Abstract:We present a theoretical and computational study of positron supercritical resonances in systems consisting of two highly-charged bare nuclei. The resonance positions and widths depending on the internuclear separation are calculated with the help of the complex-scaling generalized pseudospectral method in modified prolate spheroidal coordinates. The results are applied to estimate the probability of spontaneous positron creation in slow U$^{92+}$--U$^{92+}$ and Cm$^{96+}$--Cm$^{96+}$ collisions.

Abstract:We calculate the production of exotic electromagnetic bound systems, which ia an consisting of a ($l^{+}l^{-}$) bound state system such as positronium, dimuonium, and ditauonium, by photon-photon interaction with the equivalent photon approximation in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions considering the nuclear form factor. The numerical results demonstrate that the experimental study of positronium, dimuonium, and ditauonium in ultra-peripheral collisions is feasible at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies.

Abstract:We consider the production of ultrarelativistic positronium (Ps) in γA→Ps+A and eA→Ps+eA processes, where A is an atom or a nucleus with charge Ze. For the photoproduction of para-and ortho-Ps and the electroproduction of para-Ps we obtain the most complete description compared to previous works. It includes high-order Zα corrections and polarization effects. The accuracy of the obtained cross sections is determined by omitted terms of the order of the inverse Ps Lorentz factor. The high-order multi-photon electroproduction of ortho-Ps studied dominates for the collision of electrons with heavy atoms over the bremsstrahlung production from the electron via a virtual photon proposed by Holvik and Olsen [Phys. Rev. D 35, 2124 (1987)]. Our results complete and correct the studies of those authors.

Abstract:Positron creation probabilities as well as energy and angular distributions of outgoing positrons in slow collisions of two identical heavy nuclei are obtained within the two-center approach beyond the monopole approximation. The time-dependent Dirac equation for positron wave functions is solved with the help of the generalized pseudospectral method in modified prolate spheroidal coordinates adapted for variable internuclear separation. Depending on the nuclear charge, the results are obtained for both subcritical and supercritical regimes of the positron creation. The signatures of transition to the supercritical regime in the total positron creation probabilities and energy spectra are discussed. One-photon annihilation of the electron-positron pair at heavy atomic nuclei

Abstract:We investigate one-photon annihilation of the electron-positron pair in the field of a central, very heavy and positively charged atomic nucleus. The explicit formula for the annihilation rate of this process $\Gamma^{(b)}_{1 \gamma}$ is derived. Our formula for this rate can directly be used to describe the actual one-photon annihilation in the ground (bound) states of all positronium hydrides HPs, quasi-stable triplet states of the positron-helium atoms $e^{+}[$ He($2^{3}S_e$)] ions and other systems.

Abstract:Classical and semi-classical energy states of relativistic electrons bounded by a massive and charged core with the charge-mass-radio Q/M and macroscopic radius R_c are discussed. We show that the energies of semi-classical (bound) states can be much smaller than the negative electron mass-energy (-mc^2), and energy-level crossing to negative energy continuum occurs. Electron-positron pair production takes place by quantum tunneling, if these bound states are not occupied. Electrons fill into these bound states and positrons go to infinity. We explicitly calculate the rate of pair-production, and compare it with the rates of electron-positron production by the Sauter-Euler-Heisenberg-Schwinger in a constant electric field. In addition, the pair-production rate for the electro-gravitational balance ratio Q/M = 10^{-19} is much larger than the pair-production rate due to the Hawking processes.

Abstract:Ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions are expected to produce the strongest electromagnetic fields in the known Universe. These highly-Lorentz contracted fields can manifest themselves as linearly polarized quasi-real photons that can interact via the Breit-Wheeler process to produce lepton anti-lepton pairs. The energy and momentum distribution of the produced dileptons carry information about the strength and spatial distribution of the colliding fields. Recently it has been demonstrated that photons from these fields can interact even in heavy-ion collisions with hadronic overlap, providing a purely electromagnetic probe of the produced medium. In this review we discuss the recent theoretical progress and experimental advances for mapping the ultra-strong electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions via measurement of the Breit-Wheeler process.
Production of dark sector particles via resonant positron annihilation on atomic electrons

Abstract:Resonant positron annihilation on atomic electrons provides a powerful method to search for light new particles coupled to $e^+e^-$. Reliable estimates of production rates require a detailed characterization of electron momentum distributions. We describe a general method that harnesses the target material Compton profile to properly include electron velocity effects in resonant annihilation cross-sections. We additionally find that high $Z$ atoms can efficiently act as particle physics accelerators, providing a density of relativistic electrons that allows to extend by several times the experimental mass reach.

