Abstract:The European Spallation Source (ESS), currently finishing its construction, will soon provide the most intense neutron beams for multi-disciplinary science. At the same time, it will also produce a high-intensity neutrino flux with an energy suitable for precision measurements of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering. We describe some physics prospects, within and beyond the Standard Model, of employing innovative detector technologies to take the most out of this large flux. We show that, compared to current measurements, the ESS will provide a much more precise understanding of neutrino and nuclear properties.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source being constructed in Lund, Sweden will provide the user community with a neutron source of unprecedented brightness. By 2025, a suite of 15 instruments will be served by a high-brightness moderator system placed above the spallation target. The ESS infrastructure, consisting of the proton linac, the target station, and the instrument halls, allows for implementation of a second source below the spallation target. We propose to develop a second neutron source with a high-intensity moderator able to (1) deliver a larger total cold neutron flux, (2) provide high intensities at longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of Cold (4–10 Å), Very Cold (10–40 Å), and Ultra Cold (several 100 Å) neutrons, as opposed to Thermal and Cold neutrons delivered by the top moderator. Offering both unprecedented brilliance, flux, and spectral range in a single facility, this upgrade will make ESS the most versatile neutron source in the world and will further strengthen the leadership of Europe in neutron science. The new source will boost several areas of condensed matter research such as imaging and spin-echo, and will provide outstanding opportunities in fundamental physics investigations of the laws of nature at a precision unattainable anywhere else. At the heart of the proposed system is a volumetric liquid deuterium moderator. Based on proven technology, its performance will be optimized in a detailed engineering study. This moderator will be complemented by secondary sources to provide intense beams of Very- and Ultra-Cold Neutrons.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently well on its way to completion, will soon provide the most intense neutron beams for multi-disciplinary science. Fortuitously, it will also generate the largest pulsed neutrino flux suitable for the detection of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS), a process recently measured for the first time at ORNL's Spallation Neutron Source. We describe innovative detector technologies maximally able to profit from the order-of-magnitude increase in neutrino flux provided by the ESS, along with their sensitivity to a rich particle physics phenomenology accessible through high-statistics, precision CE$\nu$NS measurements.

Abstract:Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

An Overview of the Spallation Neutron Source Project

Abstract:The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is being designed, constructed, installed and commissioned by the staff of six national laboratories, Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The accelerator systems are designed to deliver a 695 ns proton-pulse onto a mercury target at a 60-Hz repetition rate and an average power of 2-MW. Neutron moderators that will convert the spallation neutrons into slow neutrons for material science research will surround the target. The Front-End systems are designed to generate an H- beam of minipulses, 68% beam on, 32% beam off every 965 ns, at 2.5 MeV for 1 ms, 60 times a second. The Front-End systems include a RF driven, volume-production ion source, beam chopping system, RFQ, and beam transport. The ion source will have to achieve about 65 mA to deliver 52 mA at the input to the linac. The linac consists of a drift tube linac up to 86.8 MeV, a coupled-cell linac to 185 MeV, and a superconducting RF linac to the nominal energy of 1 GeV. The design of the superconducting section includes 11 cryomodules with three, 0.61-beta cavities per cryomodule and 17 cryomodules with four, 0.81-beta cavities per cryomodule, with space to install four more 0.81-beta cryomodules. The accumulator ring is designed for charge exchange injection at full energy. The peak charge per bunch at the end of the accumulation cycle will reach 2.08x10**14 for 2-MW operation. The goal is to control beam losses to less than 1x10**-4.

Abstract:There is currently a big effort put into the operation and construction of world class neutron scattering facilities (SNS and SNS-TS2 in the US, J-PARC in Japan, ESS in Europe, CSS in China, PIK in Russia). On the other hand, there exists a network of smaller neutron scattering facilities which play a key role in creating a large neutron scattering community who is able to efficiently use the existing facilities. With the foreseen closure of the ageing nuclear research reactors, especially in Europe, there is a risk of seeing a shrinking of the community able to use efficiently the world class facilities. There is thus a reflection being conducted in several countries for the replacement of smaller research reactors with low energy accelerator based sources. We consider here a reference design for a compact neutron source based on existing accelerator components. We estimate the performances of various types of neutron scattering instruments built around such a source. The results suggest that nowadays state of the art neutron scattering experiments could be successfully performed on such a compact source and that it is thus a viable replacement solution for neutron research reactors.

