Abstract:The presence of source-related noise, characterized by exceptionally large amplitudes, poses a significant challenge in seismic data processing, impeding the accurate recovery of the effective signal within overlapping regions. In response, we introduce an adaptive time-frequency denoising method tailored to mitigate this issue. First, the seismic data is horizontally sorted, and exponential function fittings are applied to exploit amplitude difference information embedded in the dataset. Then, the curvatures of the exponential functions are computed, and their maximal values are chosen to establish a dynamic threshold curve, offering an estimate for the range of abnormal traces from shallow to deep regions. Next, further refinement of the dynamic threshold curve involves iterative adjustments based on the standard deviation of the curvature functions, resulting in a more precise separation between signal and noise traces. Finally, leveraging the optimized dynamic threshold curve, adaptive threshold value computations are performed at each frequency slice and subsequently applied through soft thresholding to effectively reduce the impact of strong amplitude noise. Numerical examples involving synthetic and field data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in attenuating strong source-related noise, surpassing the performance of traditional f-k filter, nonconvex (NC) threshold, and static threshold methods.

Random Noise Attenuation Based on Support Vector Regression and Adaptive Wiener Filtering

Abstract:For suppressing the random noise of the seismic data, we propose a composite method compounded of the 1-D least squares support vector regression (LS-SVR) and the 2-D adaptive Wiener filtering. The former can efficiently suppress the strong noise and recover the desired seismic wavelets trace by trace from time domain, but it does not consider the space-domain information; the latter can make full use of the correlations of multi-trace data from time-space domain, but for the case of the strong noise it works less well. The combination of two methods has complementary advantages. By simulation experiments, we find that compared with the results obtained by using the 1-D LS-SVR and the 2-D adaptive Wiener filtering separately, the results obtained by using the combined method have much higher signal-to- noise ratio (SNR) and better waveform quality.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a data-dependent Fourier filter (DDFF) based on image segmentation for random seismic noise attenuation. In the proposed method, the original seismic data is divided into some overlapped small blocks. For each block, a local Fourier filter is designed automatically in two steps. At first, a binary mask is obtained by segmenting the Fourier amplitude spectra (FAS) of this block. The histogram of the FAS is used to get the threshold for the FAS segmentation. Secondly, an average filter is applied on the binary mask to get the tapered Fourier filter. In the proposed method, the DDFFs for all blocks are compact and time–space variant. After all blocks are processed, they are merged together to form the filtered result. We illustrate our method by a 2D synthetic seismic data, and give a comparison with the coherent event extraction method in Fourier domain. At last, a real 3D seismic data example demonstrates that the proposed method obtains some promising results.

Adaptive Convolutional Filter for Seismic Noise Attenuation

Abstract:Seismic exploration is currently the most mature approach for studying subsurface structures, yet the presence of noise greatly restricts its imaging accuracy. Previous methods still face significant challenges: traditional computational methods are often computationally complex and their effectiveness is hard to guarantee; deep learning approaches rely heavily on datasets, and the complexity of network training makes them difficult to apply in practical field scenarios. In this paper, we proposed a method that has only 2464 learnable parameters, and its parameter constraints rely on priors rather than requiring training data. The three priors we proposed can effectively attenuate random noise while significantly reducing signal leakage, ensuring that the separated noise remains as independent as possible from the processed data. We validated our method on National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska Survey, and the results indicate that our proposed approach effectively enhances noise elimination and seismic data resolution.

Abstract:The fractal conservation law (FCL) is a partial-differential-equation-based filtering approach. Analysis of the frequency response of the FCL indicates that it can eliminate high frequencies and preserve or amplify low/medium frequencies. Generally, the shape of the frequency response is fixed. Thus, the FCL cannot track the signal beyond the threshold, which corresponds to the cutoff frequency. Besides, the FCL recovers seismic events only along the time direction, thereby ignoring the coherence between neighboring traces. To resolve these shortcomings, this letter presents a novel spatiotemporal adaptive FCL method. We use a group of frequency responses of the FCL determined by different parameters to construct a convex hull of the filtering results. Then, we introduce an objective function based on the penalized least squares criterion with respect to FCL estimation on this convex hull and take the directional derivative as the penalty term. Thus, the correlations between the adjacent channels are taken into account in the algorithm. Therefore, the 2-D adaptive FCL is equivalent to a convex optimization problem with box constraints, which can be solved using the projected gradient descent algorithm. The application of gradient descent consists of taking the derivative of an objective function, which can be implemented quickly by means of the discrete cosine transform (DCT). The experimental results illustrate that our proposed algorithm has a higher output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than the 1-D adaptive FCL on some synthetic records and field seismic data.

