Abstract:Satellite-based remote sensing enables detection and mitigation of large point sources of climate-warming methane. These satellites will have the greatest impact if stakeholders have a clear-eyed assessment of their capabilities. We performed a single-blind test of nine methane-sensing satellites from three continents and five countries, including both commercial and government satellites. Over 2 months, we conducted 82 controlled methane releases during satellite overpasses. Six teams analyzed the resulting data, producing 134 estimates of methane emissions. Of these, 80 (58 %) were correctly identified, with 46 true positive detections (34 %) and 34 true negative non-detections (25 %). There were 41 false negatives, in which teams missed a true emission, and 0 false positives, in which teams incorrectly claimed methane was present. All eight satellites that were given a nonzero emission detected methane at least once, including the first single-blind evaluation of the EnMAP, Gaofen 5, and Ziyuan 1 systems. In percent terms, quantification error across all satellites and teams is similar to aircraft-based methane remote sensing systems, with 55 % of mean estimates falling within ± 50 % of the metered value. Although teams correctly detected emissions as low as 0.03 metric tons of methane per hour, it is unclear whether detection performance in this test is representative of real-world field performance. Full retrieval fields submitted by all teams suggest that in some cases it may be difficult to distinguish true emissions from background artifacts without a known source location. Cloud interference is significant and appears to vary across teams and satellites. This work confirms the basic efficacy of the tested satellite systems in detecting and quantifying methane, providing additional insight into detection limits and informing experimental design for future satellite-focused controlled methane release testing campaigns.

Abstract:_ The use of satellite imaging to verify self-reporting of methane emissions using empirical data gathered in near-real time by artificial intelligence, could cost the fossil fuel industry dearly in fines under the new methane provisions of the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Signed into law in August, the IRA requires the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to adopt within 2 years methods to monitor and collect empirical data on methane emissions. The act introduces the federal government’s first-ever tax on greenhouse gas emissions, but does not specify preferred technologies. Satellite monitoring is assumed to be at the top of the list, according to geo-analytics company Kayrros. Private industry can, and likely will, play the same game, as it has access to the very technologies the government uses and can invest to acquire empirical data to identify problems companies might not even know they have. Once emissions are quantified at their source, industry can clean up supply chains and thus blunt the financial impact of penalties set to debut in 2024. Third-Party Audits: Good for ESG Optics but Missing the Bigger Issue In May, ExxonMobil announced it had become the first oil and gas company to earn an “A” grade certification under the independent MiQ standard for managing methane emissions from associated gas at its Poker Lake, New Mexico, facilities which the company said in 2021 accounted for more than 10% of its Permian Basin gas production. Responsible Energy Solutions, a Texas-based independent auditor in the field of Responsibly Sourced Gas (RSG), conducted the study. One month later, Chevron announced it had earned top marks from Denver-based Project Canary, an SaaS-based (software-as-a-service) data analytics company organized as a public benefit corporation which markets itself as the gold standard for independent RSG audits. It uses its own monitoring devices and does not run data through the client’s SCADA system. Gas producers are turning to third-party audits to differentiate their production streams as RSG to comply with the investment community’s ESG (environment, social, and corporate governance) requirements. In a study issued a year ago, the global research and business consultancy Wood Mackenzie referred to RSG certification as a “nascent” industry (audit companies tend to be innovation-driven data analytic startups) and noted that “certification processes exist (currently) only for upstream assets and there is no universal or industry standard.” “Certification is based on standards such as air emissions, water stewardship, land use, and community impacts,” Wood Mackenzie reported. “RSG differs from normally produced natural gas in that producers take extra steps to reduce their carbon footprint, mitigate emissions, and minimize environmental and social impacts.” RSG certification monitoring might collect empirical data—which is a start—but it is largely at pad level, ignoring the bigger and more ominous picture that can be assessed only from space. That bigger picture is what the EPA will turn to when it begins to levy its methane tax in 2024 and it is why the industry is starting to look “up” as well. Drone surveys are widening the view. A paper presented at the 2021 SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) detailed how BP conducted the first methane emissions survey of an offshore facility with a miniature methane spectrometer onboard a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (SPE 206181).

