmas of fractional-order linear systems are introduced with respect to two different norms respectively. Then an new bounded real lemma is proposed with more degrees of freedom. In terms of a set of LMIs then, it is generalized for a class of fractional-order uncertain linear systems with the convex polytopic uncertainties, which forms less conservative constraints on ℋ∞ performance. Finally this result is demonstrated in a numerical example.

Abstract:Given a right factor and a left factor of a Linear Partial Differential Operator (LPDO), under which conditions we can refine these two-factor factorizations into one three-factor factorization? This problem is solved for LPDOs of arbitrary order and number of variables. A more general result for the incomplete factorizations of LPDOs is proved as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an SL(n)-invariant division of SL(n)-invariant polynomials by establishing an admissible order among the invariant polynomials in normal form. The invariant division leads to an invariant Gröbner basis theory. The invariant division is closely related to multivariate coordinate polynomial division. This feature leads to a proof of the result that if f1,..., fk are SL(n,K)-invariant where K is an arbitrary field, possibly of positive characteristic, then the invariant ideal generated by them is the intersection of the ideal generated by the fi in the polynomial ring of coordinates with the algebra of invariants.

Abstract:In this paper we review the parallel solution of sparse linear systems, usually deriving by the discretization of ODE-IVPs or ODE-BVPs. The approach is based on the concept of parallel factorization of a (block) tridiagonal matrix. This allows to obtain efficient parallel extensions of many known matrix factorizations, and to derive, as a by-product, a unifying approach to the parallel solution of ODEs.

Abstract:Parametric factorizations of linear partial operators on the plane are considered for operators of orders two, three and four. The operators are assumed to have a completely factorable symbol. It is proved that ``irreducible'' parametric factorizations may exist only for a few certain types of factorizations. Examples are given of the parametric families for each of the possible types. For the operators of orders two and three, it is shown that any factorization family is parameterized by a single univariate function (which can be a constant function).

Abstract:We consider using the preconditioned-Krylov subspace method to solve the system of linear equations with a three-by-three block structure. By making use of the three-by-three block structure, eight inexact block factorization preconditioners, which can be put into a same theoretical analysis frame, are proposed based on a kind of inexact factorization. By generalizing Bendixson Theorem and developing a unified technique of spectral equivalence, the bounds of the real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are obtained. The comparison to eleven existed exact and inexact preconditioners shows that three of the proposed preconditioners can lead to high-speed and effective preconditioned-GMRES in most tests.

Abstract:We give proofs of QR factorization, Cholesky's factorization, and LDU factorization using the inverse function theorem. As a consequence, we obtain analytic dependence of these matrix factorizations which does not follow immediately using Gaussian elimination.

Abstract:Many application problems that lead to solving linear systems make use of preconditioned Krylov subspace solvers to compute their solution. Among the most popular preconditioning approaches are incomplete factorization methods either as single-level approaches or within a multilevel framework. We will present a block incomplete factorization that is based on skillfully blocking the system initially and throughout the factorization. This approach allows for the use of cache-optimized dense matrix kernels such as level-3 BLAS or LAPACK. We will demonstrate how this block approach outperforms the scalar method often by orders of magnitude on modern architectures, paving the way for its prospective use inside various multilevel incomplete factorization approaches or other applications where the core part relies on an incomplete factorization.

Abstract:The paper provides a coherent presentation of an operator scheme, which is used in an approach to inverse problems of mathematical physics (the boundary control method). The scheme is based on the triangular factorization of operators. It not only solves inverse problems but provides the functional models of a class of symmetric semi-bounded operators. The class is characterized in the terms of an evolutionary dynamical system associated with the operator.

Abstract:One of the features of Baxter's Q-operators for many closed spin chain models is that all transfer matrices arise as products of two Q-operators with shifts in the spectral parameter. In the representation-theoretical approach to Q-operators, underlying this is a factorization formula for L-operators (solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation associated to particular infinite-dimensional representations). To extend such a formalism to open spin chains, one needs a factorization identity for solutions of the reflection equation (boundary Yang–Baxter equation) associated to these representations. In the case of quantum affine and diagonal K-matrices, we derive such an identity using the recently formulated theory of universal K-matrices for quantum affine algebras.

Abstract:Representations of vertex operator algebras define sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks on moduli of stable pointed curves. Assuming certain finiteness and semisimplicity conditions, we prove that such sheaves satisfy the factorization conjecture and consequently are vector bundles. Factorization is essential to a recursive formulation of invariants, like ranks and Chern classes, and to produce new constructions of rational conformal field theories and cohomological field theories.

Abstract:The manuscript presents the $LU$ approach to matrix biorthogonal polynomials when all the even ordered entries in the Gram matrix are zero. This arises in case of a quadratic transformation which is briefly discussed. Further, the main diagonal of the Gram matrix is a zero diagonal and we present the theory that follows from this fact. Precisely, we discuss the Christoffel transformation and matrix representations of the kernel polynomials, usually called the ABC Theorem. Finally, we provide an illustration of our results assuming the Gram matrix has Hankel symmetry.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Banach space with a basis $(e_k)_k$ and biorthogonals $(e^\ast_k)_k$. An operator on $X$ is said to have a $\textit {large diagonal}$ if $\inf\limits_{k} |e_k^\ast(T(e_k))| > 0$. The basis $(e_k)_k$ is said to have the $\textit {factorization property}$ if the identity factors through any operator with a large diagonal. Under the assumption that the Rademacher sequence is weakly null, we study the factorization property of the Haar system in a Haar system space. A Haar system space is the completion of the span of characteristic functions of dyadic intervals with respect to a rearrangement invariant norm. We show that every bounded operator with a large diagonal on a Haar system space is approximatively a factor of some diagonal operator with a large diagonal. Moreover, when the Haar system is an unconditional basis for a Haar system space, it has the factorization property.
