Abstract:Carbon peaking and carbon neutralization trigger a technical revolution in energy & environment related fields. Development of new technologies for green energy production and storage, industrial energy saving and efficiency reinforcement, carbon capture, and pollutant gas treatment is in highly imperious demand. The emerging porous framework materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), owing to the permanent porosity, tremendous specific surface area, designable structure and customizable functionality, have shown great potential in major energy-consuming industrial processes, including sustainable energy gas catalytic conversion, energy-efficient industrial gas separation and storage. Herein, this manuscript presents a systematic review of porous framework materials for global and comprehensive energy & environment related applications, from a macroscopic and application perspective.

Abstract:Since the industrial revolution, the consumption of fossil fuels has increased year by year, which has resulted in increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon capture, utilization and storage technology has received extensive attention as a technology for converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into high value-added materials. Carbon materials, as ideal materials for various energy storage devices, have attracted extensive research. Therefore, the selective reduction of CO2 to carbon materials with high added value is a promising solution, which can not only effectively alleviate the greenhouse effect, but also promote the development of the energy storage field. This review introduces the research work of high-value conversion of carbon dioxide into carbon materials and its impact on the performance of energy storage devices in recent years. In particular, we emphasize the reaction processes during CO2 conversion, which can build an understanding of the science and technology involved in the control of interfacial properties, microstructure, and pore structure of CO2-converted carbon nanomaterials. We also summarized the basic design principles for the application of carbon nanomaterials in the field of energy storage. The effect of the microstructure and interface properties of carbon materials converted from CO2 on the energy storage performance are further analyzed. Finally, prospects and discussions are made on the challenges of future development.

Abstract:It is desirable for a sustainable society that the production and utilization of renewable materials are net‐zero in terms of carbon emissions. Carbon materials with emerging applications in CO2 utilization, renewable energy storage and conversion, and biomedicine have attracted much attention both academically and industrially. However, the preparation process of some new carbon materials suffers from energy consumption and environmental pollution issues. Therefore, the development of low‐cost, scalable, industrially and economically attractive, sustainable carbon material preparation methods are required. In this regard, the use of biomass and its derivatives as a precursor of carbon materials is a major feature of sustainability. Recent advances in the synthetic strategy of sustainable carbon materials and their emerging applications are summarized in this short review. Emphasis is made on the discussion of the original intentions and various sustainable strategies for producing sustainable carbon materials. This review provides basic insights and significant guidelines for the further design of sustainable carbon materials and their emerging applications in catalysis and the biomedical field.

Abstract:Functional porous carbon materials are at the forefront of current research due to their exceptional properties, making them highly sought after for various applications, including energy storage/conversion, sensing, adsorption, and catalysis. One crucial factor in producing carbon materials with specific uses and optimized functions is the selection of appropriate carbon precursors. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as game-changing precursors due to their adaptable molecular design and adjustable structures. As a result, they exhibit tremendous potential for the development of advanced carbon materials. In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in COF-derived carbon materials, and we try to comprehensively cover COF-derived carbon materials from their synthetic methods to specific applications. Focusing on the relationship between structure and properties in COF-derived carbon materials, mechanism during carbonization, morphology control strategies, and properties modulation approaches are highlighted, followed by their representative applications in the last 10 years. Moreover, despite the significant advances achieved to date, COF-derived carbon materials still suffer from some limitations. Thus, proposals on how to improve COF-derived carbon materials’ performance are also discussed, as well as future challenges and perspectives, aiming to provide concise yet informative guidelines for choosing suitable carbon materials for particular applications.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been a growing threat to human society. Selective capture of CO2 remains challenging with global importance. Recent works on porous materials demonstrated their potential and effectiveness in ameliorating the CO2 problem. This review will summarize the progress in advanced porous materials such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and porous organic polymers with tailored pore microenvironment and functionality for selective capture of CO2 over the past decade. The application of porous adsorbents for CO2 capture under important scenarios such as flue streams, biogas and direct air capture is presented. We discuss the design strategies for custom-made structure and functionality of porous materials that have led to high-performance CO2 capture with the separation efficiency (e.g., high capacity, selectivity, molecular sieving, moisture resistance) as well as efficient regeneration performance. In addition, this review also concludes the current existing challenges combined with potential directions for future development of porous materials towards industrial CO2 capture.

Abstract:Climate change is a growing threat to civilization. The major anthropogenic greenhouse gas is CO2, which is emitted principally from the combustion of mineral hydrocarbons. By 2100, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is expected to rise twofold due to increased vehicular emissions, deforestation, chemical processes, and fossil fuel-fired power plants. To this end, there is an urgent demand for adopting CO2 emissions mitigation strategies. Worldwide efforts have resulted in developing new and affordable CO2 reduction methods. The significant levels of CO2 released into the atmosphere can be diminished using diverse liquid and/or solid materials. The commonly used liquid sorption routes require expensive regeneration and produce harmful by-products. Therefore, this review focuses on the use of carbon-based materials (CBMs) for CO2 capture. In principle, CBMs have the potential for industrial applications due to their cost efficiency, desirable regeneration, and ability to physically uptake considerable amounts of CO2. The present paper aims to discuss the fundamental mechanism of CO2 capture on the most commonly investigated CBMs in the last five years. Besides, it provides a comprehensive study of significant progress in designing and synthesizing CBMs, including nanotubes, aerogels, composites, and biomass derivatives, with their adsorption potential for CO2. Noteworthy, progress has been made in this subject; nevertheless, further investigations are still necessary. Finally, several perspectives are discussed in light of recent studies regarding sustainable CO2 capture development.

