Abstract:This paper proves explicit formulas for the number of dissections of a convex regular polygon modulo the action of the cyclic and dihedral groups. The formulas are obtained by making use of the Cauchy-Frobenius Lemma as well as bijections between rotationally symmetric dissections and simpler classes of dissections. A number of special cases of these formulas are studied. Consequently, some known enumerations are recovered and several new ones are provided.

Abstract:The famous CHSH game can be interpreted with Boolean functions while understanding the success probability in the classical scenario. In this paper, we have exhaustively studied all the Boolean functions on four variables to express binary input binary output two-party nonlocal games and explore their performance in both classical and quantum scenarios. Our analysis finds out some other games (other than the CHSH game) which offer a higher success probability in the quantum scenario as compared to the classical one. Naturally, our study also notes that the CHSH game (and the games corresponding to the similar partition) is the most efficient in terms of separation between quantum and classical techniques.

Count-Free Weisfeiler--Leman and Group Isomorphism

Abstract:We investigate the power of counting in Group Isomorphism. We first leverage the count-free variant of the Weisfeiler--Leman Version I algorithm for groups (Brachter & Schweitzer, LICS 2020) in tandem with limited non-determinism and limited counting to improve the parallel complexity of isomorphism testing for several families of groups. These families include: - Direct products of non-Abelian simple groups. - Coprime extensions, where the normal Hall subgroup is Abelian and the complement is an $O(1)$-generated solvable group with solvability class $\text{poly} \log \log n$. This notably includes instances where the complement is an $O(1)$-generated nilpotent group. This problem was previously known to be in $\textsf{P}$ (Qiao, Sarma, & Tang, STACS 2011), and the complexity was recently improved to $\textsf{L}$ (Grochow & Levet, FCT 2023). - Graphical groups of class $2$ and exponent $p > 2$ (Mekler, J. Symb. Log., 1981) arising from the CFI and twisted CFI graphs (Cai, Fürer, & Immerman, Combinatorica 1992) respectively. In particular, our work improves upon previous results of Brachter & Schweitzer (LICS 2020). We finally show that the $q$-ary count-free pebble game is unable to distinguish even Abelian groups. This extends the result of Grochow & Levet (ibid), who established the result in the case of $q = 1$. The general theme is that some counting appears necessary to place Group Isomorphism into $\textsf{P}$.

Abstract:We study the moduli spaces of polygons in R^2 and R^3, identifying them with subquotients of 2-Grassmannians using a symplectic version of the Gel'fand-MacPherson correspondence. We show that the bending flows defined by Kapovich-Millson arise as a reduction of the Gel'fand-Cetlin system on the Grassmannian, and with these determine the pentagon and hexagon spaces up to equivariant symplectomorphism. Other than invocation of Delzant's theorem, our proofs are purely polygon-theoretic in nature.
Geometry of Set Functions in Game Theory: Combinatorial and Computational Aspects

Abstract:The main ambition of this thesis is to contribute to the development of cooperative game theory towards combinatorics, algorithmics and discrete geometry. Therefore, the first chapter of this manuscript is devoted to highlighting the geometric nature of the coalition functions of transferable utility games and spotlights the existing connections with the theory of submodular set functions and polyhedral geometry. To deepen the links with polyhedral geometry, we define a new family of polyhedra, called the basic polyhedra, on which we can apply a generalized version of the Bondareva-Shapley Theorem to check their nonemptiness. To allow a practical use of these computational tools, we present an algorithmic procedure generating the minimal balanced collections, based on Peleg's method. Subsequently, we apply the generalization of the Bondareva-Shapley Theorem to design a collection of algorithmic procedures able to check properties or generate specific sets of coalitions. In the next chapter, the connections with combinatorics are investigated. First, we prove that the balanced collections form a combinatorial species, and we construct the one of k-uniform hypergraphs of size p, as an intermediary step to construct the species of balanced collections. Afterwards, a few results concerning resonance arrangements distorted by games are introduced, which gives new information about the space of preimputations and the facial configuration of the core. Finally, we address the question of core stability using the results from the previous chapters. Firstly, we present an algorithm based on Grabisch and Sudhölter's nested balancedness characterization of games with a stable core, which extensively uses the generalization of the Bondareva-Shapley Theorem introduced in the second chapter. Boolean Function Analysis on High-Dimensional Expanders

