Abstract:In this paper, we find that after the long period of continuously increasing of regional income disparity, the pace of regional income disparity widen has been slowed down step by step after 2000. By examining the economic convergence and regional growth in the period of 1990—2004, we find that there is an evidence of conditional convergence, and there are some factors contributed to the development of regional economic growth. Then we decomposed the regional growth rate to find out the contribution of each factor to the development of regional income disparity.

Abstract:Using the data of 1% national population sampling survey in 2005,the paper conducted a quantitative analysis of monthly income of Chinese people.Some indicators such as monthly income distribution,the average monthly income and the Gini coefficient were introduced to study the status of Chinas income disparity,from the perspective of the whole country and different provinces.The study took into account the situation of national and provincial levels.The conclusions are: national Gini coefficient is 0.476,which means the income disparity is relatively large.Inter-regional income gap is large,maintaining a"high-east,low-west"pattern.The more economically developed the province is,the lower the Gini coefficient is,and the more equitable the distribution of income is.

Abstract:This paper surveys the literature on regional inequality in contemporary China. It reviews the trend of convergence or divergence of real GDP or income across different regions in China since 1952, and examines the degree of regional inequality using different measurements. It then discusses various factors that may cause the increasing regional inequality and the empirical evidences correspondingly. Finally it gives policy implications.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the trend of regional economic disparities of Zhejiang province.Using four indices to evaluate the differences between the 11 cities,including Geordie coefficient,weighted variation coefficient,Theil coefficient and location quotient.On the basis of these indices,the author gives the R/S analysis to them,the outcome of the analysis shows that it suffices the Hurst principal,and it has typical self-similarity in time series,meanwhile,the trend of regional economic disparities trends to increase in the future.Finally,the paper gives deep discussion on the reasons that cause the economy differences among the cities.

Abstract:Since the reforms and the implementation of the open door policy in 1978,industrialization and urbanization has greatly contributed to the rapid economic development in China.A continuously high rate of economic growth has resulted in vast increases in GDP and a sharp upward trend in per capita income over the period from 1978 to the present.Despite a nearly tenfold increase in per capita income across all provinces over the last three decades,regional disparities have evidently increased since the reforms.The collected data shows that the income disparities in China mainly demonstrate themselves as interregional disparities instead of intraregional disparities.The rapid urbanization in China has led to farmers losing land,resulting in new types of urban and rural poverty.Around many big cities in China,people can see the metropolitan city life coexisting with poor county life.However,Zhejiang province has been maintaining a good balanced development within its region by relying on the booming private sector and the integral/concrete urbanization,and the regional disparities and rural-urban inequality have been successfully controlled and effectively eliminated.Welfare and economic development have been traditional alternatives for the elimination of the regional disparities.Specifically,inter-regional and intra-regional integration is important for reducing regional disparities and pursuing income equality.As far as China is concerned,the central government should take more responsibilities to improve the social security rights for citizens,while the local governments should spend more efforts in stimulating the local development.The successful experiences in Zhejiang and Jiangsu have demonstrated that the development of the private sector is the best measure in tackling the issues of regional imbalanced development.In combination with a more perfect regional market system,urbanization and rural-urban integration,we will be able to gradually reduce and restrain regional disparities and income disparities.

Abstract:Regional income inequality in rural China shows different characteristics with the year 2000 as benchmark.Income disparity decreased from 1997 to 2000 but increased again since 2001.Factor decomposition analysis indicates that the distribution effect explains the declining inequality and the construction effect is the major cause of inequality increase.Subsample decomposition shows that the disparity of inter East-Middle-West and intra-East contributes the major proportion to the overall inequality.Fei-Rainis decomposition shows that wage,location,education,capital and per capita arable land explain 80% of the total inequality.

Abstract:By a MLD index decomposition analysis on the income distribution data from 1992 to 2007,it can be found that in China the income disparity tends to expand increasingly in general,and the regional group differences contribute greatly to the gap.The different levels of regional economic development is the core element that impacts the change of regional income distribution gap.The key solution to this issue is to decrease the differences in regional economic development level and to balance the opening-up level between regions.

