Abstract:Tess of the D’Urbevilles is a tragic monumental work of Thomas Hardy, an English writer of critical realism.The paper will analyze Tess of the d’Urbervilles through character’s personalities, its social background and the old traditional religion. The paper introduces the causes of Tess’s Tragic fate which is influenced by personalities of main characters, hypocritical moral, unjust law, depression of capitalism. Tess is just one of the victims who are suffering sorrows. Through Tess, we can see female’s low status at the same time, which shows that we should develop a habit of economic independence and spirit of revolt.

The novel describes the bumpy life of Tess, a young woman born into a poor peddler’s family, mirroring the impact of the industrial rise on rural life in the 19th century. This paper, taking the female predicament in the Victorian era - limited education, passive marriage, and constrained employment, as its starting point and focusing on Tess’s image as a kind, independent, and rebellious character, delves into the multifaceted factors that contributed to her tragic fate, including impoverished familial background, hypocritical social morality, and spiritual oppression from religion. These factors intertwined, forming an invisible force that gradually pushed Tess into the abyss. Despite her resilient defiance, Tess ultimately succumbed to the dictates of fate, becoming a casualty of the progression of the times.

And the author Thomas Hardy describes the impacts of the industrial civilization on a village panoramically, then Tess as an individual miniature, further shows the people struggle in the plight of the struggle in the material. Tess is difficult to be recognized by the society, which makes her realize the hypocrisy of bourgeois society and the distortion of ethics. Abstract:With the development of feminism, women's discourse has gradually risen, while women's emancipation in China has been even more difficult in terms of ideology due to the ravages of thousands of years of feudal concepts. With the help of Freud's psychoanalytic theory, this paper puts the characters in the background of the White Deer Plain and analyses their typical female images. From the perspective of personality structure theory, Tian Xiao'e is regarded as the representative of the "id", Bai Zhao's and Lu Leng's are regarded as the representatives of the "ego", and Bai Ling is regarded as the representative of the "superego". It also incorporates feminist theories to realistically and intrinsically analyse the tragic fate of women in the White Deer Plain. This paper exposes the "cannibalistic" nature of the male-dominated feudal society to enrich the reader's knowledge of the female characters in White Deer Plain and to understand the value of women's awakening.

Abstract:Shen Congwen's short story Xiao Xiao describes the growth of a naive, kind-hearted girl from western Hunan. Xiao Xiao experiences her childhood when she lacks family love and care, her youth when her female consciousness awakens and she yearns for freedom after marrying a child bride, and her life when she is numb and submissive after her escape is discovered. It reveals the tragic fate of the heroine, Xiao Xiao, and shows the tragic fate of generations of "Xiao Xiao" who are confined to their families.

Abstract:Tess of the d'Urbervillesis Thomas Hardy's novel that tackles the story of Tess Durbeyfield, a working-woman in the farm of d'Urbervilles. She works so as to help her family in getting living. Jack Durbeyfield, Tess's father has no job. He spends his days in drinking wine. Tess looks like her mother, Joan Durbeyfield, in that both of them are uneducated and beautiful women. Alec d'Urbervilles forced Tess to be raped by him. She cannot oppose him because he is her master in work on one hand, and she is ignorant in the sexual relation-shipsbetween man and woman and the outcomes connecting from such arelationship. Hardy condemns the passivity of Tees. Being a passive person means to loose; means to be aimless, dependent, and having conforming to the fate without any resistance. Tess is passive in not attacking, defending herself from Alec's seduction at the beginning. She is passive in accepting Angel Clare's decision to leave her―at the night of confession―at the end. She had better counteract the outsider attacks. She is partly responsible for her tragic flaw and the other responsibility lies upon her mother, Joan. Her mother did not advice, and did not tell her how to guard herself. By tragic flaw, it is the destructive factor generated from the defects in the character that lead to destroy the charactertotally.

Abstract:As we all know, in "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio", Pu Songling gave a large description about love story. During a long period of time, many researchers and critics analyzed the female images and their view of marriage. There are three crucial stages of researches with many critics speaking highly of the view of marriage from the females in "Strange Stories From a Chinese Studio", especially when it comes to females' bold courtship and free marriage. The third stage of research, that is, since the nineties, however, the questions of the female images in the book started rising among the researchers. And not only that, even Pu Songling's psychology has been taken into consideration. Based on this point of view, I hope to re-analyze the female images in "Strange Stories From a Chinese Studio" with different angels, also with consideration of author's psychology. By starting with the well-known chapters, this paper won't lay one-sided emphasis on "free", "progressive" to analyze the females, but with the expectation that readers can truly realize how hard and miserable the females are at that time.

