Abstract:The chemical composition of the interstellar medium and planetary atmospheres is constantly in flux as atoms and molecules collide and interact with high-energy particles such as electrons, protons, and photons. These transformative processes ultimately lead to the coalescence of molecules and eventually the birth of stars. Our understanding of these chemical ecosystems relies on models that synthesize data from gas-phase experiments, providing insights into reaction cross sections. This Review examines efforts to delve into the fundamental bond-forming and bond-breaking dynamics that occur during bimolecular and electron-initiated reactions. These experiments involve clever approaches to establish a time reference and the collision geometry necessary for tracking atomic motion with femtosecond time resolution. Findings from these efforts enhance present models and improve predictions for molecule-molecule and electron-molecule collisions.

Abstract:Interstellar space is filled with a dilute mixture of charged particles, atoms, molecules and dust grains, called the interstellar medium (ISM). Understanding its physical properties and dynamical behavior is of pivotal importance to many areas of astronomy and astrophysics. Galaxy formation and evolution, the formation of stars, cosmic nucleosynthesis, the origin of large complex, prebiotic molecules and the abundance, structure and growth of dust grains which constitute the fundamental building blocks of planets, all these processes are intimately coupled to the physics of the interstellar medium. However, despite its importance, its structure and evolution is still not fully understood. Observations reveal that the interstellar medium is highly turbulent, consists of different chemical phases, and is characterized by complex structure on all resolvable spatial and temporal scales. Our current numerical and theoretical models describe it as a strongly coupled system that is far from equilibrium and where the different components are intricately linked together by complex feedback loops. Describing the interstellar medium is truly a multi-scale and multi-physics problem. In these lecture notes we introduce the microphysics necessary to better understand the interstellar medium. We review the relations between large-scale and small-scale dynamics, we consider turbulence as one of the key drivers of galactic evolution, and we review the physical processes that lead to the formation of dense molecular clouds and that govern stellar birth in their interior.

Abstract:The ejecta of evolved stars are among the most efficient chemical laboratories in the Universe. Many of the chemical compounds synthesized in these environments probably travel along the interstellar medium and may be ultimately delivered to planets. However, we still do not understand many of the chemical processes at work during the evolution from the AGB phase to the PN. Here we review key aspects of our current understanding of the chemistry of AGB and post-AGB envelopes, highlighting the issues that are yet to be understood.

Abstract:Computational chemistry plays a relevant role in many astrochemical research fields, either by complementing experimental measurements or by deriving parameters difficult to be reproduced by laboratories. While the role of computational spectroscopy in assisting new observations in space is described, the core of the chapter is the investigation of the collisional radiative transfer and the bimolecular reactive processes occurring in the gas-phase conditions of the interstellar medium, using as a guide the contributions presented by the authors at the "Second Italian National Congress on Proto(-planetary) Astrochemistry", held in Trieste in September 2023. In particular, the need for accurate datasets of collisional coefficients to model molecular abundances will be discussed. Then, the role of quantum chemistry in the investigation of interstellar-relevant potential energy surfaces will be described, focusing on accurate thermodynamic quantities for the estimate of rate coefficients.

First close-coupling study of the excitation of a large cyclic molecule: collision of c-C5H6 with He

Abstract:Recent astronomical observations revealed an increasing molecular complexity in the interstellar medium through the detection of a series of large cyclic carbon species. To correctly interpret these detections, a complex analysis is necessary that takes into account the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) conditions of the emitting media (e.g. when energy level populations deviate from a Boltzman distribution). This requires proper state-to-state collisional data for the excitation and de-excitation processes of the molecular levels. Cyclopentadiene (c-C5H6), which was recently detected in multiple cold interstellar clouds, is extensively studied in many aspects due to its large importance for chemistry in general. At the same time, there are no collisional data available for this species, which are necessary for a more precise interpretation of the corresponding detections. In this work, we first provide an accurate 3D rigid-rotor interaction potential for the [c-C5H6 + He] complex from high-level of ab initio theories, which has been used to study their inelastic collision by the exact close coupling quantum scattering method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study where this method is systematically applied to treat the dynamics of molecular collisions involving more than ten atoms. We also analyse the collisional propensity rules and the differences in contrast to calculations, where the approximate coupled states scattering methods is used.

