Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:The buildup dynamics from noise-seeded relaxation oscillation to harmonic mode-locking (HML) solitons generation have been well investigated in ultrafast fiber lasers. However, the transient multi-soliton dynamics in higher-order HML states are still attractive yet largely unexplored. We reveal here that, the experimental observation of the multi-soliton dynamics including soliton beating dynamics, soliton annihilation, transient bound state, two-soliton resonance state, soliton splitting, and multi-soliton repulsion dynamics are analyzed by the emerging time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique. Particularly, the excessive intracavity energy result in the double-pulse pulsating with transient bound states and three types of soliton molecules states can be observed in the earlier and middle part of the transition process. Numerical results further reveal that several similar multi-soliton dynamics operating at stable 2nd and 3rd states could be caused by a fine tuning of the pump power level in a hybrid mode-locked laser. Our results unveil a diverse set of ultrafast transient process in fiber lasers, and open up new ways into obtaining and controlling the generation of high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Harmonic mode-locking, realized actively or passively, is an effective technique for increasing the repetition rate of lasers, with important applications in optical sampling, laser micro-machining and frequency metrology. It is critically important to understand how a harmonically mode-locked pulse train responds to external perturbations and noise, so as to make sure that it is stable and resistant to noise. Here, in a series of carefully designed experiments, we elucidate the retiming dynamics of laser pulses generated in a soliton fiber laser harmonically mode-locked at ~2 GHz to the acoustic resonance in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) core. We characterize the self-driven optomechanical lattice along the PCF using a homodyne set-up, and reveal that each soliton undergoes damped oscillatory retiming within its trapping potential after an abrupt perturbation. In addition we show, through statistical analysis of the intra-cavity pulse spacing, how the trapping potentials are effective for suppressing timing jitter. The experimental results are well described using a dynamic model including dissipation, which provides valuable insight into the stability and noise performance of optomechanically mode-locked laser systems, and may also be useful for studying complex inter-soliton interactions.

Abstract:Real-time spectroscopy based on an emerging time-stretch technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, opening several fascinating explorations of nonlinear dynamics in mode-locked lasers. However, the self-starting process of mode-locked lasers is quite sensitive to environmental perturbation, which causes the transient behaviors of lasers to deviate from the true buildup process of solitons. We optimize the laser system to improve its stability, which suppresses the Q-switched lasing induced by environmental perturbation. We, therefore, demonstrate the first observation of the entire buildup process of solitons in a mode-locked laser, revealing two possible pathways to generate the temporal solitons. One pathway includes the dynamics of raised relaxation oscillation,quasimode-locking stage, spectral beating behavior, and finally the stable single-soliton mode-locking. The other pathway contains, however, an extra transient bound-state stage before the final single-pulse modelocking operation. Moreover, we propose a theoretical model to predict the buildup time of solitons, which agrees well with the experimental results. Our findings can bring real-time insights into ultrafast fiber laser design and optimization, as well as promote the application of fiber laser.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode locking is a nonlinear process of multimode soliton self-organization. Here the real-time buildup dynamics of the multiple solitons in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber laser are investigated, assisted by the time-stretch technique. We find that the buildup processes are transverse mode dependent, especially during the stages of relaxation oscillation and Q -switching prior to multiple soliton formation. Furthermore, we observe that the transverse modal composition of these generated pulses among the multiple solitons can be different from each other, indicating the spatiotemporal structure of the multiple soliton. A simplified theoretical model based on pulse energy evolution is put forward to interpret the role of 3D saturable absorber on spatiotemporal structures of spatiotemporal mode-locking multiple solitons. Our work has presented the spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics in multimode fiber lasers, which are novel to those inside the single transverse mode fiber lasers. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:<p>Harmonic mode‐locking (HML) is an important technique enabling the generation of high‐repetition‐rate ultrashort pulses. Using an emerging time‐stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, the experimental observation of the entire buildup process of the passive HML state in an ultrafast fiber laser is reported here. It is unveiled that the whole process of HML buildup successively undergoes seven different ultrafast phases: raised relaxation oscillation, spectral beating behavior, birth of a giant pulse, self‐phase‐modulation‐induced instability, pulse splitting, repulsion and separation of multiple pulses, and a stable HML state. It is observed that the multiple HML pulses originate from a single‐pulse splitting phenomenon and a remarkable breathing behavior occurs at an early stage of the HML buildup process. The numerical results confirm that the effects of dispersive wave, gain depletion and recovery, and acoustic wave play key roles in the earlier, middle, and later stages of this HML buildup process, respectively; as well, the acoustic resonance in the single‐mode fiber stabilizes the final HML state of lasers.</p>

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the transition dynamics between 2nd and 3rd harmonic mode-locking states using the dispersive Fourier transform technology in a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser. Keeping the pump power unchanged and adjusting polarization controller to change intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the spectral filtering effect, a set of soliton dynamics induced by soliton interaction are revealed before the soliton splitting. Solitons undergo similar oscillation behaviors during the reverse decay process of the harmonic mode-locking order until one of the solitons disappears. In these transient dynamics, a significant wavelength shift phenomenon could be observed in the transition process of harmonic orders. The numerical results further show that intracavity spectral filtering effects play key role in the harmonic order transition dynamics process, consistent with experimental results. It provides new insights into the evolution and dynamics behavior in harmonic mode-locked soliton order conversion and its potential applications.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of passive harmonic mode locking of bunches of single-pulse solitons or twin-pulse solitons in an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser. Experimental investigations on the phenomenon revealed that, although the soliton interaction between the adjacent single-/twin-pulse solitons in a bunch is weaker than that of the pulse interaction in the twin-pulse solitons, a soliton bunch could also function as a unit and form the state of passively harmonic mode-locking. Harmonic mode-locking is one of the intrinsic characteristics of soliton emission in passively mode-locked fiber ring lasers. It can be formed based on the single-pulse soliton, twin-pulse soliton, or bunch of solitons.