Abstract:We initiate the study of Boolean function analysis on high-dimensional expanders. We give a random-walk based definition of high-dimensional expansion, which coincides with the earlier definition in terms of two-sided link expanders. Using this definition, we describe an analog of the Fourier expansion and the Fourier levels of the Boolean hypercube for simplicial complexes. Our analog is a decomposition into approximate eigenspaces of random walks associated with the simplicial complexes. Our random-walk definition and the decomposition have the additional advantage that they extend to the more general setting of posets, encompassing both high-dimensional expanders and the Grassmann poset, which appears in recent work on the unique games conjecture. We then use this decomposition to extend the Friedgut–Kalai–Naor theorem to high-dimensional expanders. Our results demonstrate that a constant-degree high-dimensional expander can sometimes serve as a sparse model for the Boolean slice or hypercube, and quite possibly additional results from Boolean function analysis can be carried over to this sparse model. Therefore, this model can be viewed as a derandomization of the Boolean slice, containing only points in contrast to points in the ( k )-slice (which consists of all n -bit strings with exactly k ones).

Abstract:In this paper, we give part-preserving bijections between three fundamental families of objects that serve as natural framework for many problems in enumerative combinatorics. Specifically, we consider compositions, Dyck paths, and partitions of a convex polygon, and identify suitable building blocks that are then appropriately decorated to achieve matching cardinalities. Our bijections are constructive and apply for the general case where the building blocks are allowed to come in different colors.

Abstract:Inside a two dimensional region ("cake"), there are $m$ non-overlapping tiles of a certain kind ("toppings"). We want to expand the toppings while keeping them non-overlapping, and possibly add some blank pieces of the same "certain kind", such that the entire cake is covered. How many blanks must we add? We study this question in several cases: (1) The cake and toppings are general polygons. (2) The cake and toppings are convex figures. (3) The cake and toppings are axes-parallel rectangles. (4) The cake is an axes-parallel rectilinear polygon and the toppings are axes-parallel rectangles. In all four cases, we provide tight bounds on the number of blanks.

Abstract:The Catalan numbers $C_k$ were first studied by Euler, in the context of enumerating triangulations of polygons $P_{k+2}$. Among the many generalizations of this sequence, the Fuss-Catalan numbers $C^{(d)}_k$ count enumerations of dissections of polygons $P_{k(d-1)+2}$ into $(d+1)$-gons. In this paper, we provide a formula enumerating polygonal dissections of $(n+2)$-gons, classified by partitions $\lambda$ of $[n]$. We connect these counts $a_{\lambda}$ to reverse series arising from iterated polynomials. Generalizing this further, we show that the coefficients of the reverse series of polynomials $x=z-\sum_{j=0}^{\infty} b_j z^{j+1}$ enumerate colored polygonal dissections.

Computational complexity of counting coincidences

Abstract:Can you decide if there is a coincidence in the numbers counting two different combinatorial objects? For example, can you decide if two regions in $\mathbb{R}^3$ have the same number of domino tilings? There are two versions of the problem, with $2\times 1 \times 1$ and $2\times 2 \times 1$ boxes. We prove that in both cases the coincidence problem is not in the polynomial hierarchy unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to a finite level. While the conclusions are the same, the proofs are notably different and generalize in different directions. We proceed to explore the coincidence problem for counting independent sets and matchings in graphs, matroid bases, order ideals and linear extensions in posets, permutation patterns, and the Kronecker coefficients. We also make a number of conjectures for counting other combinatorial objects such as plane triangulations, contingency tables, standard Young tableaux, reduced factorizations and the Littlewood--Richardson coefficients.

A variational principle in the parametric geometry of numbers

Abstract:We extend the parametric geometry of numbers (initiated by Schmidt and Summerer, and deepened by Roy) to Diophantine approximation for systems of $m$ linear forms in $n$ variables, and establish a new connection to the metric theory via a variational principle that computes fractal dimensions of a variety of sets of number-theoretic interest. The proof relies on two novel ingredients: a variant of Schmidt's game capable of computing the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of any set, and the notion of templates, which generalize Roy's rigid systems. In particular, we compute the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular systems of linear forms and show they are equal, resolving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Margulis, as well as a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier. As a corollary of Dani's correspondence principle, the divergent trajectories of a one-parameter diagonal action on the space of unimodular lattices with exactly two Lyapunov exponents with opposite signs has equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions. Other applications include quantitative strengthenings of theorems due to Cheung and Moshchevitin, which originally resolved conjectures due to Starkov and Schmidt respectively; as well as dimension formulas with respect to the uniform exponent of irrationality for simultaneous and dual approximation in two dimensions, completing partial results due to Baker, Bugeaud, Cheung, Chevallier, Dodson, Laurent and Rynne.

