Abstract:Iodine absorption cells are extensively employed by high-spectral-resolution Lidars (HSRLs) for aerosol optical properties and atmosphere state parameters profiling. To the best of our knowledge, the optimal design of the parameters of iodine cells has not been talked about systematically. In this paper, a heuristic method based on multi-objective concept is proposed for the design of iodine cells employed in HSRLs for aerosol profiling, and the method can be also applied to different types of HSRLs. The bi-objective model is established based on the retrieval error analysis of HSRL and then the Pareto optimal solutions are obtained through the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). The performance of different absorption lines are compared according to the Pareto solution sets, and the stability of transmittance characteristics of different absorption lines are discussed through sensitivity analysis. The results are expected to provide guidance for the design of HSRLs based on iodine absorption filters.

Abstract:By using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 355 nm to pump CH4,the first Stokes laser of its S1(395.60 nm) was gained and used as Raman laser recourse λon of a differential absorption lidar(DIAL) system for NO2 measurement.By enlarging the duration of laser and adjusting the focal length of couple lens and the gas pressure of Raman cell,the Stokes scattering laser of 395.60 nm,which was characterized by high energy conversion efficiency and good stability,was obtained.The scattering laser has been successfully used as λon of a DIAL system to measure NO2.

Abstract:Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) for detecting atmospheric pollution is used extensively for its high precision and spatial resolution. The selection of the suitable absorption wavelength and the stimulation and modulation of the corresponding laser source are of key importance for DIAL system. This literature presents first a new approach for attaining the specific absorption wavelength in design of the new type NO2-DIAL. The third harmonic of Nd:YA Glaser itself is taken as the selected lambda(on) (354.7 nm), and is converted to the circularly or elliptically polarized laser to pump the D-2 Raman cell, acquiring plentiful frequency spectrum of stimulated vibrational and rotational Raman scattering light, among which the first-order pure stimulated rotational Raman scattering light nearest to the pumping laser wavelength is taken as the lambda(off) (359.9 nm) for DIAL. The polarization state of the pumping laser can be conveniently modulated by using a lambda/4 wave-plate. It is of large advantages in raising the technical performance and the economical efficiency. The technique will be very useful for DIAL to detect other constituents of atmospheric pollution.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (IR) laser spectroscopy is broadly used to study trace gas species in medical diagnostics, atmospheric monitoring, remote sensing, and industrial applications. Its capability to measure fundamental rovibrational bands due to the chemical functional groups in the most relevant gas molecules allows for high instrumental sensitivity. In this work, we used a target mid-IR wavelength laser diode to measure the concentration of CO2 gas. In addition, detecting the weak mid-IR molecular absorption bands of gases like CO2 at low concentrations requires increasing optical path lengths to be used. There are a number of methods that can potentially be used to lengthen the beam path in a spectroscopic system; the most obvious being to use a longer linear gas cell, which in some situations may suffice; however, space and volume requirements need to be considered. In this work, we used a circular multi-reflection (CMR) cell, which reflects the radiation back and forth through the sample medium multiple times greatly reducing the footprint size compared to a linear cell of equivalent path length. A CMR cell is designed and constructed so that it allows multi-reflections within the cell. The optical alignment of the cell and the convenience of changing the optical path length by adjusting its position with respect to the entering light beam are key advantages. This work will be used as the groundwork for designing an instrument for high-resolution measurement of gas abundances in planetary atmospheres.
Gas detection using cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with a bidirectional multi-pass cell and polarization beam-splitting optical path

