Abstract:Research in atomic and molecular collision processes and spectral line broadening has been very active since our last report, Peach, Dimitrijevic & Stancil 2009. Given the large volume of the published literature and the limited space available, we have attempted to identify work most relevant to astrophysics. Since our report can not be comprehensive, additional publications can be found in the databases at the web addresses listed in the final section. Elastic and inelastic collisions among electrons, atoms, ions, and molecules are included and charge transfer can be very important in collisions between heavy particles.

Abstract:This perspective review focuses on the results of an internally consistent study centered on the fundamental interaction components determining the formation of weak intermolecular hydrogen (HB) and halogen (HX) bonds at large intermolecular distances, as developed in the Perugia molecular beam laboratory. This investigation exploits old and novel molecular beam scattering experiments in several gaseous prototypical systems. In particular, we focus on the kinetic energy dependence of the total (elastic + inelastic) integral cross-sections. Of particular interest is the measure of quantum interference patterns in the energy dependence of targeted systems and their shift with respect to known reference systems. We interpreted these findings in terms of interaction energy stabilization components, such as charge transfer, σ-hole, and polar flattening, that emerge at specific separation distance ranges and that selectively manifest for specific geometries of the collision complexes. Another significant observable we discuss is the absolute value of the cross-section and its dependence on permanent multipole moments of the collisional partners. Specifically, we show how the spontaneous orientation of rotationally cold and polar molecules, due to the electric field gradient associated with the permanent multipole moments can lead to significant modification of the magnitude of the total cross-section, even at high values of the impact parameter. We are confident that the present results can help extend the force field formulation to a more extensive variety of interacting systems and carry out molecular dynamics simulations under conditions of application interest.

Hard processes in multi-TeV ion collisions

Abstract:Motivated by the ion-collision program at the Large Hadron Collider, plans for its high-luminosity upgrade, and on-going discussions for multi-TeV future hadron colliders, we systematically investigate hard-scattering, Standard Model processes in many-TeV ion-ion collisions. We focus on the symmetric beam configurations $^{208}$Pb-$^{208}$Pb, $^{131}$Xe-$^{131}$Xe, $^{12}$C-$^{12}$C, and $pp$, and we catalog total and fiducial cross sections for dozens of processes, ranging from associated-Higgs and multiboson production to associated-top pair production, at next-to-leading order in QCD for nucleon-nucleon collision energies from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=1$ to $100$ TeV. We report the residual scale uncertainties at this order as well as the uncertainties originating from fits of nuclear parton densities. We also discuss the propagation of nuclear dynamics (as encoded in nuclear parton densities) into parton luminosities, and ultimately into predictions for cross sections. Finally, we report on the emergence of trends and the reliability of extrapolating cross sections across different nuclei.

Abstract:Collisions are of fundamental importance in many relevant physico-chemical phenomena in the gas phase and at the gas-surface interface. Collision-induced energy transfer not only offers a sensitive probe of interatomic interactions, but also impacts an array of processes ranging from transport to reactivity. This perspective highlights some recent advances on collision-induced energy transfer dynamics. In the gas phase, cold collisions revealed remarkable quantum effects and stereodynamics of bimolecular inelastic scattering, which motivated development of new state-to-state quantum scattering methods. For surface processes, experiments of hydrogen atom scattering from various surfaces combined with first-principles molecular dynamics simulations shed valuable light on the relative importance of adiabatic energy transfer to surface phonons and nonadiabatic energy transfer to surface electrons. We outline further challenges in these fields and expect more fruitful interplay between experiment and theory.
Collisional broadening of molecular rovibronic lines

Abstract:To meet burning needs of high-resolution pressure-induced line-shape parameters in the UV/visible regions for hot-temperature industrial and atmospheric applications as well as current and future space missions, phase-shift theory is examined in its historical context, tested and revisited using accurate numerical potentials and advanced trajectory models. First, a general analysis for arbitrary molecular systems is conducted in terms of the dimensionless parameter $\alpha$ determined by the differences of the Lennard-Jones parameters in the final and initial electronic absorber's states. Temperature dependence, use of the power law and influence of Maxwell-Boltzmann averaging over relative velocities are addressed. Then, interaction-potential calculations are attempted for some representative molecular pairs (NO-Ar, NO-N$_2$, OH-Ar and OH-N$_2$) and the isotropic parts are fitted using the 12-6 Lennard-Jones form to get room and high-temperature line-broadening and line-shift coefficients which are compared to available measurements. It is shown that the phase-shift theory in its standard rectilinear-trajectory formulation provides linewidth and shift estimates accurate within 30-40 %. Attempted improvements using numerical potentials and curved trajectories lead to closer matches with measurements for some cases but also worsen the agreement for others. To ensure better theoretical predictions, introduction of correction terms to the usual phase-shift integral is suggested.