Abstract:Many natural phenomena, including geologic events and geophysical data, are fundamentally nonstationary. They may exhibit stationarity on a short timescale but eventually alter their behavior in time and space. We developed a 2D [Formula: see text] adaptive prediction filter (APF) and further extended this to a 3D [Formula: see text] version for random noise attenuation based on regularized nonstationary autoregression (RNA). Instead of patching, a popular method for handling nonstationarity, we obtained smoothly nonstationary APF coefficients by solving a global regularized least-squares problem. We used shaping regularization to control the smoothness of the coefficients of APF. Three-dimensional space-noncausal [Formula: see text] APF uses neighboring traces around the target traces in the 3D seismic cube to predict noise-free signal, so it provided more accurate prediction results than the 2D version. In comparison with other denoising methods, such as frequency-space deconvolution, time-space prediction filter, and frequency-space RNA, we tested the feasibility of our method in reducing seismic random noise on three synthetic data sets. Results of applying the proposed method to seismic field data demonstrated that nonstationary [Formula: see text] APF was effective in practice.

Abstract:Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) becomes attractive recently for random noise attenuation because of its convenient implementation and ability in dealing with non-stationary seismic data. In this paper, we summarize the existing use of EMD in seismic data denoising and introduce a general hybrid scheme which combines f - x EMD with a dipping-events retrieving operator. The novel hybrid scheme can achieve a better denoising performance compared with the conventional f - x EMD and selected dipping event retriever. We demonstrate the strong horizontal-preservation capability of f - x EMD that makes the EMD based hybrid approach attractive. When f - x EMD is applied to a seismic profile, all the horizontal events will be preserved, while leaving few dipping events and random noise in the noise section, which can be dealt with easily by applying a dipping-events retrieving operator to a specific region for preserving the useful dipping signal. This type of incomplete hybrid approach is termed a selective hybrid approach. Two synthetic and one post-stack field data examples demonstrate a better performance of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The frequency-space (f-x) empirical mode decomposition (EMD) denoising method has two limitations when applied to nonstationary seismic data. First, subtracting the first intrinsic mode function (IMF) results in signal damage and limited denoising. Second, decomposing the real and imaginary parts of complex data may lead to inconsistent decomposition numbers. Thus, we propose a new method named f-x spatial projection-based complex empirical mode decomposition (CEMD) prediction filtering. The proposed approach directly decomposes complex seismic data into a series of complex IMFs (CIMFs) using the spatial projection-based CEMD algorithm and then applies f-x predictive filtering to the stationary CIMFs to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Synthetic and real data examples were used to demonstrate the performance of the new method in random noise attenuation and seismic signal preservation.

Abstract:Random noise attenuation always played an important role in seismic data processing. One of the most widely used methods for suppressing random noise was [Formula: see text] predictive filtering. When the subsurface structure becomes complex, this method suffered from higher prediction errors owing to the large number of different dip components that need to be predicted. We developed a novel denoising method termed [Formula: see text] empirical-mode decomposition (EMD) predictive filtering. This new scheme solved the problem that makes [Formula: see text] EMD ineffective with complex seismic data. Also, by making the prediction more precise, the new scheme removed the limitation of conventional [Formula: see text] predictive filtering when dealing with multidip seismic profiles. In this new method, we first applied EMD to each frequency slice in the [Formula: see text] domain and obtained several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Then, an autoregressive model was applied to the sum of the first few IMFs, which contained the high-dip-angle components, to predict the useful steeper events. Finally, the predicted events were added to the sum of the remaining IMFs. This process improved the prediction precision by using an EMD-based dip filter to reduce the dip components before [Formula: see text] predictive filtering. Synthetic and real data sets demonstrated the performance of our proposed method in preserving more useful energy.
Seismic data denoising based on mixed time-frequency methods