Abstract:Like every megaproject, the European Spallation Source (ESS) currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, has had to make a number of inevitable compromises to remain within budget and on schedule. Some of these compromises carry technical consequences with a potential impact on the operational characteristics of the facility and the neutron scattering instruments in particular. In order to prepare for operation of the facility, it is timely to consider again the subjects of instrument backgrounds and shielding from the project design phase. The expected ranges of instrument backgrounds, and the relative strengths of each contributor, are estimated using multiple physics simulations. These are compared with other leading spallation sources. Finally, several suggestions are given to reduce the background contributions in each case, should they prove to be dominant in practice when the commissioning phase of the facility begins.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden will become the world's leading neutron source for the study of materials. The instruments are being selected from conceptual proposals submitted by groups from around Europe. These instruments present numerous challenges for detector technology in the absence of the availability of Helium-3, which is the default choice for detectors for instruments built until today and due to the extreme rates expected across the ESS instrument suite. Additionally a new generation of source requires a new generation of detector technologies to fully exploit the opportunities that this source provides. The detectors will be sourced from partners across Europe through numerous in-kind arrangements; a process that is somewhat novel for the neutron scattering community. This contribution presents briefly the current status of detectors for the ESS, and outlines the timeline to completion. For a conjectured instrument suite based upon instruments recommended for construction, a recently updated snapshot of the current expected detector requirements is presented. A strategy outline as to how these requirements might be tackled by novel detector developments is shown. In terms of future developments for the neutron community, synergies should be sought with other disciples, as recognized by various recent initiatives in Europe, in the context of the fundamentally multi-disciplinary nature of detectors. This strategy has at its basis the in-kind and collaborative partnerships necessary to be able to produce optimally performant detectors that allow the ESS instruments to be world-leading. This foresees and encourages a high level of collaboration and interdependence at its core, and rather than each group being all-rounders in every technology, the further development of centres of excellence across Europe for particular technologies and niches.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory that, once completed at full specifications, will operate the world's most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3 M Euro Research and Innovation Action within the European Union Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) is now underway to develop a second neutron source located below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, which is located above the spallation target and designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source is being optimized to deliver higher intensity and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold neutrons (CNs) (2 to 20 Å), very cold neutrons (VCNs) (10 to 120 Å), and ultracold neutrons (UCNs) ( >500 Å). The second source consists of a large liquid deuterium moderator to deliver CNs and serve secondary VCN and UCN sources, for which different options are under study. These new sources will boost several areas of condensed matter research and will provide unique opportunities in fundamental physics. The HighNESS project is now entering its last year, and we are working toward the Conceptual Design Report of the ESS upgrade. In this paper, results obtained in the first 2 years, ongoing developments, and future perspectives are described.

Abstract:In the course of the Horizon 2020 project HighNESS, a second moderator concept has been developed for the European Spallation Source, which complements the currently built moderator and is optimized for high intensity with a large viewable surface area. In this work we introduce conceptual designs for neutron instruments for condensed matter research designed to make optimal use of the capabilities of this moderator. The focus is on two concepts for small-angle neutron scattering and one neutron imaging instrument, which are intended to complement corresponding instruments that are already under construction at the European Spallation Source. One small-angle neutron scattering instrument concept resembles a conventional pinhole collimator geometry and aims to profit from the proposed second moderator by enabling to illuminate larger samples and providing particularly high resolution, drawing on a 30 m collimation and corresponding detector distance. A second small-angle neutron scattering instrument concept adopts nested mirror optics that enable to efficiently exploit the large moderator size and provide high resolution by focusing on the detector. The neutron imaging instrument concept is a typical pinhole instrument that can be found at continuous sources and draws on the corresponding strengths of high flux and large homogeneous fields-of-view, while still providing moderate wavelength resolution for advanced imaging methods.

