Abstract:We propose a time-delayed model for the study of active mode-locking that is valid for large values of the round-trip gain and losses. It allows us to access the typical regimes encountered in semiconductor lasers and to perform an extended bifurcation analysis. Close to the harmonic resonances and to the lasing threshold, we recover the Hermite-Gauss solutions. However, the presence of the linewidth enhancement factor induces complex regimes in which even the fundamental solution becomes unstable. Finally, we discover a global bifurcation scenario in which a single pulse can jump, over a slow time scale, between the different minima of the modulation potential.

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:The dynamics and stability of continuous-wave and multi-pulse structures are studied theoretically, for a generalized model of passively mode-locked fiber laser with an arbitrary nonlinearity. The model is characterized by a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with saturable nonlinearity of a general form ($I^m/(1+\Gamma I)^n$), where $I$ is the field intensity, $m$ and $n$ are two positive real numbers and $\Gamma$ is the optical field saturation power. The analysis of fixed-point solutions of the governing equations, reveals an interesting loci of singular points in the amplitude-frequency plane consisting of zero, one or two fixed points depending upon the values of $m$ and $n$. The stability of continuous waves is analyzed within the framework of the modulational-instability theory, results demonstrate a bifurcation in the continuous-wave amplitude growth rate and propagation constant characteristic of multi-periodic wave structures. In the full nonlinear regime these multi-periodic wave structures turn out to be multi-pulse trains, unveiled via numerical simulations of the model nonlinear equation the rich variety of which is highlighted by considering different combinations of values for the pair ($m$,$n$). Results are consistent with previous analyses of the dynamics of multi-pulse structures in several contexts of passively mode-locked lasers with saturable absorber, as well as with predictions about the existence of multi-pulse structures and bound-state solitons in optical fibers with strong optical nonlinearity such as cubic-quintic and saturable nonlinearities.

Abstract:We analyze the influence of spectrally modulated dispersion and loss on the stability of mode-locked oscillators. In the negative dispersion regime, a soliton oscillator can be stabilized in a close proximity to zero-dispersion wavelength, when spectral modulation of dispersion and loss are strong and weak, respectively. If the dispersion is close to zero but positive, we observe chaotic mode-locking or a stable coexistence of the pulse with the CW signal. The results are confirmed by experiments with a Cr:YAG oscillator.

Abstract:In this theoretical work, we introduce a nonlinear gain saturation law representative of the experimentally observed properties manifested by phenomena ranging from aeroacoustic shear layers in self-sustained cavity oscillations to flame heat release rate in thermoacoustic instabilities. Furthermore, this type of saturable gain may be relevant for a wider class of physical systems, such as active laser media in photonics. The nonlinearity discussed herein governs the fullscale behavior of a self-oscillator exhibiting linear loss under large amplitude perturbations, in contrast to the cubic damping and linear gain of the Van der Pol model. A distinctive characteristic of the proposed equation is the simple, well behaved gain term in the slow timescale dynamics.

Abstract:In research and engineering, short laser pulses are fundamental for metrology and communication. The generation of pulses by passive mode-locking is especially desirable due to the compact setup dimensions, without the need for active modulation requiring dedicated external circuitry. However, well-established models do not cover regular self-pulsing in gain media that recover faster than the cavity round trip time. For quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), this marked a significant limitation in their operation, as they exhibit picosecond gain dynamics associated with intersubband transitions. We present a model that gives detailed insights into the pulse dynamics of the first passively mode-locked QCL that was recently demonstrated. The presence of an incoherent saturable absorber, exemplarily realized by multilayer graphene distributed along the cavity, drives the laser into a pulsed state by exhibiting a similarly fast recovery time as the gain medium. This previously unstudied state of laser operation reveals a remarkable response of the gain medium on unevenly distributed intracavity intensity. We show that in presence of strong spatial hole burning in the laser gain medium, the pulse stabilizes itself by suppressing counter-propagating light and getting shortened again at the cavity facets. Finally, we study the robustness of passive mode-locking with respect to the saturable absorber properties and identify strategies for generating even shorter pulses. The obtained results may also have implications for other nanostructured mode-locked laser sources, for example, based on quantum dots.

Abstract:Harmonic mode-locking, realized actively or passively, is an effective technique for increasing the repetition rate of lasers, with important applications in optical sampling, laser micro-machining and frequency metrology. It is critically important to understand how a harmonically mode-locked pulse train responds to external perturbations and noise, so as to make sure that it is stable and resistant to noise. Here, in a series of carefully designed experiments, we elucidate the retiming dynamics of laser pulses generated in a soliton fiber laser harmonically mode-locked at ~2 GHz to the acoustic resonance in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) core. We characterize the self-driven optomechanical lattice along the PCF using a homodyne set-up, and reveal that each soliton undergoes damped oscillatory retiming within its trapping potential after an abrupt perturbation. In addition we show, through statistical analysis of the intra-cavity pulse spacing, how the trapping potentials are effective for suppressing timing jitter. The experimental results are well described using a dynamic model including dissipation, which provides valuable insight into the stability and noise performance of optomechanically mode-locked laser systems, and may also be useful for studying complex inter-soliton interactions.