Abstract:Initial geometrical distribution and fluctuation can affect the collective expansion in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. This effect may be more evident in small system (such as B + B) than in large one (Pb + Pb). This work presents the collision system dependence of collective flows and discusses about effects on collective flows from initial fluctuations in a framework of a multiphase transport model. The results shed light on system scan on experimental efforts to small system physics.

Abstract:Commission 14 has been operating for almost a century. It was one of the 32 Standing IAU Commissions and established in 1919. The main purpose of Commission 14 is to foster interactions between the astronomical community and those conducting research on atoms, molecules, and solid state particles to provide data vital to reducing and analysing astronomical observations and performing theoretical investigations. Although Commission 14 terminated at the Honolulu General Assembly, the field Atomic and Molecular Data remains with the IAU. By call of the IAU, the Commission 14 OC initiated a proposal for a new Commission on Laboratory Astrophysics that was approved. Commission on Laboratory Astrophysics will be a natural evolution of Commission 14.

Abstract:Besides characteristic target and projectile x rays, x-ray continua and radiative-electron-capture photons are seen in collisions with relativistic heavy ions ranging in energy from 82 to 422 MeV/amu and in atomic number from Xe to U. The angular distribution, centroid energy, cross section, and line shape of the broad radiative-electron-capture lines are analyzed. The observed continua are due to primary- and secondary-electron bremsstrahlung. In the projectile frame, primary bremsstrahlung is the radiative scattering of incident target electrons from the projectile nucleus. The continuum cross sections and angular distributions are calculated, and are compared with experiment. Secondary-electron bremsstrahlung, due to the radiative scattering of ionized target electrons from other target nuclei, is target-thickness dependent, and the cross section increases roughly with the square of the target atomic number. The calculated primary-electron bremsstrahlung cross sections are lower than experiment.
High-precision Cavity-Enhanced Spectroscopy for Studying the H2-Ar Collisions and Interactions.

Abstract:Information about molecular collisions is encoded in the shapes of collision-perturbed molecular resonances. This connection between molecular interactions and line shapes is most clearly seen in simple systems, such as the molecular hydrogen perturbed by a noble gas atom. We study the H2–Ar system by means of highly accurate absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. On the one hand, we use the cavity-ring-down-spectroscopy technique to record the shapes of the S(1) 3-0 line of molecular hydrogen perturbed by argon. On the other hand, we simulate the shapes of this line using ab initio quantum-scattering calculations performed on our accurate H2–Ar potential energy surface (PES). In order to validate the PES and the methodology of quantum-scattering calculations separately from the model of velocity-changing collisions, we measured the spectra in experimental conditions in which the influence of the latter is relatively minor. In these conditions, our theoretical collision-perturbed line shapes reproduce the raw experimental spectra at the percent level. However, the collisional shift, δ0, differs from the experimental value by 20%. Compared to other line-shape parameters, collisional shift displays much higher sensitivity to various technical aspects of the computational methodology. We identify the contributors to this large error and find the inaccuracies of the PES to be the dominant factor. With regard to the quantum scattering methodology, we demonstrate that treating the centrifugal distortion in a simple, approximate manner is sufficient to obtain the percent-level accuracy of collisional spectra.

Abstract:Molecular collisions are manifested as a perturbation of the shapes of molecular optical resonances. Therefore, on the one hand, the line-shape analysis of accurate molecular spectra constitutes an important tool for studying quantum scattering and testing ab initio molecular interactions [1]. On the other hand, the collisional effects can deteriorate the accuracy of atmospheric measurements of the Earth and other planets, modify the opacity of the exoplanetary atmospheres as well as influence the accuracy in optical metrology based on molecular spectroscopy [2,3]. Recently a new relational structure has been introduced to the most extensively-used line-by-line spectroscopic database HITRAN [4,5], enabling the collisional, beyond-Voigt line-shape effects to be represented. It is, however, extremely challenging to populate the entire database with purely experimental parameters for all the molecular transitions and thermodynamical conditions (all the bands, branches and temperature ranges). We demonstrate a new methodology of generating a comprehensive dataset of the beyond-Voigt line-shape parameters from fully ab initio quantum-scattering calculations. We also demonstrate first such a complete dataset for the benchmark system of helium-perturbed H2 line. We provide the temperature dependences for the pressure broadening and shift parameters, as well as for the Dicke parameter using generalized spectroscopic cross sections resulting from quantum scattering calculations on accurate ab initio potential energy surfaces. The results are consistent with the recently adapted HITRAN parameterisation of the Hartmann-Tran profile [4]. Cloud Collision Signatures in the Central Molecular Zone