Abstract:Abstract Satellites are increasingly seen as a tool for identifying large greenhouse gas point sources for mitigation, but independent verification of satellite performance is needed for acceptance and use by policy makers and stakeholders. We conduct to our knowledge the first single-blind controlled methane release testing of satellite-based methane emissions detection and quantification, with five independent teams analyzing data from one to five satellites each for this desert-based test. Teams correctly identified 71% of all emissions, ranging from 0.20 [0.19, 0.21] metric tons per hour (t/h) to 7.2 [6.8, 7.6] t/h. Three-quarters (75%) of quantified estimates fell within ± 50% of the metered value, comparable to airplane-based remote sensing technologies. The relatively wide-area Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 satellites detected emissions as low as 1.4 [1.3, 1.5, 95% confidence interval] t/h, while GHGSat’s targeted system quantified a 0.20 [0.19, 0.21] t/h emission to within 13%. While the fraction of global methane emissions detectable by satellite remains unknown, we estimate that satellite networks could see 19–89% of total oil and natural gas system emissions detected in a recent survey of a high-emitting region.

Abstract:The twin Sentinel-3 satellites have multi-band radiometers which observe in methane-sensitive shortwave infrared bands with daily global coverage and 500 m ground pixel resolution. We investigate the methane observation capability of Sentinel-3 and how its coverage-resolution combination fits between Sentinel-5p and Sentinel-2 within a tiered observation approach for methane leak monitoring. Sentinel-5p measures methane with high precision and daily global coverage, allowing worldwide leak detection but with a coarse spatial resolution of 7 km x 5.5 km. The Sentinel-2 twin satellites have multi-band instruments that can identify source locations of major leaks (> 1 t/h) with their methane observations of 20 m resolution under favorable observational conditions, but these satellites lack daily global coverage We show that methane enhancements can be retrieved from the shortwave infrared band measurements of Sentinel-3. We report the lowest emission detections by Sentinel-3 in the 8-20 t/h range, depending on location and wind conditions. We demonstrate Sentinel-3's capability of identification and monitoring of methane leaks using two case studies. Near Moscow, Sentinel-3 shows that two major short-term leaks, separated by 30 km, occurred simultaneously at a gas pipeline and appear as a single methane plume in Sentinel-5p data. For another Sentinel-5p leak detection near the Hassi Messaoud oil/gas field in Algeria, Sentinel-3 identifies the leaking facility emitting continuously for 6 days, and Sentinel-2 pinpoints the source of the leak at an oil/gas well. Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 also show the 6-day leak was followed by a four-month period of burning of the leaking gas, suggesting a gas well blowout to be the cause of the leak.

Abstract:The ability to detect and quantify methane emissions from offshore platforms is of considerable interest in providing actionable feedback to industrial operators. While satellites offer a distinctive advantage for remote sensing of offshore platforms which may otherwise be difficult to reach, offshore measurements of methane from satellite instruments in the shortwave infrared are challenging due to the low levels of diffuse sunlight reflected from water surfaces. Here, we use the GHGSat satellite constellation in a sun glint configuration to detect and quantify methane emissions from offshore targets around the world. We present a variety of examples of offshore methane plumes, including the largest single emission at (84 000 ± 24 000) kg h −1 observed by GHGSat from the Nord Stream 2 pipeline leak in 2022 and the smallest offshore emission measured from space at (180 ± 130) kg h −1 in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, we provide an overview of the constellation's offshore measurement capabilities. We measure a median column precision of 2.1 % of the background methane column density and estimate a detection limit, from analytical modelling and orbital simulations, that varies between 160 and 600 kg h −1 depending on the latitude and season.

