Abstract:The production of light nuclei in heavy -ion collisions is an excellent probe for studying the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics and for the search of a critical end point. In this work we apply a hybrid approach in which we study the light nuclei production in the afterburner stage of central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=7.7$, 14.5 and 19.6 GeV. In this stage, light nuclei are produced dynamically in $4\leftrightarrow 2$ catalysis reactions. A comparison of the dynamic production and a coalescence approach is presented for transverse momentum spectra of deuterons, tritons, $^3\rm He$ nuclei and hypertritons and ratios of light nuclei yields. A good agreement with the experimentally measured yield of nuclei is found and we proceed to further investigate the production mechanisms of light nuclei by calculating the rates of the important channels for the formation and disintegration. We find that the afterburner stage is essential for the description of light nuclei formation in heavy-ion collisions, as light nuclei undergo a large number of interactions.

Abstract:With the kinetic freeze-out nucleons and antinucleons obtained from the quark combination model, we study the production of light nuclei and antinuclei in the (anti-)nucleon coalescence mechanism in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We derive analytic formulas of the momentum distributions of different light nuclei and apply them to compute transverse momentum (pT) spectra of (anti-)deuterons (d , d ̄) and (anti-)tritons (t, t ̄) in Au-Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4 GeV . We find that the experimental data available for these pT spectra can be well reproduced. We further study the yields and yield ratios of different light (anti-)nuclei and naturally explain their interesting behaviors as a function of the collision energy. We especially point out that the multiparticle yield ratio tp/d2 should be carefully corrected from hyperon weak decays for protons to probe the production characteristics of light nuclei. Abstract:Light nuclei production as a result of nuclear coalescence effect can give some signals on final state of Quark Gluon Plasma formation. We are studying the behavior of nuclear modification factor as a function of different variables using the simulated data coming from the FASTMC generator. This data is necessary to extract information on coalescence mechanism from experimental data on high energy nuclear-nuclear interactions.

Abstract:We develop a kinetic approach to the production of light nuclei up to mass number A⩽4 in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions by including them as dynamic degrees of freedom. The conversions between nucleons and light nuclei during the collisions are incorporated dynamically via the breakup of light nuclei by a nucleon and their reverse reactions. We also include the Mott effect on light nuclei; i.e., a light nucleus will no longer be bound if the phase-space density of its surrounding nucleons is too large. With this kinetic approach, we obtain a reasonable description of the measured yields of light nuclei in central Au+Au collisions at energies of 0.25AGeV – 1.0AGeV by the FOPI Collaboration. Our study also indicates that the observed enhancement of the α -particle yield at low incident energies can be attributed to a weaker Mott effect on the α particle, which makes it more difficult to dissolve in nuclear medium, as a result of its much larger binding energy. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.108.L031601 ©2023 American Physical Society

Light nuclei photoproduction in relativistic heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions

Abstract:We have investigated light nuclei pair photoproduction in relativistic heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions. As a first attempt, we employ our previously developed quantum electrodynamics model, which incorporates a wave-packet description of initial nuclei, to compute the cross section for proton-antiproton pair photoproduction. The effective vertex for the photon and proton interaction is chosen based on studies of two-photon exchange effects in hadron physics. We present the transverse momentum, invariant mass, and azimuthal angle distributions of proton-antiproton pairs at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions. We observe a $\cos(2\phi)$ modulation and an almost negligible $\cos(4\phi)$ modulation in the azimuthal angle distribution. Our studies helps us better understand the matter generated by light.

