Abstract:Interactions between photons (nonlinearities) enable a powerful form of control over the state of light. This control has enabled technologies such as light sources at new wavelengths, ultra-short optical pulses, frequency-comb metrology systems, even quantum light sources. Common to a wide variety of nonlinear optical technologies is an equilibrium between an energy source, such as an external laser, and dissipation, such as radiation loss or absorption. In the vast majority of these systems, the coupling between the system and the outside world (which leads to loss) is well-described as ``Markovian,'' meaning that the outside world has no memory of its past state. In this work, we introduce a class of driven-dissipative systems in which a nonlinear cavity experiences non-Markovian coupling to the outside world. In the classical regime, we show that these non-Markovian cavities can have extremely low thresholds for nonlinear effects, as well as self-pulsing instabilities at THz rates, and rich phase diagrams with alternating regions of stability and instability. In the quantum regime, we show how these system, when implemented on state-of-the-art platforms, can enable generation of strongly squeezed cavity states with intensity fluctuations that can be more than 15 dB below the classical limit, in contrast to the Markovian driven-dissipative cavity, in which the limit is 3 dB. In the regime of few-photon nonlinearity, such non-Markovian cavities can enable a deterministic protocol to generate Fock states of high order, which are long-desired, but still elusive at optical frequencies. We expect that exploiting non-Markovian couplings in nonlinear optics should in the future lead to even richer possibilities than those discussed here for both classical and quantum light manipulations.

Abstract:We investigate and characterize the emergence of finite-component dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) in nonlinear photon resonators subject to $n$-photon driving and dissipation. Exploiting a semiclassical approach, we derive general results on the occurrence of second-order DPTs in this class of systems. We show that for all odd $n$, no second-order DPT can occur while, for even $n$, the competition between higher-order nonlinearities determines the nature of the criticality and allows for second-order DPTs to emerge only for $n=2$ and $n=4$. As pivotal examples, we study the full quantum dynamics of three- and four-photon driven-dissipative Kerr resonators, confirming the prediction of the semiclassical analysis on the nature of the transitions. The stability of the vacuum and the typical timescales needed to access the different phases are also discussed. We also show a first-order DPT where multiple solutions emerge around zero, low, and high-photon numbers. Our results highlight the crucial role played by strong and weak symmetries in triggering critical behaviors, providing a Liouvillian framework to study the effects of high-order nonlinear processes in driven-dissipative systems, that can be applied to problems in quantum sensing and information processing.

Interplay between external driving, dissipation and collective effects in the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes

Abstract:The evolution of quantum optical systems is determined by three key factors: the interactions with their surrounding environment, externally controlled lasers and between the different system components. Understanding the interplay between the three dynamical contributions is essential for the study of out-of-equilibrium phenomena as well as technological applications. The present study investigates open system phenomena in driven optical systems coupled simultaneously to a bosonic field. For a linear system of micro-cavities coupled to a photonic crystal, it is analytically shown that environmental interaction and external control cause significant non-Markovian corrections to the applied coherent drive. Additionally, collective cross-driving effects arise when multiple modes are coupled to the same field, where a laser applied to one mode effectively drives other modes. Based on the linear solution, a non-Markovian master equation for two-level emitters is derived. Remarkably, the proposed equation of motion remains accurate even for moderate driving intensities, where emitters cannot be approximated by bosonic modes. The influence of the non-linearity is analyzed and benchmarked against an exact pseudo-mode solution, and compared with established master equations in the Markovian regime. Within this regime, the comparison demonstrates the presence of short-time non-Markovian effects at times well beyond the inverse of the environment's bandwidth, and memory effects induced by short laser pulses. These findings offer valuable insights into the driven open system dynamics of quantum optical systems, impurities embedded in solid-state materials, molecular systems, and more, paving the way for precise control of their quantum states.

Abstract:This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems - relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates - where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture. Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes. Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground-state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly-interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly-correlated quantum regime. Our general approach opens a route for the engineering of unconventional optical nonlinearities in photonic devices and controllable drive-induced interactions in ultracold quantum matter.

Abstract:Integrated photonics has for several years included in its panoply the development of functions based on third-order non-linear optical phenomena, from the generation of supercontinuum or frequency comb sources to metrology or spectroscopy on chip applications. This natural evolution, after the development of high-speed transceivers in the last few years, particularly in silicon photonics, is based on a number of compromises and still has to solve problems, particularly concerning the integration of nonlinear materials on silicon and their exploitation. The work we present addresses two directions. The first is oriented towards the development of a supercontinuum source using Nitrogen-rich photonic circuits from an industrial CMOS platform, while the second aims at the development of hybrid highly nonlinear waveguides significantly reducing the impact of twophoton absorption in the telecom window around 1,55μm by exploiting silicon slot waveguides infiltrated by chalcogenide glasses (As2S3).
Nonlinear dynamics and chaos in dissipative optical trimers with complex couplings

Abstract:In the context of non-Hermitian photonics, we consider a nonlinear optical trimer with three lossy waveguides with complex couplings. This non-Hermitian trimer exhibits stable stationary and oscillatory regimes in a wide range of values of the coupling-loss parameters. Moreover, chaotic dynamics through period-doubling is confirmed via Lyapunov exponent measurements and the underlying bifurcation structure is found by semi-analytical continuation of solutions. The interplay of chaos, due to Kerr nonlinearity, and non-Hermiticity, due to the combined dissipation and complex coupling, provides a different perspective in the area of nonlinear and non-Hermitian optics.

