Abstract:Tess of the D’Urbervilles, a novel written by the renowned British author Thomas Hardy, stands as a gem of the 19th-century English literature. The novel describes the bumpy life of Tess, a young woman born into a poor peddler’s family, mirroring the impact of the industrial rise on rural life in the 19th century. This paper, taking the female predicament in the Victorian era - limited education, passive marriage, and constrained employment, as its starting point and focusing on Tess’s image as a kind, independent, and rebellious character, delves into the multifaceted factors that contributed to her tragic fate, including impoverished familial background, hypocritical social morality, and spiritual oppression from religion. These factors intertwined, forming an invisible force that gradually pushed Tess into the abyss. Despite her resilient defiance, Tess ultimately succumbed to the dictates of fate, becoming a casualty of the progression of the times.

The paper introduces the causes of Tess’s Tragic fate which is influenced by personalities of main characters, hypocritical moral, unjust law, depression of capitalism. Tess is just one of the victims who are suffering sorrows. Through Tess, we can see female’s low status at the same time, which shows that we should develop a habit of economic independence and spirit of revolt.

Abstract:Tess of the d'Urbervillesis Thomas Hardy's novel that tackles the story of Tess Durbeyfield, a working-woman in the farm of d'Urbervilles. She works so as to help her family in getting living. Jack Durbeyfield, Tess's father has no job. He spends his days in drinking wine. Tess looks like her mother, Joan Durbeyfield, in that both of them are uneducated and beautiful women. Alec d'Urbervilles forced Tess to be raped by him. She cannot oppose him because he is her master in work on one hand, and she is ignorant in the sexual relation-shipsbetween man and woman and the outcomes connecting from such arelationship. Hardy condemns the passivity of Tees. Being a passive person means to loose; means to be aimless, dependent, and having conforming to the fate without any resistance. Tess is passive in not attacking, defending herself from Alec's seduction at the beginning. She is passive in accepting Angel Clare's decision to leave her―at the night of confession―at the end. She had better counteract the outsider attacks. She is partly responsible for her tragic flaw and the other responsibility lies upon her mother, Joan. Her mother did not advice, and did not tell her how to guard herself. By tragic flaw, it is the destructive factor generated from the defects in the character that lead to destroy the charactertotally.

Abstract:Thomas Hardy’s novels are known for the portrayal of their protagonists’ ill fortune and tragedies. Attempts have been made to understand the pessimism that pervades his novels through the study of the harsh life of the rural proletariat, the class into which many of his protagonists fall, or of Victorian society itself which, with its forms of social constraint, limited people’s life and was a cause of unhappiness. This paper offers an alternative way of understanding the pessimism in Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891) through a scientific reading of the protagonist’s tragic life. By contextualizing this novel in the Victorian period when advances in science challenged religious belief and by considering the author’s interest in science and his ambivalent attitude towards religion, this paper aims to show that the calamitous life of the protagonist can be explained by the theory of natural selection in which living things are controlled by chance and randomness as opposed to religious belief which holds that God is behind human destiny. This reading also ties in with the theory and power of heredity which denies the individual any real choice, making the protagonist unable to control her own actions. The last approach will look at mesmerism which can shed light on the most important and controversial scene in the novel and which greatly contributes to the protagonist’s tragedy.

Abstract:The life tragedy of Emma in the world literature classic Madame Bovary has always been the focus of common readers and critics. The existing research mainly explores the root of her life tragedy from the perspectives of her view of love, social environment, patriarchal ideology, and the defects of her lovers' personality. This paper considers that Emma's own virtual deficiency plays a crucial role in her tragedy. Emma's lack of moral consciousness makes her deviate from family responsibilities, which in turn makes her life more weightless, empty, and boring. The apathy in Emma's moral emotion makes her lose the basic sense of shame, and unable to make correct judgment on her own and other people's behaviors, thus becoming degenerating in carnal indulgence. The weakness in Emma's moral will makes her unable to control her consuming desire, which makes her go to her final ruin in the extravagance of material consumption.

