Abstract:Here, we present a novel approach for producing Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) in liquid by a non-thermal argon microplasma. The Fe3O4 NPs can be generated in minutes without any surfactant with an average size of 12.5 +/- 2.4nm. They show good aqueous-phase stability and excellent superparamagnetic properties with a saturation magnetization of 60.1emug(-1) and a small coercivity (<10Oe). In vitro magnetic resonance imaging study shows efficient imaging contrast characteristics of these NPs. These Fe3O4 NPs can be further decorated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) by adding 5% PEG into the electrolyte, which resulting in an average diameter of 19.2 +/- 2.7nm. This facile, fast, environmental-friendly and economical preparation strategy of magnetite NPs may be extended to the preparation of other metal oxide compound.

Abstract:Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles with mean diameter of about 7 and 13nm were prepared by partial reduction coprecipitation method and modified Massart method, respectively. Then the maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoprticles were obtained by aeration oxidizing of acidified magnetite nanoparticles aqueous suspension. The transition from magnetite to maghemite nanoparticles was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) photography. And the stable maghemite nanoparticles may be used in magnetic ferrofluids hyperthermia (MFH) application because of their satisfactory heating property in ac magnetic field.

Abstract:Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) homogeneously dispersed in silica matrix were obtained via a three-step chemical procedure at mild conditions. The acid-treated solids were obtained using silica NPs, Fe(NO3)3·9H2O and acetic acid. The nanocomposites with various contents of maghemite were prepared by heating the acid-treated solids at 80°C for 2h and then at 400°C for 1h. The acid-treated solids were studied by means of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetry (TG). The morphology and particle size of the magnetic nanocrystallites were evaluated by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique, while the nature of the obtained nanocomposites was studied using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), showing that the acid treatment played a critical role for the magnetic-phase formation and the maximum saturation magnetization (Ms) of the obtained nanocomposite was 37.78emug−1. However, when FeCl3·6H2O was used as precursor instead of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, pure hematite (α-Fe2O3) particles dispersed in silica matrix were obtained. Magnetic fluid (MF) was prepared using the maghemite/silica nanocomposites by high-energy ball milling and was characterized by UV–vis, Gouy magnetic balance and rotating rheometer.

Abstract:In a simple experimental condition without dustproof equipment, satisfactory spherical magnetite particles of narrow size distribution had been obtained by aging ferrous hydroxid gels in the presence of nitrate ion, this note reports a new result according to the modified experimental procedure, in which included the mixed of reactants, elimination of oxygen and magnetic seperation etc. According to transmission electron micrographs the mean diameter of particles is about 0.5 mu m.

Abstract:Background: Conventional methods of preparing magnetoliposomes are complicated and inefficient. A novel approach for magnetoliposomes preparation was investigated in the study reported here.Methods: FeCl3/FeCl2 solutions were hydrated with lipid films to obtain liposome-encapsulated iron ions by ultrasonic dispersion. Non-encapsulated iron ions were removed by dialysis. NH3 center dot H2O was added to the system to adjust the pH to a critical value. Four different systems were prepared. Each was incubated at a different temperature for a different length of time to facilitate the permeation of NH3 center dot H2O into the inner phase of the liposomes and the in situ formation of magnetic iron-oxide cores in the liposomes. Single-factor analysis and orthogonal-design experiments were applied to determinate the effects of alkalization pH, temperature, duration, and initial Fe concentration on encapsulation efficiency and drug loading.Results: The magnetoliposomes prepared by in situ precipitation had an average particle size of 168+/-14 nm, zeta potential of -26.2+/-1.9 mV and polydispersity index of 0.23+/-0.06. The iron-oxide cores were confirmed as Fe3O4 by X-ray diffraction and demonstrated a superparamagnetic response. Encapsulation efficiency ranged from 3% to 22%, while drug loading ranged from 0.2 to 1.58 mol Fe/mol lipid. The optimal conditions for in situ precipitation were found to be an alkalization pH of 12, temperature of 60 degrees C, time of 60 minutes, and initial Fe concentration of 100 mM Fe3+ + 50 mM Fe2+.Conclusion: In situ precipitation could be a simple and efficient approach for the preparation of iron-oxide magnetoliposomes.

