Abstract:We consider discrete Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ with bounded random but not necessarily identically distributed values of the potential. We prove spectral localization (with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions) as well as dynamical localization for this model. An important ingredient of the proof is a non-stationary version of the parametric Furstenberg Theorem on random matrix products, which is also of independent interest.

Abstract:We establish large sets of Anderson localized states for the quasi-periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb Z^d$, thus extending Anderson localization from the linear (cf. Bourgain [GAFA 17(3), 682--706, 2007]) to a nonlinear setting, and the random (cf. Bourgain-Wang [JEMS 10(1), 1--45, 2008]) to a deterministic setting. Among the main ingredients are a new Diophantine estimate of quasi-periodic functions in arbitrarily dimensional phase space, and the application of Bourgain's geometric lemma in [GAFA 17(3), 682--706, 2007].

Abstract:We prove long time Anderson localization for the nonlinear random Schrödinger equation for arbitrary ℓ 2 initial data, hence giving an answer to a widely debated question in the physics community. The proof uses a Birkhoff normal form type transform to create a barrier where there is essentially no propagation. One of the new features is that this transform is in a small neighborhood enabling us to treat “rough” data, where there are no moment conditions. The formulation of the present result is inspired by the RAGE theorem.

Abstract:For the almost Mathieu operator $(H_{\lambda,\alpha,\theta}u)_n=u_{n+1}+u_{n-1}+2\lambda \cos2\pi(\theta+n\alpha)u_n$, Avila and Jitomirskaya guess that for a.e. $\theta$, $H_{\lambda,\alpha,\theta}$ satisfies Anderson localization if $ |\lambda| > e^{ \beta} $, and they establish this for $ |\lambda| > e^{\frac{16}{9} \beta}$. In the present paper, we extend their result to regime $ |\lambda| > e^{\frac{3}{2} \beta}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove pure point spectrum for a large class of Schrödinger operators over circle maps with conditions on the rotation number going beyond the Diophantine. More specifically, we develop the scheme to obtain pure point spectrum for Schrödinger operators with monotone bi-Lipschitz potentials over orientation-preserving circle homeomorphisms with Diophantine or weakly Liouville rotation number. The localization is uniform when the coupling constant is large enough.

Abstract:Proofs of localization for random Schrödinger operators with sufficiently regular distribution of the potential can take advantage of the fractional moment method introduced by Aizenman-Molchanov, or use the classical Wegner estimate as part of another method, e.g. the multi-scale analysis introduced by Fröhlich-Spencer and significantly developed by Klein and his collaborators. When the potential distribution is singular, most proofs rely crucially on exponential estimates of events corresponding to finite truncations of the operator in question; these estimates in some sense substitute for the classical Wegner estimate. We introduce a method to "lift" such estimates, which have been obtained for many stationary models, to certain closely related non-stationary models. As an application, we use this method to derive Anderson localization on the 1-D lattice for certain non-stationary potentials along the lines of the non-perturbative approach developed by Jitomirskaya-Zhu in 2019.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the large deviation estimates and Anderson localization for CMV matrices on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}_+)$ with Verblunsky coefficients defined dynamically by the hyperbolic toral automorphism. Part of positivity results on the Lyapunov exponents of Chulaevsky-Spencer and Anderson localization results of Bourgain-Schlag on Schrödinger operators with strongly mixing potentials are extended to CMV matrices.

Abstract:We consider a one-frequency, quasi-periodic, block Jacobi operator, whose blocks are generic matrix-valued analytic functions. We establish Anderson localization for this type of operator under the assumption that the coupling constant is large enough but independent of the frequency. This generalizes a result of J. Bourgain and S. Jitomirskaya on localization for band lattice, quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators.

Abstract:We consider a Hamiltonian given by the Laplacian plus a Bernoulli potential on the two dimensional lattice. We prove that, for energies sufficiently close to the edge of the spectrum, the resolvent on a large square is likely to decay exponentially. This implies almost sure Anderson localization for energies sufficiently close to the edge of the spectrum. Our proof follows the program of Bourgain–Kenig, using a new unique continuation result inspired by a Liouville theorem of Buhovsky–Logunov–Malinnikova–Sodin.
