Abstract:Fluorescence thermometry manifests tremendous attention for their potential applications in the temperature sensing, especially for combining wide operating temperature range with high sensitivity. However, the use of thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) for temperature measurement has strict requirements for energy difference, which limits the sensitivity of detection. In order to satisfy higher sensitivity sensing, the pair of non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs) of 4S3/2 and 3H4 has been innovatively designed. Herein, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm co-doped LuScO3 single crystal fibers (SCFs) had been delicately grown by Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Abstract:Fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometers have obtained great attention in industrial production, medical diagnosis and scientific research. However, the sensitivity has a large decline at high temperatures, which seriously limits the practical applications. Here, the Yb,Er,Tm:Sc2O3 single crystal fibers were grown by laser-heated pedestal growth (LHPG) technique and its multi-mode FIR thermometry based on thermal coupled energy levels (TCLs) and non-thermal coupled energy levels (NTCLs) has been well demonstrated. The temperature measuring range of Yb,Er,Tm:Sc2O3 single crystal fibers covers 298-973 K, with an increase of 2 orders of magnitude in absolute sensitivity. The relative sensitivity is higher than 0.02 % K-1 in the whole T-range of 298 similar to 973 K, with a maximum value of 1.02 % K-1. Especially at the high temperatures of 973 K, it can still maintain 0.31 % K-1. This work proposes an innovative fluorescence intensity ratio detection strategy to achieve complementary disadvantages between TCLs and NTCLs and provides an effective method for improving detection sensitivity.
Temperature sensitivity based on Er3+ fluorescence fluctuation in Gd2Ti2O7: Er3+-Yb3+ porous nanofibers

Abstract:(Gd1−x−yErxYby)2Ti2O7 (GTOEY) fibers were synthesized by electrospinning technique and heat-treatment processes, in which nano-scale fibers vested with homogeneous porous morphology, high crystallinity and elevated temperature heat-resistance. Under 977 nm laser excitation, GTOEY nanofibers exhibit effective frequency upconversion (UC) fluorescence, therefore, the violent green and dimmed red UC emissions are identified as two-photon absorption processes, attributing to 2H11/2/4S3/2 → 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 radiation transitions of Er3+, respectively. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity based on UC emission fluctuation of Er3+ over a wide temperature range of 303–633 K has been derived. Thereby, having used a 980 nm laser and achieved green UC luminescence of GTOEY fibers centered at 525 and 545 nm, the maximum absolute and relative sensitivity values are obtained to be 0.382% K−1 and 1.12% K−1, respectively. These significant results demonstrate that the GTOEY nanofibers with distinct porous structure and admirable photothermal sensitivities can be regarded as a promising temperature sensing material used for overheating alarm and safety protection equipment.

Abstract:This work provides a new material, Li+-doped erbium ytterbium silicate, with reliable and high temperature sensing sensitivity for optical thermometers. The Li+-doped erbium ytterbium silicate films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. The film shows strong green visible emission, which is related to the radiation transitions from thermally coupled energy levels 2H11/2, 4S3/2 to 4I15/2. Lithium doping reduces the field symmetry around erbium and improves the radiation transition efficiency, and Yb doping improves the pump light absorption. Lithium or ytterbium is advantageous to enhance up-conversion luminescence and temperature sensing sensitivity of erbium ions. Therefore, the temperature dependence of green up-conversion luminescence in the range of 80-460K of the Li+-doped erbium ytterbium silicate films have been found to be a promising optical thermometer material with a high relative sensitivity of 16.9% K-1, which is higher than the optimum value of other Er3+ materials. In addition, we have provided a preliminary temperature measurement scheme based on the Li+-doped erbium ytterbium silicate film.

Abstract:Er3+–Yb3+–Mo6+ co-doped TiO2/Yb2Ti2O7 up-conversion luminescent nanofibers have been successfully synthesized using the electrospinning technology followed by thermolysis. The effects of the precursor ratio and annealing process on up-conversion luminescent character were investigated. The phase of TiO2 was determined to be either anatase or rutile. And the cubic Yb2Ti2O7 in Er3+–Yb3+–Mo6+ co-doped TiO2 phosphor was confirmed. After annealing at high temperature, the up-conversion luminescent intensity of the studied system increased obviously. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) used to be made on the basis of green up-conversion emissions. It was studied as a function of temperature. The maximum rate of sensitivity was ~0.01 K−1 in the range of 300–600 K. The results indicate that Er3+–Yb3+–Mo6+ co-doped TiO2/Yb2Ti2O7 phosphor is a brand-new material that meets the requirement of the optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:To settle the challenges of both excellent luminescent property and high sensitivity for optical thermometry, a series of Y 2 Mo 3 O 12 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ submicron particles with different Yb 3+ contents were prepared via a citric-assisted sol–gel technique. Under 980 nm excitation, the samples exhibit characteristic emissions ascribed to the transitions of 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 levels to the ground state of Er 3+ ion. The Stark splitting of 4 S 3/2 and 2 H 11/2 is observed. According to the emission spectra, the optimal doping concentration of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ is concluded to be 15 mol% and 1 mol%, respectively. Then, the temperature-dependent luminescent behavior of Y 2 Mo 3 O 12 : 15%Yb 3+ , 1%Er 3+ sample was further investigated, which exhibits good temperature stability with a slight decrease as temperature rises. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, the maximal absolute sensitivity S A of 0.0243 K −1 and relative sensitivity S R of 1.161%K −1 were achieved using the Stark sub-levels ( I H / I S2 ), which are 1.75 and 1.07 folds than that of the traditional thermal-coupled levels ( I H / I S1+S2 ) of Er 3+ ion. The results show that the Stark sub-levels can be utilized as an effect strategy to improve thermometry sensitivity and Y 2 Mo 3 O 12 : Yb 3+ , Er 3+ phosphor could be considered as a promising temperature sensing material.