Abstract:Achieving colloidal and chemical stability in ferrofluids by surface modification requires multiple steps, including purification, ex situ modification steps, and operation at high temperatures. In this study, a single-step microwave-assisted methodology is developed for iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) synthesis utilizing a series of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with chloride, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and pyrrolide anions as the reaction media, thus eliminating the use of volatile organics while enabling rapid synthesis at 80 degrees C as well as in situ surface functionalization. The characterized surface functionality, hydrodynamic particle size, magnetization, and colloidal stability of the IONPs demonstrate a strong dependence on the IL structure, ion coordination strength, reactivity, and hydrophilicity. The IONPs present primarily a magnetite (Fe3O4) phase with superparamagnetism with the highest saturation magnetization at 81 and 73 emu/g at 10 and 300 K, respectively. Depending on the IL coating, magnetization and exchange anisotropy decrease by 20 and 2-3 emu/g (at 35 wt % IL), respectively, but still represent the highest magnetization achieved for coated IONPs by a coprecipitation method. Further, the surface-functionalized superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles show good dispersibility and colloidal stability in water and dimethyl sulfoxide at 0.1 mg/mL concentration over the examined 3 month period. This study reports on the intermolecular and chemical interactions between the particle surface and the ILs under synthetic conditions as they relate to the magnetic and thermal properties of the resulting IONPs that are well suited for a variety of applications, including separation and catalysis.

Abstract:It is well known that magnetic nanofluids are widely applied in various fields ranging from heat transfer to miniature cooling, and from damping to sealing, due to the mobility and magnetism under magnetic field. Herein, the PFPE-oil based magnetic nanofluids with superior magnetization and dispersion stability were obtained via regulating reaction temperature. The structures of particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The size effects of particles on the magnetism and coating effect of particles, and on the stability and saturation magnetization of the fluids were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and density instrument, respectively. The results indicate that the impurity phase FeOOH only appear in the sample prepared at 18°C and the average size of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles reduces from 120 to 20 nm with raising reaction temperature. The saturation magnetization of Fe 3 O 4 particles increases firstly and then reduces with increasing particle size, which is affected by the thickness of magnetic dead layer and impurity phase FeOOH. The Fe 3 O 4 particles could be chemically coated by PFPE-acids, and the coated mass is a little affected by particle size. The stability of the nanofluids lowers while the saturation magnetization increases firstly and then decrease with increasing particle size. At reaction temperature of 60°C, Fe 3 O 4 particles of 25 nm and the nanofluids with superior stability and saturation magnetization were obtained. Our results indicate that the control of nanoparticles size by regulating reaction temperature can be a useful strategy for preparing magnetic nanofluids with desirable properties for various potential applications.

Abstract:A magnetic fluid comprises magnetic particles, a surfactant, and a base fluid. Magnetic particles (Fe304) are approximately 10 nm in size, and being repulsive, do not precipitate and are evenly dispersed in the base fluid by the surfactant. When a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic particles powder is arranged along the magnetic lines of force, and again disperses uniformly when the magnetic field is removed, thus exhibiting the property of superparamagnetism. In other words, when ferromagnetic powder becomes nano-sized, it gains the property of superparamagnetism by the size effect. Therefore, magnetic fluid is applied to various fields such as speakers, dampers, and vacuum seals.

Abstract:Monodispersity and size uniformity are critical issues for nanoparticles, especially for the inorganic particles dispersed in organic carriers serving as the precursor of composites. Herein, for the first time, we have developed a method based on flow-induced droplet coalescence for in situ dispersion of surface-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles to prepare Fe3O4/polystyrene (Fe3O4/PS) composite particles. A plate-type microchannel was constructed to initiate droplet coalescence for reducing the water-oil interfacial area and for dispersing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the precursor suspensions. Under optimized conditions, the precursor suspensions could be composed of monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 12 nm. In this case, the saturation magnetization of the prepared superparamagnetic composites was as high as 4.012 emu g(-1) at a magnetite content of 5 wt%. The method is simple and has great potential to be tailored for the preparation of non-aqueous suspensions with uniform and monodispersed nanoparticles.