Abstract:Monitoring methane emissions from oil and gas facilities requires the combination of several technologies to gain a full understanding of the challenge at a manageable cost. The integration of frequent and affordable high resolution satellite measurements to find the larger leaks with less frequent, but more expensive, aerial surveys, forms the basis of a tiered monitoring system showing great promise to optimise leak detection and repair activities. In this extended abstract, examples of methane emissions measurements from controlled releases and at oil and gas facilities acquired with both GHGSat’s second satellite, Iris (launched in September 2020) and the airborne variant of the same sensor are presented. While the combination of different technologies is not uncommon, this system is the first in the world utilising the same sensor at two different altitudes. The performance parameters of each system are highlighted and supported with recent examples. In addition, the advantages of the hybrid system will be discussed, including the opportunity for cross-validation of measurements. Finally, the potential of such a system to be used for regulatory reporting purposes will be discussed and contrasted to the standard of performing optical gas imaging camera campaigns three times a year used in some jurisdictions, notably in Canada and the United States.

Abstract:The global methane pledge paves a fresh, critical way toward carbonneutrality. However, it remains largely invisible and highly controversialdue to the fact that planet-scale and plant-level methane retrievals haverarely been coordinated. This has never been more essential within thenarrow window to reach the Paris target. Here we present a two-tieredspaceborne architecture to address this issue. Using this framework, wefocused on the United States, China, the Middle East, and North Africa, andsimultaneously uncovered methane-abundant regions and plumes. These includenew super-emitters, potential leakages, and unprecedented multiple plumes ina single source. More importantly, this framework is shown to challengeofficial emission reports that possibly mislead estimates from global,regional, and site scales, particularly by missing super-emitters. Ourresults show that, in principle, the above framework can be extended to bemulti-tiered by adding upcoming stereoscopic measurements and suitableartificial intelligence, and thus it is sufficiently versatile for immediateand future monitoring of the global methane pledge.

Abstract:Rapid identification of anomalous methane sources in oil/gas fields could enable corrective action to fight climate change. The GHGSat‐D satellite instrument measuring atmospheric methane with 50‐meter spatial resolution was launched in 2016 to demonstrate space‐based monitoring of methane point sources. Here we report the GHGSat‐D discovery of an anomalously large, persistent methane source (10‐43 tons h ‐1 , detected in over 50% of observations) at a gas compressor station in Central Asia, together with additional sources (4‐32 tons h ‐1 ) nearby. The TROPOMI satellite instrument confirms the magnitude of these large emissions going back to at least November 2017. We estimate that these sources released 142 ± 34 kilotons of methane to the atmosphere from February 2018 through January 2019, comparable to the four‐month total emission from the well‐documented Aliso Canyon blowout.

Abstract:Mitigating methane emissions is the fastest way to stop global warming in the short-term and buy humanity time to decarbonise. Despite the demonstrated ability of remote sensing instruments to detect methane plumes, no system has been available to routinely monitor and act on these events. We present MARS-S2L, an automated AI-driven methane emitter monitoring system for Sentinel-2 and Landsat satellite imagery deployed operationally at the United Nations Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory. We compile a global dataset of thousands of super-emission events for training and evaluation, demonstrating that MARS-S2L can skillfully monitor emissions in a diverse range of regions globally, providing a 216% improvement in mean average precision over a current state-of-the-art detection method. Running this system operationally for six months has yielded 457 near-real-time detections in 22 different countries of which 62 have already been used to provide formal notifications to governments and stakeholders.