Abstract:Er3+ and Li+ codoped Y2O3 nanocrystals has been prepared by sol-gel method. Upconversion spectrum and properties of Er3+ has been studied under excitation at 976 nm. Fluorescence intensity ratio of 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 subband levels in the Er3+ and Li+ codoped Y2O 3 nanocrystals have been studied as a function of temperature. In the temperature range of 295-723 K, the I525nm/I561nm has the highest thermal sensitivity the maximum sensitivity is approximately 0.016 K-1. The Y2O3: Er3+/Li+nanocrystals with high fluorescence efficiency and the higher temperature revolution, indicated that it is promising for applications in optical high temperature sensor.

Abstract:Na(Y1−x−yErxYby)F4/PAN (NYF-EY/PAN) composite fibers have been successfully fabricated by electrospinning method, and sub-micron embedded crystals in the fibers have presented complete hexagonal structure and thermal reaction function. Effective green up-conversion (UC) fluorescence that originated from flexible fibers can be adapted to microdomain non-contact temperature measurement, complying temperature acquisition for complex geometry and active biological tissue without destroying the temperature field. The maximum absolute sensitivity and the maximum relative sensitivity are 0.00446 K−1 at 423 K and 1.148% K−1 at 303 K, respectively. Composite fibers in which crystallites embedded have superior performances of greater stability and higher sensitivity, are served as micron scale special temperature sensor.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO composite nanofibers have been prepared using the electrospinning method. A phase transfer process from α to β of NaYF4 occurred after calcination treatment, which provided a simple and effective way to enhance the upconversion luminescence of the nanosized NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+. The up-conversion emission intensity of the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO composite nanofibers increased with an increase in the sintering temperature. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, based on the green up-conversion emissions of the NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO composite nanofibers, has been studied as a function of temperature. In the temperature range of 300–650K, the maximum sensitivity and temperature resolution is approximately 0.0049K−1 and 0.3K, respectively, which indicates that NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/ZnO is a promising material for applications in optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:Variations of fluorescence intensity ratio of green (generated from Er3+ 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels) and red (generated from the sublevels of Er3+ 4F9/2 level) upconversion emissions in Er3+/Yb3+/Li+:ZrO2 nanocrystals have been studied as a function of temperature under 976nm laser diode excitation. In the temperature range of 323–673K, the maximum sensitivities of about 0.0134K−1 and 0.0104K−1 are obtained by using green and red emission, respectively. Er3+/Yb3+/Li+:ZrO2 nanocrystals show potential application value in nanoscale thermal sensor.

Abstract:Environment-friendly potassium sodium niobate-based ferroelectrics have been widely and deeply studied for their electrical properties, but there remains much potential for applications in other fields, one of which is in optical temperature sensing. Herein, a host (K,Na)Li0.04NbO3:0.5 mol% Er material with an orthogonal-tetragonal phase transition was constructed by Li+ regulation and then increased Yb2O3 codoping used to promote the occurrence of orthogonal to tetragonal and tetragonal to pseudocubic phase transitions. Interestingly, codoping with Yb2O3 as a sensitizer and phase structural changes regulated the resulting materials' luminescent characteristics and greatly enhanced luminescence intensity and temperature sensing properties, compared with those of merely Er3+-doped samples. In addition, strong green and red light emissions were related to the large absorption cross-section of Yb3+ near 980 nm, which transferred more energy to Er3+. In particular, significantly enhanced red light, or red shift, was associated with energy back transfer at high Yb3+ concentrations. Furthermore, the optimal ceramic was (K, Na)Li0.04NbO3:0.5 mol % Er/2.5 mol % Yb (KNL0.04N:0.5 Er/2.5 Yb), and its maximum absolute and relative sensitivity of 0.0112 and 0.0173 K-1, respectively, which were higher than those of other reports. These results showed that KNL0.04N:0.5Er/2.5Yb lead-free ceramic possessed the potential to be an excellent optical temperature sensor with high intensity and sensitivity.