Abstract:Rapidly growing demands for fast information processing have launched a race for creating compact and highly efficient optical devices that can reliably transmit signals without losses. Recently discovered topological phases of light provide a novel ground for photonic devices robust against scattering losses and disorder. Combining these topological photonic structures with nonlinear effects will unlock advanced functionalities such as nonreciprocity and active tunability. Here we introduce the emerging field of nonlinear topological photonics and highlight recent developments in bridging the physics of topological phases with nonlinear optics. This includes a design of novel photonic platforms which combine topological phases of light with appreciable nonlinear response, self-interaction effects leading to edge solitons in topological photonic lattices, nonlinear topological circuits, active photonic structures exhibiting lasing from topologically-protected modes, and harmonic generation from edge states in topological arrays and metasurfaces. We also chart future research directions discussing device applications such as mode stabilization in lasers, parametric amplifiers protected against feedback, and ultrafast optical switches employing topological waveguides.

Abstract:Optomechanical manipulation of nanoparticles enabling ultimate control over their 3D motion is nowadays one of the most highly demanded links between optics, biology, medicine, microfluidics, etc., paving the way for a plethora of emerging applications from drug delivery to living cells, to new methods of nanofabrication. In this Letter we provide novel type of optical manipulation driven by nonlinear effects and laying on the interface between classical optomechanics and non-linear optics. The formation, stability and the dynamics of optical dissipative solitary waves interacting with dielectric nanoparticles are studied theoretically. A mathematical model describing the optical field and the particles are proposed and the stationary solutions in the form of localized optical waves interacting with nanoparticles are found, their bifurctations are studied. It is shown that the linear stability of the solitary waves is affected by the particles but there are regions in the parameter space where the solitons remain stable. The dynamics of the solitary waves with trapped nanoparticles under the action of the inhomogeneous pump is also studied.

Abstract:Topological photonics is nowadays one of the most active areas in optics, yet thus far research efforts in this area are mainly focused on investigating linear topological photonic structures [1] , where dynamics are usually described through eigenmode expansions. The presence of nonlinearity typically couples the eigenmodes and gives rise to nonlinear phenomena ranging from solitons to extreme waves and chaos. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in nonlinear topological photonics, demonstrating that nonlinearity can induce topological phase transitions, coupling into topologically protected edge states, as well as nontrivial topological gap solitons and topological insulators [2] - [7] . However, how nonlinearity affects nontrivial topological systems and couples eigenmodes in nonlinear topological systems still remains a largely unexplored territory. Here, we report dynamical topological phase transitions entirely driven by nonlinearity, achieved in colliding soliton lattices. By forming two one-dimensional soliton sublattices and kicking them initially in opposite directions, soliton interaction forms a paradigm model of topological physics, namely, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice [8] - [10] . During nonlinear propagation, such a soliton SSH-like lattice repetitively evolves from a topological trivial to a nontrivial regime (featured by the Zak phase [8] ), exhibiting dynamical topological phase transitions.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities, such as thermo-optic mechanisms and free-carrier dispersion, are often considered unwelcome effects in silicon-based resonators and, more specifically, optomechanical cavities, since they affect, for instance, the relative detuning between an optical resonance and the excitation laser. Here, we exploit these nonlinearities and their intercoupling with the mechanical degrees of freedom of a silicon optomechanical nanobeam to unveil a rich set of fundamentally different complex dynamics. By smoothly changing the parameters of the excitation laser we demonstrate accurate control to activate two- and four-dimensional limit cycles, a period-doubling route and a six-dimensional chaos. In addition, by scanning the laser parameters in opposite senses we demonstrate bistability and hysteresis between two- and four-dimensional limit cycles, between different coherent mechanical states and between four-dimensional limit cycles and chaos. Our findings open new routes towards exploiting silicon-based optomechanical photonic crystals as a versatile building block to be used in neurocomputational networks and for chaos-based applications.

Abstract:The system-environment interaction is simulated by light propagating in coupled photonic waveguides. The profile of the electromagnetic field provides intuitive physical insight to study the Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems. The transition from non-Markovian to Markovian process is demonstrated by increasing the size of environment, as the energy evolution changes from oscillating to an exponential decay, and the revival period increases. Moreover, the dynamical decoupling with a sequence of phase modulations is introduced to such a photonic open system to form a band structure in time dimension, where the energy dissipation can be significantly accelerated or inhibited. It opens the possibility to tune the dissipation in photonic system, similar to the dynamic decoupling of spins.

