Abstract:We consider a one-frequency, quasi-periodic, block Jacobi operator, whose blocks are generic matrix-valued analytic functions. We establish Anderson localization for this type of operator under the assumption that the coupling constant is large enough but independent of the frequency. This generalizes a result of J. Bourgain and S. Jitomirskaya on localization for band lattice, quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators.

Abstract:We prove non-perturbative Anderson localization for quasi-periodic Jacobi block matrix operators assuming non-vanishing of all Lyapunov exponents. The base dynamics on tori $\mathbb{T}^b$ is assumed to be a Diophantine rotation. Results on arithmetic localization are obtained for $b=1$, and applications to the skew shift, stacked graphene, XY spin chains, and coupled Harper models are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we use recent breakthroughs in the study of coupled subwavelength resonator systems to reveal new insight into the mechanisms responsible for the fundamental features of Anderson localization. The occurrence strong localization in random media has proved difficult to understand, particularly in physically derived multi-dimensional models and systems with long-range interactions. We show here that the scattering of time-harmonic waves by high-contrast resonators with randomly chosen material parameters reproduces the characteristic features of Anderson localization. In particular, we show that the hybridization of subwavelength resonant modes is responsible for both the repulsion of energy levels as well as the widely observed phase transition, at which point eigenmode symmetries swap and very strong localization is possible. We derive results from first principles, using asymptotic expansions in terms of the material contrast parameter and obtain a characterization of the localized modes in terms of generalized capacitance matrices. This model captures the long-range interactions of the wave-scattering system and provides a concise framework to explain the exotic phenomena that are observed.

Abstract:We address the properties of wavepacket localization-delocalization transition (LDT) in fractional dimensions with a quasi-periodic lattice. The LDT point, which is generally determined by the competition between two sub-lattices comprising the quasi-periodic lattice, turns out to be inversely proportional to the Lévy index. Surprisingly, we find that, in the presence of weak structural disorder, anti-Anderson localization occurs, i.e., the introduced disorder results in an increasing of the size of the linear modes. Inclusion of a weak focusing nonlinearity is shown to improve localization. The propagation simulation achieves excellent agreement with the linear and nonlinear eigenmode analysis.

Abstract:Uncorrelated disorder potential in one-dimensional lattice definitely induces Anderson localization, while quasiperiodic potential can lead to both localized and extended phases, depending on the potential strength. We investigate the Anderson localization in one-dimensional lattice with nonHermitian complex disorder and quasiperiodic potential. We present a non-Hermitian SSH chain to demonstrate that a nonzero imaginary disorder on-site potential can induce the standard Anderson localization. We also show that the non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre (AA) model exhibits a transition in parameter space, which separates the localization and delocalization phases and is determined by the self-duality of the model. It indicates that a pure imaginary quasiperiodic potential takes the same role as a real quasiperiodic potential in the transition point between localization and delocalization. Remarkably, a system with complex quasiperiodic potential exhibits interference-like pattern on the transition points.

Bourgain [GAFA 17(3), 682--706, 2007]) to a nonlinear setting, and the random (cf. Bourgain-Wang [JEMS 10(1), 1--45, 2008]) to a deterministic setting. Among the main ingredients are a new Diophantine estimate of quasi-periodic functions in arbitrarily dimensional phase space, and the application of Bourgain's geometric lemma in [GAFA 17(3), 682--706, 2007].

Uniform Anderson Localization in One-Dimensional Floquet Maps

Abstract:We study Anderson localization in a discrete-time quantum map dynamics in one dimension with nearest-neighbor hopping strength $\theta$ and quasienergies located on the unit circle. We demonstrate that strong disorder in a local phase field yields a uniform spectrum gaplessly occupying the entire unit circle. The resulting eigenstates are exponentially localized. Remarkably this Anderson localization is universal as all eigenstates have one and the same localization length $L_{loc}$. We present an exact theory for the calculation of the localization length as a function of the hopping, $1/L_\text{loc}=\left|\ln\left(|\sin(\theta)|\right)\right|$, that is tunable between zero and infinity by variation of the hopping $\theta$.

Abstract:We prove long time Anderson localization for the nonlinear random Schrödinger equation for arbitrary ℓ 2 initial data, hence giving an answer to a widely debated question in the physics community. The proof uses a Birkhoff normal form type transform to create a barrier where there is essentially no propagation. One of the new features is that this transform is in a small neighborhood enabling us to treat “rough” data, where there are no moment conditions. The formulation of the present result is inspired by the RAGE theorem.

Abstract:We investigate the Anderson localization in non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) models with imaginary potentials added to lattice sites to represent the physical gain and loss during the interacting processes between the system and environment. By checking the mean inverse participation ratio (MIPR) of the system, we find that different configurations of physical gain and loss have very different impacts on the localization phase transition in the system. In the case with balanced physical gain and loss added in an alternate way to the lattice sites, the critical region (in the case with p-wave superconducting pairing) and the critical value (both in the situations with and without p-wave pairing) for the Anderson localization phase transition will be significantly reduced, which implies an enhancement of the localization process. However, if the system is divided into two parts with one of them coupled to physical gain and the other coupled to the corresponding physical loss, the transition process will be impacted only in a very mild way. Besides, we also discuss the situations with imbalanced physical gain and loss and find that the existence of random imaginary potentials in the system will also affect the localization process while constant imaginary potentials will not.
