Abstract:Reading promotion is a key service of the public library. This article investigates the current state of reading promotion in public libraries in China. There were 86 public libraries chosen as a sample. The research finds that Chinese libraries have been paying more and more attention to the importance of reading promotion. A variety of reading promotion services and programs are being carried out, including reading festivals, booklists, reading contests, reading communication and lectures on reading. Public libraries tend to apply more towards the digital platform when promoting reading. Public libraries have cooperated with NGO and business fields to promote reading. This study suggests more can be done to improve the service, including improving the librarian's knowledge of genre books, enhancing reading communication, deeply investigating measurement of reading promotion, and the influence of contracting out reading programs.

Abstract:To solve various contradictions and problems in rural development and agricultural progress and to increase farmers' income, emphasis should be put on the improvement of farmers' competence. The educational authorities in Jiang shan City of Zhejiang Province has brought into full play the role of the literacy and technical schools in rural areas for offering education to farmers. It is the valuable experience of the rural adult education in Jiangshan City to break the traditional regulations and provide farmers with the innovative teaching contents to meet farmers' practical and urgent needs. Jiangshan City's successful experience should be popularized in other places for promoting the expansion of educational training in rural areas and display the role of educational training for increasing farmers' income.

Abstract:At present, there are still some problems in reading promotion for college students, such as inadequate precision of the supporting theory, inaccurate orientation of the reading promotion target, and lack of cultural connotation. The concept of college-specific reading emphasizes that colleges shall make differentiated reading promotion activities according to the scope of disciplines, the level of management, colleges' mottos, their history, and the cities where the colleges are located. It considers macroscopically the need of reader groups in different types of colleges, and combines the ideas of "One College One Book" and "One City One Book" to further improve the fineness and accuracy of reading promotion to college students.

Abstract:Abstract: In order to better improve the reading ability of rural students and promote the development of junior high school English in rural areas, this paper describes the importance of graded reading in English teaching in rural areas, and tries to analyze the problems and deficiencies in junior high school English reading teaching from the perspectives of students, teachers and society. The main problems are that rural students lack a correct understanding of English learning, teachers lack graded reading teaching skills, and the teaching facilities in rural schools are poor. Based on this, this paper suggests that students should change their perceptions of English learning psychologically, teachers should master the skills of English graded reading and schools should provide a good English reading environment. This study finds that in rural English reading teaching, teachers need to take into account the cognitive ability of rural middle school students, the awareness of multi-level reading teaching and the teaching facilities of rural middle school. On the basis of teachers􀆳 awareness of multi-level reading teaching, reading materials suitable for students􀆳 multi-level reading are selected and the existing teaching reading materials and teaching facilities are used to pay attention to students􀆳 subjective initiative in class and extracurricular reading and stimulate students􀆳 interest in reading, so as to promote the gradual improvement of students􀆳 reading ability.

Abstract:Parent-child reading plays an important role in the development of children’s reading ability. From the perspective of sociocultural theory, the formation and development mechanism of parent-child reading community are studied, and cultural practice and identity transformation are considered as the core components. Parent-child reading promotion strategies in the U.K. and the U.S. are studied to explore the practical dimension construction of parent-child reading community. It is believed that strategies includes unified planning of stage and continuity, coordinated evolution of content and motivation dimension, efficient promotion of procedural rules, reducing parent-child identity transformation barriers, and avoiding the interruption of children’s reading ability development, which provides inspiration and experience for parent-child reading promotion in China.

Abstract:Independent reading-unassigned reading for personal pleasure-has been shown to be an important driver of reading skills and academic success. Children that commonly read for pleasure exhibit higher academic performance. However, little research has been done on independent reading in rural China, where the education system is charged with schooling tens of millions of students. Many rural students fall behind their urban counterparts in school, with potentially troubling implications for China's ongoing development. This article explores the prevalence of independent reading and its associations with reading ability and academic performance among rural students. Using a mixed methods approach, we analyze quantitative data from a survey of 13,232 students from 134 rural schools and interviews with students, teachers, principals, and caregivers. We find that independent reading is positively and significantly correlated with reading ability as well as standardized math and Chinese tests scores. Despite such correlations, only 17 percent of students report reading for pleasure for an hour a day. Interview findings suggest that inaccessible bookstores, curriculum constraints, unsupportive home environments, low availability of appealing and level-appropriate books, and insufficient school investment in reading resources may explain the low prevalence of independent reading.

Abstract:This paper aims to explore and quantify the reading achievement of primary school students from three different regions in rural China. Using survey data on 23,143 students from Shaanxi, Guizhou, and Jiangxi provinces, we find although gaps in student reading achievement exist among the three sample provinces, all sample students exhibit low levels of reading achievement. Compared to students from other countries that participated in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study reading tests, our sample students from rural China ranked last. Our regression analysis documented strong correlations between reading achievement and maths performance exist among the sample students in rural China. Additionally, we find male students, students with rural household registration, boarding students, and students from relatively poor families are more susceptible to having worse reading outcomes. Overall, our findings indicate the government should develop more effective policies to support reading skill development in China, especially in rural areas.
