Abstract:Aqueous aluminum-air batteries have attracted tremendous interest because of their inherent safety and low cost. However, their lifespan is limited by the severe self-corrosion at the aluminum anode. Herein, a design strategy is presented to suppress the corrosion by modifying the aluminum/electrolyte interface. Adding hybrid additives (ellagic acid and sodium stannate) can significantly reduce the corrosion rate of aluminum anode (0.7667 mg cm−2 min−1 in the blank electrolyte and 0.3662 mg cm−2 min−1 in the electrolyte with hybrid additives). The aluminum-air full battery can achieve a higher discharge specific capacity of 2439 mAh g−1. Spectral characterization and theoretical calculation confirm that the corrosion inhibition is attributed to a composite protective film formed on the aluminum surface. This strategy has proven to be general in preventing metal corrosion.

Abstract:A long-term hurdle for Al-air batteries is the severe open-circuit corrosion, irreversibly self-discharging more than 80% per month depending on the battery design. In this work, we introduce an ionic liquid-ethylene glycol system as a local water-in-salt electrolyte to modify the conventional aqueous solution. At the same time, synergistic effect between morin and ionic liquid is employed to further reduce the salt component, as well as improving the performance. Experiments such as electrochemical test, surface analysis and theoretical calculations prove that the additives can modulate the anodic interface and restrain the free water molecules through hydrogen bond. Thus, Al-6061 anode suffers low parasitic corrosion rate and gains stable surface. Furthermore, the performance of assembled aluminum air battery is greatly improved with an excellent specific capacity of 2010 mAh/g, reliable cycle stability and anode utilization.

Abstract:Aqueous electrolyte is one of the most favored choices for various high-energy, low-cost and safe batteries. However, the undesired parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially on high reactive metal anodes, brought by aqueous electrolyte remains the development bottleneck of these batteries. Here, introducing solvents to manipulate the hydrogen-bond network of aqueous electrolyte is proposed to suppress the parasitic HER. Significantly, theoretical simulations and experimental characterizations demonstrate that donor number of the solvents could serve as a descriptor to ability of confining the free water and reducing the water activity. The solvent additive with high donor number exhibits remarkable suppression on the self-discharge and hydrogen evolution of Al anodes in alkaline electrolyte, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with an outstanding energy density of 3106.04 Wh kg(-1). The findings not only provide a guidance on the rational design of aqueous electrolyte but also expand the application of high-donor solvents.

Abstract:The self-corrosion of aluminum anodes is one of the key issues that hinder the development and application of low-cost and high-energy-density Al-air batteries (AABs). Herein, a hybrid corrosion inhibitor combining ZnO and acrylamide (AM) was developed to construct a dense protective interface on the Al anode to suppress the self-corrosion and enhance the electrochemical performance of AABs. Also, the results show that the hydrogen evolution rate with the optimal combination of hybrid inhibitors is 0.0848 mL cm-2 min-1, corresponding to the inhibition efficiency of 78.03%. The integrated AABs with hybrid inhibitors show remarkable capacities of 1240.6 mA h g-1 (25 mA cm-2) and 2444.1 mA h g-1 (100 mA cm-2) and a high power density of 63.7 mW cm-2. This shows that ZnO dissolves into the electrolyte and forms a loose and porous film on the Al surface. When AM is introduced into the ZnO-containing electrolyte, the adsorption of the amide group of AM on the surface of aluminum and ZnO occurs, which not only controls the growth morphology of ZnO but also enables ZnO to easily aggregate into a layer that is in close contact with the anode, efficiently suppressing self-corrosion. This work opens up the prospect of a corrosion inhibition mechanism for ZnO and AM in alkaline solutions and for developing effective organic/inorganic hybrid inhibitors.

Abstract:Aqueous metal-based batteries have attracted great attention due to their high energy density and high safety. However, currently suppressing the severe parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes remains challenging. Here, a novel "two birds with one stone " strategy of simultaneously reducing water activity and constructing a protective layer on Al anode with a green and low-cost glucose additive is proposed to suppress the HER. Theoretical studies and experimental characterizations confirm that the glucose additive could reduce water activity via the "molecular crowding effect " and form an organic protective layer on Al metal via chemical adsorption. The dual-functional glucose additive exhibits significant suppression on the HER and self-discharge of Al-metal anodes, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with ultra-high specific capacity of 2886.7 mAh gAl(-1) and energy density of 3675.1 Wh kgAl(-1). This study not only blazes a new path for suppressing HER on Al-metal anodes but also casts new light on aqueous electrolyte design and the stabilization of metal anodes.

