Abstract:<span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1 outputmedium-all"> <h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus"> We present the results of a study of the relaxation and diffusion processes of rubidium atoms in a rubidium cell with an internal vapor source. The cell is an evacuated glass bulb characterized by the fact the source of atomic vapors in the form of a metal film of Rb has been evenly distributed throughout the inner surface of the bulb, and the paraffin film has also been uniformly distributed over the entire area and over the metal surface. Using laser optical pumping, we performed measurements of the relaxation time and the average number of bounces of optically pumped rubidium atoms in the bulb. We also measured the adsorption time of rubidium atoms by the paraffin coating and the diffusion coefficient of the rubidium atoms in the paraffin used. Abstract:Crystallization, while a common process in nature, remains one of the most mysterious phenomena. Understanding its physical mechanisms is essential for obtaining high-quality crystals. Typically, crystals grown by thermal evaporation or sublimation nucleate the substrate facing the evaporation source. Here, a novel vapor micro-turbulence mass transport mechanism in the growth process of ultrathin BiOCl single crystals has been revealed. In this mechanism, the precursor vapor bypasses the solid substrate, forming micro-turbulent vaporizing flows to nucleate on the surface of the substrate facing away from the evaporation source. Considering nucleation kinetics, fast shear flows are known to cause secondary nucleation, increasing nucleation quantity while decreasing the final size of the crystals. Thus, the nucleation and growth process of BiOCl crystals are controlled by adjusting the micro-turbulence intensity to reduce shear flow energy and dilate phase distribution, resulting in BiOCl crystals with uniform distribution and regular shape. Subsequent structural and morphological characterization confirms the high crystallization quality of the obtained crystals, and the performance of the constructed solar-blind photodetectors is comparable to that of similar devices. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of vapor mass transport and crystal growth techniques and may be useful for applications related to metal oxide crystals.

Abstract:Measurements were made to determine the density of rubidium dimer vapor in paraffin-coated cells. The number density of dimers and atoms in similar paraffin-coated and uncoated cells was measured by optical spectroscopy. Due to the relatively low melting point of paraffin, a limited temperature range of 43–80 °C was explored, with the lower end corresponding to a dimer density of less than 107 cm− 3. With 1 min integration time, a sensitivity to dimer number density of better than 106 cm− 3 was achieved. No significant difference in dimer density between the cells was observed.

Abstract:We present the results of a study of the diffusion of Rb atoms in paraffin - coated resonant vapor cells. We have modeled the Rb diffusion both in the cell and in the coating, assuming that the main loss of Rb atoms is due to the physical absorption of the atoms by the glass substrate. It is demonstrated that the equilibrium atomic density in the cell is a monotonic function of the thickness of the paraffin coating: the density increases with an increase in the thickness of the coating. The diffusion coefficient for rubidium in paraffin thin films has been determined to be equal to 4,7*10^-7 cm^2/s. The results of the experiment might be useful for a better understanding of the details involved in the processes of the interaction of alkali atoms with a paraffin coating.

Abstract:To understand the optical properties of atoms in solid state matrices, the absorption, excitation and emission spectra of rubidium doped thin-films of argon, krypton and xenon were investigated in detail. A two-dimensional spectral analysis extends earlier reports on the excitation and emission properties of rubidium in rare-gas hosts. We found that the doped crystals of krypton and xenon exhibit a simple absorption-emission relation, whereas rubidium in argon showed more complicated spectral structures. Our sample preparation employed in the present work yielded different results for the Ar crystal, but our peak positions were consistent with the prediction based on the linear extrapolation of Xe and Kr data. We also observed a bleaching behavior in rubidium excitation spectra, which suggests a population transfer from one to another spectral feature due to hole-burning. The observed optical response implies that rubidium in rare-gas thin-films is detectable with extremely high sensitivity, possibly down to a single atom level, in low concentration samples.

Abstract:In this work, we present the laser cleaning of a Rubidium vapor cell and the Raman analysis of the contaminant material to be removed. The optical window of the vapor cell had gradually lost transparency due to the development of an opaque layer of unknown composition at the inner side during the normal operation of the cell. Laser cleaning was successfully performed by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser focusing the beam inside the cell, avoiding any possible damage to the window. A single laser pulse was enough to clear away the black discoloration at the focal spot and locally restore the transparency of the window. The Raman spectra of the deposit showed peaks not yet described in the literature. Comparison with known Rubidium germanate spectra and simulation results strongly suggested that the unknown material was Rubidium silicate.

Measurement of DC and AC electric fields inside an atomic vapor cell with wall-integrated electrodes

Abstract:We present and characterize an atomic vapor cell with silicon ring electrodes directly embedded between borosilicate glass tubes. The cell is assembled with an anodic bonding method and is filled with Rb vapor. The ring electrodes can be externally connectorized for application of electric fields to the inside of the cell. An atom-based, all-optical, laser-spectroscopic field sensing method is employed to measure electric fields in the cell. Here, the Stark effect of electric-field-sensitive rubidium Rydberg atoms is exploited to measure DC electric fields in the cell of $\sim$5 V/cm, with a relative uncertainty of 10%. Measurement results are compared with DC field calculations, allowing us to quantify electric-field attenuation due to free surface charges inside the cell. We further measure the propagation of microwave fields into the cell, using Autler-Townes splitting of Rydberg levels as a field probe. Results are obtained for a range of microwave powers and polarization angles relative to the cell's ring electrodes. We compare the results with microwave-field calculations. Applications are discussed.

