Abstract:The beam-beam interaction is one of the most critical factors determining the luminosity performance of colliders. As a circular collider utilizing the crab-waist scheme, multiple factors, such as beam-beam, crab waist, impedances, etc., interact to determine the luminosity of SuperKEKB. The interplay of these factors makes it challenging to predict luminosity via simulations. This paper presents recent advances in understanding the luminosity performance of SuperKEKB from beam-beam simulations and experiments. The key aspects affecting the luminosity of SuperKEKB, as well as the areas where further research is needed, are highlighted.

Abstract:The SuperKEKB/Belle II experiment aims to collect high-statistics data of B meson pairs to explore new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). SuperKEKB, an upgraded version of the KEKB accelerator, has achieved a world-record luminosity of $4.71 \times 10^{34} \, \mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$ in 2022 but continues to strive for higher luminosities. One of the major obstacles is Sudden Beam Loss (SBL) events, which cause substantial beam losses and damage to the Belle~II detector. To find a hint for addressing SBL challenges, advanced beam diagnostic systems and enhanced beam abort systems have been developed. The diagnostic system aims to accurately pinpoint the start of beam losses, while the upgraded abort system quickly disposes of anomalous beams to minimize damage. This paper details the development and implementation of these systems, including high-speed loss monitors, time synchronization with the White Rabbit system, and data acquisition systems. Efforts to understand the mechanisms of SBL events, using acoustic sensors to detect discharges, are also discussed. These measures aim to improve the operational stability and luminosity of SuperKEKB, contributing to the experiment's success.

Abstract:The SuperKEKB is an electron-positron double-ring asymmetric-energy collider at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Japan. It uses a novel collision method referred to as the nano-beam scheme to avoid the so-called hourglass effect. The highest peak luminosity achieved thus far is 4.65 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 , which was reached on June 8 th , 2022. Although the SuperKEKB holds the record for the world's highest instantaneous luminosity, several unresolved issues prevent a further increase in luminosity. One of the major issues is inadequate stability and reproducibility of the beam orbit and optics. This paper discusses optics distortion caused by orbit deviation near strong sextupole magnets. Numerical estimations indicate that a horizontal orbit deviation of a few tens of micrometers induces a sizable distortion of the optical functions at the interaction point. Analyses of the amount of betatron tune feedback and orbit at sextupole magnets used for crab waist and vertical local chromaticity correction indicate that the beam-current dependence of the vertical tune shift is attributable to the change of the beam orbit at the sextupoles. The orbit fluctuation at the sextupoles causes beta-beating and makes stable operation at high beam currents more difficult. The results show that orbit tuning at the sextupoles improves both the injection efficiency and the detector background level. Optics deterioration within a few days is another urgent issue in high-beam-current operation. A vertical orbit change of a few tens of microns at sextupole magnets installed in arc cells is a matter of concern according to numerical estimations.

Abstract:Since April 2020, the SuperKEKB has been operating with the crab waist scheme. The luminosity record achieved in June 2022 was 4.71 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 , which overtook its predecessor KEKB by more than a factor of 2. The beam-beam interaction plays a key role in causing vertical blowup and consequently limiting the luminosity performance of SuperKEKB. In this paper, we examine luminosity tunings under the influence of beam-beam effects and review the luminosity performance of SuperKEKB with the crab-waist operation from 2020 to 2022.

Abstract:At SuperKEKB, the maximum beam currents and the luminosity could be limited by the beam injection in the near future. We estimated requirements to the beam injection to achieve the next target luminosity of 1 × 10 35 cm -2 s -1 . Two cases of β y * = 1 mm and 0.8 mm are considered. A simulation shows that we need to suppress the emittance growth of the injecting positron beam in the beam transport (BT) line down to its design value to meet the requirement with β y * = 1 mm. In the case of β y * = 0.8 mm, we need to improve dynamic aperture of LER in addition to the suppression of the emittance growth. Efforts to improve the beam quantity and quality in LINAC and in BT are summarized. The present most serious problem concerning quality of the injecting beams is emittance growth in the BT lines for both electron and positron beams. Simulations and experiments show that the effects of ISR and CSR in the BT lines cause a large horizontal emittance growth of the electron beam. Several measures to suppress the emittance growth are under considerations.