Abstract:Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles exhibits the life of Tess, a representative of the Victorian woman, who discovers herself in the midst of nature. She concurs with nature both physically and psychologically. Almost all the momentous incidents of her life have a close association with nature. The natural atmosphere, the landscape, the cycle of seasons, and the nocturnal animals introduced in the novel echo the inner rhythms of Tess. She, in fact, acts and reacts in a way that one can metaphorically relate her to nature. Her association with nature raises the question of whether she is a distinguished human being or a part of nature or just another self of nature. This paper, therefore, aims at addressing the metaphorical identity of Tess and reconsidering the relationship between nature and Tess in the light of ecocriticism.

Abstract:Marxist-Feminism highlights the unjustifiable inequality faced by the working class citizen. The effect is especially evidently shown on women who have been subjugated and oppressed in so many ways by men. This study addresses the issues of subjugation and subordination faced by Tess, the Victorian woman, in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles . The impact of cultural hegemony is carefully structured and presented by Marxist-Feminism. Such constructed ideology is brilliantly created to show the misleading superiority of men over women. The huge influence of Capitalism in the 19th Century is shown through the treatment women received in both public and private spheres. The active enrolments of women as Productive and Reproductive labours go unrecognised. Textual evidences are extracted to facilitate, support, and solidify the purpose of study.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper was to highlight the miserable plight of women during the Victorian era, the age of social reforms, political improvements, collective welfare, and material prosperity. During this age, Queen Victoria worked on various issues that had remained the cause of unrest among the people. Her efforts, in this regard, were indeed commendable, but she took no interest to resolve issues of women who had been suffering terribly under patriarchy. The subject of women remained ignored for many years, then some writers started to highlight the miserable state of these passive creatures who were the constant victims of social, political and economic injustices, inequalities, deprivations, and domestic violence. Of all the feminists, Thomas Hardy stood unique as he brought to light almost all areas of life where women were suffering awfully and their voices were suppressed under the male-dominated system. Hardy took serious note of the long-ignored subject of society and provided a vivid and realistic picture of Victorian society through his extraordinarily brilliant novels. Thomas Hardy’s famous masterpiece ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles: A Pure Woman” is one of the best novels depicting women-related issues that shook the minds of the people to proceed towards this delicate matter. The contents or events described in the novel confirmed that women were the disadvantaged section of society who were deprived of their due rights and respect in society. They were objectified and preferred to a man in each sphere of life.

Abstract:Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d’Urbervilles illuminates profound connections between individuals, society, and the natural world. This study examines Hardy's narrative through an ecofeminism lens, investigating the role of nature in shaping women's self-awareness, particularly exemplified by the protagonist Tess. Utilizing qualitative descriptive methodology, the research delves into Tess's experiences, elucidating the intricate interplay between her consciousness, societal constraints, and environmental dynamics. The research reveals nature as a multifaceted backdrop for Tess's journey of self-discovery. Initially, her poignant encounter with the death of her horse, Prince, triggers a profound introspection, catalyzing her awareness of life's fragility and her own agency within the natural order. However, subsequent traumas, such as her violation in the forest, tarnish her perception of nature as a sanctuary, rendering it a poignant symbol of her suffering. Nevertheless, nature also offers Tess moments of solace and renewal. Her immersion in farm life provides a conduit for reconnecting with the rhythms of the earth, fostering resilience and empowerment amidst adversity. Moreover, nature becomes a refuge from societal judgment, albeit simultaneously serving as a poignant reminder of her past. Through Tess's odyssey, Hardy underscores the intimate bond between women and nature, shedding light on their vulnerability within patriarchal structures. This research contributes to the discourse on ecofeminism in literature by elucidating how nature shapes women's self-awareness and agency, advocating for a nuanced understanding of their complex relationship. Ultimately, it underscores the need for more equitable and empowering connections between women and the natural world.

Abstract:As we all know, in "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio", Pu Songling gave a large description about love story. During a long period of time, many researchers and critics analyzed the female images and their view of marriage. There are three crucial stages of researches with many critics speaking highly of the view of marriage from the females in "Strange Stories From a Chinese Studio", especially when it comes to females' bold courtship and free marriage. The third stage of research, that is, since the nineties, however, the questions of the female images in the book started rising among the researchers. And not only that, even Pu Songling's psychology has been taken into consideration. Based on this point of view, I hope to re-analyze the female images in "Strange Stories From a Chinese Studio" with different angels, also with consideration of author's psychology. By starting with the well-known chapters, this paper won't lay one-sided emphasis on "free", "progressive" to analyze the females, but with the expectation that readers can truly realize how hard and miserable the females are at that time.