Abstract:The Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is designed to produce intense pulsed neutrons for various science and engineering applications. Copious neutrinos are a free by-product. When it reaches full power, the SNS will be the world's brightest source of neutrinos in the few tens of MeV range. The proposed CLEAR (Coherent Low Energy A (Nuclear) Recoils) experiment will measure coherent elastic neutral current neutrino-nucleus scattering at the SNS. The physics reach includes tests of the Standard Model.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source, which is under construction in Lund, Sweden, aims to be the world's brightest source of neutrons. During the first phase of construction, users will have access to a suite of 15 instruments, which will produce neutrons through a butterfly-shaped moderator system located above the spallation target. The HighNESS project, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 program, has the goal of providing a new design for the second moderator, which will be situated below the spallation target and will be the most intense neutron source in the world. The new moderator will provide a higher intensity of neutrons in the cold, very cold, and ultracold energy regions, which will advance research in several areas of condensed matter and offer unique opportunities in fundamental physics. Work Package 2 of the HighNESS project is focused on supporting the design of the second moderator by providing nuclear data support for neutronics calculations and improving the accompanying physics software. This paper showcases recent advancements in NJOY + NCrystal, a tool for creating thermal neutron scattering–evaluated nuclear data files and continued work on nanodiamonds as advanced neutron reflectors.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source (ESS), currently under construction, is based on a high-brightness, bi-spectral, low-dimensional moderator placed above a spallation target, intended to initially serve fifteen neutron scattering instruments. Within the upgrade path of ESS, the HighNESS project aims at designing a source complementary to this upper moderator, focusing on delivering a higher intensity and a colder spectrum of neutrons. We have investigated the use of solid ortho-deuterium at 5 K as a source of very cold neutrons (VCNs). This source performs competitively as a high-intensity cold-neutron moderator, while also showing an order-of-magnitude flux increase in the very cold range above 40 ̊ A compared to a liquid deuterium moderator of similar volume and shape, also designed within HighNESS. The long-wavelength performance of the source can be improved further by encasing it in a thin layer of nanodiamonds. The cooling of a solid deuterium moderator placed so close to the spallation target of a high-power neutron source like ESS is very challenging, but may be feasible by augmenting the heat conductivity with the addition of low-density metallic foam structures within the moderator vessel. Such a source could provide unprecedented opportunities in fundamental physics research and neutron scattering using VCNs.

The new Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source - Design and Performance

Abstract:The design and performance of the new Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge are described. CNCS is a direct geometry inelastic time-of-flight spectrometer, designed to cover essentially the same energy and momentum transfer ranges as IN5 at ILL, LET at ISIS, DCS at NIST, TOFTOF at FRM2, AMATERAS at J-PARC, PHAROS at LANSCE and NEAT at HZB, at similar energy resolution. Measured values of key figures such as neutron flux at sample position and energy resolution are compared between measurements and ray tracing Monte Carlo simulations, and good agreement (better than 20% of absolute numbers) has been achieved. The instrument performs very well in the cold and thermal neutron energy ranges, and promises to become a workhorse for the neutron scattering community for quasielastic and inelastic scattering experiments.

Abstract:This manuscript outlines a concept that would leverage the existing proton accelerator at the Spallation Neutron Source of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enable transformative science via one world-class facility serving two missions: Single Event Effects (SEE) and Muon Spectroscopy ($\mu$SR). The $\mu$SR portion would deliver the world's highest flux and highest resolution pulsed muon beams for materials characterization purposes, with precision and capabilities well beyond comparable facilities. The SEE capabilities deliver neutron, proton and muon beams for aerospace industries that are facing an impending challenge to certify equipment for safe and reliable behavior under bombardment from atmospheric radiation originating from cosmic and solar rays. With negligible impact on the primary neutron scattering mission of the SNS, the proposed facility will have enormous benefit for science and industry alike. We have designated this facility 'SEEMS'.