Abstract:Over the past 30 years, the per capita income in China has increased by nearly ten-fold. Still, the one fact that cannot be disputed is that economic development disparity in China has been growing through the period of reform and opening up. The data show that the disparity among the eastern, central, and western zones in China is very prominent. And the relative convergence in the internal development in each zone exacerbates the disparity among the eastern, central, and western zones. Even in the eastern coastal area, the development disparities and income disparities in some places are very obvious; these disparities have been mitigated more or less sometimes in some places, but repeatedly started to rise in some other places. In particular, some areas have rapid urbanization of land, but without correspondingly following up of private non-agricultural industries agglomeration. As a result, the population concentration and population urbanization is lagging far behind the land urbanization. And this further widens the urban-rural disparity and income disparity, which results in the imbalance in regional economic development and prominent urban-rural imbalance in economic development. Welfare improvements and economic development are two methods that can always be used to resolve problems of regional disparity and income disparity. For China, the central government should take more social welfare obligations and the local governments should focus more on promoting economic development.

Abstract:This study analyzes the driving factors behind regional income inequality to provide an important reference for China and other developing countries and to support the formulation of more effective regional development policies. The study used data from 625 county-level administrative units in China in 2017 and conducted a total factor analysis of China's regional income based on 10 economic dimensions using spatially explicit regression methods. The results show that commerce, population footprint, industrialization, and investment are the main factors that affected a Chinese region's income, but different factors have different degrees of influence in different regions. The impact of economic institutions (developing an institutionally diverse market economy) on income cannot be ignored. Based on our findings, China should give local governments more autonomy, so they can formulate strategies that account for local constraints and opportunities, thereby increasing their chances of decreasing regional income inequality.

Abstract:China’s spectacular growth and poverty reduction has been accompanied by growing inequality which threatens the social compact and thus the political basis for economic growth and social development. The regional dimension of inequality— rural/urban, inland/coastal and provincial—dominates in a country as large as China, and especially with its particular history. The three of us have been researching Chinese regional inequality for over a decade. In a series of papers which have been published in peer reviewed journals, we have been involved in a systematic investigation into the nature and evolution of regional inequality in China. The object of this volume is to bring together a selection of these papers by us and our co-authors, so that researchers and policy makers can have access to them in one place. This introduction provides an overview of the volume.

Abstract:Starting from the theoretical debates concerning economic transition in socialist countries, the authors of this article attempt to conduct a theoretical study of China's economic transition, focusing on the impacts of two strategies: regional disparity reform and the state monopoly sector. They build up a regional income gap model, based on the (urban areas) data of the nationwide Gross Comprehensive Social Survey 2003 (GSS 2003), to estimate the different impacts of various variables, including the state monopoly sector, on individuals' income. In this way, they comprehensively depict the basic pattern and trends of income distribution among Chinese urban residents after twenty-odd years of social transformation.

Abstract:The issue of disparity in income per capita between rural and urban China is attractive.Based on the household surveys and the methods of decomposition of Theil index,G·Fields method,Blinder,and quantile regression,the article discusses the pure effect on national inequality.The results show the urban-rural disparity is expanding,and quantile regression implies the urban-rural disparity will have more negative effects on the lower income rural households.

Abstract:Regional economic disparities have received more and more attention,and become an important factor of social development.This article explicitly summarizes and analyses the tendency,causes and measures and policies for regional economic disparities in China,and believes that the study on regional economic disparities has been more and more deep-going,and that there is less quantitative analysis on causes,such as system and historical culture.The author suggests a resolution into factors and causes for regional economic disparities and analysis in the foundation of imperfect competition and increasing returns to scale.

Abstract:The paper applies the standard decomposition analysis of the General Entropy Measure to a new set of GDP and sectoral income data for Chinese prefectures with three points of observation over a decade (1993, 1998 and 2003). Prefectures are arranged into regional subgroupings on different levels of aggregation, i.e. the belt, the macroregion and the province. We investigate the relative roles of inter- and intra-regional factors of total inequality. Main results include: There is a strong impact on intra-provincial factors, so that larger aggregation schemes may mislead regional policies; the level of urban inequality continues to be much lower and more uniform than rural inequality, however, with increasing urban inequality in the coastal areas; there is a clear trend towards greater inter- and intra-regional inequality which is driven by rural-urban disparities.

