Abstract:This paper presents a three-dimensional(3D) volumetric display system utilizing a rotating light-emitting diode (LED) array panel, which provides viewers with true depth cues, binocular parallax, accommodation and convergence, etc., and can be observed from any directions horizontally without the need of any special viewing aids. An experimental display system which can provide more than 8 million voxels in a cylinder display space has been developed. Now a new system that uses small size, high brightness, full color SMD LEDs as voxels and can provide at most more than 200 million voxels with a diameter of 800mm and a height of 640mm cylinder display space is being implemented.

Abstract:Using light field reconstruction technique, we can display a floating 3D scene in the air, which is 360-degree surrounding viewable with correct occlusion effect. A high-frame-rate color projector and flat light field scanning screen are used in the system to create the light field of real 3D scene in the air above the spinning screen. The principle and display performance of this approach are investigated in this paper. The image synthesis method for all the surrounding viewpoints is analyzed, and the 3D spatial resolution and angular resolution of the common display zone are employed to evaluate display performance. The prototype is achieved and the real 3D color animation image has been presented vividly. The experimental results verified the representability of this method. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, an off-axis reflective projection lens with single Fresnel reflective surface and three aspheric surfaces were designed. The design method of reflective lens using spherical Fresnel surface is discussed. The MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) of the off-axis reflective lens, with optical magnification 100×, F-number 2.5 and field of view 120°, is over 40% at 0.6lp/mm on the image side, the distortion is less than 2%. This design method can provide reference for application of Fresnel surface in wide field of view imaging, and possesses a bright future with the continuous development of fabrication technique.

Abstract:One of the common approaches to achieving vertical parallax for the horizontal-parallax-only light-field display is to introduce the viewer-tracking method. A panoramic camera is assembled in a 360 deg scanning light-field display system for the full-parallax demand in this study, wherein the image generation algorithm is improved to be sensitive to multiple viewer positions, and the tracking and rendering are processed in real time. The horizontal-parallax-only light-field display using a panoramic camera is determined to be able to achieve smooth and consecutive full-parallax performance for multiple viewers in a 360 deg range.

Abstract:This paper proposes a 360-deg large-scale multiprojection light-field 3D display system, which can reconstruct the light field of models in real space. The reconstructed contents can be observed by multiple viewers from different angles and positions simultaneously. In this system, 360 projectors project images onto a cylindrical light-field diffusion screen whose height is 1.8 m and diameter is 3 m. When moving around the system, viewers can see 3D scenes with smooth-motion parallax, and the frame rate can reach 30 fps and above. To achieve a large-scale display, we design a wide-field lens with cylindrical lenses to enlarge the projection image. To promote efficiency of data transmission and render 3D contents in real time, we apply computers equipped with multiple graphic cards, and display data are divided by field programmable gate array. Finally, a 360-deg light-field autocalibration method based on CCD and multiview sampling is proposed, whose calibration effect is strongly confirmed by experiment results. Abstract:A scalable system to achieve large-sized light field three-dimensional display using multi-projectors and directional diffuser is presented. The system mainly employs an array of mini-projectors projecting images onto a special cylindrical directional diffuser screen. The principle of light field reconstruction, configuration of multi-projectors style, and characteristics of directional diffuser are explicitly analyzed, respectively. A prototype of a piece of equipment in mini-cinema class is proposed, with 100 mini-projectors and a special cylindrical directional diffuser performing different diffuse angles in horizontal and vertical directions. Bright and large-sized three-dimensional images displayed by the system can be observed at different horizontal viewing positions around the cylindrical display area with stereo parallax and motion parallax. A novel full-parallax three dimensional display

Abstract:A full-parallax three dimensional display was proposed in this paper. It can display 3D images with 45 views, including 9 horizontal views by 5 vertical views. The angle pitches between two horizontal views and two vertical views are both 4.77 degree. The resolution and the size of the 3D images displayed are 226*226pixels and 30*30 cm2. The display system contains a LCD display, a lens array, and a directional diffuser. The resolution and the size of the LCD display are 1920*1080pixels and 23 inches. The lens array consists of 45 Fresnel lens. The horizontal and vertical diffuse angles of the directional diffuser are both 4.77 degree.

Abstract:Concave micro-mirror arrays fabricated as holographic optical elements are used in projector-based light field displays due to their see-through characteristics. The optical axes of each micro-mirror in the array are usually made parallel to each other, which simplifies the fabrication, integral image rendering, and calibration process. However, this demands that the beam from the projector be collimated and made parallel to the optical axis of each elemental micro-mirror. This requires additional collimation optics, which puts serious limitations on the size of the display. In this Letter, we propose a solution to the above issue by introducing a new method to fabricate holographic concave micro-mirror array sheets and explain how they work in detail. 3D light field reconstructions of the size 20 cm×10 cm and 6 cm in depth are achieved using a conventional projector without any collimation optics.