Abstract:Deconvolution denoising in the f-x domain has some defects when facing situations like complicated geology structure, coherent noise of steep dip angles, and uneven spatial sampling. To solve these problems, a new filtering method is proposed, which uses the generalized S transform which has good time-frequency concentration criterion to transform seismic data from the time-space to time-frequency-space domain (t-f-x). Then in the t-f-x domain apply Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) on each frequency slice and clear the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) that noise dominates to suppress coherent and random noise. The model study shows that the high frequency component in the first IMF represents mainly noise, so clearing the first IMF can suppress noise. The EMD filtering method in the t-f-x domain after generalized S transform is equivalent to self-adaptive f-k filtering that depends on position, frequency, and truncation characteristics of high wave numbers. This filtering method takes local data time-frequency characteristic into consideration and is easy to perform. Compared with AR predictive filtering, the component that this method filters is highly localized and contains relatively fewer low wave numbers and the filter result does not show over-smoothing effects. Real data processing proves that the EMD filtering method in the t-f-x domain after generalized S transform can effectively suppress random and coherent noise of steep dips.

Abstract:In the geophysical field, seismic noise attenuation has been considered as a critical and long-standing problem, especially for the pre-stack data processing. Here, we propose a model to leverage the deep-learning model for this task. Rather than directly applying an existing de-noising model from ordinary images to the seismic data, we have designed a particular deep-learning model, based on residual neural networks. It is named as N2N-Seismic, which has a strong ability to recover the seismic signals back to intact condition with the preservation of primary signals. The proposed model, achieving with great success in attenuating noise, has been tested on two different seismic datasets. Several metrics show that our method outperforms conventional approaches in terms of Signal-to-Noise-Ratio, Mean-Squared-Error, Phase Spectrum, etc. Moreover, robust tests in terms of effectively removing random noise from any dataset with strong and weak noises have been extensively scrutinized in making sure that the proposed model is able to maintain a good level of adaptation while dealing with large variations of noise characteristics and intensities.

Abstract:Predictive filtering (PF) in the frequency domain is one of the most widely used denoising algorithms in seismic data processing. PF is based on the assumption of linear or planar events in the time-space domain. In traditional PF methods, a predictive filter is fixed across the spatial dimension, which cannot deal with spatial variations in seismic data well. To handle the curved events, the predictive filter is either applied in local windows or extended into a nonstationary version. The regularized nonstationary autoregression (RNAR) method can be treated as a nonstationary extension of traditional PF, in which the predictive filter coefficients are variable in different spatial locations. This highly underdetermined inverse problem is solved by shaping regularization with a smoothness constraint in space. We further extend the RNAR method to the more general case, in which we can apply more constraints to the filter coefficients according to the features of seismic data. First, apart from the smoothness in space, we also apply a smoothing constraint in frequency, considering the coherency of the coefficients in the frequency dimension. Second, we apply a frequency-dependent smoothing radius in the spatial dimension to better take advantage of the nonstationarity of seismic data in the frequency axis and to better deal with noise. The effectiveness of our method is validated using several synthetic and field data examples.

Abstract:As seismic exploration focuses on deep and ultra-deep hydrocarbon targets, seismic data are characterized by weak reflection signals and extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Although weak reflections help delineate deep geological structures, the low SNR presents challenges for traditional denoising methods. We propose a high-dimensional adaptive progressive seismic denoising method to enhance the SNR of deep weak reflection signals. Instead of using a global noise variance, we estimate local noise variances using a 3D Laplacian mask based on the local characteristics of seismic data at different locations for non-stationary seismic signals. It employs local noise variance to calculate a Gaussian bilateral kernel function to estimate high-amplitude noise in the time domain and low-amplitude noise in the frequency domain. We further extend this algorithm to three dimensions by adjusting the parameters of the 3D kernel function during the iterative process. Numerical examples of synthetic and field data demonstrate the feasibility and adaptability of the proposed method. Its comparison with the dictionary learning method and optimal damped rank reduction methods shows that the proposed method can significantly improve the SNR of deep reflection signals and is a good tool for processing deep and ultra-deep seismic data.
Microseismic and seismic denoising via ensemble empirical mode decomposition and adaptive thresholding

Abstract:Random and coherent noise exists in microseismic and seismic data, and suppressing noise is a crucial step in seismic processing. We have developed a novel seismic denoising method, based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) combined with adaptive thresholding. A signal was decomposed into individual components called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Each decomposed signal was then compared with those IMFs resulting from a white-noise realization to determine if the original signal contained structural features or white noise only. A thresholding scheme then removed all nonstructured portions. Our scheme is very flexible, and it is applicable in a variety of domains or in a diverse set of data. For instance, it can serve as an alternative for random noise removal by band-pass filtering in the time domain or spatial prediction filtering in the frequency-offset domain to enhance the lateral coherence of seismic sections. We have determined its potential for microseismic and reflection seismic denoising by comparing its performance on synthetic and field data using a variety of methods including band-pass filtering, basis pursuit denoising, frequency-offset deconvolution, and frequency-offset empirical mode decomposition.