Influence of noise-induced modulations on the timing stability of passively mode-locked semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback

Abstract:We show that passively mode-locked lasers subject to feedback from a single external cavity can exhibit large timing fluctuations on short time scales despite having a relatively small long-term timing jitter, meaning that the commonly used von Linde and Kéfélian techniques of experimentally estimating the timing jitter can lead to large errors in the estimation of the arrival time of pulses. We also show that adding a second feedback cavity of the appropriate length can significantly suppress noise-induced modulations that are present in the single feedback system. This reduces the short time scale fluctuations of the interspike interval time and at the same time improves the variance of the fluctuation of the pulse arrival times on long time scales.

Abstract:<p>Harmonic mode‐locking (HML) is an important technique enabling the generation of high‐repetition‐rate ultrashort pulses. Using an emerging time‐stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, the experimental observation of the entire buildup process of the passive HML state in an ultrafast fiber laser is reported here. It is unveiled that the whole process of HML buildup successively undergoes seven different ultrafast phases: raised relaxation oscillation, spectral beating behavior, birth of a giant pulse, self‐phase‐modulation‐induced instability, pulse splitting, repulsion and separation of multiple pulses, and a stable HML state. It is observed that the multiple HML pulses originate from a single‐pulse splitting phenomenon and a remarkable breathing behavior occurs at an early stage of the HML buildup process. The numerical results confirm that the effects of dispersive wave, gain depletion and recovery, and acoustic wave play key roles in the earlier, middle, and later stages of this HML buildup process, respectively; as well, the acoustic resonance in the single‐mode fiber stabilizes the final HML state of lasers.</p>

Abstract:We study the stability and interactions of chirped solitary pulses in a system of nonlinearly coupled cubic Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equations with a group-velocity mismatch between them, where each CGL equation is stabilized by linearly coupling it to an additional linear dissipative equation. In the context of nonlinear fiber optics, the model describes transmission and collisions of pulses at different wavelengths in a dual-core fiber, in which the active core is furnished with bandwidth-limited gain, while the other, passive (lossy) one is necessary for stabilization of the solitary pulses. Complete and incomplete collisions of pulses in two channels in the cases of anomalous and normal dispersion in the active core are analyzed by means of perturbation theory and direct numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that the model may readily support fully stable pulses whose collisions are quasi-elastic, provided that the group-velocity difference between the two channels exceeds a critical value. In the case of quasi-elastic collisions, the temporal shift of pulses, predicted by the analytical approach, is in semi-quantitative agrement with direct numerical results in the case of anomalous dispersion (in the opposite case, the perturbation theory does not apply). We also consider a simultaneous collision between pulses in three channels, concluding that this collision remains quasi-elastic, and the pulses remain completely stable. Thus, the model may be a starting point for the design of a stabilized wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) transmission system.

Abstract:We analyze the emergence of wiggling temporal localized states in a passively mode-locked Vertical External- Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser composed by a gain chip and a resonant saturable absorber mirror. We show that the wiggling instability stems from the interplay between the third-order dispersion induced by the micro-cavities and their frequency mismatch. The latter is identified as an experimentally crucial parameter defining the range of existence of stable emission. We reveal the homoclinic scenario underlying the wiggling phenomenon and we show how it allows to control the oscillation.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate multipulse regimes obtained within a passively-mode-locked fiber laser that includes a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer. By adjusting the time delay imbalance of the MZ, ultrashort pulse trains at multi-GHz repetition rates are generated. We compare the observed dynamics with high-harmonic mode locking, and show that the multi-GHz pulse trains display an inherent instability, which has been overlooked. By using a recirculation loop containing the MZ, we demonstrate a significant improvement of the pulse train stability.

Abstract:Abstract Interaction equations governing slow time evolution of the coordinates and phases of two interacting temporal cavity solitons in a delay differential equation model of a nonlinear mirror mode-locked laser are derived and analyzed. It is shown that non-local pulse interaction due to gain depletion and recovery can lead either to a development of harmonic mode-locking regime, or to a formation of closely packed incoherent soliton bound state with weakly oscillating intersoliton time separation. Local interaction via electric field tails can result in an anti-phase or in-phase stationary and breathing harmonic mode-locking regimes.

Abstract:The ubiquitous phenomenon of synchronization is inherently characteristic of dynamical dissipative non-linear systems. In particular, synchronization has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated for exciton-polariton condensates with time-independent coupling. Unlike that case, we theoretically investigate the effects of a fixed mechanical harmonic driving, i.e., a coherent phonon population, that induces time modulation in the coupling of two coupled condensates. Our model applies both to electrically generated modulation, through coherent bulk acoustic waves, and to self-induced optomechanical vibrations. We consider linear as well as quadratic phonon-displacement-induced modulations of the polariton coupling. Peculiar asynchronously locked phases are found and analyzed in the context of synchronization and Josephson-type oscillations phenomena that appear in the non-driven case. Notably, Arnold tongues corresponding to the asynchronously locked phases emerge at condensate detunings that correspond to integer numbers of the mechanical frequency and also to rational fractions of it. Unlocked quasiperiodic and chaotic regimes can also be reached. In particular, the phonon-induced fractional locking frequencies arrange in a Farey sequence that produces a devil's staircase of the steady-state dressed detuning between the condensates. Importantly, both polariton-polariton and reservoir-polariton interactions facilitate the realization of coherent phonon-induced asynchronously locked phases. The relation to recent experiments on optomechanically driven condensates in arrays of polariton traps is discussed.
