Abstract:Quality mentorship is essential for a successful career in cardiothoracic surgery. Abstract:Mentoring is a popular resource for individual and organizational improvement. In this study we examined for the first time passion in executive mentoring as a potential approach to developing organizational innovativeness. In most previous studies the executives, for example, chief executive officers, were the mentors, but we took the opposite view, namely, the executives were the mentees. Results confirmed the hypotheses that the executive's perception of the mentor's passion was positively related to the executive's perception of organizational innovativeness, through the quality of mentoring and cognitive adaptability. Confirmatory factor analysis and regression analysis confirmed the validity of the results. Results demonstrated the value of passion in executive mentoring and the subsequent link to organizational innovativeness via the quality of mentoring and cognitive adaptability. Theoretical and managerial implications and directions for further research are discussed.

Abstract:Introduction: The medical education literature lacks a uniform definition of mentoring. Mentoring relationships benefit the mentor and mentee. Mentoring roles include coach, advisor, teacher, counselor, and sponsor in the setting of mutual trust toward impacting psychosocial and career functions for the mentee. Mentoring helps improve underrepresented minority medical student performance. Medical students value mentoring relationships. Student mentees note a positive influence on career planning and research and saw mentors as counselors, idea providers, and role models. Medical students' varied goals and development call for personalized, flexible mentoring. Methods: This study sought to expand the current understanding of medical student mentoring. We emailed a voluntary Qualtrics survey to second-, third-, and fourth-year medical students at the Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine asking, "What do you want from a mentor (choose all that apply)?" Multiple choice options were constructed based upon literature search. We conducted one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test to identify whether mentoring preferences differed by student academic year. Results: Of 363 students, 171 responded (47% response rate). Top-rated responses included honest feedback, responsiveness, and professional connections or networking opportunities. Discussion: Student desire for honest feedback from mentors was prioritized, affirming the lack of need for impression management in the mentoring relationship. This investigation will be useful for specific mentoring relationships, helping to trigger discussion regarding specific mentoring hopes and training mentors.

Abstract:PurposeThis article aims to present a unique dimension to mentor studies in that unlike most research that focuses on the novice-teachers-mentee, this study explores the influence of mentoring on the mentors themselves. Two main questions were examined: “Which components of mentoring influence the mentors' professional development?” and “What is the differential impact of each of these components as they are internalized by the mentors?”Design/methodology/approachA total of 765 mentors completed a questionnaire composed of 47 multiple-choice questions and an open-ended question describing the contribution of mentoring. The survey thus generated both quantitative and qualitative data.FindingsThe results show three main components of mentoring that influence mentors' professional development in the following order: personal–emotional, didactic knowledge and systemic–organizational. The findings also illustrate how the mentors used a comparison process to develop their professional perception: first, by comparing their role as a teacher and their role as a mentor, and second, by comparing their own professional identity as a teacher with that of the novice-teacher.Research limitations/implicationsThe implications of the study point to the importance of mentoring for mentors' professional development. Practical implications of this study encourage mentor training courses that combine a body of knowledge of theory and practice, as well as supervision and mentoring for mentors. Abstract:This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between mentorship, survivorship, and identity construction in people who have had gynecologic cancer and participated as mentors in a peer mentorship program. A qualitative descriptive study was designed, and hour-long semi-structured interviews with peer mentors were conducted. Interviews investigated how serving as a peer mentor influenced understanding of mentors' own cancer experiences. Thematic analysis was then conducted. All authors open-coded a subset of interviews to develop a codebook, which was then used to code the remaining transcripts. This qualitative inductive analysis of over 7 h of data was managed with NVivo 12. Seven peer mentor participants ( N = 7) were interviewed. Four main themes emerged: serving in the social role of mentor gave participants (i) a sense of daily direction in their lives, (ii) an opportunity to give back to others in the cancer community, (iii) an explanatory reason for their cancer journey, and (iv) the ability to reify their own status as survivor. Providing support through a peer mentorship program helped our participants make meaning in their own cancer experience.

Abstract:Scholarly activities (i.e., the discovery of new knowledge; development of new technologies, methods, materials, or uses; integration of knowledge leading to new understanding) are intended to measure the quality and quantity of dissemination of knowledge. A successful mentorship program is necessary during residency to help residents achieve the six core competencies (patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills) required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The role of the mentor in this process is pivotal in the advancement of the residents' knowledge about evidence-based medicine. With this process, while mentees become more self-regulated, exhibit confidence in their performance, and demonstrate more insight and aptitude in their jobs, mentors also achieve elevated higher self-esteem, enhanced leadership skills, and personal gratification. As such, we may conclude that mentoring is a two-sided relationship; i.e., a 'win-win' style of commitment between the mentor and mentee. Hence, both parties will eventually advance academically, as well as professionally.