Abstract:Molecular cloud collisions are a prominent theory for the formation of stars. Observational studies into cloud collisions identify the collision via a bridging feature: a continuous strip of line emission that connects two intensity peaks that are related in position space and separated in velocity space. Currently, most observations of collisions and these bridging features take place in the Milky Way disc. They are also theorized to take place in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), where temperatures and densities are both significantly higher than in the disc. For studies in the Milky Way Disc, the most commonly-used tracer tends to be CO. However, for studies in the CMZ, where the density and temperature are significantly higher, low-J CO lines lose their ability to adequately highlight the bridging feature of cloud collisions. As a result, studies have begun using other tracers, whose physical and chemical behavior has not been studied under CMZ conditions. We perform combined hydrodynamical, chemical and radiative transfer simulations of cloud collisions under both disc- and CMZ-like conditions, and investigate collision signatures in a number of commonly-observed molecular lines. Under the Milky Way disc conditions CO has the standard bridging feature; however, the other tracers, CS, HCO$^+$, N$_2$H$^+$ only emit in the intermediate-velocity bridge region, making the feature itself challenging to detect. In the CMZ, the higher density and temperature make the bridging feature far more indistinct for CO, but the other tracers have morphologically similar bridging features to the CO disc model, validating their use as tracers of cloud collisions under these conditions.

Abstract:In this experimental investigation, collision broadening effects on the Q(J)-branch vibration-inversion-rotation spectral lines of ammonia (NH3) within the fundamental ν 4 asymmetric bending vibrational band in the 6.2 µm mid-IR region are reported. A continuous-wave external-cavity quantum cascade laser coupled with a high-sensitive cavity ring-down spectrometer was employed to selectively probe 10 transitions in high-resolution, including few inversion doublets of gaseous NH3. Pressure-broadening coefficients, γ N H 3 - X i ( X i = He, Ar, N2, O2, zero-air) in cm−1 atm−1, characterizing the collision interaction between NH3 and various external perturbing gases, including helium, argon, nitrogen, oxygen, and zero-air, were determined at room temperature (296 K). Mean collision times and optical collision diameters of each collision partner were explored to gain deeper insight into the perturber-induced collision dynamics. This investigation elucidates the intricate intermolecular interactions and collision phenomena induced by various foreign perturbers with NH3, with potential implications for future spectroscopic and atmospheric research of this polyatomic molecule.

Abstract:Recent advances in theoretical calculations of H-2 dissociation energies and ultra-accurate measurements of H2 transition frequencies give possibilities not only for testing QED and relativistic effects, but also for searching for physics beyond the standard model. In this paper we show that at the level of 10(-4) cm(-1) the uncertainty of the Doppler-limited H-2 line position determination is dominated by collisional line-shape effects. We question the paradigm that the unperturbed transition energy can be determined from linear extrapolation of the line shift to zero pressure.

Abstract:Fully quantum ab initio calculations of the collision-induced shapes of two rovibrational ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ lines perturbed by He provide an unprecedented subpercent agreement with ultra-accurate cavity-enhanced measurements. This level of consistency between theory and experiment hinges on a highly accurate potential energy surface and a realistic treatment of the velocity changing and dephasing collisions. In addition to the fundamental importance, these results show that ab initio calculations can provide reference data for spectroscopic studies of planet atmospheres at the required accuracy level and can be used to populate spectroscopic line-by-line databases.

Abstract:The theory and simulation working group (working group 6) of the third edition of the European Advanced Accelerator Workshop has been characterized by a strong numerical connotation. Particle in cell codes have proven to be a necessary tool to finely investigate the underlying physics both for laser and plasma wakefield acceleration processes. This year, the section has been characterised by an interest in the limitation of the numerical Cherenkov effect, the mitigation of the hose-instability, start-to-end simulations and more generally on new numerical schemes and diagnostics.