Abstract:The rapid increase of the CO2 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere has resulted in numerous environmental issues, such as global warming, ocean acidification, melting of the polar ice, rising sea level, and extinction of species. To search for suitable and capable catalytic systems for CO2 conversion, electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) holds great promise. Emerging heterogeneous carbon materials have been considered as promising metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR, owing to their abundant natural resources, tailorable porous structures, resistance to acids and bases, high-temperature stability, and environmental friendliness. They exhibit remarkable CO2RR properties, including catalytic activity, long durability, and high selectivity. Here, various carbon materials (e.g., carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, diamond, nanoporous carbon, and graphene dots) with heteroatom doping (e.g., N, S, and B) that can be used as metal-free catalysts for the CO2RR are highlighted. Recent advances regarding the identification of active sites for the CO2RR and the pathway of reduction of CO2 to the final product are comprehensively reviewed. Additionally, the emerging challenges and some perspectives on the development of heteroatom-doped carbon materials as metal-free electrocatalysts for the CO2RR are included.

Abstract:The excessive emission of CO2 causes severe environmental problems. Sustainable CO2 management based on carbon capture and utilization plays important role in addressing emission-control issue. Among various routes, synergistic coupling between CO2 capture and conversion brings prospects for energy conservation by simultaneously avoiding the energy-intensive regeneration, compression and transportation steps in conventional sequential pathway. Herein, this review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in promising materials for integrated capture and conversion of CO2 in terms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and thermochemical CO2 hydrogenation. The integrated electrochemical process eliminates the critical issues faced by CO2 gas-fed electrolysers, and integrated thermochemical process performing in a single reactor under isothermal conditions benefits from lower energy consumption and less capital investment. Rational design and precise manipulation of key adsorbents/absorbents and catalysts and the influence of interactions between them are discussed. Several considerations are put forward from industrial application perspectives and potential development directions of materials and systems that boost the high selectivity towards valuable products. This review highlights the major challenges and emerging opportunities in integrated CO2 capture and utilization systems, which provides guidance for future investigations.

Abstract:The use of fossil fuels leads to significant CO2 emissions, thus highlighting the importance for investigating the utilization of CO2 for generating high-value chemical products toward achieving the dual-carbon goal. CO2 can be efficiently used in synthesizing valuable organic compounds through C-C, C-O, C-H, and C-N bond construction, with reduction technologies effectively converting CO2 to organic carbon sources. Therefore, the research in developing environmentally friendly catalysts for efficient and renewable CO2 conversion holds great importance. New materials for catalytic conversion include zeolites, activated carbon, graphene, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), ionic liquids, semiconducting photocatalysts, single-atom catalysts (SACs), and dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). The proper research and use of these materials can aid in the quest to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. This Review focuses on the utilization of single-atom catalysts (SACs), ionic liquids (ILs), dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), and carbene-metal catalytic systems in CO2 conversion. The potential for new materials in catalyzing the conversion of CO2 is examined by analyzing various common chemical carbon sequestration methods, ultimately providing possible research directions for effective solutions to climate and environmental pollution problems. On the basis of the high reaction rate and high treatment efficiency of the catalyst for the catalytic conversion of CO2, the Review focuses on the simpler and more economical synthesis method of the catalyst itself and the wider application prospects.

Abstract:CO2, despite its role as the primary greenhouse gas, is well-accepted as the most affordable and abundant nontoxic C1 source. Integrated CO2 capture and conversion (ICCC) is an emerging and promising process capable of reducing CO2 emissions and in-situ producing value-added products such as CH4 and syngas. This article reviews the recent research progress on the ICCC process, with an emphasis on the development of dual function materials (DFMs). The ICCC process with the combination of different CO2 catalytic conversions is first discussed from a thermodynamic point of view. The influence of operation parameters on the performance of DFMs is also summarized in detail. Then, the development of DFMs categorized by the catalytic component (i.e., Ni, Ru, etc.) is reviewed, including their performance and potential reaction mechanisms. Finally, the challenges and prospects of the ICCC process are highlighted.

Abstract:Functional porous material has excellent adsorption and storage performance.CO2 adsorption technique plays a significant role in controling the greenhouse effect and reduceing CO2 emissions for coal-fired power plant,glass kiln,cement plant and steel plant.Novel CO2 adsorbents were endowed with the characteristic as low cost,good accessibility,and high adsorption rate.Present research focused on the surface functionalization of porous silica,metal organic frameworks,zeolite,activated carbon and polymer materials.The paper summariezd the latest achievements on representative adsorbents functionalization,and also introduced progresses on functionalization protocols,adsorption mechanism and kinetics of porous adsorbents.Moreover,the future research space and development trend of porous materials for CO2 adsorption were proposed.