Abstract:Mentoring has a long tradition in academic health centers, and from an institutional perspective can positively impact retention, wellness, promotion success, work satisfaction, and more. On the individual level, mentorship can provide professional growth and personal satisfaction for both participants. However, mentors may struggle with how to build their mentorship skills, navigating challenges with mentees over time, or if/how/when to conclude a mentor-mentee relationship. Mentees may not understand how to find a mentor, what the nature of that relationship is, or what their role is (what characterizes a "good" mentee). As important as mentorship is, it can be challenging for both to find and maintain a high-quality mentor-mentee relationship. This article reviews the qualities that are most critical in developing a successful mentoring relationship, the longitudinal nature of this relationship, common problems that arise, and the potential rewards that exist for each person involved in the relationship.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify best practices, strategies, and methods leading to the success of experienced and accomplished physicians to provide a reference for residents of graduate medical programs. Methods Ten practicing physicians and resident mentors each with at least 10 years of experience were interviewed with open-ended, narrative-based questions related to themes of paths to success, the proper role of a resident, lessons learned, helpful skills, and advice for a new resident/physician. Results Surprisingly, interviewees' answers reflected the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. The importance of mentorship was also emphasized. Conclusion ACGME core competencies serve as a roadmap to success based on the experience of many successful physicians. Given that mandated mentor programs in many graduate medical programs are ineffectively impersonal and mechanical, residents can follow interviewees' advice and proactively form mentor-mentee relationships with experienced physicians to learn the best paths of success.

Abstract:Background: Quality mentorship is crucial for long-term success in academia and overall job satisfaction. Unfortunately, formal mentorship training is lacking, and there is little recourse for failed mentor-mentee relationships. Methods: We performed a literature review to understand the current state of mentorship research with a focus on: (1) what mentorship is and why it is important for success; (2) establishing mentor-mentee relationships; and (3) the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Results: From the literature review, we compiled a number of mentorship recommendations for individuals, departments, institutions, and professional associations. These recommendations focus on building a mentorship network, establishing formalized mentorship training, how to build a productive and mutually beneficial mentor-mentee relationship, and instituting a system of mentorship accountability. Conclusion: We hope that by centralizing this information and providing a list of resources and actionable recommendations we inspire and encourage others to make meaningful changes in their approach to mentorship to create a more kind, caring, and equitable environment in which to conduct our work.

Abstract:To me, "antimentors" are not people who have made poor choices leading to a suboptimal career. We all have made poor choices at times, and nearly always, we are trying to make good choices with the knowledge and experiences we have at the time. No person's career is perfect (no matter how it appears!), and no one makes exclusively good choices; failures and mistakes are key to our journey moving forward. I would suggest great mentors can teach us from their good and bad choices alike.

Abstract:A mentor-mentee relationship, also known as a mentoring relationship, is a professional or personal partnership in which a more experienced or knowledgeable individual (the mentor) provides guidance, support, and advice to a less experienced or knowledgeable individual (the mentee). The primary purpose of this relationship is to facilitate the mentee's personal and professional growth. Mentors typically share their expertise, wisdom, and experiences to help mentees navigate their career or personal development paths. In this qualitative exploratory study 10 mentees were interviewed and analysis was done based on their answers to find out the strengthening factors of a mentor-mentee relationship particularly focusing on the qualities and traits required to build trust. Abstract:Mentorship plays a crucial role in the professional development of hospitalists by offering guidance, support, and opportunities for career advancement. Multiple studies have reported that mentorship significantly contributes to improving job performance and cultivating happiness in medicine. Further, mentorship also leads to increased confidence in decision-making, and enhanced work-life balance. Additionally, mentees have reported greater engagement, reduced burnout, and commitment to their organizations. Most of these studies were performed on academic hospitalists and very little has been written about the foundation of non-academic organizations: mid-career hospitalists. Academic organizations have invested in mentorship programs, but little focus is given to mentorship of hospitalists, specifically mid-career hospitalists, outside of these settings. The lack of mentorship contributes to lack of professional development, burnout, low job satisfaction, worse patient outcomes, and increased turnover. By fostering a culture of mentorship, healthcare institutions can better retain talent, improve patient care, and ensure sustained career satisfaction among hospitalists. This article delves into the importance of mentorship, its empowering benefits, and strategies tailored to the specific needs of mid-career hospitalists working in non-academic institutions. Further, we advocate for integrating robust mentorship as a strategic initiative to bolster the professional trajectory of this vital group within the healthcare system.