Abstract:In this manuscript, an introduced ionic liquids-ethylene glycol-KOH electrolyte system is proposed. Theoretical calculations and experiments show that ionic liquids with stronger hydrophobicity provide better corrosion inhibition for their spontaneous adsorption behavior and water molecule segregation. In this process, the imidazole ring cations play a major role. The electrolyte system reconstructs the Al/electrolyte interface with poor H 2 O, thus has lower self-corrosion rate for [BMIM]PF 6 and contributes to the uniform dissolution of Al anode. Additionally, discharge performance of the full-cell feature same trend, endowing an outstanding capacity of 1971 mAh g −1 and anode utilization of 66.2% in alkaline [BMIM]PF 6 -ethylene glycol electrolyte. In terms of maintaining the activity of the Al-6061 anode whilst keeping low corrosion rate level, the proposed electrolyte system seems to be potential alternative.

Abstract:Aqueous-based Al-ion batteries are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries due to their safety, high volumetric energy density, abundance, and recyclability. Although aluminum-ion batteries are attractive, there are major challenges to overcome, which include understanding the nature of the passive layer of aluminum oxide on the aluminum anode, the narrow electrochemical window of aqueous electrolytes, and lack of suitable cathodes. Here, we report using experiments in conjunction with DFT simulations to clarify the role of ionic liquids (ILs) in altering the Al solvation dynamics, which in turn affects the aluminum electrochemistry and aqueous-based battery performance significantly. DFT calculations showed that the addition of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate (EMIMTfO) changes the aluminum solvation structure in the aqueous (Al(TfO)3) electrolyte to lower coordinated solvation shells, thereby influencing and improving Al deposition/stripping on the Zn/Al alloy anode. Furthermore, the addition of an IL reduces the strain in manganese oxide during intercalation/deintercalation, thereby improving the Zn/Al-MnOx battery performance. By optimizing the electrolyte composition, a battery potential of >1.7 V was achieved for the Zn/Al-MnOx system.

Abstract:Metallic Al has been deemed an ideal electrode material for aqueous batteries by virtue of its abundance and high theoretical capacity (8056 mAh cm-3). However, the development of aqueous Al metal batteries has been hindered by several side reactions, including water decomposition, Al corrosion, and passivation, which arise from the solvation reaction of Al and H2O in conventional aqueous electrolytes. In this work, we report that water activity in electrolyte can be suppressed by optimizing the Al3+ solvation structure through intercalation of polar pyridine-3-carboxylic acid in an aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate aqueous environment. Furthermore, the pyridine-3-carboxylic acid molecules are inclined to alter the surface energy of Al, thus suppressing the random deposition of Al. As a result, the Al corrosion in the hybrid electrolyte is restrained, and the long-term electrochemical stability of the electrolyte is tremendously improved. These merits bring remarkable reversibility to aqueous Al batteries using Al-preintercalated MnO2 cathodes, delivering a retaining energy density of >250 Wh kg-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 600 cycles.