Abstract:Domestic and foreign scholars have already done much research on regional disparity and its evolution in China, but there is a big difference in conclusions. What is the reason for this? We think it is mainly due to different analytic approaches, perspectives, spatial units, statistical indicators and different periods for studies. On the basis of previous analyses and findings, we have done some further quantitative computation and empirical study, and revealed the inter-provincial disparity and regional disparity of economic development and their evolution trends from 1952-2000. The results shows that (a) Regional disparity in economic development in China, including the inter-provincial disparity, inter-regional disparity and intra-regional disparity, has existed for years; (b) Gini coefficient and Theil coefficient have revealed a similar dynamic trend for comparative disparity in economic development between provinces in China. From 1952 to 1978, except for the "Great Leap Forward" period, comparative disparity basically assumes a upward trend and it assumed a slowly downward trend from 1979 to1990. Afterwards from 1991 to 2000 the disparity assumed a slowly upward trend again; (c) A comparison between Shanghai and Guizhou shows that absolute inter-provincial disparity has been quite big for years; and (d) The Hurst exponent (H=0.5) in the period of 1966-1978 indicates that the comparative inter-provincial disparity of economic development showed a random characteristic, and in the Hurst exponent (H>0.5) in period of 1979-2000 indicates that in this period the evolution of the comparative inter-provincial disparity of economic development in China has a long-enduring characteristic.

Abstract:Recently, Chinese income gap between regions is widening gradually, and low -income areas is cen- tralizing in the Midwest. There are various reasons explaining why income gap widens such as economical develop- ment strategies, geographical factors, unequally educational opportunities and so on. However, widening income gap between regions too largely will push the material and capital of the central and western areas of the country into eastern regions, and lead the midwest areas more backward. To the whole country, it will bring economical devel- opment unbalancedly, even is bad for country~ stability finally. Therefore, at present, it is urgent to narrow income gap between regions and develop the economy harmoniously.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to apply an inequality composition method,the two-stage nested Theil decomposition method,which is an extension of the ordinary one-stage Theil decomposition method,based on the different regional systems,to the study of regional inequalities in China.One of the innovation of this paper compared to those previously done studies on the same topic,is its multi-scale approach.This study adopts a bottom-up aggregation of spatial data,beginning with the administration unit of county,via those of prefecture and province,and ending by that of region,form county to prefecture to province to region.First of all,the regional inequalities is measured quantitatively in China from 1978 to 2001 by Theil indices based on province-level mean income.Then,considering the three-level hierarchical structure of a country,region-province-prefecture approach or via the region-province-county approach,the calculated Theil regional inequality index is further decomposed into the inter-regional and intra-regional sub-indices.The method uses a prefecture as the underlying regional unit to measure quantitatively overall regional income inequality,rather than a province which is chosen often by the most researchers in their study scope,and thus can analyze the contribution of within-province inequalities as well as between-province and between-region inequalities to the overall regional income inequalities in a coherent framework.Secondly,this paper applies the two-stage nested Theil decomposition method to prefecture-level or county-level income and population data in China in 2001,to explore the spatial structure of and characteristics of within-provinces inequalities based on the different regional systems.To farther analyze the results,the three inequality components and the within-province inequalities in 2001 are analyzed in depth separately.

Abstract:PurposeFast growth in China has led to significant improvement in people's living standards and average income. However, it has also brought about a huge rise in inequality. The purpose of this paper is to analyse regional and rural‐urban inequality using a few income and consumption indicators.Design/methodology/approachData are collected from official statistical sources for all the Chinese provinces over 1978‐1995. Both parametric and non‐parametric methods are used to study the inequality between regions and between the rural and urban sub‐populations. The parametric approach is to test whether per capita incomes among provinces converged over time. The non‐parametric approach is the calculation and decomposition of the Gini coefficient by population sub‐group and income source.FindingsThe results show no evidence of growth convergence in per capita GDP, income and expenditure across provinces, but clear evidence of divergence in per capita rural (and urban) incomes and total expenditures. Three‐quarters of inter‐provincial income inequality are explained by inter‐rural/urban inequality. Inter‐provincial inequality explains more than half of rural inequality and less than half of urban inequality in most years.Originality/valueThis paper uses one of the most complicated datasets for the Chinese regions. It studies inequality using different economic indicators. It considers the different dimensions of inequality in China using two different approaches. The results are important for regional development policies.

Abstract:Since 1978,the changing process of China’s regional income gap can be divided into N-shaped three periods;the trend of the changes of the regional income gap is generally consistent with the process of China’s economic development and institutional reforms.In the three periods of 1978-1983,1983-1988 and 2003-2008,the regional long-term income gaps have been alleviated;however,during 1988-2003,the problem of the long-term regional income gap becomes more serious.An analysis of the changes of regional income gaps during the periods from 1978 to 2008 indicates that the order of income ranking between the regions is relatively stable,the impact of the regional income gap is relatively small;while there is a big difference in the progressivity of income growth between the regions during the periods,which is the main factor leading to changes in regional income gap.