Production mechanism of hot nuclei in violent collisions in the Fermi energy domain

Abstract:A production mechanism of highly excited nuclei formed in violent collisions in the Fermi energy domain is investigated. The collision of two nuclei is decomposed into several stages which are treated separately. Simplified exciton concept is used for the description of pre-equilibrium emission. A modified spectator-participant scenario is used where motion along classical Coulomb trajectories is assumed. The participant and one of the spectator zones undergo incomplete fusion. Excitation energies of both cold and hot fragment are determined. Results of the calculation are compared to recent experimental data in the Fermi energy domain. Data on hot projectile-like, mid-velocity and fusion-like sources are described consistently. Geometric aspects of pre-equilibrium emission are revealed. Explanations to previously unexplained experimental phenomena are given. Energy deposited into non-thermal degrees of freedom is estimated.

The differential cross section and the analyzing power are calculated with taking into account higher powers of expansion on $Z\alpha$. Pure Coulomb and screened potential are considered.

Positronium Formation for Positron Scattering from Helium Ion

Abstract:Positronium (Ps) formation processes from helium ions by positron impact are studied using the two-channel two-center eikonal final state-continuum initial distorted wave method. The Ps (n = 1 and 2) and total Ps formation cross sections are calculated from the threshold to the high energy region, and the results are compared with other theoretical calculations available in the literature. It is found that the present results agree reasonably well with the close-coupling calculations, while other predictions, such as the Coulomb-Born approximation, the optical potential method, and the recent classical trajectory Monte Carlo method (Naginey 2014 Phys. Rev. A 89, 062704), are all much higher in the entire energy region. The maximum positions of the Ps(n) formation cross sections in our present work are in good agreement with the wave vector matching model of (Charlton 2014 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 39, 4575). Finally, we discuss the scaling law of the Ps(n) formation cross sections with respect to the principal quantum number n of the Ps atom.

Abstract:The production of electron-positron pairs in a vacuum neutron star magnetosphere is investigated for both low (compared to the Schwinger one) and high magnetic fields. The case of a strong longitudinal electric field where the produced electrons and positrons acquire a stationary Lorentz factor in a short time is considered. The source of electron-positron pairs has been calculated with allowance made for the pair production by curvature and synchrotron photons. Synchrotron photons are shown to make a major contribution to the total pair production rate in a weak magnetic field. At the same time, the contribution from bremsstrahlung photons may be neglected. The existence of a time delay due to the finiteness of the electron and positron acceleration time leads to a great reduction in the electron-positron plasma generation rate compared to the case of a zero time delay. The effective local source of electron-positron pairs has been constructed. It can be used in the hydrodynamic equations that describe the development of a cascade after the absorption of a photon from the cosmic gamma-ray background in a neutron star magnetosphere.
Three-dimensional calculations of positron creation in supercritical collisions of heavy nuclei

Abstract:Energy--angle differential and total probabilities of positron creation in slow supercritical collisions of two identical heavy nuclei are calculated beyond the monopole approximation. The time-dependent Dirac equation (TDDE) for positrons is solved using the generalized pseudospectral method in modified prolate spheroidal coordinates, which are well-suited for description of close collisions in two-center quantum systems. In the frame of reference where the quasimolecular axis is fixed, the rotational coupling term is added to the Hamiltonian. Unlike our previous calculations, we do not discard this term and retain it when solving the TDDE. Both three-dimensional angle-resolved and angle-integrated energy distributions of outgoing positrons are obtained. Three-dimensional angle-resolved distributions exhibit a high degree of isotropy. For the collision energies in the interval 6 to 8 MeV/u, the influence of the rotational coupling on the distributions and total positron creation probabilities is quite small.