Abstract:Al-air batteries have promising prospects due to their high theoretical specific capacity and energy density. However, the severe parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the Al surface in aqueous electrolytes is still the main challenge. Herein, we developed a green, low-cost, and multi-functional ZnO/glucose hybrid additive (ZGHA) to continuously inhibit the parasitic HER and stabilize the Al-metal anode. The inhibition mechanism was revealed via various characterizations and theoretical calculations. The glucose could simultaneously decrease water activity and form an adsorption layer. Besides, the addition of inorganic ZnO helps to form a Zn-containing layer. Impressively, ZnO and glucose show a synergy. The glucose molecule can adsorb on the Zn-containing layer to achieve a more uniform and firmer Zn-containing protective layer on the Al surface. A sig-nificant suppression on the parasitic HER and self-corrosion on the Al-metal anode is thereby achieved. The specific capacity and energy density of the Al-air battery are remarkably promoted to 2271.1 mAh gAl- 1 and 2446.9 Wh kgAl- 1. This work is instructive for developing better electrolyte additives for long-life and green Al-air batteries and could provide a reference for the exploration of anode/electrolyte interface.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum current collectors are widely used in nonaqueous batteries owing to their cost-effectiveness, lightweightness, and ease of fabrication. However, they are excluded from aqueous batteries due to their severe corrosion in aqueous solutions. Here, we propose hydrolyzation-type anodic additives to form a robust passivation layer to suppress corrosion. These additives dramatically lower the corrosion current density of aluminum by nearly three orders of magnitude to ~10 −6 A cm −2 . In addition, realizing that electrochemical corrosion accompanies anode prelithiation, we propose a prototype of self-prolonging aqueous Li-ion batteries (Al ||LiMn 2 O 4 ||TiO 2 ), whose capacity retention rises from 49.5% to 70.1% after 200 cycles. A sacrificial aluminum electrode where electrochemical corrosion is utilized is introduced as an electron supplement to prolong the cycling life of aqueous batteries. Our work addresses the short-life issue of aqueous batteries resulting from the corrosion of the current collector and lithium loss from side reactions.

Strengthen Water O‐H Bond in Electrolytes for Enhanced Reversibility and Safety in Aqueous Aluminum Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous aluminum-ion batteries present a promising prospect for large-scale energy storage applications, owing to the abundance, inherent safety, and the high theoretical capacity of aluminum. However, their voltage output and energy density are significantly hindered by challenges such as complex hydrogen evolution and uncontrollable solvation reactions. In this work, we demonstrate that water decomposition is restrain by increasing the electron density of water protons and increasing the dissociation energy of H2O through robust dipole interactions with highly polar dimethylformamide (DMF) molecules. Moreover, the incorporation of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) flame retardant effectively addresses the flammability risk arising from a substantial presence of organic additives The in-depth study with experimental and theoretical simulations reveals that the water-poor solvation structure with reduced water activity is achieved, which can (i) effectively mitigate undesired solvated H2O-mediated side reactions on the Al anode; (ii) boost the de-solvation kinetics of Al3+ while preventing cathode structural distortion; (iii) reduce the flammability of hybrid electrolytes. As a proof of concept, the Al//AlxMnO2 full cell employing a hybrid electrolyte demonstrate enhanced stability (deliver 335 mAh g-1 while retaining 71% capacity for 400 cycles) compared to those with pure electrolyte.

Abstract:Although Li-based batteries have established a dominant role in the current energy-storage landscape, post-Li chemistries (for example, Al or Zn) are emerging as promising candidates for next-generation rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical cells using Al or Zn metal as the negative electrode are of interest for their potential low cost, intrinsic safety and sustainability. Presently, such cells are considered impractical because the reversibility of the metal anode is poor and the amount of charge stored is miniscule. Here we report that electrodes designed to promote strong oxygen-mediated chemical bonding between Al deposits and the substrate enable a fine control of deposition morphology and provide exceptional reversibility (99.6–99.8%). The reversibility is sustained over unusually long cycling times (>3,600 hours) and at areal capacities up to two orders of magnitude higher than previously reported values. We show that these traits result from the elimination of fragile electron transport pathways, and the non-planar deposition of Al via specific metal–substrate chemical bonding.

Abstract:We addressed the poor interfacial stability of the Li metal anode in Li-S batteries through molecular regulation of electrolytes using arylthiol additives with various numbers of anchoring sites. The dual functional tetrathiol additive markedly enhanced the Li anode interfacial stability, controlled the sulfur redox kinetics and suppressed side reactions towards polysulfides, thus leading to an improved capacity retention of 70% after 500 cycles at 1 C.

Abstract:The corrosion of aluminum current collectors and the oxidation of solvents at a relatively high potential have been widely investigated with an aim to stabilize the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries using such components. The corrosion behavior of aluminum current collectors was revisited using a home-build high-precision electrochemical measurement system, and the impact of electrolyte components and the surface protection layer on aluminum foil was systematically studied. The electrochemical results showed that the corrosion of aluminum foil was triggered by the electrochemical oxidation of solvent molecules, like ethylene carbonate, at a relative high potential. The organic radical cations generated from the electrochemical oxidation are energetically unstable and readily undergo a deprotonation reaction that generates protons and promotes the dissolution of Al3+ from the aluminum foil. This new reaction mechanism can also shed light on the dissolution of transitional metal at high potentials.