Abstract:We demonstrate a substantial enhancement of gas Raman scattering using a bidirectional multi-pass cavity CERS system, which incorporates a polarization beam-splitting optical path. The system design allows the laser light to traverse the multi-pass cavity for four specific trips, satisfying the need for quick detection of various gas components. Our gas detection experiments using multi-pass cavities with different times of reflection indicate that the addition of polarization beam-splitting optical path gives 1.5 to 1.68 times enhancement of Raman signal compared with that of the system without polarization beam-splitting. For the detection of CH4, a limit of detection of 1.66 ppm was achieved with our system using a multi-pass cell with 41 times of reflection and an integration time of 30s. Our proposed design, which integrates a bidirectional multi-pass cavity with polarization beam-splitting optical path, gives an economical multicomponent gas detection system and a valuable tool for guiding the design and precise alignment of these cavities. This system shows significant promise for applications in e.g. human breath and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:This work presents the development of a cavity ring-down spectrometer (CRDS) designed for the detection of several molecules relevant for air pollution, including the second overtone of ro-vibration transitions from CO at 1.58 µm and NO at 1.79 µm. A unique feature of this CRDS is the use of custom mirrors with a reflectivity of about 99.99% from 1.52 to 1.80 µm, enabling efficient laser coupling into the cavity while ensuring a minimum detectable absorbance of 1.1 × 10-10 cm-1 within an integration time of about 1.2 s. In this work, the successful implementation of the current CRDS is demonstrated in two different wavelength regions. At 1.79 µm, the transitions R17.5 and R4.5 of the second overtone of NO are detected. At 1.58 µm, carbon dioxide and water vapor from untreated ambient air are measured, serving as an example to investigate the suitability of a post-processing procedure for the determination of the molar fraction in a multi-species composition. This post-processing procedure has the benefit of being calibration-free and SI-traceable. Additionally, CRDS measurements of gas mixtures containing CO and CO2 are also shown. In the future, the advantages of the developed cavity ring-down spectrometer will be exploited in order to perform fundamental studies on the transport processes of heterogeneous catalysis by locally resolving the gas phase near a working catalytic surface. The possibility to cover a broad wavelength region with this CRDS opens up the opportunity to investigate different catalytic reactions, including CO oxidation and NO reduction.

Abstract:Developments in mid-infrared Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL), for gas remote sensing, have received a significant amount of research in recent years. In this paper, a high repetition rate tunable mid-infrared DIAL, mounted on a mobile platform, has been built for long range remote detection of gas plumes. The lidar uses a solid-state tunable optical parametric oscillator laser, which can emit laser pulse with repetition rate of 500 Hz and between the band from 2.5 μm to 4 μm. A monitoring channel has been used to record the laser energy in real-time and correct signals. Convolution correction technology has also been incorporated to choose the laser wavelengths. Taking NO2 and SO2 as examples, lidar system calibration experiment and open field observation experiment have been carried out. The observation results show that the minimum detection sensitivity of NO2 and SO2 can reach 0.07 mg/m3, and 0.31 mg/m3, respectively. The effective temporal resolution can reach second level for the high repetition rate of the laser, which demonstrates that the system can be used for the real-time remote sensing of atmospheric pollution gas.

Abstract:Lowering threshold and enhancing intensity of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) have been a major focus of nonlinear optics. In our experiments, we combined SRS generation and amplification techniques to enhance the SRS signal. The amplification was achieved through a process called resonance effect, where the frequency difference between the pump laser and the Stokes light emitted from the working medium had self-matched with the vibrational energy level. The performance improvements included a higher SRS conversion efficiency, reaching up to 5.31%, approximately three times the value of a single sample cell efficiency of 1.739%, and realization of a cascaded SRS up to four orders extending from 461 to 997 nm. These Stokes and anti-Stokes coherent lights were generated coaxially to the pump beam as axial and conical ring beams, respectively, which can be explained by the four-wave mixing. This technique has the potential to contribute to the development of a multi-wavelength cascade Raman laser.