Abstract:Conventional time-space domain and frequency-space domain prediction filtering methods assume that seismic data consists of two parts, signal and random noise. That is, the so-called additive noise model. However, when estimating random noise, it is assumed that random noise can be predicted from the seismic data by convolving with a prediction error filter. That is, the source-noise model. Model inconsistencies, before and after denoising, compromise the noise attenuation and signal-preservation performances of prediction filtering methods. Therefore, this study presents an inversion-based time-space domain random noise attenuation method to overcome the model inconsistencies. In this method, a prediction error filter (PEF), is first estimated from seismic data; the filter characterizes the predictability of the seismic data and adaptively describes the seismic data’s space structure. After calculating PEF, it can be applied as a regularized constraint in the inversion process for seismic signal from noisy data. Unlike conventional random noise attenuation methods, the proposed method solves a seismic data inversion problem using regularization constraint; this overcomes the model inconsistency of the prediction filtering method. The proposed method was tested on both synthetic and real seismic data, and results from the prediction filtering method and the proposed method are compared. The testing demonstrated that the proposed method suppresses noise effectively and provides better signal-preservation performance.

Abstract:At present, the seismic exploration of mineral resources such as unknown oil fields and natural gas fields has become the focus and difficulty. The Tarim Oilfield located in the desert area of northwest China has many uncertainties due to complicated geological structure and resource burial conditions. And the seismic record collected carries various noises, especially random noise with complex features, including non-stationary, non-Gaussian, nonlinear and low frequency. The seismic events are contaminated by random noise. Also the effective signal of desert seismic record is in the same frequency band as the random noise. These situations have brought great difficulties in denoising by conventional methods. In this paper, a noise reduction framework based on linear discriminant analysis effective signal detection in desert seismic record is proposed to solve this problem. At first, the method utilizes the difference between the effective signals and the noise in the low-dimensional space. The seismic data are divided into the effective signal cluster and the noise cluster. Then, the effective signal is extracted to realize the position of the seismic events. Finally, the conventional filter is matched to obtain better denoising results. The framework is applied to synthetic desert seismic records and real desert seismic records. The experimental results show that denoising capability after detecting effective signals is obviously better than those of conventional denoising methods. The accuracy of the seismic effective signal detection is higher, and the seismic events’ continuity is maintained better.

Adaptive filtering of microseismic data for monitoring a water-conducting fractured zone in a mine

Abstract:Water-conducting fractured zones in a rock mass can cause problems in mining. Attempts have been made to monitor their development using microseismic signals. However, due to the lack of prior information, it is difficult to filter out mixed low-frequency interference with traditional denoising methods. In this work, the proposed adaptive filtering algorithm is applied after the wavelet packets are decomposed. It is based on a cross-correlation analysis. The algorithm takes a high-quality signal in the common source waveform as prior information and applies the corresponding correlation coefficients between subbands as a threshold. The algorithm was verified with simulations. The results show that low-frequency interference can be effectively suppressed by filtering. For single-frequency interference, the signal-to-noise ratio increased from - 10.18 to 13.97, and the root-mean-square error was 43.88. For multi-frequency interference, it increased from - 10.01 and - 2.63 to 13.50 and 7.99. The root-mean-square errors were 46.31 and 138.07. The narrower the main frequency band of the interference signal and the less the overlap of the main frequency band of the interference signal and the effective signal, the better the filtering effect. When the algorithm was applied to microseismic data collected in the field, the number of effective channels increased and the accuracy improved. The development of a water-conducting fractured zone in the field was consistent with the microseismic location obtained after interference was removed by the algorithm, which indicates that it is feasible to monitor a water-conducting fractured zone by analyzing microseismic waveforms with the adaptive filtering algorithm.