Abstract:A design study, named for European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam, has been carried out during the years 2018–2022 of how the 5 MW proton linear accelerator of the European Spallation Source under construction in Lund, Sweden, can be used to produce the world's most intense long-baseline neutrino beam. The high beam intensity will allow for measuring the neutrino oscillations near the second oscillation maximum at which the CP violation signal is close to three times higher than at the first maximum, where other experiments measure. This will enable CP violation discovery in the leptonic sector for a wider range of values of the CP violating phase and, in particular, a higher precision measurement of . The present Conceptual Design Report describes the results of the design study of the required upgrade of the ESS linac, of the accumulator ring used to compress the linac pulses from 2.86 ms to 1.2 μs, and of the target station, where the 5 MW proton beam is used to produce the intense neutrino beam. It also presents the design of the near detector, which is used to monitor the neutrino beam as well as to measure neutrino cross sections, and of the large underground far detector located 360 km from ESS, where the magnitude of the oscillation appearance of from is measured. The physics performance of the research facility has been evaluated demonstrating that after 10 years of data-taking, leptonic CP violation can be detected with more than 5 standard deviation significance over 70% of the range of values that the CP violation phase angle can take and that can be measured with a standard error less than 8° irrespective of the measured value of . These results demonstrate the uniquely high physics performance of the proposed research facility.

Abstract:Transport calculations for neutronic design require accurate nuclear data and validated computational tools. In the Spallation Physics Group, at the European Spallation Source, we perform shielding and neutron beam calculations to help the deployment of the instrument suite for the current high brilliance (top) moderator, as well for the design of the high intensity bottom moderator, currently under study for the facility. This work includes providing the best available nuclear data in addition to improving models and tools when necessary. In this paper we present the status of these activities, which include a set of thermal scattering kernels for moderator, reflector, and structural materials, the development of new kernels for beryllium considering crystallite size effects, nanodiamonds, liquid hydrogen and deuterium based on path integral molecular dynamics, and the use of the software package NCrystal to assist the development of nuclear data in the framework of the new HighNESS project.

Abstract:The Big Bang should have created equal amounts of matter and antimatter; however today matter remains in the Universe. The European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam's (ESSnuSB) main objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of using the European Spallation Source (ESS) proton linac to produce the world's most intense neutrino beam simultaneously with the 5 MW proton generation for neutron production and measure the parameters of the neutrino oscillation, leading to the determination of the value of ${\delta}CP$. Once it is constructed ESSnuSB project aims to explain the matter/antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The Cost Action EuroNuNet's (Combining forces for a novel European facility for neutrino-antineutrino symmetry-violation discovery ) major goals are to bring together the European neutrino physicists to study this concept in a spirit of inclusiveness and to impact the priority list of High Energy Physics policy makers and of funding agencies to this new approach to the experimental discovery of leptonic CP violation.

Abstract:The European Spallation Source is being constructed in Lund, Sweden and is planned to be the world's brightest pulsed spallation neutron source for cold and thermal neutron beams ($\le$ 1 eV). The facility uses a 2 GeV proton beam to produce neutrons from a tungsten target. The neutrons are then moderated in a moderator assembly consisting of both liquid hydrogen and water compartments. Surrounding the moderator are 22 beamports, which view the moderator's outside surfaces. The beamports are connected to long neutron guides that transport the moderated neutrons to the sample position via reflections. As well as the desired moderated neutrons, fast neutrons coming directly from the target can find their way down the beamlines. These can create unwanted sources of background for the instruments. To mitigate such a kind of background, several instruments will use curved guides to lose direct line-of-sight (LoS) to the moderator and the target. In addition instruments can also use shielding collimators to reduce the amount of fast neutrons further traveling down the guide due to albedo reflections or streaming. Several different materials have been proposed for this purpose. We present the results of a study of different options for collimators and identify the optimal choices that balance cost, background and activation levels.