Abstract:The fast and in-line multigas detection is critical for a variety of industrial applications. In the present work, we demonstrate the utility of multiple-pass-enhanced Raman spectroscopy as a unique tool for sensitive industrial multigas detection. Instead of using spherical mirrors, D-shaped mirrors are chosen as cavity mirrors in our design, and 26 total passes are achieved in a simple and compact multiple-pass optical system. Due to the large number of passes achieved inside the multiple-pass cavity, experiments with ambient air show that the noise equivalent detection limit (3σ) of 7.6 Pa (N2), 8.4 Pa (O2) and 2.8 Pa (H2O), which correspond to relative abundance by volume at 1 bar total pressure of 76 ppm, 84 ppm and 28 ppm, can be achieved in one second with a 1.5 W red laser. Moreover, this multiple-pass Raman system can be easily upgraded to a multiple-channel detection system, and a two-channel detection system is demonstrated and characterized. High utilization ratio of laser energy (defined as the ratio of laser energy at sampling point to the laser output energy) is realized in this design, and high sensitivity is achieved in every sampling position. Compared with single-point sampling system, the back-to-back experiments show that LODs of 8.0 Pa, 8.9 Pa and 3.0 Pa can be achieved for N2, O2 and H2O in one second. Methods to further improve the system performance are also briefly discussed, and the analysis shows that similar or even better sensitivity can be achieved in both sampling positions for practical industrial applications.

Abstract:A spontaneous Raman scatting system was used to measure the O2(a1Δ) yield of singlet oxygen generator for chemical oxygen iodine laser. Many common experimental problems, such as fluctuations in laser power, dirty windows, and misalignment, can be ratioed out because of monitoring in the same measurement volume. The results were presented from the tests that conducted on 0.1 mol/s jet-type singlet oxygen generator. The error in the yield measurement is less than 8%.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength Raman lidar system which includes both vibrational rotational Raman and Mie scattering spectra has been designed and described. A retrieval algorithm for water vapor and temperature has also been developed based on the potential observations from this Raman lidar system. The performance of this retrieval method and the new lidar system has been evaluated with a synthetic test. Using the U.S. standard atmosphere model and main parameters of this lidar system, we have obtained signal to noise ratio (SNR) of water-vapor backscatter signals under different circumstances of aerosol content, pulse emission energy and signal integration time. With the model calculated backscatter signals, both atmospheric water-vapor and temperature profiles have been retrieved and their uncertainties have been analyzed. These synthetic tests indicate that our new lidar system can obtain profiles of water-vapor and temperature at both day and night time, but with different detection heights. The retrieval algorithm shows less than 30% relative error for water vapor mixing ratio and good accuracy with a minimum detection of temperature less than 2 K.

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosols play a pivotal role in the earth-atmospheric system. Analyzing their optical properties, specifically absorption and scattering coefficients, is essential for comprehending the impact of aerosols on climate. When different optical properties of aerosols are individually measured using multiple devices, cumulative errors in the detection results inevitably occur. To address this challenge, based on photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) and integrating sphere (IS) scattering enhancement, a compact gas cell (PASIS-Cell) was developed. The PASIS-Cell comprises a dual-T-type photoacoustic cell (DTPAC) and an IS. IS is coupled with DTPAC through a transparent quartz tube, thereby enhancing the scattering signal without compromising the acoustic characteristics of DTPAC. Concurrently, DTPAC can realize high-performance photoacoustic detection of absorption signal. Experimental results demonstrate that PASIS-Cell can simultaneously invert atmospheric aerosol absorption and scattering coefficients, with a minimum detection limit of less than 1 Mm -1 , showcasing its potential in the analysis of aerosol optical properties.

Analysis of Relative Wavelength Response Characterization and Its Effects on Scanned-Wms Gas Sensing*

Abstract:Our recently proposed three-step method showed the promising potential to improve the accuracy of relative wavelength response (RWR) characterization in the wavelength-modulation spectroscopy (WMS) over the commonly used summation method. A detailed comparison of the three-step method and the summation method, for the wavelength-scanned WMS gas-sensing, was performed with different laser parameters (modulation indexes and scan indexes) and gas properties (pressures and concentrations). Simulation results show that the accuracy of the predicted gas parameters is strongly limited by the RWR characterization with large modulation index and high gas pressure conditions. Both fitting residuals of RWR and errors of predicted gas parameters from the recently proposed three-step method are nearly 2 orders of magnitude smaller than those from the summation method. In addition, the three-step method is further improved by introducing a coupling term for the 2nd harmonic amplitude. Experiments with CO2 absorption transition at 6976.2026 cm−1 were conducted and validated the simulation analysis. The modified-three-step method presents an improved accuracy in RWR description with at least 5% smaller fitting residual for all conditions compared with the three-step method, although the deviation of the deduced CO2 concentrations between these two methods does not exceed 0.2%.
Collision Enhanced Raman Scattering (CERS): An Ultra-High Efficient Raman Enhancement Technique for Hollow Core Photonic Crystal Fiber Based Raman Spectroscopy Gas Analyzer