Abstract:This paper examines Chinese women’s love and marriage during a political and cultural revolution, and the impact on women’s livelihood. This paper discusses how changing in political ideology and culture is affecting love and marriage for a female figure. The paper takes the respect, responsibility, care knowledge (RRCK) model of love to exam the female’s one-sided love from a lens of Fromm’s theory of the four elements of true love to shed the light on the dysfunctional relationships among in China that results in gender violence and as demonstrated in the novel The Epic of a Woman. This paper sets forth options for love and marriage in the mid-20th century Chinese literary and to re-examine gender violence against women. The Epic of a Woman (Yige nüren de shishi), by Chinese American woman writer Yan Geling (b. 1958), narrates the experiences of female protagonist Tian Sufei and her relentless pursuit of love throughout her life. The female protagonist in this novel is a reflection of Yan Geling’s mother's personal experiences. Yan’s mother was a popular dancer in an art troupe in the revolutionary army when she was young. The novel is set in the period from the 1940s to the 1970s, with her husband being sent to a labor camp during the Cultural Revolution.

The author uses Tomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Lu Xun's The New-Year Sacrifice to analyze and compare the legal system in British Victorian and Chinese semi-feudal and semi-colonial society, and explores the root causes of the tragic fate of Tess and Xianglin’s Wife. Meanwhile, the paper reveals the predicament of women in the East and West around the 20th century.

Abstract:Patriarchy system occurs in the era of Victoria and many woman experience the effects of this system. The aims of the study is to find out the effect of patriarchy system endured by many woman character in the novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data used by the researcher in this research were taken from Anne Bronte’s novel entitled The Tenant of Wildfell Hall which was published by Anne Bronte in 1848. Data were collected by reading intensively the novel and conducting library research to find some useful resources which relate to analyzed topic namely relate to the patriarchy system. The result of study showed that the patriarchy system found in the novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) touches some basic institution in the society namely economic institution, education, religion, family, state institution and cultural values. Helen Graham, main female character in the novel experienced psychological effect because she has a sorrowful life since her marriage with Arthur Huntingdon and also in the novel, the effect of patriarchy system is also experienced by Milicent Hargrave, Ralphs Hattersley’s wife. Moreover, the effect of patriarchy system makes Helen take some actions and struggle against it as the reaction of the effect of the system to end her sad life, by running away from his husband’s house which it is taboo to be done by a woman in Victorian era. On the contrary, Milicent Hargrave decides to be an obedient wife and endures all the sufferings but at the end of the novel, her husband, Ralph Hattersley changes his attitude and becomes a loving husband and father.

The Origins of Female Figures in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio

Abstract:There are something in common between PU Song ling's wife and the female figures of his novel: they are all good at housekeeping, with inner directed, capable of sacrifice , with stronger ability to exist than males. Directly coming from Pu's ideal and his concern for and understanding of females , these female figures transcend to some degree the limits of family ethic, and highlight the feminine identity of females but not their identity of wife or motherhood. PU Song ling distributed in his full strength all the virtues ,such as beauty, youth, freedom ,and even his humor and poetics to females, but only admiration left to males.

Abstract:The novels “Exiled Immortal” and “A Touch of Green” are included in Bai Xianyong’s novels The New Yorker and Taipei People, respectively. In Bai Xianyong’s works, the concern for women is a constant topic, and he transforms himself into a combination of rationality and sensibility, sculpts the contours of the times and society, and captures the image of women in the plot through the language and behavioral details between reality and fiction. The tragic dimension magnifies the existence of women, the ups and downs of fate, the sadness of a foreign land, or the loss of self as a way to think about the dilemma of women’s existence. This paper focuses on female tragedy from a three-dimensional perspective: the causes, the deep narrative techniques, and the tragic endings. The study seeks to deepen the understanding of the delicate sense of female tragedy in the writing of Bai Xianyong.

Abstract:Tess Gunty is one of the most recognized contemporary novelists in America. Her debut novel, The Rabbit Hutch, is a mesmerizing work reflecting the individual struggles to survive and connect in a decadent modern society where everyone seems to be isolated from the outside world, whether physically or spiritually. Ecofeminism emphasizes that women and nature are closely connected as they are considered to be in an inferior status and, therefore, oppressed and dominated by men in the patriarchal society. This study intends to focus on what kind of interconnectedness of women and nature is presented in the novel and further provide an analysis of their twin domination and oppression by the male agencies of The Rabbit Hutch within the Ecofeminist theoretical framework. The novel offers ecofeminist narratives that illustrate the objectification and commodification of women and nature and exhibit the dangers of men’s master mentality and masculinized exploitation towards women and nature. The study concludes that oppressed by patriarchal agencies, women and nature formed a mutually supporting relationship. Under value dualism and hierarchical oppositions, women and nature are instrumentalized or commodified by the dualistic ideologies adopted by patriarchal agencies.

Abstract:Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio is one of the brilliant classical Chinese short stories in which females are described from the male perspective. The work presents diverse images of females who are not male private property or accessories any longer. As daughters, wives and mothers, they express the strong sense of feminism in a patriarchal society. The paper explores the images of five typical females from daughterhood, wifehood and motherhood based on Pu Songling’s description. These independent and avant-garde female images are the projection of Pu’s subconscious, which illustrates his advanced thought and reveals the social value of female.
