Abstract:Electron cloud interactions with high-energy beams are believed,. responsible, for various undesirable effects ranging from vacuum degradation to collective beam instabilities. An important source of uncertainty in predicting electron cloud effects for a given machine lies in understanding in detail the processes relating to the generation of the cloud. The Advanced Photon Source (APS) has taken a lead role in the development of techniques for and the interpretation of direct measurements of the electron cloud distribution. Through such data, good progress has been made in placing realistic limits on critical input parameters in computer models relating to cloud production for actual accelerator chamber surfaces and geometries. Specially constructed electron detectors, using designs based on those first implemented at the APS storage ring, have been installed or are planned at a number of electron, positron, and proton rings to directly measure the properties of the electron cloud. Highlights will be presented of recent results from the APS, and a comparison is made between measurements at the APS and recent results at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. These results illuminate machine conditions in which secondary processes become important

Abstract:Fermilab Booster synchrotron requires an intensity upgrade from 4.5x1012 to 6.5x1012 protons per pulse as a part of Fermilab's Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II). One of the factors which may limit the high-intensity performance is the fast transverse instabilities caused by electron cloud effects. According to the experience in the Recycler, the electron cloud gradually builds up over multiple turns inside the combined function magnets and can reach final intensities orders of magnitude greater than in a pure dipole. Since the Booster synchrotron also incorporates combined function magnets, it is important to measure the presence of electron cloud. The presence or apparent absence of the electron cloud was investigated using two different methods: measuring bunch-by-bunch tune shift by changing the bunch train structure at different intensities and propagating a microwave carrier signal through the beampipe and analyzing the phase modulation of the signal. This paper presents the results of the two methods and corresponding simulation results conducted using PyECLOUD software.

Abstract:Operation of the B-Factories (PEP-II and KEKB) has been very successful, both having exceeded their design peak and integrated luminosity and provided a huge amount of good data to the experiments. Proposal for upgrades, in order to achieve about two order of magnitude larger luminosity, are in progress in Japan, with Super-KEKB, and in Europe, with SuperB. Very high beam intensity, very short bunch length and low Interaction Point beta-functions are the key points of the Japanese design, very challenging for the hardware components (RF, vacuum). On the other hand SuperB exploits a new collision scheme, namely large Piwinski angle and "crab waist", which will allow to reach a luminosity two order of magnitude larger without increasing beam currents and decreasing bunch lengths. In this talk the present status of the two projects will be reviewed.

Electron cloud experiments at Fermilab: Formation and mitigation

Abstract:We have performed a series of experiments at Fermilab to explore the electron cloud phenomenon. The Main Injector will have its beam intensity increased four-fold in the Project X upgrade, and would be subject to instabilities from the electron cloud. We present measurements of the cloud formation in the Main Injector and experiments with materials for the mitigation of the Cloud. An experimental installation of Titanium-Nitride (TiN) coated beam pipes has been under study in the Main Injector since 2009; this material was directly compared to an adjacent stainless chamber through electron cloud measurement with Retarding Field Analyzers (RFAs). Over the long period of running we were able to observe the secondary electron yield (SEY) change and correlate it with electron fluence, establishing a conditioning history. Additionally, the installation has allowed measurement of the electron energy spectrum, comparison of instrumentation techniques, and energy-dependent behavior of the electron cloud. Finally, a new installation, developed in conjunction with Cornell and SLAC, will allow direct SEY measurement of material samples irradiated in the accelerator.

Abstract:Since April 2020, the SuperKEKB has been operating with the crab waist scheme. The luminosity record achieved in June 2022 was 4.71 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 , which overtook its predecessor KEKB by more than a factor of 2. The beam-beam interaction plays a key role in causing vertical blowup and consequently limiting the luminosity performance of SuperKEKB. In this paper, we examine luminosity tunings under the influence of beam-beam effects and review the luminosity performance of SuperKEKB with the crab-waist operation from 2020 to 2022.

Abstract:A two-ring electron-positron collider with asymmetric energies—called the SuperKEKB—has been designed by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) as an upgrade of the KEKB B-factory (KEKB), which completed 12 years of operation in 2010. It is anticipated that the SuperKEKB will reach a luminosity of 8 × 1035 cm−2 s−1, which is approximately 40 times larger than that of the original KEKB. The upgrade of the vacuum system is a key factor that will allow the SuperKEKB to achieve unprecedented high performance. Most of the beam pipes, especially in the positron ring, are newly manufactured to manage the electron cloud effect, and to reduce beam impedance, which is essential to keep the low-emittance beam stable. Our design of the vacuum system implements recent technologies and draws on various experiences and studies during the operation of the original KEKB. The basic design is near completion, and manufacturing of beam pipes and the major vacuum components, such as bellows chambers, gate valves and supports, are in progress. The installation of these components will start in 2013 with the aim of commissioning the SuperKEKB in 2014.

Abstract:The beam-beam interaction is one of the most critical factors determining the luminosity performance of colliders. As a circular collider utilizing the crab-waist scheme, multiple factors, such as beam-beam, crab waist, impedances, etc., interact to determine the luminosity of SuperKEKB. The interplay of these factors makes it challenging to predict luminosity via simulations. This paper presents recent advances in understanding the luminosity performance of SuperKEKB from beam-beam simulations and experiments. The key aspects affecting the luminosity of SuperKEKB, as well as the areas where further research is needed, are highlighted.