Preparation of Monodispersed Hybrid Nanospheres with High Magnetite Content from Uniform Fe3O4 Clusters

Abstract:Hybrid nanospheres with controllable magnetite content and narrow size distribution, composed of Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in a crosslinked polystyrene matrix, were synthesized by magneto-template (Fe3O4 minidroplets) miniemulsion polymerization. In this process, a magnetic fluid (ferrofluid), consisting of Fe3O4 nanoparticles dispersed in octane, was directly emulsified in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate under ultrasonication. The formation of Fe3O4 minidroplets served as a template (magneto-template) for the subsequent miniemulsion polymerization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed uniform hybrid nanospheres in which the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were evenly dispersed. The average size of these magnetic hybrid nanospheres can be rationally adjusted from 70nm to 130nm by varying the amount of surfactant. The magnetite content can be controlled over a wide range, from 40wt % to 70wt %, by modulating the dosage of the ferrofluid. Real-time monitoring of the size of the Fe3O4 minidroplets after addition of monomers indicated gradual incorporation of monomers into the magneto-template prior to polymerization. The use of divinyl benzene with styrene to crosslink the polymer matrix was used for enhancing the integrity of the hybrid nanospheres. These magnetic hybrid nanospheres are superparamagnetic, and thus are ideal candidates for biomedical applications after suitable surface modification.

Abstract:Ultrafine magnetite particles were prepared through a hydrothermal process at 130°–150°C from a solution of iron chloride and iron powder in the presence of urea. XRD and chemical analysis indicated that the product was magnetite. The size and morphology of the particles were studied by TEM. The magnetite particles had a coercive force of 175 Oe and a saturation magnetization of 82.2 e.m.u./g. The reactive mechanism in the hydrothermal process was proposed.

Abstract:A previously proposed method was examined for producing monodisperse, submicrometer-sized magnetic polymer particles. The method applies soap-free emulsion polymerization during which Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles are heterocoagulated onto precipitated polymer nuclei. To chemically fix the magnetic particles to the polymer nuclei, vinyl groups were introduced on the Fe3O4 particles in a preliminary surface modification reaction with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and methacryloxypropyldimethoxysilane (MPDMS) was added to reaction systems of the soap-free emulsion polymerization. The colloidal dispersion stability of magnetic polymer particles was improved by the addition of an ionic monomer, sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS), during the polymerization. The polymerizations were carried out with styrene monomer and potassium persulfate initiator in ranges of NaSS concentrations (0–2.4×10−3M), NaSS addition times (60–80 min), and monomer concentrations (0.3–0.6 M) at fixed concentrations of 1.6×10−2M initiator and 1.3×10−2M MPDMS for pH 4.5 adjusted with a buffer system of [CH3COOH]/[NaOH]. The addition of NaSS during the polymerization could maintain the dispersion stability of magnetic polymer particles during the polymerization. Selection of the reaction conditions enabled the preparation of colloidally stable, submicrometer-sized magnetic polymer particles that had coefficients of variation of distribution smaller than the standard criterion for monodispersity, 10%.

Abstract:The present work reports the synthesis of a stable aqueous magnetic fluid (AMF) by dispersing double-surfactant-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in water using a facile ambient scalable wet chemical route. MNPs do not disperse well in water, resulting in low stability. This was improved by dispersing double-surfactant (oleic acid and sodium oleate)-coated MNPs in water, where cross-linking between the surfactants improves the stability of the AMFs. The stability was probed by rheological measurements and all the AMF samples showed a good long-term stability and stability against a gradient magnetic field. Further, the microwave spin resonance behavior of AMFs was studied in detail by corroborating the experimental results obtained from the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique to theoretical predictions by appropriate fittings. A broad spectrum was perceived for AMFs which indicates strong ferromagnetic characteristics. The resonance field shifted to higher magnetic field values with the decrease in particle size as larger-size MNPs magnetize and demagnetize more easily since their magnetic spins can align in the field direction more definitely. The FMR spectra was fitted to obtain various spin resonance parameters. The asymmetric shapes of the FMR spectra were observed with a decrease in particle sizes, which indicates an increase in relaxation time. The relaxation time increased with a decrease in particle sizes (sample A to D) from 37.2779 ps to 42.8301 ps. Further, a detailed investigation of the structural, morphological, and dc magnetic properties of the AMF samples was performed. Room temperature dc magnetic measurements confirmed the superparamagnetic (SPM) characteristics of the AMF and the M-H plot for each sample was fitted with a Langevin function to obtain the domain magnetization, permeability, and hydrodynamic diameter of the MNPs. The saturation magnetization and coercivity of the AMF samples increased with the increase in dispersed MNPs’ size of the samples. The improvement in the stability and magnetic characteristics makes AMFs suitable candidates for various biomedical applications such as drug delivery, magnetic fluid hyperthermia, and biomedicines.