Abstract:The traditional flat-panel display technology cannot satisfy the display effect of 360 degrees viewing angle and high resolution. A 360 degrees floating display system based on human eye tracking is proposed. The multi-camera eye tracking algorithm is used to obtain the observer viewpoint position in real time, and the corresponding view angle picture is generated by OpenGL. In order to realize 360 degrees display, a catadioptric cylindrical projection optical system is designed. In order to make full use of the limited resolution of the projector, a half-circle display scheme is proposed. In order to display the correct image, a predistortion correction method based on Bezier surface and a polar coordinate system conversion method are proposed, and the 360 degrees horizontal viewing angle and vertical viewing angle with a certain range of the system are finally realized. The experimental results show that the proposed system can achieve static or dynamic floating display effects with high resolution and low cost.

Abstract:We utilized a high-frame-rate projector, a rotating mirror, and a cylindrical selective-diffusing screen to present a novel three-dimensional (3D) omnidirectional-view display system without the need for any special viewing aids. The display principle and image size are analyzed, and the common display zone is proposed. The viewing zone for one observation place is also studied. Abstract:A large-scale multi-projection light-field 3D display system based on multi-view sampling calibration was proposed.In this system 360 projectors were arranged in a circle under an anisotropic cylindrical diffuser with 3 m diagmeter and 1.8 m height and projecting images onto the diffuser.Light field of 3D scenes was accurately reconstructed inside the screen and can be observed by multiple viewers from different angles and positions simultaneously around 360°,as well as providing smooth motion parallax.Rendering frame rate of dynamic scenes can achieve 30 frame/s and above,offering fluent visual experience.To realize this system,a wide-field projection lens with cylindrical lenses was designed to enlarge image of the projectors.Then an automatic light-field calibration method based on multi-view sampling was proposed to eliminate distortion,which was induced by non-linear distortion of the projection lens and system assembly error,from the projection images.After calibration,light field projected by 360 projectors can be fuszed together seamlessly.

Abstract:A novel full-parallax 3D display approach and image generating algorithm are demonstrated. The display system employs a panel display monitor, an array of mini-projectors, a rear projecting light beam and a special orthogonal diffuser. Image generation program is operated based on OpenGL programming. In order to validate the proposed theory based on spliced view-field, a compact prototype-equipment with LCD, Fresnel lens, directional diffuser and rear projecting structure is proposed. The 3D images and dynamic videos displayed by the system can be observed at different horizontal and vertical viewpoints, with more compact size and better use experience.

Abstract:How to generate a real 3D image in the space which can be viewed by the many observers around the display with their naked eyes, is the dream of ideal display technique. In this paper, the latest developed real spatial 3D display techniques in Zhejiang University will be presented on the base of light filed controlling technique. These techniques permitted to create 3D scene in the space and with very high density viewing field, so that can be seen as a "holo-view" display. Different light filed controlling techniques: light filed scanning technique and light field integrated technique will be reviewed in the presentation.

Abstract:We have developed a novel 360‐degree transparent light field display with 120 viewpoints for fully volumetric 3D video experience. It was achieved by a rotating cylindrical transparent highly‐directional holographic screen and a high‐frame‐rate projector. It enables multiple people to simultaneously view bright and occlusion‐capable volumetric images from any direction.

The display could present 3D images with 45 views comprising 9 horizontal views by 5 vertical views. The resolution and size of the 3D images displayed are 226?226 pixels and 300?300 (mm). The new directional diffuser consisting of two perpendicular lenticular sheets can be widely used in the display domain owing to its low cost and simple process.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) color display with 360 degrees omnidirectional views is developed by use of a high frame rate digital micromirror device projector and three-color light-emitting diodes as the light source. The high-speed projector can project a series of color images on a rotating anisotropic diffusing mirror that controls the reflective light in a designed angular region. Observers around the display scene can watch autostereoscopic views from the ominidirectional 360 deg view around the 3D display. The vivid 3D scene can be obtained with perfect color effect and correct parallax, projection effect, and occlusion. The principle of the omnidirectional view 3D color display is analyzed in detail and experimental results of a 3D color object are presented.

Abstract:Traditional hand-held light field cameras only observe a small fraction of the cone of light emitted by a scene point. As a consequence, the study of interesting angular effects like iridescence are beyond the scope of such cameras. This paper envisions a new design for sensing light fields with wide baselines, so as to sense a significantly larger fraction of the cone of light emitted by scene points. Our system achieves this by imaging the scene, indirectly, through an ellipsoidal mirror. We show that an ellipsoidal mirror maps a wide cone of light from locations near one of its foci to a narrower cone at its other focus; thus, by placing a conventional light field camera at a focus, we can observe a wide-baseline light field from the scene near the other focus. We show via simulations and a lab prototype that wide-baseline light fields excel in the traditional applications involving changes in focus and perspective. Additionally, the larger cone of light that they observe allows the study of iridescence and thin-film interference. Perhaps surprisingly, the larger cone of light allows us to estimate surface normals of scene points by reasoning about their visibility.
