Engineering Failure Analysis
Abstract:Statistics from explosion incidents indicate that the primary cause of casualties in such events is often flying glass fragments, frequently accompanied by fires. This study investigates the damage mechanisms of glass under the combined effects of explosions and high temperatures, examining its dynamic response to blast loads. We simulate the dynamic response of glass under blast impact at both ambient and high temperatures using the peridynamics (PD) algorithm. The results show that the glass edges experience the highest stress, leading to the initial formation of cracks in these areas under various conditions. Additionally, increased stress causes more pulverization of fragments at the edge. Comparative analysis of the crack initiation process under different conditions reveals significant behavioral differences in glass with varying load-resistance capabilities when exposed to impact loads. At high temperatures, crack development is predominantly influenced by the impact load, diminishing the effect of stress transfer on the expansion of glass cracks. The findings of this research provide theoretical insights into the destructive mechanisms of glass under the combined influence of explosions and high temperatures, contributing to the design of blast-resistant glass.