Abstract:Oxides are physical and chemical stable. Non-contact thermometer—Yb3+-Er3+ ions co-doped solid solution (Y0.5In0.5)2O3, is prepared by regular solid method. The structure result indicates that a pure phase solid solution (Y0.5In0.5)2O3 has been obtained by XRD. The solid solution (Y0.5In0.5)2O3 has a similar crystal structure, especially Y2O3 and In2O3 with the similar space group (Ia3 @#x0305;). Green emission from 500 to 600 nm is Er3+ 4f-4f transitions: 4S3/2→4I15/2 at 567 nm and 2H11/2→4I15/2 at 528 nm. Red emissions from 630 to 720 nm are attributed to Er3+: 4F9/2→4I15/2. UC luminescence is changing greatly with laser diode power and Er3+ and Yb3+ content. Furthermore, two-photon process is confirmed to be dominated between Yb3+ and Er3+ in oxide solid solution (Y0.5In0.5)2O3. Optical temperature sensitivity is also investigated systematically in order to explore the application for the oxide solid solution (Y0.5In0.5)2O3. The temperature-dependent green fluorescence at 528 and 567 nm was investigated with the range of 313-573 K. 3.1610-3 K-1 is the maximum absolute sensitivity at 503 K, higher than most Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped systems. In addition, the solid solution (Y0.5In0.5)2O3: Yb3+, Er3+ has better thermal stable property and stronger UC emission than the simple substance with excellent temperature sensing performance. It indicates that Yb3+-Er3+ ions co-doped (Y0.5In0.5)2O3 solid solution is a good candidate as optical temperature sensor.

Abstract:Optical thermometry technology plays a significant role in plenty of fields owing to its unrivaled properties such as sensitive, noncontact, reliable and so on. In this work, Er3+/Yb3+ codoped lanthanum titanate (La2Ti2O7) microcrystals have been synthesized by solid state reaction for optical thermometry. This novel prepared material for thermometry is based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of thermally coupled levels from upconversion emission under 980 nm excitation. The sensitivity of thermometry is 5.7 × 10−3 K−1, and the input power density is only 8.3 mW/mm2. Furthermore, the result of repeatability test illustrates that the as-prepared microcrystals possess excellent stability at the temperature range from 333 to 553 K. Therefore, these demonstrated advantages of Er3+/Yb3+ codoped La2Ti2O7 microcrystals make it a promising material in optical thermometry area.

Abstract:An optical temperature sensor based on infrared-to-visible upconversion emission in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Bi3TiNbO9 (BTN) ceramics is reported. The fluorescence intensity ratio of the green upconversion photoluminescence (UC-PL) around 524 nm and 545 nm depends on temperature. The operating temperature range and the maximum sensitivity of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Bi3TiNbO9 ceramics are 123-693k and 0.0032K(-1), respectively. BTN:Er3+/Yb3+ ceramic has good thermal, physical and chemical stability, great UC-PL intensity and low cost fabrication. The results imply that Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Bi3TiNbO9 ceramic is promising for applications in wide-temperature-range sensors.
Thermally Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence of Cr3+ in Er3+-Yb3+-Cr3+ Tri-Doped Garnet Phosphors for Sensitive Optical Thermometry

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry is strongly desired in many fields due to the capability of remote temperature measurement with fast response and high spatial resolution. For developing excellent luminescence thermom-eter, we systematically investigated the upconversion (UC) emissions from Er3+-Yb3+-Cr3+ tri-doped garnet -structured phosphors under the excitation of 980 nm laser. The influence of Ga3+/Al3+ dopant ratio in Y3Al5-xGaxO12 on the UC luminescence was studied in detail by the X-ray diffraction patterns, Raman spectra, FT-IR spectra and Judd-Ofelt theory. Research revealed that the increase of Ga3+ doping content could reduce the symmetry of rare earth (RE) ions site and simultaneously weaken the nonradiative relaxations, favoring the RE luminescence and the subsequent energy transfer (ET) from RE to Cr3+. More importantly, because of the thermally strengthened ET from Er3+ ions, about 27-fold enhancement in Cr3+ UC luminescence was successfully achieved within Er3+-Yb3+-Cr3+ tri-doped Y3Ga5O12 as temperature ascended from 303 to 873 K, which consequently leaded to the emission color switching in response to temperature change. These advances in the as-prepared garnet phosphors provide potential opportunity for vision-guided temperature sensing with high sensitivity (-4.38% K 1) and low measurement uncertainty (-0.29 K).

Abstract:Luminescent nanocomposite of epoxy filled with Er3+-doped yttria-stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) is prepared with their luminescence spectra measured in the temperature range 123–423K. Fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the two Er3+ emissions is also obtained in the same temperature range. Er–7YSZ/epoxy nanocomposites exhibited higher sensitivity of 0.18%/K as compared with the bare Er–7YSZ particles. Luminescence thermometry is demonstrated by using the nanocomposites as temperature sensitive paint (TSP) with a resolution of 1K. The advantage of FIR technique combined with the excellent thermal stability of epoxy matrix makes the Er–7YSZ/epoxy nanocomposites viable as temperature sensitive paint for aerodynamic applications.