The Atomic to Molecular Transition in Galaxies. I: An Analytic Approximation for Photodissociation Fronts in Finite Clouds

Abstract:In this series of papers we study the structure of the atomic to molecular transition in the giant atomic-molecular complexes that are the repositories of most molecular gas in galaxies, with the ultimate goal of attaining a better understanding of what determines galaxies' molecular content. Here we derive an approximate analytic solution for the structure of a photodissociation region (PDR) in a cloud of finite size that is bathed in an external dissociating radiation field. Our solution extends previous work, which with few exceptions has been restricted to a one-dimensional treatment of the radiation field. We show that our analytic results compare favorably to exact numerical calculations in the one-dimensional limit. However, our more general geometry provides a more realistic representation than a semi-infinite slab for atomic-molecular complexes exposed to the interstellar radiation field, particularly in environments such as low-metallicity dwarf galaxies where the curvature and finite size of the atomic envelope cannot be neglected. For clouds that are at least 20% molecular we obtain analytic expressions for the molecular fraction in terms of properties of the gas and radiation field that are accurate to tens of percent, while for clouds of lower molecular content we obtain upper limits. As a side benefit, our analysis helps clarify when self-shielding is the dominant process in H_2 formation, and under what circumstances shielding by dust makes a significant contribution.

Non-equilibrium chemistry and cooling in the diffuse interstellar medium - I. Optically thin regime

Abstract:An accurate treatment of the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM) in hydrodynamic galaxy simulations requires that we follow not only the thermal evolution of the gas, but also the evolution of its chemical state, including its molecular chemistry, without assuming chemical (including ionisation) equilibrium. We present a reaction network that can be used to solve for this thermo-chemical evolution. Our model follows the evolution of all ionisation states of the 11 elements that dominate the cooling rate, along with important molecules such as H2 and CO, and the intermediate molecular species that are involved in their formation (20 molecules in total). We include chemical reactions on dust grains, thermal processes involving dust, cosmic ray ionisation and heating and photochemical reactions. We focus on conditions typical for the diffuse ISM, with densities of 10^-2 cm^-3 < nH < 10^4 cm^-3 and temperatures of 10^2 K < T < 10^4 K, and we consider a range of radiation fields, including no UV radiation. In this paper we consider only gas that is optically thin, while paper II considers gas that becomes shielded from the radiation field. We verify the accuracy of our model by comparing chemical abundances and cooling functions in chemical equilibrium with the photoionisation code Cloudy. We identify the major coolants in diffuse interstellar gas to be CII, SiII and FeII, along with OI and H2 at densities nH > 10^2 cm^-3. Finally, we investigate the impact of non-equilibrium chemistry on the cooling functions of isochorically or isobarically cooling gas. We find that, at T < 10^4 K, recombination lags increase the electron abundance above its equilibrium value at a given temperature, which can enhance the cooling rate by up to two orders of magnitude. The cooling gas also shows lower H2 abundances than in equilibrium, by up to an order of magnitude.

Molecular Outflows in Low- and High-Mass Star Forming Regions

Abstract:We review the known properties of molecular outflows from low- and high-mass young stars. General trends among outflows are identified, and the most recent studies on the morphology, kinematics, energetics, and evolution of molecular outflows are discussed, focusing on results from high-resolution millimeter observations. We review the existing four broad classes of outflow models and compare numerical simulations with the observational data. A single class of models cannot explain the range of morphological and kinematic properties that are observed, and we propose a possible solution. The impact of outflows on their cloud is examined, and we review how outflows can disrupt their surrounding environment, through the clearing of gas and the injection of momentum and energy onto the gas at distances from their powering sources from about 0.01 to a few pc. We also discuss the effects of shock-induced chemical processes on the ambient medium, and how these processes may act as a chemical clock to date outflows. Lastly, future outflow research with existing and planned millimeter and submillimeter instruments is presented.

Abstract:Solid-phase photo-processes involving icy dust grains greatly affect the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium by leading to the formation of complex organic molecules and by inducing photodesorption. So far, the focus of laboratory studies has been mainly on the impact of energetic ultraviolet (UV) photons on ices, but direct vibrational excitation by infrared (IR) photons is expected to influence the morphology and content of interstellar ices as well. However, little is still known about the mechanisms through which this excess vibrational energy is dissipated, and its implications on the structure and ice photochemistry. In this work, we present a systematic investigation of the behavior of interstellar relevant CO and CH3OH ice analogues upon resonant excitation of vibrational modes using tunable infrared radiation, leading to both the quantification of infrared-induced photodesorption and insights in the impact of vibrational energy dissipation on ice morphology. We utilize an ultrahigh vacuum setup at cryogenic temperatures to grow pure CO and CH3OH ices, as well as mixtures of the two. We expose the ices to intense, near-monochromatic mid-infrared free-electron-laser radiation to selectively excite the species. The dissipation of vibrational energy is observed to be highly dependent on the excited mode and the chemical environment of the ice. All amorphous ices undergo some degree of restructuring towards a more organized configuration upon on-resonance irradiation. Moreover, IR-induced photodesorption is observed to occur for both pure CO and CH3OH ices, with interstellar photodesorption efficiencies of the order of 10 molecules cm-2 s-1 (i.e., comparable to or higher than UV-induced counterparts). Indirect photodesorption of CO upon vibrational excitation of CH3OH in ice mixtures is also observed to occur, particularly in environments rich in methanol.