Abstract:A new category of harmonic mode-locked pattern is reported in passively mode-locked fiber laser (MLFL). The laser base on gold nanorods (GNRs) as a mechanism to trigger mode locking. By adjusting polarization controllers and pumping power, including fundamental mode-locked pulse, condensed soliton phase, soliton rain, harmonic condensed soliton phase have been observed. The harmonics condensed soliton phase were experimentally verified for the first time in the MLFL. The experimental results explained the conditions for the generation of condensed soliton phase and extend the pulse type of harmonic mode-locking (HML).

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber laser as a dissipative nonlinear system is capable of generating various dynamical soliton molecules, providing an abundant platform for investigating the transient soliton dynamics. Here, we report on the real-time internal motions of harmonically mode-locked soliton molecules (HMLSMs) in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Assisted with time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform (DFT), various real-time scenarios towards multi-pulse states are revealed. Particularly, both the stationary and evolving HMLSMs are respectively observed, indicating that each soliton molecule in one roundtrip possesses identical intra-molecular motions. These vivid internal motions are mainly dominated by the underlying interactions and energy flow between the adjacent constituents. All these findings provide an intriguing perspective in dynamical intra-molecular evolution of ultrafast nonlinear phenomena and further enrich the research of fundamental science.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers, which have been widely utilized to generate ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond level, can be regarded as the next-generation laser source due to the advantages of high beam quality, high efficiency, etc. On the other hand, ultrafast mode-locking fiber lasers can provide an excellent platform for observing a variety of nonlinear dynamics. Although some steady state phenomena had been observed theoretically and experimentally, many interesting and important transient dynamics properties can only be theoretically predicted, and some are unpredictable. The main reason is that these ultrafast nonlinear dynamics are unrepeatable and have complex transformation in temporal and spectral domain, which cannot be resolved by the current technologies. In recent years, researchers have proposed time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique [1]-[6] to measure the transient, nonrepeat events. This technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, thus provide an elegant way to obtain real-time, single-shot spectrum measurements of ultrafast optical phenomena. Up to now, this technique has helped scientists to experimentally resolve the entire formation dynamics [2], [3] and localized transient dynamics of solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers [4]-[6]. Besides, a temporal magnifier technique, also known as time lens, was employed to microimaging the ultrafast phenomena in recent years. This technique has been successfully applied to study the real-time full-field characterization of soliton dynamics in mode-locked laser [7], [8].

Abstract:Optimization of self-starting in passively mode-locked optical soliton fiber laser resonators results from a complex transient dynamic involving soliton molecules, soliton-based complexes and supramolecular structures, with particle-like properties. By means of time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform based real-time spectroscopy, we identify a new route to the passive mode-locking of fiber laser solitons. A raised relaxation oscillation stage is followed by the generation of shaking-soliton molecular triplets. The relative phase between satellite and main pulses of shaking soliton triplets evolves chaotically, while the two satellite pulses are orthogonal to each other in their state of polarization. These results provide new perspectives into the soliton formation and the internal dynamics of soliton molecules with higher degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Soliton explosion and soliton pulsation are among the most intriguing nonlinear dynamics in dissipative systems. In this paper, we construct an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Up to five nonlinear regimes are observed successively in our device by adjusting two intra-cavity polarization controllers, including stable dissipation solitons, noise-like pulses (NLPs), soliton explosion, soliton pulsation and Q-switched mode-locked (QSML) state. Benefiting from the dispersive Fourier transform (DFT) method, we capture the real-time spectra evolution of those nonlinear dynamics, which can help researcher to better understand different soliton dynamics. Our work will enhance a more comprehensive understanding of nonlinear phenomenon in dissipative systems.
Observation of diverse passive harmonic mode-locked soliton pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser

Abstract:Diverse passive harmonic mode-locking were observed in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped passively mode-locked fiber laser with a long cavity based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Using a cascaded long-period fiber grating as a spectral filter, several modes of passively harmonic mode-locking including passive high-order harmonic mode-locking, passive multiple-pulse harmonic mode locking and passive large-pulse-width harmonic mode locking (over 300 ns ) were obtained by adjusting the tunable CW semiconductor laser (pumping source in the experiment) and polarization controller, in which the intense nonlinear effects, large fiber dispersion and phase bias played an important role. It is expected that the observed various modes of passive harmonic mode-locking may find applications in industrial fields where different pulse widths and repetition rates are needed and provide experimental evidence to the research of ultrafast lasers.