Autonomous Detection of Methane Emissions in Multispectral Satellite Data Using Deep Learning

Abstract:Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, and its short atmospheric half-life makes it a prime target to rapidly curb global warming. However, current methane emission monitoring techniques primarily rely on approximate emission factors or self-reporting, which have been shown to often dramatically underestimate emissions. Although initially designed to monitor surface properties, satellite multispectral data has recently emerged as a powerful method to analyze atmospheric content. However, the spectral resolution of multispectral instruments is poor, and methane measurements are typically very noisy. Methane data products are also sensitive to absorption by the surface and other atmospheric gases (water vapor in particular) and therefore provide noisy maps of potential methane plumes, that typically require extensive human analysis. Here, we show that the image recognition capabilities of deep learning methods can be leveraged to automatize the detection of methane leaks in Sentinel-2 satellite multispectral data, with dramatically reduced false positive rates compared with state-of-the-art multispectral methane data products, and without the need for a priori knowledge of potential leak sites. Our proposed approach paves the way for the automated, high-definition and high-frequency monitoring of point-source methane emissions across the world.

Abstract:Imaging spectroscopy, also known as hyperspectral imaging, is a remote sensing technique in which images of the solar radiation reflected by the Earth are produced in hundreds of spectral channels between the visible and the shortwave infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum (roughly 400–2500 nm). The 2100-2450 nm spectral window can be used for methane retrievals, as it has been demonstrated over the last years with airborne imaging spectrometers, and very recently also with space-based instruments. Satellite-based hyperspectral images are acquired with a typical spatial sampling for satellite data of 30 m, a spatial coverage between 30x30 and 60x60 km per scene, and a spectral sampling of 10 nm. In this work, we will present an overview of the state-of-the-art of methane mapping with imaging spectroscopy missions. We will review the characteristics of the available missions, the main retrieval approaches, and will present examples of methane emission detection from a number of missions and locations around the Earth.

Abstract:Methane (CH$_4$) is the chief contributor to global climate change. Recent Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) has been very useful in quantitative mapping of methane emissions. Existing methods for analyzing this data are sensitive to local terrain conditions, often require manual inspection from domain experts, prone to significant error and hence are not scalable. To address these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end spectral absorption wavelength aware transformer network, MethaneMapper, to detect and quantify the emissions. MethaneMapper introduces two novel modules that help to locate the most relevant methane plume regions in the spectral domain and uses them to localize these accurately. Thorough evaluation shows that MethaneMapper achieves 0.63 mAP in detection and reduces the model size (by 5x) compared to the current state of the art. In addition, we also introduce a large-scale dataset of methane plume segmentation mask for over 1200 AVIRIS-NG flight lines from 2015-2022. It contains over 4000 methane plume sites. Our dataset will provide researchers the opportunity to develop and advance new methods for tackling this challenging green-house gas detection problem with significant broader social impact. Abstract:Abstract Methane is a strong greenhouse gas, with a higher radiative forcing per unit mass and shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide. The remote sensing of methane in regions of industrial activity is a key step toward the accurate monitoring of emissions that drive climate change. Whilst the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on board the Sentinal-5P satellite is capable of providing daily global measurement of methane columns, data are often compromised by cloud cover. Here, we develop a statistical model which uses nitrogen dioxide concentration data from TROPOMI to efficiently predict values of methane columns, expanding the average daily spatial coverage of observations of the Permian basin from 16% to 88% in the year 2019. The addition of predicted methane abundances at locations where direct observations are not available will support inversion methods for estimating methane emission rates at shorter timescales than is currently possible.