Abstract:The synthesis of magnetic particles triggers the interest of many scientists due to their relevant properties and wide range of applications in the catalysis, nanomedicine, biosensing and magnetic separation fields. A fast synthesis of iron oxide magnetic particles using an eco-friendly and facile microwave-assisted solvothermal method is presented in this study. Submicron Fe3O4 spheres were prepared using FeCl3 as an iron source, ethylene glycol as a solvent and reductor and sodium acetate as a precipitating and nucleating agent. The influence of the presence of polyethylene glycol as an additional reductor and heat absorbent was also evaluated. We reduce the synthesis time to 1 min by increasing the reaction temperature using the microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis method under pressure or by adding PEG at lower temperatures. The obtained magnetite spheres are 200-300 nm in size and are composed of 10-30 nm sized crystallites. The synthesized particles were investigated using the XRD, TGA, pulsed-field magnetometry, Raman and FTIR methods. It was determined that adding PEG results in spheres with mixed magnetite and maghemite compositions, and the synthesis time increases the size of the crystallites. The presented results provide insights into the microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis method and ensure a fast route to obtaining spherical magnetic particles composed of different sized nanocrystallites.

Abstract:A new type of magnetic fluid was prepared by dispersing monodispersed iron–silica (Fe–SiO2) composite particles in polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400. The composite particles Fe–SiO2 were synthesized by hydrogen reduction from α-Fe2O3–SiO2 spheres. Their microstructures were observed by a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and the magnetism was characterized with a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Both steady-state and dynamic rheological properties of the magnetic fluid under different magnetic fields were studied by using a rheometer. Experimental results show that this magnetic fluid has a relatively high magnetoviscous effect at low shear rates. The yield stress of this material shows an increasing trend with a magnetic flux density. Also, viscoealstic properties of such materials are different from conventional ones.

Abstract:A method for preparing nano ferroferric oxide spheres with adjustable particle size with micro wave belongs to the nano material preparation technical field. The method comprises the following steps: the first step, adding inorganic salt and a surface active agent after malysite dissolves in polylol, adding a latent solvent; mixing and stirring to obtain a precursor liquid of ferroferric oxide, wherein, the mass ratio of the polylol and the malysite is (5-100):1, the mass ratio of the inorganic salt and the malysite is (1-6): 1, the mass ratio of the surface active agent and the malysite is (0-5):1, and the volume ratio of the latent solvent and the polymol is (0-1):1; the second step, placing the precursor liquid of the ferroferric oxide in a glass tube used by microwave; conducting microwave heating reaction in a microwave reactor; and obtaining magnetic ferroferric oxide particles after the reaction. The method is simple and quick; the prepared magnetic ferroferric oxide particles have the advantages of strong magnetism, adjustable size and good dispersibility, as well as dispersion in water or organic solvent, and suitability for application in the biomedicine field or the mechanical electronic field.

Abstract:Superparamagnetic nanocomposite particles composed of maghemite nanocrystal (ca.15 nm) and deposited Pt nanoclusters (ca. 2.5 nm) were synthesized by a low temperature catalytic method. The magnetic properties of iron oxides species can be easily tuned with different redox atmosphere in the presence of Pt nanoclusters. In this convenient preparation, Pt nanoclusters were first captured on Fe(OH)(3) nanoparticles by electrostatic interaction. Then at 80 'C the Fe(OH)(3) nanoparticles was catalytically reduced with glycol acid to Fe2O3 nanophase which were finally catalytically oxidized to maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) nanophase in the air at 80 degrees C. The as-synthesized Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/gamma-Fe2O3 nanocomposites were well characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetization measurements. Reversible and efficient transformation between the Pt/Fe2O3 and Pt/gamma-Fe2O3 nanocomposites was realized at 80 degrees C. The Pt/gamma-Fe2O3 nanocomposite particles modified with oleic acid were easily dispersed in nonpolar solvents such as hexane, resulting in stable ferrofluids.