Abstract:Safe lithium (Li) metal batteries have been plagued by dendrite growth due to a heterogeneous solid electrolyte interphases (SEI) on the Li metal anode. Modulating the solvation sheath of Li ions enhances the uniformity and stability of SEI significantly. However, anion regulation in the solvation sheath for constructing stable SEI is rarely touched. Herein, the solvation structure of original bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI-) anions in the solvation sheath is altered by introduction of other anions, promoting the complete decomposition of FSI- and forming a stable SEI on the Li metal anode. Moreover, both the oxidation stability window of the electrolyte and current collector protection were enhanced. Furthermore, the components and structure of the solvation sheath were disclosed by combining O-17 nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular dynamics simulations. This work provides fresh insight into the interrelation among various anions on regulating the solvation sheath of Li ions and demonstrates guidance in rationally designing electrolytes for stable and safe Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Aluminum metal has been regarded as a promising anode material for aqueous metal‐air batteries. However, the stable cycling of Al anodes is challenging due to the severe parasitic corrosion of Al metal in alkaline electrolytes. Here, a novel additive, n‐octylphosphonic acid (OPA), is introduced into the typical NaOH electrolyte system to improve the interfacial stability of Al anodes and thus promote high‐performance Al‐air batteries (AABs). Combining several experimental characterizations and theoretical calculation, it is proved that OPA molecules in an NaOH aqueous environment can modify the Al anode/electrolyte interface and alter the stacking of the discharge product. The electrolyte engineering is capable of anchoring dynamically to restrain side reactions through hydrogen bonds (H···O), homogenizing the dissolution of Al metal and avoiding precipitation agglomeration. As a proof of concept, AABs full cells with an electrolyte containing OPA achieve higher potential plateau and discharge capacity than those with a pure NaOH electrolyte. It paves a way to develop highly‐efficient and eco‐friendly electrolyte additive strategies for high‐performance AABs devices and advance the current understanding of organic additive mechanisms in AABs. n‐octylphosphonic acid (OPA) is proposed as an ideal inhibitor to suppress the self‐corrosion of Al anodes in Al‐air batteries (AABs). AAB full cells with an OPA‐based electrolyte deliver an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 2694 mAh g−1, 91% of their theoretical value (2980 mAh g−1). A practically useful OPA‐based AAB pile is further constructed to power a commercial digital camera steadily.

Abstract:Aluminum-air battery (AAB), as a kind of chemical power supply, exhibited great application potential owing to its high energy density, low cost and high safety. However, its further development was restricted by severe hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To address this issue, hybrid additives including of ZnO and quaternary ammonium salts (QAS, denoted as C1, C4, C8, C12 and C16, respectively, depending on the length of single alkyl group) were introduced into the electrolyte in this work. The results showed that the capacity density was improved with the increasing length of single alkyl group as well as its discharge voltage. The addition of QAS regulated the electrochemical environment on Al anode surface, where "physical-hydrophobic electrochemical interface" was created by the non-polar group due to its electrophilicity. Simultaneously, polar group could form strong H-bonds with H 2 O molecules and reduce the activity of free water, thus constructing "chemical-hydrophobic electrochemical interface". Meanwhile, QAS also promoted the uniform growth of Zn-based film, improving its structural integrity, as a barrier against H 2 O. As a result, HER was effectively inhibited to improve the capacity density up to 2470 mAh/g Al , corresponding to anodic utilization efficiency of 82.9 %. This work not only revealed the effect of electrophilicity on electrochemical environment around Al anode as well as the inhibition of HER, but also provide a guidance for the selection rule of organic additives to inhibit side reaction in aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Highlights The effect of electrostatic interaction on regulating an anion-rich solvation in electrolyte is firstly proposed. The moderate electrostatic interaction between anion and solvent promotes anion-rich solvation sheath, inducing a stable electrolyte|electrode interface with fast Li + transport kinetics. The outstanding electrochemical performance of 50 μm-thin Li||high-loading LiCoO 2 batteries is achieved at high voltage of 4.5 V (even up to 4.6 V), lean electrolyte of 15 μL, and wide temperature range of − 20 to 60 °C.