Abstract:Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently driven nonlinear optical resonators. They have attracted significant attention over the past decade due to their rich nonlinear dynamics and key role in the generation of coherent microresonator optical frequency combs. Whilst the vast majority of implementations have relied on \emph{homogeneous} continuous wave driving, the soliton's "plasticity" combined with \emph{inhomogeneous} driving offers attractive advantages for a host of applications. Here we review recent studies into the dynamics and applications of Kerr cavity solitons in the presence of inhomogeneous driving fields. In particular, we summarise the salient theoretical developments that allow for the analysis of CS motion in the presence of pump phase or amplitude inhomogeneities, and survey recent experiments that use pulsed driving to realise energy efficient and flexible microresonator optical frequency combs.

Abstract:We address the interactions between optical solitons in the system with longitudinally varying nonlocality degree and nonlinearity strength. We consider a physical model describing light propagation in nematic liquid crystals featuring a strongly nonlocal nonlinear response. We reveal that the variation of the nonlocality and nonlinearity along the propagation direction can substantially enhance or weaken the interaction between out-of-phase solitons. This phenomenon manifests itself as a slowdown or acceleration of the soliton collision dynamics in one-dimensional geometries or of the soliton spiraling rate in bulk media. Therefore, one finds that by engineering the nonlocality and nonlinearity variation rate one can control the output soliton location.
Non-linear-enabled localization in driven-dissipative photonic lattices

Abstract:Recent experimental work has demonstrated the ability to achieve reconfigurable photon localization in lossy photonic lattices by continuously driving them with lasers strategically positioned at specific locations. This localization results from the perfect, destructive interference of light emitted from different positions and, because of that, occurs only at very specific frequencies. Here, we examine this localization regime in the presence of standard optical Kerr non-linearities, such as those found in polaritonic lattices, and show that they stabilize driven-dissipative localization across frequency ranges significantly broader than those observed in the linear regime. Moreover, we demonstrate that, contrary to intuition, in most siutations this driven-dissipative localization does not enhance non-linear effects like optical bistabilities, due to a concurrent reduction in overall intensities. Nevertheless, we are able to identify certain parameter regions where non-linear enhancement is achieved, corresponding to situations where emission from different spots constructively interferes.

Abstract:The short de Broglie wavelength and strong interaction empower free electrons to probe scattering and excitations in materials and resolve the structure of biomolecules. Recent advances in using nanophotonic structures to mediate bilinear electron-photon interaction have brought novel optical manipulation schemes to electron beams, enabling high space-time-energy resolution electron microscopy, quantum-coherent optical modulation, attosecond metrology and pulse generation, transverse electron wavefront shaping, dielectric laser acceleration, and electron-photon pair generation. However, photonic nanostructures also exhibit nonlinearities, which have to date not been exploited for electron-photon interactions. Here, we report the interaction of electrons with spontaneously generated Kerr nonlinear optical states inside a continuous-wave driven photonic chip-based microresonator. Optical parametric processes give rise to spatiotemporal pattern formation, or dissipative structures, corresponding to coherent or incoherent optical frequency combs. By coupling such microcombs in situ to electron beams, we demonstrate that different dissipative structures induce distinct fingerprints in the electron spectra and Ramsey-type interference patterns. In particular, using spontaneously formed femtosecond temporal solitons, we achieve ultrafast temporal gating of the electron beam without the necessity of a pulsed laser source or a pulsed electron source. Our work elucidates the interaction of free electrons with a variety of nonlinear dissipative states, demonstrates the ability to access solitons inside an electron microscope, and extends the use of microcombs to unexplored territories, with ramifications in novel ultrafast electron microscopy, light-matter interactions driven by on-chip temporal solitons, and ultra-high spatiotemporal resolution sampling of nonlinear optical dynamics and devices.

Abstract:Dissipative solitons are well known as representative nonlinear localized wave packets resulting from the composite balance of dispersion, nonlinearity, gain and loss in optical cavities. Since the last three decades, dissipative solitons keep as one of the most active research topics in the framework of nonlinear physics, not only for fundamental researches but also for various industrial applications. From one hand, due to the rich nonlinear dynamics, dissipative solitons have been considered as an ideal testbed to study the pumping-dissipation-bifurcation complexities. On the other hand, the emergences of dissipative solitons are tightly linked with the emission of ultrashort laser pulses, as well as the formation of broadband optical frequency combs. Compared with single-soliton counterpart, the multi-component dissipative solitons have exhibited even more fascinating properties and much wider range of applications, therefore the coupling dynamics of dissipative solitons is the blooming and emergent research area in the last decade. From this point of view, this review article covers the latest developments of compound dissipative solitons, not only in passive Kerr resonators, but also in mode-locked laser cavities. Ranging from polarized vector solitons to soliton molecules, the rising degree of freedom of these multi-component localized structures is boosting the discovery of novel nonlinear dynamics and underpin the various photonic applications in light science.