Abstract:In heavy-ion collisions, understanding how light nuclei species are produced can provide insight into the nature of hadronic interactions in extreme conditions. It can also shed light on understanding the matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter searches in astrophysical processes. To investigate the production mechanism of light nuclei such as deuteron, triton, and helium-3, we use a naive coalescence afterburner coupled to the well-known $``$A Multi-Phase Transport model" (AMPT). We focus on studying the production of light nuclei in central Au+Au collisions at different center of mass energies ($\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}$ = 19.6, 39, and 200 GeV) and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}$ = 2.76 TeV, at mid-rapidity. We generate events with the string melting version of AMPT, and feed the information of the nucleons with spatial and momentum conditions into the coalescence afterburner. Our study reports differential and integrated yields in transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) of the light nuclei in different center of mass energies. We also estimate the coalescence parameters ($B_A$) as a function of $p_{\rm{T}}$ and collision energy for (anti-)deuterons, tritons and helium-3s for Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions, which are compared to other light nuclei production studies. All results are compared with measurements from the STAR and ALICE experiments.

Abstract:The coalescence model based on nucleon distribution functions from an isospin-dependent transport model is used to study the production of deuteron, triton, and 3He from heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate energies. It is found that the emission time of these light clusters depends on their masses. For clusters with same momentum per nucleon, heavier ones are emitted earlier. Both the yield and energy spectrum of light clusters are sensitive to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, with more light clusters produced in the case of a stiff symmetry energy. On the other hand, effects due to the stiffness of the isoscalar part of nuclear equation of state and the medium dependence of nucleon–nucleon cross sections on light cluster production are unimportant. We have also studied the correlation functions of clusters, and they are affected by the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy as well, with the stiff symmetry energy giving a stronger anti-correlation of light clusters, particularly for those with large kinetic energies. Dependence of light cluster production on the centrality and incident energy of heavy-ion collisions as well as the mass of the reaction system is also investigated.

Abstract:The issue of cluster production in heavy-ion collisions is addressed in a new manner, by implementing cluster correlation into the quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) transport model. We demonstrate for the first time, the good potentialities of this popular transport approach in the description of light cluster production including the deuteron, triton, $^{3}$He and $\alpha$ particle in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. Both the INDRA and FOPI experimental data of the total multiplicities of light clusters and the charge distributions of heavier fragments are reasonably reproduced by the unified approach. The effects of both the cluster binding energies and the pauli repulsion are also shown to play crucial roles in the production of clusters.

Abstract:We present results of simulations of light-nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at a collision energy of sNN=3 GeV within the updated Three-fluid Hydrodynamics-based Event Simulator Extended by UrQMD (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics) final State interactions (THESEUS). The results are compared with recent STAR data. The light-nuclei production is treated within the thermodynamical approach on an equal basis with hadrons. The only additional parameter related to the light nuclei is the energy density of late freeze-out that imitates the afterburner stage of the collision because the light nuclei do not participate in the UrQMD evolution. It is found that the late freeze-out is preferable for deuterons, tritons, and He3 . Remarkably, the He4 observables are better reproduced with the standard freeze-out. This suggests that the He4 nuclei better survive in the afterburner stage because they are more spatially compact and tightly bound objects. This is an argument in favor of dynamical treatment of light nuclei. The simulations indicate that the collision dynamics is determined by the hadronic phase. The calculated results reveal a not perfect, but good reproduction of the data on bulk observables and directed flow. Abstract:The production of light nuclei and hyper-nuclei in heavy-ion collisions, particularly at high baryon density, is crucial for understanding the dynamical evolution of the collision system and exploring the internal state of nuclear matter of compacted stellar object. Despite being a topic of ongoing debate, an improved theoretical understanding is necessary. In this work, production of light nuclei ($d$, $t$, $^{3}$He, $^{4}$He) and hyper-nuclei ($^{3}_{\Lambda}$H, $^{4}_{\Lambda}$H) was investigated using the JAM microscopic transport model combined with an afterburner coalescence process at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} =$ 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. The formation of a specific nucleus during the coalescence process is determined by its Wigner function. The comparison of the calculations for $\mathrm{p_T}$ spectra, average $\mathrm{p_T}$, and rapidity distributions to the measurements from the STAR experiment was performed. We investigated the dynamic information carried by light nuclei and determined the averaged spatial distance $\langle \Delta R \rangle$ and momentum difference $\langle \Delta P \rangle$ of constituent nucleons ($\Lambda$) for each nucleus species.