Abstract:A vertical collective effect suspected as photoelectron instability (PEI) has been observed at Photon Factory (PF) of KEK in recent years. This phenomena may impose a limitation on the performance of the proposed B-Factories or T-c Factories. An experiment has been planned to test it using positron beam at Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) in 1996 under the cooperation between IHEP and KEK. Preliminary simulation results have shown that the PEI may occur in BEPC on the total beam current level of 40 mA over more than 20 bunches. The instrumentation for observation of PEI is jointly prepared by both sides of IHEP and KEK. The machine study has been scheduled and the experiment will progress under the conditions of the best machine performance.
Super KEKB and Belle II: Status of the KEK Super B Factory

Abstract:The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected approximately 800 million Upsilon(4S) events in its decade of operation. The KEKB group has proposed Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35/cm^2/s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed, with a broader participation of European institutes. Super-KEKB and Belle-II were officially placed on the KEK 5-year Roadmap in early 2008. The paper presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector. More details are given on the DEPFET pixel detector that will be completely built in Europe.

Abstract:The electron cloud instability (ECI), which takes place in positively charged particle circular accelerators, is studied both experimentally and theoretically in the recent years. Many ECI-related experiments, including electron cloud (EC) measurement, beam parameter dependences, instability cure, etc., have been carried out on the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) since 1996. A great number of fruitful results are obtained from these experiments, which also influence the simulation studies in the meantime. Ways to control the ECI are also studied in the experiments. Some achievements are beneficial for the BEPCII, the upgraded project of BEPC in the near future.

Abstract:Electron cloud instability (ECI) may take place in a storage ring when the machine is operated with multi-bunch positively charged beam. According to the actual shape of vacuum chamber in BEPC II, a computer simulation program has been developed. With the code I the electron density in the chamber with the different widths of antechamber and the different secondary electron yields, respectively, can be obtained. The possibility to put clearing electrodes in the normal chamber or ante-chamber to reduce the electron density in the central region of the chamber is also investigated. In the simulation, the coherent oscillation of bunches and the formation of electron cloud (EC) are tracked simultaneously. The sideband distribution and growth rate can be obtained through tracking and dealing the bunch oscillation amplitude with FIT. Based on the head-tail model, the single bunch instability induced by EC is also studied. By the simulation, for BEPC H the threshold density for the single bunch instability is estimated to be similar to 10(12)m(-3) and the restraining measures that might be adopted in BEPC 11 can control the EC density under the threshold. According to the simulation results, a relatively big positive chromaticity should be used to suppress the bunch blow up.

Abstract:A vertical coupled-bunch instability was observed for a positron beam at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC). The experimental results show that the instability has similar characteristics as that observed in the Photon Factory of KEK several years ago. The instability at BEPC can be explained by the effect of an electron cloud which is produced in the beam chamber by synchrotron light hitting the wall.

Abstract:We report on extensive measurements at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring of electron-cloud-induced betatron tune shifts for trains of positron bunches at 2.1 and 5.3 GeV with bunch populations ranging between 0.64x10^10 and 9.6x10^10. Measurements using a witness bunch with variable distance from the end of the train and variable bunch population provide information on cloud decay and cloud pinching during the bunch passage. We employ Monte Carlo simulations of the reflection and absorption of synchrotron radiation photons to determine the pattern of absorption sites around the circumference of the storage ring. The Geant4 simulation toolkit is used to model the interactions of the photons with the beampipe wall and determine the production energy and location distributions of the photoelectrons which seed the electron cloud. An electron cloud buildup model based on fitted ring-averaged secondary-yield properties of the vacuum chamber predicts tune shifts in good agreement with the measurements.

Abstract:The search of nuclear bound states of $${\bar{K}}$$ in few-body nuclear systems such as K−pp, can be extended from the nuclear medium to the vacuum, using the glue-rich $${\Upsilon(1S)}$$ decays at B-factories. Here the possibility for such a measurement at the future SuperB factory is discussed.

Abstract:During the current run of an electron-positron collider DAFNE special electrodes for electron cloud suppression have been inserted in all dipole and wiggler magnets of the positron ring. In this paper we discuss the impact of these electrodes on beam dynamics and overall collider performance. In particular we report results of measurements such as e-cloud instabilities growth rate, transverse beam size variation, tune shifts along the bunch train etc. with the electrodes switched on and off that clearly indicate the effectiveness of the electrodes for e-cloud suppression.

Abstract:Theoretical estimations of production cross sections of light $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ hypernuclei in $(e,e'K^{+})$ reactions at around CEBAF energies are given. Because of dominant spin-flip amplitudes and large momentum transfers, unnatural parity states and stretched states of hypernuclei are favorably excited. They are compared with quasifree hyperon productions.

Abstract:Electron cloud instability (ECI) may take place in a positron storage ring when the machine is operated with a multi-bunch positron beam. According to the actual shape of the vacuum chamber in the BEPCII, a programme which is different from the other simulation codes has been developed. Because of the distance between dipole magnet and sextupole, the quadrupole magnet of BEPCII is very short, much of the photoelectrons can be produced and can move in magnetic fields. The motion of electrons in various kinds of magnetic fields is studied in detail, especially for the solenoid field which will be wound in the vacuum pipe of BEPCII. Simulation shows that the solenoid field is very effective to confine the electrons to the vicinity of the vacuum chamber wall and to make an electron free region at the vacuum pipe Centre.