Abstract:We present evidence for Rydberg-Rydberg interaction in a gas of rubidium atoms above room temperature. Rabi oscillations on the nanosecond timescale to different Rydberg states are investigated in a vapor cell experiment. Analyzing the atomic time evolution and comparing to a dephasing model we find a scaling with the Rydberg quantum number n that is consistent with van der Waals interaction. Our results show that the interaction strength can be larger than the kinetic energy scale (Doppler width) which is the requirement for realization of thermal quantum devices in the GHz regime.

Exploring the vibrational series of pure trilobite Rydberg molecules

Abstract:We report on the observation of two vibrational series of pure trilobite rubidium Rydberg molecules. They are created via three-photon photoassociation and lie energetically more than 15 GHz below the atomic 22$F$ state of rubidium. In agreement with theoretical calculations, we find an almost perfect harmonic oscillator behavior of six vibrational states. We show that these states can be used to measure electron-atom scattering lengths for low energies in order to benchmark current theoretical calculations. The molecules have extreme properties: their dipole moments are in the range of kilo-Debye and the electronic wave function is made up of high angular momentum states with only little admixture from the nearby 22$F$ state. This high-$l$ character of the trilobite molecules leads to an enlarged lifetime as compared to the 22$F$ atomic state. The observation of an equidistant series of vibrational states opens an avenue to observe coherent molecular wave-packet dynamics.

Abstract:Spectroscopy of alkali-buffer gas mixtures at high pressures from single-digit to several 100 bars in the regime of substantial collisional broadening is relevant in a wide range of fields, ranging from collisional redistribution cooling to laboratory astrophysics. Here we report on spectroscopic measurements of dense rubidium-noble gas mixtures recorded in a pressure cell equipped with soldered sapphire optical viewports, which allows for the controlled realization of extreme conditions of high temperature and high pressure in a table top laboratory experiment. In the gas cell, we have recorded absorption and emission spectra of rubidium subject to 250 bar helium buffer gas pressure at 500 K temperature. The spectra to good accuracy fulfill the thermodynamic Kennard- Stepanov frequency scaling of the ratio of absorption and emission spectral profiles. Further, the long optical path length in the cell allowed to both record spectra of rubidium-argon mixtures at moderate temperatures and high pressures and to observe redistributional laser cooling in this system.

Abstract:We demonstrate lifetimes of atomic populations and coherences in excess of 60 seconds in alkali vapor cells with inner walls coated with an alkene material. This represents two orders of magnitude improvement over the best paraffin coatings. Such anti-relaxation properties will likely lead to substantial improvements in atomic clocks, magnetometers, quantum memory, and enable sensitive studies of collisional effects and precision measurements of fundamental symmetries.

Abstract:We investigate the architecture of microfabricated vapor cells with reflective sidewalls for applications in chip scale atomic sensors. The optical configuration in operation is suitable for both one-beam and two-beam (pump & probe) schemes. In the miniaturized vapor cells, the laser beam is reflected twice by the aluminum reflectors on the wet etched 54.7° sidewalls to prolong the optical length significantly, thus resulting in a return reflectance that is three times that of bare silicon sidewalls. To avoid limitations faced in the fabrication process, a simpler, more universal and less constrained fabrication process of microfabricated vapor cells for chip scale atomic sensors with uncompromised performance is implemented, which also decreases the fabrication costs and procedures. Characterization measurements show that with effective sidewall reflectors, mm3 level volume and feasible hermeticity, the elongated miniature vapor cells demonstrate a linear absorption contrast improvement by 10 times over the conventional micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) vapor cells at ~50 °C in the rubidium D1 absorption spectroscopy experiments. At the operating temperature of ~90 °C for chip scale atomic sensors, a 50% linear absorption contrast enhancement is obtained with the reflective cell architecture. This leads to a potential improvement in the clock stability and magnetometer sensitivity. Besides, the coherent population trapping spectroscopy is applied to characterize the microfabricated vacuum cells with 46.3 kHz linewidth in the through cell configuration, demonstrating the effectiveness in chip scale atomic sensors.

Abstract:We describe a simple strontium vapor cell for laser spectroscopy experiments. Strontium vapor is produced using an electrically heated commercial dispenser source. The sealed cell operates at room temperature, and without a buffer gas or vacuum pump. The cell was characterized using laser spectroscopy, and was found to offer stable and robust operation, with an estimated lifetime of >10 000 h. By changing the dispenser, this technique can be readily extended to other alkali and alkaline earth elements.

Abstract:Alkali vapor cells with antirelaxation coated walls can have long atomic coherence times. However, using such coated cells in the hyperfine configuration for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) requires longitudinal atomic motion to be confined to less than the hyperfine wavelength. We employed a narrow (1 mm) coated cell geometry to study hyperfine EIT and slow and stored light in warm R87b vapor, with results comparable to those in buffer gas cells and showing the promise of such cells for several applications.

In this study, a fast and efficient approach is developed to characterize relaxation properties of the inner surface of the 87Rb micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) vapor cell. Based on the zero-field level crossing effect, the transverse relaxation rate was experimentally determined, and the depolarization coefficient of 0.097 for atom-wall collisions in the 87Rb MEMS vapor cell was obtained. The experiments demonstrated that the alkali-wall collision relaxation gradually dominates the depolarization of the 87Rb ensemble as the radius of the vapor cell decreases. This research provides a quantitative method to evaluate the effectiveness of the MEMS vapor cell anti-relaxation coatings and offers the design inspiration for MEMS atomic vapor cells from the perspective of relaxation characterization. It is beneficial for the development of weak magnetic field detections such as biomagnetism detection in ambient environments.