Abstract:How can women physicians address the needs of those they serve until they meet their own needs for balance and fulfillment in their lives and careers? They can't, but there are sources of help. Women physicians can learn from consultants whose professional expertise can help them devise master plans to attain equilibrium, competence, and influence, and they can speak with other women physicians who share similar experiences and have succeeded in attaining stability, proficiency, and authority in their own lives. Career development coach and faculty career and diversity consultant Janet Bickel writes that seasoned professionals offer assistance in planning for productive careers that combine personal and professional goals. To find a coach, ask colleagues about their experiences and for recommendations. When selecting a coach, inquire about their training and credentials; ask for a free consultation and for references. Interview at least three coaches before making a selection. A coach with a similar background may provide the most comfortable working relationship. Ms. Bickel offers suggestions and programs to consider when seeking a career coach. Physicians Julia Files and Janis Blair address the multiple responsibilities of motherhood and medicine. Their experiences and tips from colleagues demonstrate that women in search of harmony benefit from others' knowledge and wise advice. Talking with colleagues lessens the feeling of isolation; all mothers who aspire to be the best at medicine and motherhood worry that achieving a healthy balance may be impossible. Drs. Files and Blair share strategies that worked for them and their colleagues at the Mayo Clinic.
Reverse-mentorship of the core concepts in philosophy and mental health: a medical education case report

Abstract:Aims The aim of this medical education case report was to outline the development and outcomes of a reverse-mentorship project that enabled cross-generational collaborative learning. The project took the shape of a philosophy of psychiatry journal club facilitated by a psychiatry core trainee in west London, UK. Background Reverse-mentorship reverses traditional roles of mentor and mentee. It is an increasingly fashionable concept in medical education. The junior mentors the senior clinician. The implicit learning outcomes include provision of a two-way learning process, development of mentoring skills for the more junior clinician and collaboration that builds social capital within the workplace. Reverse-mentorship is effective when the junior mentor is recognised for their expertise in a particular area. In this instance, the junior mentor has a special interest in the philosophy of psychiatry. Method Junior mentor and senior mentees formed a monthly journal club. The club tracked arguments from anti- and biological psychiatry on the meaning of mental illness. The debate offered insight into a semantic analysis of mental illness and a deeper conceptual understanding of medicine. The learning material derived from the core concepts of philosophy and mental health (Fulford et al.). The role of the mentor was to facilitate group discussion around arguments from relevant papers. A survey, adapted from a recent reverse-mentorship review article, measured the quality of educational experience for mentor and mentees. Result Overall, mentees (senior clinicians) agreed that the mentor (junior clinician) displayed attributes and behaviours for effective mentoring across most domains, including enthusiasm, effective communication, respect for mentee expertise and active listening to the needs of the mentee. The mentor was particularly impressed with the mentees’ openness to learn new concepts and respect shown. General reflections on the experience of reverse-mentorship were positive overall. A thematic review highlighted particular aspects, including: a good way to learn a new skill and great opportunity to develop professional skills of mentoring. Conclusion The importance of mentoring in medical education is well established. Reverse-mentorship is a new concept that looks to harness the unique qualities of millennials, including their aptitudes for empowerment, innovation and collaboration. This medical education case report shows that an enthusiastic junior clinician can successfully pilot an educational-mentoring scheme aimed at senior clinicians. To make more explicit the intuitive benefits of reverse-mentorship, longitudinal reviews are needed. However, this case report contributes important insights into this burgeoning field of medical education.

Abstract:Background: Mentoring relationships play a critical but poorly understood role in mentoring's overall success. To overcome these knowledge gaps, a study of mentee experiences in the Palliative Medicine Initiative, a structured research-based mentoring program, is proposed. The program's clearly described mentoring approach, competency-based mentoring stages and curated mentoring environment ensure a consistent mentoring experience. It provides a unique platform to study mentoring relationships longitudinally and its implications on professional identity formation. Methodology: The Tool Design Systematic Evidence-Based Approach methodology is used to map and employ current understanding. A review of recent reviews on mentoring processes, mentoring's effects, professional identity formation and professional identity formation assessment tools lay the foundation for the design of semi-structured interviews and mentoring diaries to evaluate the characteristics of successful mentoring relationships and mentoring's impact on professional identity formation. The data accrued from these tools were evaluated using this methodology whilst changes in professional identity formation were assessed using the Ring Theory of Personhood. Results: The semi-structured interviews revealed four themes: stakeholders, mentoring stages, mentoring relationships and professional identity formation whilst the mentoring diaries revealed two: mentoring processes and mentoring relationships. Two final domains emerged - mentoring relationships and professional identity formation. Conclusions: The Palliative Medicine Initiative's structured stage-based mentoring approach, trained stakeholders, curated environment, assessment-directed and personalized mentoring support reveal seven developmental stages of mentoring relationships. These culminate in changes to the values, beliefs and principles that shape how mentees see, feel and act as professionals. These findings suggest that mentoring programs may help to further develop and fine-tune their professional identity formation.