Abstract:Border's theorem gives an intuitive linear characterization of the feasible interim allocation rules of a Bayesian single-item environment, and it has several applications in economic and algorithmic mechanism design. All known generalizations of Border's theorem either restrict attention to relatively simple settings, or resort to approximation. This paper identifies a complexity-theoretic barrier that indicates, assuming standard complexity class separations, that Border's theorem cannot be extended significantly beyond the state-of-the-art. We also identify a surprisingly tight connection between Myerson's optimal auction theory, when applied to public project settings, and some fundamental results in the analysis of Boolean functions.

Abstract:Shapley operators of undiscounted zero-sum two-player games are order-preserving maps that commute with the addition of a constant. We characterize the fixed point sets of Shapley operators, in finite dimension (i.e., for games with a finite state space). Some of these characterizations are of a lattice theoretical nature, whereas some other rely on metric or tropical geometry. More precisely, we show that fixed point sets of Shapley operators are special instances of hyperconvex spaces: they are sup-norm non-expansive retracts of $\R^n$, and also lattices in the induced partial order. Moreover, they retain properties of convex sets, with a notion of ``convex hull'' defined only up to isomorphism. This provides an effective construction of the injective hull or tight span, in the case of additive cones. For deterministic games with finite action spaces, these fixed point sets are supports of polyhedral complexes, with a cell decomposition attached to stationary strategies of the players, in which each cell is an alcoved polyhedron of $A_n$ type. We finally provide an explicit local representation of the latter fixed point sets, as polyhedral fans canonically associated to lattices included in the Boolean hypercube.

Classifying rational polygons with small denominator and few interior lattice points

Abstract:We present algorithms for classifying rational polygons with fixed denominator and number of interior lattice points. Our approach is to first describe maximal polygons and then compute all subpolygons, where we eliminate redundancy by a suitable normal form. Executing our classification, we obtained a dataset of several billions of polygons covering a wide variety of cases.

Abstract:We study combinatorial games under misère convention. Several sets of games have been considered earlier to better understand the behaviour of misère games. We here connect several of these sets. In particular, we prove that comparison modulo binary dicot games is often the same as comparison modulo dicot games, and that equivalence modulo dicot games and modulo impartial games are the same when they are restricted to impartial games.

Abstract:A new algorithm for Boolean operations on general planar polygons is presented. It is available for general planar polygons (manifold or non-manifold, with or without holes). Edges of the two general polygons are subdivided at the intersection points and touching points. Thus, the boundary of the Boolean operation resultant polygon is made of some whole edges of the polygons after the subdivision process. We use the simplex theory to build the basic mathematical model of the new algorithm. The subordination problem between an edge and a polygon is reduced to a problem of determining whether a point is on some edges of some simplices or inside the simplices, and the associated simplicial chain of the resultant polygon is just an assembly of some simplices and their coefficients of the two polygons after the subdivision process. Examples show that the running time required by the new algorithm is less than one-third of that by the Rivero and Feito algorithm.
Counting the Number of Integral Points in General n-Dimensional Tetrahedra and Bernoulli Polynomials

Abstract:Recently there has been tremendous interest in counting the number of integral points in n-dimensional tetrahedra with non-integral vertices due to its applications in primality testing and factoring in number theory and in singularities theory. The purpose of this note is to formulate a conjecture on sharp upper estimate of the number of integral points in n-dimensional tetrahedra with non-integral vertices. We show that this conjecture is true for low dimensional cases as well as in the case of homogeneous n-dimensional tetrahedra. We also show that the Bernoulli polynomials play a role in this counting.

Abstract:We modify the game Fuchino, Koppelberg, and Shelah used to characterize the κ -Freese-Nation property for a given Boolean algebra A , replacing players I and II each with a team of n players with limited information. We show that A is tightly κ -filtered exactly when team II has a winning strategy for every finite team size. Case κ=א0 characterizes projective Boolean algebras and, hence, Dugundji spaces. In terms of the open-open game of Daniels, Kunen, and Zhou, this characterization is a team version of "very I-favorable." We similarly characterize Cohen algebras in terms of a team version of I-favorability. If A is the clopen algebra of the space of n -uniform hypergraphs on κ+n that avoid copies of [n+1]n , then team II has a winning strategy for our modified FKS game for team size n−1 but not n . For n≥3 , this algebra also answers a question of Geschke when combined with a locally < κ -sized characterization of tightly κ -filtered Boolean algebras that we prove. Case κ=א0 includes a locally finite characterization of projective Boolean algebras.
