Abstract:Although widely used in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, thiophenol has brought about a series of ecological problems due to its high toxicity. Therefore, the development of efficient methods to discriminate thiophenols from aliphatic thiols is of great importance. In this work, a new reaction-based turn-on red fluorescence probe for the detection of thiophenols has been developed for the first time by employing dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran (DCM) as a fluorescence reporter and 2,4-dinitrobenzene-sulfonate (DNBS) as a recognition unit. The probe displayed a highly selective and sensitive (63 fold-fluorescence enhancement) response to thiophenols over aliphatic thiols. Additionally, the probe also exhibited a large Stokes shift (159 nm) and the detection limit reached as low as 8.3 nM. Moreover, this probe was also proved suitable for the quantification of thiophenol in real environmental water samples.

Abstract:Thiophenols are a class of highly toxic pollutant compounds, which can cause severe damage to the central nervous system and other nervous systems after long-term exposure. Therefore, it is of significance to develop an effective method to detect trace thiophenols in the environment. Herein, we synthesized a dicyanoisophorone-based near-infrared fluorescent probe (probe 1) with large stokes shift (λem − λabs = 203 nm) for the selective detection of thiophenols. Probe 1 exhibited very high response speed (less than 200 S), sensitivity, and selectivity towards thiophenols, regardless of the presence of aliphatic thiols and other analytes. The detection limit was as low as 3.4 nM and the signal-to-background ratio of fluorescence intensity reached 30. Moreover, probe 1 displayed ultrasensitivity and high reliability in the quantitative detection of trace thiophenol in three river water samples.

Abstract:Fast, highly selective and sensitive thiophenol probes are highly desirable in the field of bioimaging and environmental monitoring. For that, based on the mechanism that thiophenol can effectively cleave the sulfonamide bond selectively, we herein report a dicyanoisophorone-based Red-emitting/NIR probe for thiophenol detection. This probe had some desirable properties such as rapid response, high selectivity and sensitivity, remarkable large Stokes shift (181 nm), Red-emitting/NIR fluorescence region and low LOD value (80 nM, according to 3σ/s). Moreover, this novel Red-emitting/NIR probe can potentially be applied to the detection of thiophenols in real water samples quantitatively and fluorescent imaging in living cells and zebrafishes.

Abstract:Thiophenols as high toxic environmental pollutants are poisonous for animals and aquatic organisms. Therefore, it is indispensable to monitor thiophenols in the environment. Herein, a novel near-infrared fluorescent probe was developed for the detection of thiophenols, which was easily prepared by one-step coupling of 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride with Nile blue. The probe showed a significant near infrared (similar to 675 nm) fluorescence "turn-on" response to thiophenols with some good features including chromogenic reaction, high sensitivity and selectivity, fast response, near-infrared emission along with low detection limit (1.8 nM). The probe was employed to rapidly and visually determine thiophenols in several industrial wastewaters with good recoveries (90-110%). Moreover, this probe has been demonstrated good capability for imaging thiophenol in HeLa cells.

Abstract:Thiophenol (PhSH) is an important sulfhydryl compound in organic synthesis, but it is also a volatile environmental pollutant with high toxicity to organisms. Herein, we reported a novel near-infrared (NIR) probe (1) for turn-on fluorescence detection of PhSH. The probe was prepared by coupling 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) to a dicyanoisophorone-based fluorophore (2). PhSH can specifically perform a nucleophilic aromatic substitution on probe 1 and result in the release of fluorophore 2, thus achieving a turn-on fluorescence response (λem = 693 nm). A dramatic color change from red (λabs = 525 nm) to blue (λabs = 668 nm) was also observed. This fluorescent assay displayed a large Stokes shift (∼133 nm) and a high sensitivity for PhSH, as well as a low detection limit (34 nM). Moreover, probe 1 was successfully applied to monitor PhSH in real water samples and image PhSH in living cells.