Abstract:A two-ring electron-positron collider with asymmetric energies—called the SuperKEKB—has been designed by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) as an upgrade of the KEKB B-factory (KEKB), which completed 12 years of operation in 2010. It is anticipated that the SuperKEKB will reach a luminosity of 8 × 1035 cm−2 s−1, which is approximately 40 times larger than that of the original KEKB. The upgrade of the vacuum system is a key factor that will allow the SuperKEKB to achieve unprecedented high performance. Most of the beam pipes, especially in the positron ring, are newly manufactured to manage the electron cloud effect, and to reduce beam impedance, which is essential to keep the low-emittance beam stable. Our design of the vacuum system implements recent technologies and draws on various experiences and studies during the operation of the original KEKB. The basic design is near completion, and manufacturing of beam pipes and the major vacuum components, such as bellows chambers, gate valves and supports, are in progress. The installation of these components will start in 2013 with the aim of commissioning the SuperKEKB in 2014.

Abstract:The beam-ion interaction is a potential limitation of beam performance in electron accelerators, especially where the beam emittance is of a great concern in future ultra-low emittance light source. "Conventionally", the beam instability due to beam-ion interaction is attributed to two types of effects: ion trapping effect and fast ion effect, which emphasize the beam-ion dynamics in different time scales. Whereas, in accelerators, the beam suffers from a mixture of ion trapping effect and fast ion effect, leading to a more complicated process and requiring a self-consistent treatment. To evaluate the beam characteristics, as emittance growth under the influence from beam-ion effect, a new numerical simulation code based on the "quasi-strong-strong" model has been developed, including modules of ionization, beam-ion interaction, synchrotron radiation damping, quantum excitation, bunch-by-bunch feedback, etc. In the study, we do not regularly distinguish the ion trapping effect and the fast ion effect, but treat beam-ion interaction more generally and consistently. The lattice of High Energy Photon Source, a diffraction limit ring under construction in Beijing, is used as an example to show the beam-ion effect. It is found that in this low emittance ring, the beam-ion instability is not a dominant mechanism in operation mode with a high beam current, but seriously occurs in a lower beam current region. When the beam-ion instability were significantly driven and can not be damped by the synchrotron radiation damping, the simulations show the bunch-by-bunch feedback system based on the Finite Impulse Response filter technique can be adopted to mitigate it effectively.

Abstract:We first introduce the design parameters of the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider II (BEPCII) and the simulation study of beam-beam effects during the design process of the machine. The main advances since 2007 are briefly introduced and reviewed. The longitudinal feedback system was installed to suppress the coupled bunch instability in January 2010. The horizontal tune decreased from 6.53 to 6.508 during the course of data taken in December, 2010. The saturation of the beam-beam parameter was found in 2011, and the vacuum chambers and magnets near the north crossing point were moved 15 cm in order to mitigate the long range beam-beam interaction. At the beginning of 2013, the beam-beam parameter achieved 0.04 with the new lower $\alpha_{p}$ lattice and the peak luminosity achieved 7 x 10$^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$.

Abstract:Strong-strong beam-beam simulations for circular colliders are very time-consuming. Thus far, such simulations have predominantly utilized a linear transfer matrix to represent the full nonlinear lattice. Otherwise, when nonlinear lattices were included, beam-beam interactions were usually studied by using weak-strong or quasi-strong-strong numerical models. The next-generation circular colliders, including FCC-ee at CERN, CEPC in China, and the Super Tau-Charm Factories in China and Russia, will leverage the crab waist collision scheme with a large Piwinski angle. This scheme has already been employed in the two currently operational colliders, DAFNE and SuperKEKB. Accurate predictions of the performance of such colliders call for strong-strong beam-beam simulations, taking into account the interplay of the beam-beam interaction with lattice nonlinearities, beam-coupling impedances, and other collective effects. To answer this call, a novel code APES-T that allows integrating the direct strong-strong beam-beam simulations with element-by-element nonlinear tracking has been developed. To overcome the limitations in computing time, APES-T employs parallelization techniques. Specifically, the beam-beam module is parallelized using MPI programming, while the element-by-element tracking modules are parallelized using GPU programming. In this paper, we present the development of the APES-T code, its benchmark against the SAD code, and its application to the CEPC in investigating the interplay between beam-beam interaction, beamstrahlung, and lattices.