Abstract:The production of light nuclei in heavy -ion collisions is an excellent probe for studying the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics and for the search of a critical end point. In this work we apply a hybrid approach in which we study the light nuclei production in the afterburner stage of central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=7.7$, 14.5 and 19.6 GeV. In this stage, light nuclei are produced dynamically in $4\leftrightarrow 2$ catalysis reactions. A comparison of the dynamic production and a coalescence approach is presented for transverse momentum spectra of deuterons, tritons, $^3\rm He$ nuclei and hypertritons and ratios of light nuclei yields. A good agreement with the experimentally measured yield of nuclei is found and we proceed to further investigate the production mechanisms of light nuclei by calculating the rates of the important channels for the formation and disintegration. We find that the afterburner stage is essential for the description of light nuclei formation in heavy-ion collisions, as light nuclei undergo a large number of interactions.

Supercritically Charged Objects and Electron-Positron Pair Creation

Abstract:We investigate the stability and e(+)e(-) pair creation of supercritically charged superheavy nuclei, udQM nuggets, strangelets, and strangeon nuggets based on the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The model parameters are fixed by reproducing masses and charge properties of these supercritically charged objects reported in earlier publications. It is found that udQM nuggets, strangelets, and strangeon nuggets may be more stable than Fe-56 at the baryon number A. 315, 5 x 10(4), and 1.2 x 10(8), respectively. For those stable against neutron emission, the most massive superheavy element has a baryon number similar to 965, while udQM nuggets, strangelets, and strangeon nuggets need to have baryon numbers larger than 39, 433, and 2.7 x 10(5). The e(+)e(-) pair creation will inevitably start for superheavy nuclei with charge numbers Z >= 177, for udQM nuggets with Z >= 163, for strangelets with Z >= 192, and for strangeon nuggets with Z >= 212. A universal relation Q/R-e = (m(e) - (mu) over tilde (e))/alpha is obtained at a given electron chemical potential (mu) over tilde (e), where Q is the total charge and Re the radius of electron cloud. The maximum number of Q without causing ethorne- pair creation is then fixed by taking (mu) over tilde (e) = -me. For supercritically charged objects with (mu) over tilde (e) < -m(e), the decay rate for ethorne- pair production is estimated based on the Jeffreys-Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (JWKB) approximation. It is found that most positrons are emitted at t less than or similar to 10(-15) s, while a long lasting positron emission can be observed for large objects with R greater than or similar to 1000 fm. The emission of positrons and electronpositron annihilation from supercritically charged objects may be partially responsible for the short gamma-ray burst during the merger of binary compact stars, the 511 keV continuum emission, as well as the narrow faint emission lines in x-ray spectra from galaxies and galaxy clusters.

Abstract:The theoretical and experimental aspects of particle production from the strong equivalent photon fluxes present at high energy hadron colliders are reviewed. The goal is to show how photons at hadron colliders can improve what we have learnt from experiments with lepton beams. Experiments during the last 5-10 years have shown the feasibility of studying photoproduction in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions. The experimental and theoretical development has revealed new opportunities as well as challenges.

Abstract:In this work, the results for cross sections of central exclusive exotic particles production in future linear electron-positron colliders are presented. These results show that the central production of charginos, dilatons, radions, axions and technipions can be measurable for the center-of-mass energies for these colliders. The results presented here, when compared with the production in hadronic colliders, have a smaller cross section, but with the advantage that the electron-positron collision does not have remnants coming from hadronic dissociation.

Abstract:In this study we investigate dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions from root s(NN) = 8 GeV to 5 TeV with a focus on the competition between the thermal QGP radiation and the semi-leptonic decays from correlated D-meson pairs. As a 'tool' we employ the partonhadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach incorporating for the first time a fully microscopic treatment of the charm dynamics and their semi-leptonic decays. We find that the dileptons from correlated D-meson decays dominate the 'thermal' radiation from the QGP in central Pb+Pb collisions at the intermediate masses (1.2 GeV < M < 3 GeV) for root s(NN) > 40 GeV, while for root s(NN) = 5 to 20 GeV the contribution from D, (D) over bar decays to the intermediate mass dilepton spectra is subleading such that one should observe a rather clear signal from the QGP radiation. We, furthermore, study the PT-spectra and the R-AA(pT) of single electrons at different energies.

Abstract:Pseudoscalar mesons can be produced and studied in high-energy electron-nucleus scattering. We review and extend our previous theoretical analysis of meson production in the nuclear Coulomb field. The P→γγ decay rates are most directly determined for mesons produced in the double-Coulomb region where both photons are nearly real, and provided the hadronic-background contributions remain small. The larger the mass of the meson the higher the electron energy needed to assure such favorable conditions.