Abstract:Though a number of on-off or off-on fluorescent probes have been developed for the detection of thiophenol by using its unique recognition groups, such as 2, 4-dinitrophenyl ether, 2, 4-dinitrophenyl sulfonamide, and 2, 4-dinitrophenyl sulfonate, up to now, there are few probes that can detect thiophenol by the proportional fluorescence signal. We developed a ratiometric fluorescent probe with coumarin pyridine derivative as fluorophore and 2, 4-dinitrophenyl ether moiety as the sensing unit which could be used to detect thiophenol derivatives by the aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. This probe (CPBPN) displayed significant change in fluorescence ratio (256 fold) to result in a more reliable analysis by self-calibration and a relatively low detection limit of 24 nM toward 4-methylthiophenol (MTP) within 30 min to achieve more sensitivity. Besides, the probe was also applied to detect the presence of thiophenol derivatives in actual water samples and fluorescence imaging in living cells. Abstract:Thiophenol is known as a class of highly toxic pollutant that can damage to the environment and biological health. It is great significant to detect thiophenol rapidly and sensitively in living cells and environment samples. Hence, we designed and developed two reliable and efficient fluorescent probes that can monitor thiophenol rapidly. The two probes had superior properties in sensitivity and selectivity in the solvent system of pH = 7.4, which had high reactivity to thiophenol, and basically had no response to other sulfur compounds. These probes had a superior range of linearity and low limit of detection for thiophenols. The limits of detection for probe A and probe B (calculated by 3 sigma/k) are 63.9 nM and 24.7 nM, respectively. These probes have been applied to detect thiophenol in environmental water with good recovery. Moreover, probe B has been used to visualize thiophenol in living cells. Therefore, the fluorescent probes can provide an effective way to monitor thiophenols in environmental water and in cell imaging.

Abstract:The development of highly sensitive and selective detection techniques for the discrimination of relevant toxic benzenethiols and biologically active aliphatic thiols is of considerable importance in the fields of chemical, biological, and environmental sciences. In this article, we describe a new design of reaction-based fluorescent probe for discrimination of thiophenols over aliphaticthiols through intramolecular charge transfer pathways using N-butyl-4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide as a fluorophore, the strongly electron-withdrawing 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonamide group as a recognition unit, and 2,3-dihydroimidazo-[1,2-a] pyridine moiety as a linker. This rational design not only affords finely tunable spectroscopic properties by adding 2,3-dihydroimidazo-[1,2-a] pyridine moiety but also provides the chance to regulate the selectivity and sensitivity of the probe due to the formation of a new type of potentially reversible sulfonamide bond through 4-dimethylaminopyridine-like resonance. The developed probe displayed high off/on signal ratios, good selectivity, and sensitivity with a detection limit of 20 nM and a relative standard deviation of 1.7% for 11 replicate detections of 0.33 μM thiophenol and was successfully applied to the determination of thiophenols in water samples with quantitative recovery (from 94% to 97%) demonstrating its application prospect for thiophenols sensing in environmental and biological sciences.

Abstract:A water-soluble fluorescent probe for monitoring thiophenols based on a GFP-type TPC-OH fluorophore and a 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether recognition unit was designed. This probe possessed remarkable sensitivity and specificity toward thiophenols in an almost pure aqueous solution, and also showed good interference immunity to other related analytes including aliphatic mercaptans. Meanwhile, the probe displayed a prominent linear correlation between the thiophenol concentrations in the range of 0 to 20 M and the fluorescence intensities at 492 nm, and the detection limit was as low as 33 nM. More strikingly, probe 1 was employed to visualize thiophenol in both living cells and zebrafish, which further demonstrated that probe 1 was a powerful practical tool in monitoring thiophenols in living systems.

Abstract:A benzoquinolizine coumarin-based fluorescent probe was developed for detecting thiophenols, demonstrating the superior fluorescence properties caused by the decay of the twisting effect of N,N-diethylamino group of coumarin. It discriminated thiophenols from various analytes including aliphatic thiols with good selectivity and displayed ∼700-fold fluorescence intensity enhancement and a remarkable limit of detection (4.5 nM). The new probe also can be applied to quantitative determine the concentrations of thiophenol in water samples and living cells.