Abstract:The energy densities reached in high-energy hadronic collisions at the LHC allow significant production of light (anti)nuclei. Their production yields have been measured as a function of p T and charged-particle multiplicity in different collision systems and at different center-of-mass energies by ALICE. One of the most interesting results obtained from such a large variety of experimental data is that the dominant production mechanism of light (anti)nuclei seems to depend solely on the event charged-particle multiplicity. Evidence for this comes from the continuous evolution of the deuteron15 to-proton and 3 He-to-proton ratios with the event multiplicity across different collision systems and energies. The characterization of the light nuclei production mechanism is complemented by measurements of their production yields in jets and in the underlying event. In this paper, recent results on light nuclei production in small collision systems are shown and discussed in the context of the statistical hadronization and coalescence models. In addition, recent results on the deuteron production in jets and new preliminary results on its production in the underlying event measured in pp collisions at √ S = 13 TeV are discussed.

Laminar Branched Surfaces in 3-manifolds

Abstract:We define a laminar branched surface to be a branched surface satisfying the following conditions: (1) Its horizontal boundary is incompressible; (2) there is no monogon; (3) there is no Reeb component; (4) there is no sink disk (after eliminating trivial bubbles in the branched surface). The first three conditions are standard in the theory of branched surfaces, and a sink disk is a disk branch of the branched surface with all branch directions of its boundary arcs pointing inwards. We will show in this paper that every laminar branched surface carries an essential lamination, and any essential lamination that is not a lamination by planes is carried by a laminar branched surface. This implies that a 3-manifold contains an essential lamination if and only if it contains a laminar branched surface.

Abstract:Momentum correlation functions of light (anti)nuclei formed by the coalescence mechanism of (anti)nucleons are calculated for several central heavy-ion collision systems, namely $_{5}^{10}\textrm{B}+_{5}^{10}\textrm{B}$, $_{8}^{16}\textrm{O}+_{8}^{16}\textrm{O}$, $_{20}^{40}\textrm{Ca}+_{20}^{40}\textrm{Ca}$ as well as $_{79}^{197}\textrm{Au}+_{79}^{197}\textrm{Au}$ in different centralities at center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 GeV within the framework of A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model complemented by the Lednick$\acute{y}$ and Lyuboshitz analytical method. Momentum correlation functions for identical or nonidentical light (anti)nuclei are constructed and analyzed for the above collision systems. The Au + Au results demonstrate that emission of light (anti)nuclei occurs from a source with smaller space extent in more peripheral collisions. The effect of system-size on the momentum correlation functions of identical or nonidentical light (anti)nuclei is also explored by several collision system in central collisions. The results indicate that the emission source-size of light (anti)nuclei pairs deduced from their momentum correlation functions and system-size is self-consistent. Momentum correlation functions of nonidentical light nuclei pairs gated on velocity are applied to infer the average emission sequence of them. The results illustrate that protons are emitted in average on a similar time scale with neutrons but earlier than deuterons or tritons in the small relative momentum region. In addition, larger interval of the average emission order among them is exhibited for smaller collision systems or at more peripheral collisions.

Abstract:Many probes are proposed to determine the quark-gluon plasma and explore its properties in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Some of them are related to initial states of the collisions, such as collective flow, Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlation, chiral magnetic effects and so on. The initial states can come from geometry overlap of the colliding nuclei, fluctuations or nuclear structure with the intrinsic geometry asymmetry. The initial geometry asymmetry can transfer to the final momentum distribution in the aspect of hydrodynamics during the evolution of the fireball. Different from traditional methods for nuclear structure study, the ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions could provide a potential platform to investigate nuclear structures with the help of the final-state observables after the fireball expansion. This chapter first presents a brief introduction of the initial states in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and then delivers a mini-review for the nuclear structure effects on experimental observables in the relativistic energy domain.