Unimolecular Chemical Kinetics in the Interstellar: Competition of Infrared Radiation and Collision Activation Mechanisms

Abstract:Unimolecular gas phase chemical reactions could be activated by both infrared (IR) radiation and inter-molecular collision in the interstellar environment. Understanding the interplay and competition between the radiation and collision activation mechanisms is crucial for assessing accurate reaction rate constants with an appropriate model. In this work, guided by an extended version of Lindemann theory that considers the contribution of both the radiation-activation and collision-activation to the rate constant of unimolecular reactions, we show that the relative importance of the two mechanisms can be measured by a dimensionless number $PR$ that is the ratio of the collision frequency to the radiation absorption rate of the molecule. The reaction kinetic is dominated by collision-activation or by radiation activation depending on whether $PR$ is larger or smaller than a reference value $PR^*$, which is determined to be $PR^* \approx 10$ based on magnitudes of molecular properties and is verified by detailed calculations of a number of typical interstellar unimolecular reactions. This method of evaluating the relative importance of the two mechanisms is checked against master equation calculations of two interstellar reactions: the dissociation reaction of silicilic acid around the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star and the methyl association in Titan's atmosphere, and the validity is verified. The method can be used in the future to help determine the appropriate and effective modeling approach for chemical reactions in astrophysical environments.

Excitation Processes in Experimental Photoionized Plasmas

Abstract:Photoionized plasmas widely exist nearby strong radiative sources in the universe. With the development of the high energy density facilities, photoionized plasmas related to astrophysical objects are generated in laboratories accordingly. RCF (radiative collisional code based on the flexible atomic code) is a theoretical model applied to steady-state photoionized plasmas. Its rate equation includes five groups of mutually inverse atomic processes, which are spontaneous decay and photoexcitation, electron impact excitation and deexcitation, photoionization and radiative recombination, electron impact ionization and three body recombination, autoionization and dielectronic capture. All of the atomic data are calculated by FAC (the flexible atomic code), and with four input parameters, RCF can calculate the charge distribution and emission spectrum of the plasma. RCF has well simulated the charge state distribution of a photoionizing Fe experiment on Z-facility and the measured spectrum of photoionizing Si experiment on GEKKO-XII laser facility. According to the simulation results, the importance of photoexcitation and electron impact excitation processes in the two photoionization experiments is discussed. In the photoionizing Fe experiment condition, high energy photons not only ionize the ions by photoionization directly, but also excite the ions to autoionizing levels, ionizing the ions indirectly. What is more, far from ionizing the ions, electrons even suppress the ionization of the plasma by exciting the ions to levels with small ionization cross sections. In the photoionizing Si experiment condition, because of high photoexcitation rate, strong resonance line of He-like ion and some Li-like ion lines, which have similar spontaneous decay rates as the resonance line, are emitted. Although the intercombination line of He-like ion has lower spontaneous decay rate than the resonance lines, strong recombination makes them have comparable strengthes. Electron impact excitation can influence the line ratio of He-like ion lines by affecting the distribution of 1s2l (l=s,p) levels.

Abstract:Photochemistry is a fascinating branch of chemistry concerned with molecules and light. However, the importance of simulating light‐induced processes is reflected also in fields as diverse as biology, material science, or medicine. This Minireview highlights recent progress achieved in theoretical chemistry to calculate electronically excited states of molecules and simulate their photo‐induced dynamics aspiring to reach experimental accuracy. We focus on emergent methods and give selected examples that illustratethe progress in recent years towards predicting complex electronic structure situations involving strong correlation, performing calculations for large molecules, describing multi‐chromophoric systems, and simulating nonadiabatic molecular dynamics for long time scales, for molecules in gas phase or in complex biological environments.

Abstract:The latest molecular data - potential energy curves and Rydberg-valence interactions - characterising the super-excited electronic states of BF are reviewed in order to provide the input for the study of their fragmentation dynamics. Starting from this input, the main paths and mechanisms of BF$^+$ dissociative recombination and vibrational excitation are analysed. Their cross sections are computed for the first time using a method based on the multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT), and Maxwellian rate-coefficients are calculated and displayed in ready-to-be-used format for low temperature plasma kinetics simulations.