Abstract:Abstract. We review the capability of current and scheduled satelliteobservations of atmospheric methane in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) toquantify methane emissions from the global scale down to point sources. Wecover retrieval methods, precision and accuracy requirements, inverse andmass balance methods for inferring emissions, source detection thresholds,and observing system completeness. We classify satellite instruments as areaflux mappers and point source imagers, with complementary attributes. Areaflux mappers are high-precision (<1 %) instruments with 0.1–10 kmpixel size designed to quantify total methane emissions on regional toglobal scales. Point source imagers are fine-pixel (<60 m)instruments designed to quantify individual point sources by imaging of theplumes. Current area flux mappers include GOSAT (2009–present), whichprovides a high-quality record for interpretation of long-term methanetrends, and TROPOMI (2018–present), which provides global continuous dailymapping to quantify emissions on regional scales. These instruments alreadyprovide a powerful resource to quantify national methane emissions insupport of the Paris Agreement. Current point source imagers include theGHGSat constellation and several hyperspectral and multispectral landimaging sensors (PRISMA, Sentinel-2, Landsat-8/9, WorldView-3), withdetection thresholds in the 100–10 000 kg h−1 range that enablemonitoring of large point sources. Future area flux mappers, includingMethaneSAT, GOSAT-GW, Sentinel-5, GeoCarb, and CO2M, will increase thecapability to quantify emissions at high resolution, and the MERLIN lidarwill improve observation of the Arctic. The averaging times required by areaflux mappers to quantify regional emissions depend on pixel size, retrievalprecision, observation density, fraction of successful retrievals, andreturn times in a way that varies with the spatial resolution desired. Asimilar interplay applies to point source imagers between detectionthreshold, spatial coverage, and return time, defining an observing systemcompleteness. Expanding constellations of point source imagers includingGHGSat and Carbon Mapper over the coming years will greatly improveobserving system completeness for point sources through dense spatialcoverage and frequent return times.

Abstract:As the second most predominant greenhouse gas, methane-targeted emission mitigation holds the potential to decelerate the pace of global warming. Satellite remote sensing is an important monitoring tool, and we review developments in the satellite detection of methane. This paper provides an overview of the various types of satellites, including the various instrument parameters, and describes the different types of satellite retrieval algorithms. In addition, the currently popular methane point source quantification method is presented. Based on existing research, we delineate the classification of methane remote sensing satellites into two overarching categories: area flux mappers and point source imagers. Area flux mappers primarily concentrate on the assessment of global or large-scale methane concentrations, with a further subclassification into active remote sensing satellites (e.g., MERLIN) and passive remote sensing satellites (e.g., TROPOMI, GOSAT), contingent upon the remote sensing methodology employed. Such satellites are mainly based on physical models and the carbon dioxide proxy method for the retrieval of methane. Point source imagers, in contrast, can detect methane point source plumes using their ultra-high spatial resolution. Subcategories within this classification include multispectral imagers (e.g., Sentinel-2, Landsat-8) and hyperspectral imagers (e.g., PRISMA, GF-5), contingent upon their spectral resolution disparities. Area flux mappers are mostly distinguished by their use of physical algorithms, while point source imagers are dominated by data-driven methods. Furthermore, methane plume emissions can be accurately quantified through the utilization of an integrated mass enhancement model. Finally, a prediction of the future trajectory of methane remote sensing satellites is presented, in consideration of the current landscape. This paper aims to provide basic theoretical support for subsequent scientific research.

Satellite‐Based Surveys Reveal Substantial Methane Point‐Source Emissions in Major Oil & Gas Basins of North America During 2022–2023

Abstract:Abstract Utilizing imaging spectroscopy technology to identify methane super‐emitters plays a vital role in mitigating methane emissions in the Oil & Gas (O&G) sector. While earlier research has uncovered significant point‐source methane emissions from O&G production in the US and Canada, which are key regions with large methane emissions, a comprehensive post‐COVID‐19 survey has been notably absent. Here, we perform a detailed survey of methane super‐emitters across multiple basins of North America (Marcellus Shale, Haynesville/Bossier Shale, Permian Basin and Montney Shale) using the new Chinese Gaofen5‐01A/02 (GF5‐01A/02) satellite measurements during 2022–2023. We detect 139 individual methane plumes emanating from 122 point sources, with flux rates ranging from 519 to 16,071 kg hr −1 . These emissions exhibit a highly skewed and heavy‐tailed distribution, constituting approximately 23% of the flux inversion with TROPOMI in the sample region, with a range of 13%–40%. Moreover, we observe a 66.7% reduction in methane emissions in Permian Basin during COVID‐19, followed by fluctuations until spring 2023. By summer 2023, methane emissions rebound to twice their previous magnitude (1.68 ± 0.58 Tg a −1 ). Using these point‐source surveys, we further quantify a regional methane emission of 2.69 ± 0.86 Tg a −1 in Permian Basin. This estimation closely aligns with top‐down inversions (2.22 ± 0.40 Tg a −1 ) from TROPOMI. The upscale estimation underscores the effectiveness of high‐resolution remote sensing measurements in improving bottom‐up emissions inventories and refining regional methane emission assessments. Our results highlight the potential climate benefits derived from regular monitoring and specific remediation efforts focused on relatively few strong point‐source emissions.