Optimization of RF phase and beam loading distribution among RF stations in SuperKEKB

Abstract:SuperKEKB is the e-/e+ collider which targets the world highest luminosity. In recent operation, SuperKEKB achieved a new world record of $4.71\times 10^{34} cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ for luminosity with the beam current of 1.4 A. In the future, the beam current will be increased further to aim at the design value of 3.6 A and much higher luminosity. The RF system consists of 38 cavities (30 klystron stations), which share the huge beam loading brought by high current beam with each other cavities. For beam stability and power efficiency, it is important to distribute the beam loading properly among RF cavities. It is equivalent to adjust the acceleration phase of each cavity. However, it is difficult to evaluate the acceleration phase using only the pickup signal. Therefore, we established a method to evaluate the beam loading balance among RF stations from the RF power measurement for each cavity, and to adjust the acceleration phase. This report introduces the method for evaluating and optimizing the beam loading (acceleration phase) among stations in SuperKEKB, which has a large number of RF stations, and its operation.

Abstract:SuperKEKB is an asymmetric electron-positron circular collider based on nano-beam scheme at interaction region and large beam current. Large beam current makes growth rates of longitudinal coupled-bunch instabilities (LCBI) large. Especially some lowest modes near accelerating frequency are serious. On the design parameter for SuperKEKB, $\mu$ = -1, -2, -3 mode of LCBI can be destabilized. We developed new LCBI damper to suppress newly arisen LCBI modes ($\mu$ = -1, -2, -3) in SuperKEKB. The new damper will be installed in Low Level RF control system. The new LCBI damper is independent of main LLRF control components. In the test bench measurement, our new LCBI damper has good performance and satisfied required specifications. For preparation of using LCBI damper, we produced the simulation of beam oscillation damped by RF feedback. The results of this simulation shows that we need more dampers than them we prepared. We report profile of new damper and results of test bench measurement and feedback simulation in this paper.

Abstract:KEKB completed all of the technical milestones, and had offered important insights into the flavor structure of elementary particles, especially the CP violation. The accelerator control system at KEKB and injector linac was initiated by a combination of scripting languages at the operation layer and EPICS at the equipment layer. During the project many features were implemented to achieve extreme performance out of the machine. Especially the online linkage to the accelerator simulation played an essential role. In order to further improve the reliability and flexibility two major concepts were additionally introduced later in the project, namely the channel access everywhere and the dual-tier controls. Based on the improved control system a concept of virtual accelerators were realized that enables the single injector linac serve as three separate injectors to KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory, respectively. Those control technologies are indispensable for the future particle accelerators.

Abstract:A beam photoelectron instability may arise in high energy storage rings when the multibunch positron beam interacts with the photoelectrons which are produced in the beam tube by synchrotron radiation. This instability gives rise to a big interest for the accelerator physicists in recent years as a new mechanism has been involved in this phenomenon study. It is very important for the particle factories as there are strong multi-bunch positron beams to be operated. The experimental observations art carried out in the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) under the cooperation between IHEP, China and KEK, Japan, and the simulation studies are presented in this paper.

Abstract:The high intensity deuteron linac, one of the drivers of BISOL, aims to accelerate a continuous wave (cw) deuteron beam up to 40 MeV with a beam current of 20 mA, which can also be operated independently as the Multi-Aimed Intense Neutron Source (MAINS). As the high beam power and beam current, high reliability and strict beam loss are demand for the deuteron driver linac. The beam dynamics design of the driver linac, including the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ), medium energy beam transport line (MEBT) and superconducting rf (SRF) linac, has been designed and optimized to meet the required requirements. In order to prevent halo formation and achieve strict beam losses, beam halo matching is implemented in our design. The simulation results predict a transmission efficiency of above 99% and the beam power losses meet requirements of less than l W/m in the SRF linac. Detailed error studies are performed to evaluate the sensitivity of the bean dynamics design at last. The general design considerations and the overall beam dynamics of the driver linac are presented in this paper.