Abstract:{It has recently been proposed that giant molecular complexes form at the sites where streams of diffuse warm atomic gas collide at transonic velocities.} {We study the global statistics of molecular clouds formed by large scale colliding flows of warm neutral atomic interstellar gas under ideal MHD conditions. The flows deliver material as well as kinetic energy and trigger thermal instability leading eventually to gravitational collapse.} {We perform adaptive mesh refinement MHD simulations which, for the first time in this context, treat self-consistently cooling and self-gravity.} {The clouds formed in the simulations develop a highly inhomogeneous density and temperature structure, with cold dense filaments and clumps condensing from converging flows of warm atomic gas. In the clouds, the column density probability density distribution (PDF) peaks at $\sim 2 \times 10^{21} \psc$ and decays rapidly at higher values; the magnetic intensity correlates weakly with density from $n \sim 0.1$ to $10^4 \pcc$, and then varies roughly as $n^{1/2}$ for higher densities.} {The global statistical properties of such molecular clouds are reasonably consistent with observational determinations. Our numerical simulations suggest that molecular clouds formed by the moderately supersonic collision of warm atomic gas streams.}

Models of turbulent dissipation regions in the diffuse interstellar medium

Abstract:Supersonic turbulence is a large reservoir of suprathermal energy in the interstellar medium. Its dissipation, because it is intermittent in space and time, can deeply modify the chemistry of the gas. We further explore a hybrid method to compute the chemical and thermal evolution of a magnetized dissipative structure, under the energetic constraints provided by the observed properties of turbulence in the cold neutral medium. For the first time, we model a random line of sight by taking into account the relative duration of the bursts with respect to the thermal and chemical relaxation timescales of the gas. The key parameter is the turbulent rate of strain "a" due to the ambient turbulence. With the gas density, it controls the size of the dissipative structures, therefore the strength of the burst. For a large range of rates of strain and densities, the models of turbulent dissipation regions (TDR) reproduce the CH+ column densities observed in the diffuse medium and their correlation with highly excited H2. They do so without producing an excess of CH. As a natural consequence, they reproduce the abundance ratios of HCO+/OH and HCO+/H2O, and their dynamic range of about one order of magnitude observed in diffuse gas. Large C2H and CO abundances, also related to those of HCO+, are another outcome of the TDR models that compare well with observed values. The abundances and column densities computed for CN, HCN and HNC are one order of magnitude above PDR model predictions, although still significantly smaller than observed values.

Progress and challenges in the calculation of electronic excited states.

Abstract:A detailed understanding of the properties of electronic excited states and the reaction mechanisms that molecules undergo after light irradiation is a fundamental ingredient for following light-driven natural processes and for designing novel photonic materials. The aim of this review is to present an overview of the ab initio quantum chemical and time-dependent density functional theory methods that can be used to model spectroscopy and photochemistry in molecular systems. The applicability and limitations of the different methods as well as the main frontiers are discussed. To illustrate the progress achieved by excited-state chemistry in the recent years as well as the main challenges facing computational chemistry, three main applications that reflect the authors' experience are addressed: the UV/Vis spectroscopy of organic molecules, the assignment of absorption and emission bands of organometallic complexes, and finally, the obtainment of non-adiabatic photoinduced pathways mediated by conical intersections. In the latter case, special emphasis is put on the photochemistry of DNA. These applications show that the description of electronically excited states is a rewarding but challenging area of research.

Anisotropic molecular photoemission dynamics: Interpreting and accounting for the nuclear motion

Abstract:We investigate how vibration affects molecular photoemission dynamics, through simulations on two-dimension asymmetric model molecules including the electronic and nuclear motions in a fully correlated way. We show that a slight anisotropy in the electron-ion momentum sharing is sufficient to prevent one from unambigously characterizing the vibrationnaly averaged photoemission dynamics in terms of stereo Wigner delays. We further show that vibrational resolution can be retrieved in fixed-nuclei simulations, using effective molecular conformations that are specific to each vibrational channel. The optimal internuclear distances found empirically in 1-photon processes can be identified a priori using simple physical arguments. They also turn out to be efficient to simulate vibrationnally-resolved \rabbit measurements and to account for interchannel coherences in broadband 1-photon ionization.

Abstract:We investigate the excitation mechanisms of near‐infrared [Fe ii] and H2 emission lines observed in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We built a photoionization model grid considering a two‐component continuum: one component accounts for the ‘big bump’ component peaking at 1 Ryd and another represents the X‐ray source that dominates the continuum emission at high energies. Photoionization models considering as ionizing source a spectral energy distribution obtained from photometric data of Seyert 2 Mrk 1066 taken from the literature were considered. Results of these models were compared with a large sample of observational long‐slit and Integral field Unit (IFU) spectroscopy data of the nuclear region for a sample of active objects. We found that the correlation between the observational [Fe ii]λ 1.2570 μm/Paβ and m/Brγ is well reproduced by our models, as are the relationships that involve the H2 emission‐line ratios observed in the spectroscopic data. We conclude that heating by X‐rays produced by active nuclei can be considered a common and very important mechanism of excitation of [Fe ii] and H2.