Abstract:By introducing phenothiazine framework as an electron donating component, we have developed a unique deep-red functional fluorescent dye 5b, bearing excellent photophysical properties. Using dye 5b as a platform, we further constructed a novel red emitting fluorescent probe (1) for thiophenol on the basis of a unique thiophenol-mediated substitution-cyclization-hydrolysis reaction cascade. Probe 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive response to thiophenol over aliphatic thiols, with a detection limit of 2.9 nM (S/N = 3). Moreover, this probe features a remarkable large Stokes shift (141 nm) in PB buffer (pH= 7.4, containing 1 mM CTAB). Importantly, it was successfully applied for detection of thiophenol both in real water samples and in living HeLa cells, indicating that this probe has great potential for practical applications. Abstract:A phthalimide-based fluorescent probe for the detection of thiophenol was developed based on the combination of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms. Abstract:2,7-Naphthyridine derivatives were developed as fluorophores for the first time to design two fluorescence probes, AND-DNP and ND-DNP, which can be applied for detecting thiophenol in aqueous media. Comparing with ND-DNP, AND-DNP showed more favorable properties such as lower background, larger Stokes shift, and higher fluorescence quantum yield for detecting thiophenol. Moreover, the experimental results were verified by theoretical calculations. Hence, AND-DNP was selected as the superior fluorescence probe to detect thiophenol because of its high sensitivity and selectivity. Based on the experimental results, AND-DNP showed a remarkably larger Stokes shift (225 nm), faster response speed (30 s) and higher fluorescence enhancement (240-fold) than most other fluorescent probes for thiophenol reported in the literature. For an extended application, AND-DNP was applied to detect thiophenol quantitatively in real water samples. Meanwhile, AND-DNP also detected thiophenol via red emission in living A549 cells and zebrafish. All these results proved AND-DNP's potential value as an accurate probe for imaging thiophenol in different environments.

Abstract:A new fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized according to the photo-induced electron transfer theory (PET) and the results of density functional theory calculation. The synthesized probe had a larger Stokes shift (130 nm) and double emission peak in response to highly toxic thiophenols, which could be applied in rapid and high sensitive detection of thiophenol in aqueous solution. A 25-fold fluorescence intensity enhancement was achieved and the fluorescent intensity at 460 rim had a linear relationship to the thiophenol in concentration range of 0-2.0 mu M. Furthermore, a remarkable detection limit (6 nM) could be achieved. 50-fold other species have no interference to the detection. The practical utility of the probe was demonstrated by live HeLa cells imaging and thiophenol detection in real water samples. In linear range of 0-2.0 mu M, the probe showed good recoveries (from 95% to 108%) for thiophenol detection in natural water samples. This method possesses high sensitivity, lower detection limit and fast response (i.e., 10 min, which is shorter than the average time response of other reported methods), indicating that the synthesized probe would be promising for real-time detection of thiophenols.

Abstract:Thiophenols are a class of highly toxic environmental pollutant, hence it is very necessary to monitor thiophenols in environment and living cells with an efficient and reliable method. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe for thiophenols has been developed, which exhibited a colorimetric and fluorescence turn-on dual response towards thiophenols with good selectivity and fast response. The sensing mechanism for thiophenols was attributed to nucleophilic substitution reaction, which was confirmed by HPLC. The probe exhibited good recovery (from 90% to 107%) and low limit of detection for thiophenols (37 nM) in industrial wastewater. Moreover, the probe has been successfully employed to visualize thiophenol in living cells. Therefore, the fluorescent probe has good capability for monitoring thiophenols in environmental samples and biological systems.

Abstract:A novel colorimetric and fluorescent thiophenol probe based on dicyanoisophorone has been successfully achieved, which has low-cost, easy operation, high selectivity, sensitivity and stability. The chemosensor shows a large Stokes shift and approximately 170 nm when excited at 510 nm. ISO-DiNO 2 could be utilized as "Turn-on" and a naked-eyes chemosensor to detect PhSH, which is accompanied by a distinct color shift from red to dark purple with strong red fluorescence at 365 nm UV-light. Its limit of detection was determined to be 1.15 μM. More importantly, ISO-DiNO 2 can react instantaneously (<10 s) with PhS − . In addition, ISO-DiNO 2 has been utilized in test paper strips, water sample together with imaging of PhS − in living Raw264.7 cells, demonstrating that ISO-DiNO 2 has excellent and promising applications.

Abstract:A squaraine-based far-red/near-infrared fluorescent probe (SQ-DNBS) was exploited for thiophenol detection. SQ-DNBS is a colorimetric and "off-on" fluorometric dual-channel "naked-eye" chemosensor showing high selectivity, high sensitivity (detection limit: 9.9 nM), and rapid response to thiophenol in aqueous solution. SQ-DNBS also can be used in practical applications for the detection of thiophenol in water samples. Photophysical and spectral characterization results revealed that the probing mechanism of SQ-DNBS toward thiophenol lies in the thiolate-mediated cleavage reaction. Our discovery demonstrates the potential of the arylmethylene-squaraine skeleton as a promising fluorophore unit to construct high-performance far-red/near-infrared chemosensors.