Abstract:The Permian Basin is known for its extensive oil and gas production, which has increased rapidly in recent years becoming the largest producing basin in the United States. It is also responsible for almost half of the methane emissions from all oil and gas producing regions in the country. Given the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is crucial to identify and characterize the point sources of emissions. To this end, we have combined three new high-resolution hyperspectral sensors data onboard the GF-5, ZY1 and PRIMA satellites to create the first regional study to identify methane sources and measure the emitted quantities from each source. With data collected over several days in 2019 and 2020, we have identified a total of 37 point source emissions with flux rates >500kg/h, that is, a high concentration of extreme emission point sources that account for nearly 40% of the Permian annual emissions. Also, we have found that new infrastructure (post-2018) is responsible for almost 60% of the detected emissions, in many cases (21% of the cases) due to inefficient use of flaring of the gas that they cannot store. With this study, we demonstrate that hyperspectral satellite data are a powerful tool for the detection and quantification of strong methane point emissions.
First validation of high-resolution satellite-derived methane emissions from an active gas leak in the UK

Abstract:Atmospheric methane (CH 4 ) is the second-most-important anthropogenic greenhouse gas and has a 20-year global warming potential 82 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Anthropogenic sources account for ∼ 60 % of global CH 4 emissions, of which 20 % come from oil and gas exploration, production and distribution. High-resolution satellite-based imaging spectrometers are becoming important tools for detecting and monitoring CH 4 point source emissions, aiding mitigation. However, validation of these satellite measurements, such as those from the commercial GHGSat satellite constellation, has so far not been documented for active leaks. Here we present the monitoring and quantification, by GHGSat's satellites, of the CH 4 emissions from an active gas leak from a downstream natural gas distribution pipeline near Cheltenham, UK, in the spring and summer of 2023 and provide the first validation of the satellite-derived emission estimates using surface-based mobile greenhouse gas surveys. We also use a Lagrangian transport model, the UK Met Office's Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modelling Environment (NAME), to estimate the flux from both satellite- and ground-based observation methods and assess the leak's contribution to observed concentrations at a local tall tower site (30 km away). We find GHGSat's emission estimates to be in broad agreement with those made from the in situ measurements. During the study period (March–June 2023) GHGSat's emission estimates are 236–1357 kg CH 4 h −1 , whereas the mobile surface measurements are 634–846 kg CH 4 h −1 . The large variability is likely down to variations in flow through the pipe and engineering works across the 11-week period. Modelled flux estimates in NAME are 181–1243 kg CH 4 h −1 , which are lower than the satellite- and mobile-survey-derived fluxes but are within the uncertainty. After detecting the leak in March 2023, the local utility company was contacted, and the leak was fixed by mid-June 2023. Our results demonstrate that GHGSat's observations can produce flux estimates that broadly agree with surface-based mobile measurements. Validating the accuracy of the information provided by targeted, high-resolution satellite monitoring shows how it can play an important role in identifying emission sources, including unplanned fugitive releases that are inherently challenging to identify, track, and estimate their impact and duration. Rapid, widespread access to such data to inform local action to address fugitive emission sources across the oil and gas supply chain could play a significant role in reducing anthropogenic contributions to climate change.