Abstract:Raman enhancement techniques are essential for gas analysis to increase the detection sensitivity of a Raman spectroscopy system. We have developed an efficient Raman enhancement technique called the collision-enhanced Raman scattering (CERS), where the active Raman gas as the analyte is mixed with a buffer gas inside the hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber (HCPCF) of a fiber-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (FERS) system. This results in an enhanced Raman signal from the analyte gas. In this study, we first showed that the intensity of the 587 cm−1 stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) peak of H2 confined in an HCPCF is enhanced by as much as five orders of magnitude by mixing with a buffer gas such as helium or N2. Secondly, we showed that the magnitudes of Raman enhancement depend on the type of buffer gas, with helium being more efficient compared to N2. This makes helium a favorable buffer gas for CERS. Thirdly, we applied CERS for Raman measurements of propene, a metabolically interesting volatile organic compound (VOC) with an association to lung cancer. CERS resulted in a substantial enhancement of propene Raman peaks. In conclusion, the CERS we developed is a simple and efficient Raman-enhancing mechanism for improving gas analysis. It has great potential for application in breath analysis for lung cancer detection.

Research on the Correction Algorithm for Ozone Inversion in Differential absorption Lidar

Abstract:Due to the complex and variable nature of the atmospheric conditions, traditional multi-wavelength differential absorption lidar (DIAL) methods often suffer from significant errors when inverting ozone concentrations. As the detection range increases, there is a higher demand for Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) in lidar signals. Based on this, the paper discusses the impact of different atmospheric factors on the accuracy of ozone concentration inversion. It also compares the advantages and disadvantages of the two-wavelength differential method and the three-wavelength dual-differential method under both noisy and noise-free conditions. Firstly, the errors caused by air molecular extinction, aerosol extinction, and backscatter terms in the inversion using the two-wavelength differential method were simulated. Secondly, the corrected inversion errors were obtained through direct correction and the introduction of a three-wavelength dual differential correction. Finally, addressing the issue of insufficient SNR in practical inversions, the inversion errors of the two correction methods were simulated by constructing lidar parameters and incorporating appropriate noise. The results indicate that the traditional two-wavelength differential algorithm is significantly affected by aerosols, making it more sensitive to aerosol concentration and structural changes. On the other hand, the three-wavelength dual differential algorithm requires a higher SNR in lidar signals. Therefore, we propose a novel strategy for inverting atmospheric ozone concentration, which prioritizes the use of the three-wavelength dual-differential method in regions with high SNR and high aerosol concentration. Conversely, the direct correction method utilizing the two-wavelength differential approach is used. This approach holds the potential for high-precision ozone concentration profile inversion under different atmospheric conditions.

Abstract:We propose polarization-selective Raman measurement as a decent method for single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SMSERS) verification. This approach features rapid acquisition of SMSERS events and appeals liberal requirements for analyte concentration. It is demonstrated as an efficient tool in sorting out dozens of SMSERS events from a large-scale plasmonic dimer array. In addition, it allows identification of a mixed SMSERS event containing two different individual molecules. In this article, the RPM method is employed to explore the underlying mechanisms of signal blinking, spectral wandering, and other unique characteristics in SMSERS. We observed synchronized blinking of different modes from one Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecule, but a disagreement is found in a mixed SMSERS event containing one R6G molecule and one crystal violet molecule. Our approach offers a reliable means to interpret SMSERS events in statistical terms and facilitate the fundamental understanding of SMSERS.