Abstract:A timing system provides high-precision signals to allow the controls over a variety of hardware and software components in the accelerator complex. This is guaranteed by the radio frequency (RF) and trigger signal synchronization for subsystems such as klystrons, pulsed magnets, and beam monitors. The main trigger signal should be distributed throughout the facility and repeated at the beam repetition rate. This trigger signal is usually generated by the same phase of an AC power line to follow the source of the fluctuation of an electrical grid and reduce the unwanted variation of the beam quality. To fulfill the needs of the multi-accelerator facility at KEK, apart from the normal trigger synchronization and bucket selection injection control, a beam operation scheme called the pulse-to-pulse modulation is utilized; hence, the complexity of the timing system increases. Uncertainty in the system and a trigger signal delivery error caused by a drastic AC power line drift are observed. Further, the effort to establish a reliable timing system at KEK and several solutions to improve the system robustness are presented.

Beam dynamics study of the high-power electron beam irradiator using niobium-tin superconducting cavity

Abstract:A compact accelerator design for irradiation purposes is being proposed at KEK. This design targets an energy of 10 MeV and a current of 50 mA. Current design includes a 100 kV thermionic DC electron gun with an RF grid, 1-cell normal-conducting buncher cavity, and Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting cavities to accelerate the beam to the final energy of 10 MeV. The goal of the present beam dynamics study is the beam loss suppression (to the ppm level), since it results in a thermal load on the cavity. Then the beam performance at the accelerator exit should be confirmed. The main issue was to transport the beam without loss, since the initial electron energy (100 keV) is low, and the beam parameters are intricately correlated. In addition, the space charge effect is considerable. For this reason, simultaneous optimization of multiple parameters was necessary. Here we report optimization results and their effect on the design of the machine.

Abstract:The commissioning of the upgrade project of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII) started on Nov. 12, 2006. During the 1 and 2 stages of the commissioning of the BEPCII rings, we had got the luminosity one tenth of its design value, provided beams to synchrotron radiation users for ~ 4 months, and studied beam dynamics as well. In this paper, some preliminary results of the beam dynamics will be given. INTRODUCTION The upgrade project of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC), BEPCII, is mainly composed of a linac, two transport lines and two storage rings in parallel for eand e+ beams, respectively. The two halves of the outer rings are connected as a synchrotron radiation (SR) ring, with 14 beam lines extracted from 5 wigglers and 9 bending magnets. The layout and other details of the three rings of BEPCII can be found in [1]. In this paper, we mainly discuss some beam current dependent phenomena in the collision rings, say, BER and BPR for eand e+ beams, respectively. Some main nominal parameters of the lattice are listed in Table 1. Figure 1 shows the Twiss functions in the interaction region, the RF region and the whole ring. In order to have a big emittance and a high beam current, a quasi-FODO structure with 10 dipoles and 2 missing dipoles in each arc is applied. In the second section, we will discuss the single bunch beam dynamics studies. Multi-bunch beam effects will be introduced in section 3. Some instabilities were observed and showed in section 4. At last, a summary will be given. Figure 1: Twiss functions in the IR (up-left), the RF region (up-right) and the whole ring (down) of BER/BPR SINGLE BUNCH BEAM DYNAMICS Optics correction After beams were injected smoothly into the rings, the β functions along the rings are measured before and after the optics corrections based on the measured response matrices [2]. The relative errors between the nominal and measured beta functions are less then 10% averagely. Other Twiss functions, such as dispersions and transverse tunes, were also measured and close to the design values. Under these circumstances, we could do some beam observations and measurements of other parameter. Beam energy spread Beam energy spread was measured with the method of longitudinal quantum lifetime. If the RF voltage is set to keep a relatively short beam lifetime, say 20 or 30 min, thus the longitudinal quantum lifetime can be considered as the dominant one. The beam energy spread at different bunch current could be estimated with the longitudinal momentum acceptance.
